Dana White: ‘I hope Im alive’ to see MMA in the Olympics Posted: 19 Aug 2008 12:17 AM CDT Props: Fanhouse.com Quoteworthy:
UFC President provides a realistic (and unfortunate) assessment of the possibility of mixed martial arts becoming an Olympic event one day soon during the UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” press conference today in Chicago. We can dream, can’t we? That’s apparently all we can do … for now. |
Dana White: ‘Mindfreak’ to feature UFC President August 27 on A&E Posted: 18 Aug 2008 11:09 PM CDT Do you wanna be a F’ing magician? UFC President Dana White will appear on an episode of Criss Angel’s Mindfreak, Wednesday, August 27 at 10 p.m. ET on the A&E network. While the details of his role are still under wraps, UFC fans are sure to be intrigued by White’s cameo. Criss Angel is sort of an anti-Copperfield — an entertainer who takes magic far beyond pulling rabbits out of hats and regurgitating colorful scarves. Angel looks to blur the line between reality and illusion while maintaining a darker, edgier feel. Here’s a quick summary of the show from A&E:
Angel is probably best known for “mentalism,” which I always thought was the reason Dana was unable to sign Fedor Emelianenko back in 2007. Now I know it actually refers to the use of psionics as it relates to magicians. Fans of the show may also be surprised to learn that Dana’s interest in magic comes from his prior experience in the mystical arts. How many times over the past year have we seen his ability to make a fighter’s contract disappear before our very eyes? For now we can only speculate as to what level of participation White will have. Perhaps Angel will attempt a new illusion for UFC fans? Hopefully he doesn’t repeat the one from 2006 where he walks on water. Dana’s been doing that for years. |

UFC Quick Quote: James Irvin ‘made a dangerous decision’ to take painkillers Posted: 18 Aug 2008 10:29 PM CDT
– James Irvin makes his first public remarks via Sherdog.com since testing positive for Methadone and Oxymorphone, following his first round technical knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19. “The Sandman” — who was nursing a broken foot just weeks before accepting the bout — claims that he used the banned substances to mask the pain associated with the injury. He will likely be suspended and fined for the “decision” at an upcoming disciplinary hearing before the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). |

Brad Morris vs Jason Brilz UFC Fight Night 15 bout possible Posted: 18 Aug 2008 03:56 PM CDT Brad Morris (9-3) and Octagon newcomer Jason Brilz (15-1-1) will collide in a light heavyweight clash at UFC Fight Night 15 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Neb., on September 17, according to MMAonTap.com. It's a 205-pound fight that is slated for the preliminary card, which makes it unlikely that it will air during the Spike TV broadcast that begins at 8 p.m. ET. Regardless, this will mark the first fight in the division for Morris after getting creamed by Cain Velasquez in a heavyweight bout at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2" in April. Prior to the loss, the Australian prospect strung together four consecutive winning performances. Brilz, on the other hand, boasts a near perfect professional record and has won 11 straight contests. The Nebraska-based fighter –- who is a decorated amateur wrestler -– has notable wins over veterans such as Jason MacDonald, Alex Schoenauer and others. Two lightweight match ups -– Nate Diaz vs. Josh Neer and Clay Guida vs. Mac Danzig –- highlight the Spike TV special presentation, which serves as the lead-in to The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 season premier at 10 p.m. ET. It's shaping up to be a great night of action. To check out the latest UFC Fight Night 15 card and rumors click here. |
Strikeforce: HDNet to air ‘Payback’ October 3 Posted: 18 Aug 2008 12:29 PM CDT
The San Jose-based organization struck a deal with Mark Cuban’s HDNet earlier this year to air four separate events during 2008. This will be the third show to air on the high definition cable network. The other two were the June 27 event headlined by the lightweight title bout between Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez and Josh “The Punk” Thomson and the February card in Tacoma, Wash., which featured Bob Sapp’s first fight in the United States. This October 3 event for Strikeforce will be its second in a two week span. On September 20 the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills will host “Strikeforce at the Mansion II.” Lightweight champ Josh Thomson is expected to defend his strap in the main event and light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth will also put his gold on the line against Renato “Babalu” Sobral. “Payback” has a main event rematch between Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Sam Morgan at 185 pounds. The two previously fought back in 2005 with Morgan winning by first round knockout. Ludwig is coming off a first round technical knockout loss to Takanori Gomi in March, while Sam Morgan is coming off a first round loss himself, which came at the hands of Fabricio Camoes this past Saturday during a Sho XC event. Also confirmed for the card is a middleweight match up pitting Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg against Falaniko “Niko” Vitale. Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni and Pete Spratt are also expected to be in action against yet to be determined opponents. |
