Joe Riggs vs Kazuo Misaki Strikeforce fight official for Playboy Mansion Posted: 11 Aug 2008 08:29 AM CDT Middleweights Joe Riggs (28-10) and Kazuo Misaki (20-8-2) will collide in a middleweight tilt when Strikeforce returns to the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif., on September 20. Misaki -– the Pride FC 2006 Welterweight Middleweight Grand Prix winner -– is on a two fight win streak and has been victorious in five of his last seven appearances. The "Grabaka Hitman" has taken on the world's best at 185 pounds throughout his career, including Dan Henderson, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Denis Kang, Paulo Filho, Frank Trigg, Nathan Marquardt, Ricardo Almeida and others. He is a tremendous talent and was a big-time acquisition for San Jose-based mixed martial arts promotion. And Misaki is eager to show his new employer that the company made a wise choice. Here's a snip from a recent press release:
Riggs –- who has been plagued by injuries and other issues outside the cage throughout his career –- will compete in the middleweight division one final time before settling once and for all in the welterweight division. The talented 25-year-old Arizona native has had an up-and-down career and there's no doubt that a win over Misaki would be a huge lift. "Diesel" most recently defeated Matt Dempsey via submission (rear naked choke) Rage in the Cage (RITC) 112 back in July, marking a successful return from his most recent back injury that cost him a possible win against Corey Devella at Strikeforce: "Strikeforce At The Dome" earlier this year. Here's a snip from Riggs:
According to the press release, the showdown between Misaki and Riggs is the first confirmed "Strikeforce At The Mansion II" match up. The lineup will eventually comprise 10 bouts and feature lightweight champion Josh Thomson in the main event of the evening. Stay tuned for more fight card updates. |
Brock Lesnar: ‘Can you see me now?’ Posted: 10 Aug 2008 11:58 PM CDT Brock Lesnar is a God … in Minnestota. It’s impossible to explain the unbelievable (and deafening) reception that Lesnar received last night from the hometown crowd that packed the Target Center to watch him take on Heath Herring at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy.” We were seated in section 100 and could not hear anything besides the roar of the crowd, which totally drowned out the voice of Bruce Buffer during the pre-fight introductions. In fact, my ears were ringing well after the lights came down to signal the end of the show. To his credit Lesnar did an amazing job of whipping the crowd into a frenzy, hoisting his massive limbs in the air if he wanted to raise the volume inside the venue, throwing gloves and shirts into the stands and hijacking the microphone to deliver a dramatic speech. Last night demonstrated the reason UFC President Dana White opened his checkbook to an unproven — albeit promising — former WWE star and NFL dropout. Lesnar has a rare mix of magnetic starpower/appeal and raw potential that is very likely unrivaled in the sport. In short, what he lacks in mixed martial arts experience he more than makes up for with his charisma. He had the Target Center and everyone inside it eating from the palms of his 4XL mitts. Lesnar went a bit far with the antics at the end of the fight, pretending to ride Herring like he was about to lasso a bull, which of course was in response to Herring’s prefight remarks that it wasn’t his “first rodeo.” Regardless, Lesnar is an absolute lightning rod who will no doubt continue to be a huge draw, whether it’s because he’s evolving into a heel or just because people can’t look the other way. We can see you, Brock. And if last night is any indication we will be seeing a lot more of you sooner rather than later. |

Miguel Torres ‘itching’ for next WEC fight in December Posted: 10 Aug 2008 09:41 PM CDT Props: MMADHOUSE.com Quoteworthy:
WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres talks about his eagerness to return to action in a recent interview against possibly Manny Tapia or Brian Bowles. Torres appears to indicate that Tapia has the inside track to challenge for his 135-pound belt next if he’s fit. Otherwise, we could see Bowles — who recently stopped Damacio Page — get the nod. Either way it should be a tough fight for either fighter — Torres sounds fired up. |
K-1 World Grand Prix 2008 quick results Posted: 10 Aug 2008 04:05 PM CDT
Turkish kickboxer Gokhan Saki, a last minute replacement with only four K-1 matches under his belt, shocked the fighting world by winning it all after defeating three straight challengers - all by knockout. It was a dominating performance by the 24 year-old phenom who no doubt will be getting a lot of attention in the coming weeks. Also on the card were American meatballs Eric “Butterbean” Esch and Wesley “Cabbage” Correira. The two behemoths faced off in the quarterfinals where the surprisingly nimble Cabbage sent Butterbean back to the pantry with a bone-crunching head kick. Cabbage was later eliminated by Randy Kim, a replacement for tournament favorite Siala-Mou “Mighty Mo” Siligia, who was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injuries sustained in his quarterfinal match against Justice Smith. A lot of fans were left wondering how things might have turned out had Mighty Mo been able to continue and possibly meet Saki in the finals. UFC 87 bonuses for ‘Seek and Destroy’ PPV fights Posted: 10 Aug 2008 11:54 AM CDT
Despite a couple of one-sided contests, the promotion rewarded Georges “Rush” St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, as well as others, for their outstanding performances with cold hard cash. Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 87:
Each fighter received $60,000 for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as humanly possible. It's interesting that the main event took top honors. Granted the second round may have been the only one that was close, but the heart and determination of Jon Fitch was enough to impress the UFC brass - and most of the UFC fans in attendance. Congratulations goes out to Rob Emerson for doing what no one else expected him to by knocking out Manny Gamburyan. “The Anvil” might be a lot of things, but he is not easy to finish. The attendance at the Target Center was an impressive 15,082 with a total gate of $2.2 million - setting a new arena record that was originally held by a Billy Joel/Elton John concert.
