UFC Quick Quote: Wanderlei Silva on his ‘incredible’ fight against Rich Franklin at UFC 99

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 01:50 PM PST

Wanderlei Silva training

"… incredible, because he is the last champion before Anderson. He is a great fighter, a complete fighter and it is a good first fight for me in this division…. I didn't see this fight [with Henderson] but I have seen two or three of his fights. He is complete - good ground, good stand-up, good takedowns, and I think he is a very good fight for me. I am bringing in several sparring partners from Brazil that are also complete fighters, I will be ready for him."

– Wanderlei Silva talks to Fighters Only Magazine about his upcoming fight against Rich Franklin at UFC 99 from the the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13. “The Axe Murderer” is confident that he will be able to handle the weight cut to the proposed catchweight of 195 pounds, which could serve as a precursor to future fights at middleweight. This is a big fight for the Brazilian — he has dropped four of his last five fights — against a very tough opponent. He needs a win bad … especially if he does indeed have true aspirations on one day becoming a coach on The Ultimate Fighter.

Former UFC lightweight Din Thomas signs three-fight deal with Affliction

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 09:35 AM PST

Former UFC lightweight fighter Din Thomas (23-8), who once competed as a welterweight on season four of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), has signed a three-fight contract with Affliction MMA according to Five Ounces of Pain.

No opponent or debut date have been named at this time though Thomas is expected to enter the featherweight ranks.

“Dinyero” was a top contender in the stacked UFC 155-pound division prior to back-to-back losses to Kenny Florian (because he blew out his knee during the fight) and Josh Neer. Following that, Thomas announced his desire to compete at 145 pounds.

He never got the chance.

Thomas was given his walking papers by the UFC last May along with Travis Lutter, David Heath, Kalib Starnes, Joe Doerksen and John Halverson. Since then, he scored a submission win (triangle choke) over Dustin Pierkin at Headhunter Productions “The Patriot Act” earlier this month.

Affliction Entertainment Group Vice President, Tom Atencio, recently squashed rumors that pegged his promotion as being "done." Speculation has swirled that the upstart promotion was hemorraghing money after high-priced shows such as "Banned" and "Day of Reckoning" and was looking for a way out of the fight game.

Not so fast, says Mr. Atencio, there is more to come.

DREAM 7: Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Ross Ebanez

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 08:59 AM PST

Japan's Fighting Entertainment Group (FEG) today announced one additional match-up for DREAM 7 which features the opening round of its 2009 Featherweight Grand Prix from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on March 8.

Former PRIDE star Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-5-2) will be back in action looking to rebound from his TKO defeat at the hands of Eddie Alvarez last July at DREAM 5. “Crusher" will be taking on former Rumble on the Rock scrapper Ross Ebanez (19-6).

Like Kawajiri, “The Boss” shares a recent loss to uber-lightweight Eddie Alvaraez.

Also in action is WAMMA Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki (19-3), who was last seen making quick work of Eddie Alvarez in December 2008 (yes, Alvarez gets around). "Magic Pants" will suit up this time for David Gardner (16-10), which is expected to serve as a tune-up fight for the Japanese mainstay.

That's because Aoki is getting ready to move up in weight to participate in the DREAM 2009 Welterweight Grand Prix that begins in April. The fight between Aoki and Gardner will be fought at a catchweight of 163 pounds.

Joining them will be Mitsuhiro Ishida (17-4-1) against Daisuke Nakamura (19-9). Nakamura had a very good outing in 2008, winning seven straight — two of which were flying armbar victories … an impressive feat to say the least.

He'll take a step up in competition in the likes of Ishida and will certainly have his hands full.

Ishida has also been linked to appear in some capacity on Strikeforce's April 11 card, however that could now be in jeopardy depending on if he's able to make a quick enough turn around to fight again when the Showtime special airs on fight night.

Here is the current line-up for DREAM 7:

Featherweight Grand Prix Opening Round

Masakazu Imanari (15-6-1) vs. Atsushi Yamamoto (12-5-1)
Hiroyuki Takaya (9-6-1) vs. Jong Won Kim (0-0)
Yoshiro Maeda (23-6-2) vs. Micah Miller (10-2)
Chase Beebe (11-3) vs. Joe Warren (0-0)
Bibiano Fernandes (3-2) vs. Takafumi Otsuka (8-3-1)
Abel Cullum (13-2) vs. Akiyo Nishiura (9-3-1)

Catchweight (163 pounds):

Shinya Aoki (19-3) vs. David Gardner (16-10)

Lightweight:

Mitsuhiro Ishida (17-4-1) vs. Daisuke Nakamura (19-9)
Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-5-2) vs. Ross Ebanez (19-6)

Stay tuned for more last minute additions or changes as DREAM continues to fire them off.

Alistair Overeem set to face Remy Bonjasky at K-1 World GP 2009 on March 28

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 08:32 AM PST

Fighting and Entertainment Group (FEG) has confirmed that Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem will return to K-1 on March 28 to face World GP 2008 Champion Remy Bonjasky under K-1 rules at the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 from the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.

“Demolition Man” is coming off a first round destruction of former K-1 heavyweight champion Badr Hari at the Fields Dynamite!! super show on December 31.

Overeem has looked solid of late, winning five straight consecutive bouts and — before smashing his balls — was putting it to Mirko Cro Cop at DREAM 6 in September. Overeem has been in against some of the best in the business throughout his career and is still in his prime.

Still, one has to wonder if he's in over his head taking on a K-1 champion under K-1 rules. True, he dismantled former champion Hari with relative ease, but the Moroccan was competing just three weeks after his appearance in the 2008 Grand Prix Tournament where he fought three times in one night.

One of those opponents was eventual tournament winner Remy Bonjasky, who took the title via controversial disqualification in the GP Finals. Hari pulled Bonjasky to the ground in the second round and seemed to lose control of himself, pummeling the downed opponent and even trying to stomp on Bonjasky's face.

Bonjasky was allowed five minutes to recover but was still seeing double after the time elapsed and the referee called the match. Hari was stripped of his heavyweight title and received no pay for his participation in the event.

It’s going to be interesting to see just how far Overeem has come in his performance on March 28.

Also on the card, Melvin Manhoef will join the heavyweight tournament in a bid to lay claim to the heavyweight title that was stripped from Badr Hari following last year’s improprieties. While Hari will also be on the card, he is not included in the tournament and will instead rematch Errol Zimmerman from their match at the 2008 GP.

Here is the current line-up for the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009:

Superfights:
Alistair Overeem vs. Remy Bonjasky
Badr Hari vs. Errol Zimmerman
Jerome LeBanner vs. Ewerton Teixeira
Junichi Sawayashiki vs. Glaube Feitosa

Heavyweight Tournament:
Semifinal 1: Melvin Manhoef vs. Chalid “Die Faust”
Semifinal 2: Ruslan Karaev vs. Gokhan Saki
Reserve Fight: Tyrone Spong vs. Keijiro Maeda

Heavyweight Final:
Winner Semifinal 1 vs. Winner Semifinal 2

Stay tuned as this fight card continues to develop.

Former TUF 6 contestant Troy Mandaloniz released from his UFC contract

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 07:47 AM PST

Just six days removed from his unanimous decision loss to Paul Kelly at UFC 95 “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” on February 21, former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 contestant Troy Mandaloniz has been released from his UFC contract according to BJPenn.com.

“Rude Boy” went 1-1 in his two appearances inside the Octagon. After losing to Matt Arroyo in the quarter finals on the reality show, he went on to stop his former teammate Richie Hightower via first round technical knockout at the show's finale in December 2007 before getting outpointed by Kelly last Saturday.

Still, Mandaloniz is optimistic that he could return after proving himself on the smaller circuit.

“I thought I showed them what I was made of, but I guess not. I don’t think I see too many other fighters out there fighting with the same passion and intensity that I bring. I’m a fighter that people want to see fight and maybe one day after I prove myself again I could be back in the UFC.”

Mandaloniz joins fellow TUF 6 contestant Matt Arroyo as well as Nate Mohr, Rich Clementi, Luigi Fioravanti, Eddie Sanchez, Christian Wellisch, Reese Andy, and Derek Downey on the list of recent UFC roster cuts.

WEC 39 predictions and preview for ‘Brown vs Garcia’

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 06:11 AM PST

WEC 39: “Brown vs. Garcia” is set to go off from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, this Sunday night and will air live on the Versus network beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown will defend his title for the first time since knocking off superstar Urijah Faber in November. He’ll face the heavy-handed Greg Jackson trainee, Leonard Garcia, in the main event.

There are several other exciting match-ups featured on the card, too, and five bouts will be featured on the televised main card scheduled to air on fight night.

Here’s the full WEC 39 lineup:

Main event:

WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown (20-4) vs. Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia (12-3)

Main card (Televised):

145 lbs.: Jose "Junior" Aldo (13-1) vs. Chris Mickle (26-11-1)
155 lbs.: Bart "Bartimus" Palaszewski (30-11) vs. Ricardo Lamas (5-0)
155 lbs.: "Razor" Rob McCullough (16-5) vs. Marcus "The Wrecking Ball" Hicks (8-1)
170 lbs.: Johny Hendricks (4-0) vs. Alex "The Russian Crusher" Serdyukov (8-4)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

135 lbs.: Marcos "Louro" Galvao (6-2-1) vs. Damacio "The Angel of Death" Page (10-4)
155 lbs.: Mike "Wildfire" Budnik (7-1) vs. John Franchi (4-0)
170 lbs.: Justin Haskins (4-2) vs. Mike Pierce (6-1)
155 lbs.: Alex Karalexis (9-4) vs. Greg McIntyre (5-3)
155 lbs.: Danny Castillo (6-1) vs. Phil Cardella (7-2)
135 lbs.: Kenji Osawa (14-8-2) vs. Rafael Rebello (5-2)

It’s looks like we’re in for another solid night of fights from the WEC. To help get you better prepared for fight night, we took a closer look at each of the five main card bouts and provided our highly unofficial predictions below.

Check it out:

WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown (20-4) vs. Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia (12-3)

Garcia’s been on a tear since joining the WEC. In his two appearances for the promotion, he’s handed out first round knock outs to both the world-ranked Hiroyuki Takaya and the former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver.

This fight, however, is a little bit different stylistically. Where Takaya and Jens both prefer to stand and trade leather, Brown won’t hesitate to utilize his wrestling background by looking for takedowns to maintain cage control and land ground strikes.

That’s not to say necessarily that he won’t test Garcia on his feet for a while first, but if he starts to feel like he’s in trouble, Brown can and will turn to his wrestling.

For Garcia, that’s certainly something to be worried about. In April of 2007 at UFC 69, Roger Huerta basically exploited Garcia’s wrestling game, or lack there of, en route to a pretty one-sided beatdown … albeit an exciting beatdown.

You wouldn’t know it from his last two fights either, but Garcia does have a solid background in jiu jitsu. He’s dangerous on the ground from his back and can pull a submission off from anywhere.

But Mike Brown is one of the strongest 145-pound fighters in the world. If he can manage to keep control of this fight with his strength and wrestling base by keeping a dominant top position when the fight goes to the mat, it’s going to be a long night for the challenger.

It’s easy to get sucked into thinking that someone’s going to sleep early on in this one because of the devastating manner in which they both finished their last opponents. But the fact is that both of these guys are grapplers when it comes down to it. This one’s going to the scorecards.

Final prediction: Brown via unanimous decision

145 lbs.: Jose "Junior" Aldo (13-1) vs. Chris Mickle (26-11-1)

Mickle is a submission guy with notable career wins over Jeremy Stephens, Brian Geraghty, TJ O’Brien and others. He’s making his debut for the WEC in this fight.

Aldo, on the other hand, is making his fourth straight start for the promotion. And he’s been very impressive each time out. He boasts a fantastic striking game and is also a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu. And at only 22 years old, the confident fighter already believes he has what it takes to be the best pound for pound mixed martial artist in the world.

Here’s a snip:

“I’m the number one pound-for-pound fighter just above Georges St. Pierre. I consider myself so because the way I see it is that I have the three prerequisites: I’m great standing, with my takedowns, and on the ground, with Jiu-Jitsu.”

Mickle — a cagey veteran with numerous underground fights to his credit as well — will no doubt look to avoid trading strikes with the lighting quick Brazilian, but he better be careful when he shoots for takedowns or he might end up on the wrong end of an Aldo knee.

We’ve yet to really see what kind of ground game Aldo has, but obviously with the black belt, he has to be formidable. This fight could be the WEC’s way of testing his all around skills before granting him a title shot. He’ll be facing a much more experienced and proven fighter who could easily be considered his toughest opponent to date.

Expect this one to be closer than most people think, but Aldo’s overall athleticism and versatility should be enough to get the nod.

Final prediction: Aldo via unanimous decision

155 lbs.: Bart "Bartimus" Palaszewski (30-11) vs. Ricardo Lamas (15-0)

Lamas made his pro debut last January and went on to fight four more times in 2008. Impressive victories over James Birdsley and Cal Ferry are more than likely what prompted the WEC to come calling when Rich Crunkilton went down with a knee injury and was forced to pull out.

He steps in on four days notice to face 12 fight IFL veteran Bart Palaszewski who will be making his second appearance for the WEC.

This match was initially intended to be a number one contender eliminator match, and that offer is probably still good in Palaszewski’s case if he can win impressively.

Bartimus had a tough streak there for a while that saw him lose three fights in a row, but he’s bounced back strong with two technical knockout wins since the IFL went under last year. We look for him to continue that streak by overwhelming the less experienced Lamas.

Lamas looks like a decent prospect, and he has a good amateur wrestling background as a NCAA division III All-American. But facing a well tested veteran like Palaszewski in only your sixth pro fight, on only four days notice, is a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

Final prediction: Palaszewski via submission

155 lbs.: "Razor" Rob McCullough (16-5) vs. Marcus "The Wrecking Ball" Hicks (8-1)

Both these guys have solid wrestling, as well as quick and powerful hands. They’re both explosive and they can both end fights with their hands or with submissions. This is probably the toughest fight on the card to judge.

McCullough’s hit a bit of a dry spell recently, losing two of his last three fights, but to be fair, both of those fights were to top level competition and both were extremely competitive.

In his most recent loss to Donald Cerrone, his chin was tested numerous times and he probably gained a lot of self confidence from that fight in that regard. That might not necessarily be a good thing against Hicks though.

Hicks hits like a truck. If Razor Rob gets too comfortable in the pocket and leaves himself open, Marcus definitely has the power to put him to sleep.

McCullough knows what’s at stake here though — he needs a win more than he needs an impressive win. Hicks’ stamina hasn’t really been tested yet. He’s never even been out of the second round. Meanwhile, Razor Rob’s last two fights have both gone to a decision.

The longer the fight goes on, therefore, the more it should favor McCullough.

Look for him to take sort of a Josh Koscheck approach to Diego Sanchez, where he’ll keep his distance and try to pick his spots, scoring points on his feet while adding some late round take down attempts for icing. Whether that plan will work against the "Wrecking Ball" or not is another story.

Final prediction: McCullough via unanimous decision

170 lbs.: Johny Hendricks (4-0) vs. Alex "The Russian Crusher" Serdyukov (8-4)

This is probably the last welterweight fight in the history of the WEC and it’s one that was supposed to happen originally way back in September on the WEC 36 card.

Hendricks is a decorated wrestler from Oklahoma State University who now trains MMA full time with Team Takedown. He’ll be making his fifth professional start and second under the WEC banner. He has a ton of energy and appears to be able to take a good amount of punishment and still finish a fight.

Serdyukov provides an interesting match-up and a stiff test for the fast rising prospect in that he’s just as aggressive, and he’s probably a little more well rounded with his striking and submissions, not to mention more experienced.

This feels like a dangerous match-up for Hendricks, but Serdyukov has had trouble with good wrestlers in the past, notably Jon Fitch and John Alessio, who he lost to twice by submission. Look for this to be a very competitive, high paced fight with Hendricks’ hand raised at the end.

Final prediction: Hendricks via submission

That’s a wrap. Remember, MMAmania.com will provide live coverage of the action on fight night beginning with the 9:30 p.m. telecast on Versus as well as up to the minute quick results of the entire under card.

Check in early and often. In the meantime, feel free to leave your WEC 39-related thoughts and predictions in the comments section below.

Feel It! Nutrition blowout sale: $20 off ALL STACKS starting today for a limited time

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 05:12 AM PST

It’s Fitness Friday ladies and Maniacs and while I usually take this time to cover a certain aspect of training or supplementation, the guys and gals over at Feel It! Nutrition have plum lost their minds and started slashing inventory like Jason Voorhees at a YMCA day camp.

Truth be told, no Stack is safe in this fire sale, so don’t just sit there trying to remember how long it’s been since you actually touched a piece of exercise equipment, get clicking and take advantage of the $20 off Feel It! Nutrition is offering on ALL STACKS from now until March 5 — but don’t procrastinate — supplies are limited!

Don't worry about trying to figure out which nutritional supplements are going to help you achieve or maintain your current fitness goals. The Feel It! Nutrition experts have already done the research for you and assembled some of the most comprehensive stacks available to help you attain almost any fitness goal.

Looking to get huge?

Why not give the mighty Bulk Stack a try. Or perhaps you are already of considerable girth and want to get lean. No problem. Feel It! Nutrition created Lean Stack with you in mind.

Of course no MMA blog would be complete without the highly acclaimed MMA Stack. Designed for fighters, by fighters.

And in an effort to prove we haven't forgotten about the lovely ladies that bust their butts inside and outside the gym, Feel It! Nutrition is also including their Women's Stack — because a woman's body (besides being able to hypnotize and control the male population) has very distinct nutritional needs.

Now it was a big decision here at MMAmania to align ourselves exclusively with one company. When you put your name on something, you sink or swim right along with them.

Having said that, the biggest influence in our decision was the reputation Feel It! Nutrition has developed in the industry not just for their rock-bottom prices, but for their customer service and impeccable shipping.

It should also be noted that they’re not peddling ‘Tom and Joe’s Protein Powder’ that was cooked up in some dirty lab in Poughkeepsie. This is quality stuff from major brands that are both recognizable and reputable.

From personal experience, I have nothing but high praise for their MMA Stack. I use it as a part of my training because it’s such a versatile Stack. Whether I’m bulking up in the off season or going hard to lean out for the summer, it satisfies my core needs.

I’m a huge Glutamine guy, especially the ISS Complete. It’s one of those miracle supplements that keeps me from feeling the aches and pains of yesterday’s workout. One serving immediately following the gym and another two hours later and it’s go time by morning.

I also like the Pro Lab Whey Chocolate. It’s tasty enough to stand on its own but also mixes well with my oatmeal in the morning when I need to get some protein in my system.

MMA Stack consists of the following cutting-edge supplements:

Protein Powder: Pro Lab Pure Whey Chocolate (5 lb.)
Creatine: Axis Labs Creatine Ethyl Ester (240 Capsules)
L-Glutamine: ISS Complete L-Glutamine Power (14.1 oz.)
Amino Acids: Universal Amino 1000 (500 Capsules)

If you’re serious about your training then now is the time to act. You can’t get a comprehensive Stack like the ones being offered at this price anywhere else but here, so take advantage of the $20 off sale and STACK UP.

Don't delay … this sale ends March 5.

Joe Lauzon out at least 12 months because of knee surgery

Posted: 26 Feb 2009 07:36 PM PST

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight contender Joe Lauzon will undergo season-ending knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus, which will keep The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 alum on the sidelines for the remainder of 2009.

Here’s a snip from his Web site:

“The surgery scheduled for next week will not be so simple. Unlike the last two times, I will need my meniscus repaired. Instead of just shaving that little piece out, they will be stitching it up and getting it to sit back in place. To make things much worse, I need to have my ACL repaired as well. They think my torn ACL is causing my knee to shift ever so slightly and its destroying my meniscus…. Long story short … I will be off my feet for a month to a month and a half… training SUPER light in about 4 or 5 months … training decently hard in about 9 months and fighting in around 12-14 months. It’s going to be a long rehab … but that’s how it goes.”

Lauzon most recently saw action against Jeremy Stephens in the UFC Fight Night 17 main event in Tampa, Fla., on Feb. 14. He took out “Lil’ Heathen” with a second round armbar to notch his second straight win inside the Octagon.

Prior to the back-to-back victories, Lauzon was one of the many recent victims of Kenny Florian courtesy of a second round technical knockout loss at UFC Fight Night 13 back in April. It was a temporary setback for the Boston-area native and he appeared to be climbing his way back toward the top of the division before this latest news.

"J-Lau" was the favorite to win The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 season before meeting up with Manny Gamburyan in the semifinals. He has five wins in six attempts inside the Octagon.

There were seemingly several possible opponents for Lauzon this year, including Hermes Franca, Spencer Fisher and Nate Diaz, among others. Those match ups will now have to simmer until Lauzon is healed up and ready to return.

Hopefully, it’s sooner rather than later.

Frank Shamrock: Ken Shamrock cut himself to escape fight with Kimbo Slice

Posted: 26 Feb 2009 07:27 PM PST

Props: Five Ounces of Pain

Quoteworthy:

I think Ken cut himself. It goes back to his giant ego and not being smart enough to understand the rest of the business. I think he got upset because Kimbo was making twice as much as he was and I don't think his ego could take it. I know for a fact that he tried to hold the network up for more money the day before the show and unfortunately his parting words were, "Well, then you never know what will happen because anything can happen." Then when he showed up with the cut we all thought he juiced himself. You know, he's not to be trusted … a real fighter would have superglued it and put makeup on it and been and would have been out there fighting. Which (is something) I have done and many fighters have done many times … I have no idea what he's doing. I just hope when he's finished destroying himself that he has something left to live by.

-Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Frank Shamrock comments to Sam Caplan on brother Ken’s last-minute withdrawal from his EliteXC main event fight against Kimbo Slice last October due to (a possible self-inflicted) cut sustained hours for the bout. Frank — who had not been training for a fight and competes at 185 pounds — volunteered to fight the much larger Slice on two hours notice. Unfortunately CBS executives reportedly nixed the idea and opted to go with Seth Petruzelli instead. The rest, as "they" say is history. Despite moments of civility, the adopted and quasi-estranged brothers are back on bad terms following the illness of their father Bob. Family Feud, MMA style. For the rest of the interview click here.

Former EliteXC welterweight contender Nick Thompson signs with Strikeforce

Posted: 26 Feb 2009 07:06 PM PST

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm that former EliteXC number one contender and the last man to hold the Bodog Fight welterweight championship Nick Thompson (38-10-1) has joined the roster of the San Jose-based mixed martial arts promotion ‘Strikeforce’ with a possible debut targeted for April 11.

“The Goat” is coming off back-to-back wins since being submitted early in the first round of his EliteXC title bout with Jake Shields last July. His most recent victory was a unanimous decision nod over talented British striker Paul “Semtex” Daley on last month’s MFC 20: “Destined for Greatness” card.

Before the loss to Shields, Thompson was on a ridiculous run of success that saw him take 20 of 21 fights, including notable wins over Eddie Alvarez, Chris Wilson, Mark Weir, Josh Neer and others. The only loss during that streak was a first round submission (strikes) to Karo Parisyan at UFC 59: “Reality Check” — one of only two career appearances in the Octagon.

This signing certainly bolsters the welterweight division significantly for Strikeforce - a promotion which has yet to crown a 170-pound champion.

However, the contract with Strikeforce won’t be an exclusive one. Thompson is also employed by World Victory Road’s “Sengoku.” In fact, he plans on competing in the welterweight grand prix tournament for the Japanese promotion later this year.

It’s going to be a busy year for the Goat.

Strikeforce paid $3 million for the rights to the complete EliteXC video library earlier this month, which includes a total of 20 live events put on by the company, as well as 42 of the 80 or so fighter contracts that were left over from the collapse of the company last October.

With a solid reputation, proven track record and smart management, expect them to be a major player in the MMA biz going forward.

The April 11 Strikeforce card will feature Nick Diaz and Frank Shamrock facing off in the evening's main event at a catchweight of 179 pounds. Also scheduled to do battle is Scott Smith as he faces Benji Radach and Joe Riggs taking on former EliteXC Welterweight Champion Jake Shields.

Randy Couture vs Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira UFC 101 fight possible for August

Posted: 26 Feb 2009 12:55 PM PST

Former champions and mixed martial arts legends Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira could meet in an epic match up at UFC 101 in August, according to MMAWeekly.com.

The report does not provide a date or location for the event; however, it indicates that “The Natural” has agreed to the clash of heavyweight titans.

This, of course, is the dream match up that most fans expected to see on May 23 before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.

Couture recently indicated that he was interested in a fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic when the promotion storms the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, for UFC 99 on June 13. However, he apparently did not have enough time to prepare because he will be on a movie set alongside action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action flick "The Expendables."

This is not the first time that Couture has been offered a fight with “Big Nog.” He balked at the opportunity while he was in a contract dispute with the promotion for most of 2008, saying the fight that he wanted most was one against WAMMA deity Fedor Emelianenko.

Now that he is coming off surgery and another movie role, UFC 101 could finally be the event that brings the former kings together.

More on this in a bit.

The event will air during prime time on April 4 on ESPN Deportes.

"We are thrilled to be premiering at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino," said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. The event will feature tournament bouts in the Featherweight (145 lbs.), Lightweight (155 lbs.) and Middleweight (185 lbs.) divisions, showcasing two of the world's best Lightweights (Eddie Alvarez and Jorge Masvidal) as well as featured non-tournament bouts and a top women's fight highlighting Miami's own Jessica Aguilar, an American Top Team fighter who has established a 5-2 record.

The fight card is detailed below:

Tournament bouts:

155 lbs.: Eddie Alvarez (16-2) vs. Daniel Morales (5-1)
155 lbs.: Jorge Masvidal (16-3) vs. Diego Garijo (3-1)
145 lbs.: Nick Gonzalez (14-6) vs. Yahir Reyes (12-5)
145 lbs.: Estevan Payan (6-1) vs. Luis Palomino (9-4)
145 lbs.: Joe Soto (4-0) vs. Ben Greer (11-4)

The bout between Alvarez and Morales pits an aggressive and hungry Alvarez against the notoriously tough Daniel Morales. Though Morales has only been to decision once, his bout with Alvarez marks a significant step up in competition for the former Cage of Fire Lightweight champ.

Taking a similar step up in competition is Diego Garijo, a decorated grappler who is in the best condition of his career. He will face off against Miami's own Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal is known for his strength and endurance at Lightweight and with Garijo's stellar conditioning, their bout promises to be a strong contender for fight of the night.

The event will also feature exciting matchups in the Featherweight division, including Nick Gonzalez who will compete against Yahir Reyes. As both are tremendous stand up fighters, this battle will likely be the best match up of striking skills of the division. Estevan Payan and Luis Palomino are set to compete in the Featherweight division as well. With aggressive, "in your face" styles, Payan and Palomino are expected to give tough fights until the end. The Featherweight matchup between Joe Soto and Ben Greer will be an interesting technical battle. Both are dominant wrestlers with solid jiu-jitsu backgrounds; their fight promises to be a true test of who rules on the ground.

Bellator Fighting Championships' premiere season consists of 12 two-hour events to be broadcast weekly in primetime on Saturday nights. The nationally televised events will feature a combination of tournament and non-tournament special feature bouts. There will be four simultaneous tournaments taking place in season #1 over a three month period: one in each of the Featherweight (145 lb.), Lightweight (155 lb.), Welterweight (170 lb.) and Middleweight (185 lb.) divisions.

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday March 3, at 12:00 pm EST, and can be purchased at the Hard Rock Live Hollywood box office or Ticketmaster.com. Ticket prices are $25, $50, $100 and $150. For tickets to the live event, please visit Ticketmaster.com beginning Tuesday, March 3, 2009.

UFC Quick Quote: Country breakfast prompts Paul Kelly to drop ten pounds and one division

Posted: 26 Feb 2009 10:59 AM PST

"I'm definitely dropping to 155-pounds now, it makes sense. I was eating a big breakfast on the morning of the weigh-in last Friday (for UFC 95). While everyone else is dying to make weight, I'm sitting there with a big bowl of muesli and a glass of orange juice. I'll just have to cut 10-pounds and that's it. It's no big deal. All the lightweights in my gym are bigger than me in between fights. They walk around at about 83 kilos and I walk around at about 81 or 82 kilos. I won't lose any strength moving down. Nobody can keep me on my back in the gym and that will stay like that at lightweight."

-UFC welterweight Paul Kelly, fresh off his thrilling three-round victory over Troy Mandaloniz at UFC 95 “Sanchez vs. Stevenson,” tells UFC.com that his next fight will be in the lightweight division for the simple fact that it would only require a ten pound cut — mere child’s play by today’s standards. "Tellys" is a welcome addition to lightweight — or any other weight class in the UFC for that matter so long as he continues to put on performances like he did last Friday at the O2 Arena on London, England.

WEC 39 headliners Mike Thomas Brown and Leonard Garcia trade predictions before their March 1 title bout

Posted: 26 Feb 2009 10:58 AM PST

WEC 39: "Brown vs. Garcia," is set to take place from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 1 and will air live on the Versus network beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET on fight night.

WEC featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown will defend his 145-pound title for the first time against Leonard Garcia since capturing the crown from superstar Urijah Faber in November 2008. Garcia — a disciple of MMA trainer extraordinaire Greg Jackson — has earned his status as the number one contender after winning his first two fights for the promotion with first round knockouts.

Fortunately for us, we don't have to wait until next Sunday for the battle to begin.

Headlining this week’s episode of MMAmania.com's exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio, both Brown and Garcia stopped by the show to give us their take on Sunday’s title fight. And “Bad Boy” wasn’t wasting any time.

“As far as wrestling, everyone knows wrestling was one of my weaker points, Roger (Huerta) sneezed on me (at UFC 69) and took me down. I’ve come a long way since that fight and wrestling’s been one of my points I’ve been working on. I don’t want this to be a boring fight, where Mike just takes me down and holds position and lays there. I want it to be an explosive fight. That’s what I’ve been working for and I hope Mike’s ready for that. Actually, I hope he’s not. I hope he’s been out there training with BJ Penn (and taking five days off).”

Brown wasn’t amused by the Team Jackson protege. There is a strong rivalry between Greg Jackson’s camp and Brown’s American Top Team (ATT), perhaps the two best training camps in all of mixed martial arts.

“[ATT has] incredible depth. We have so many good guys. At a normal gym you only have three or four tough guys and if one gets sick or is away then you run out of partners. Here you have so many that when a couple of them go down you still have five top guys there to train you. That’s what makes us so good. We’re here to help each other.”

A lot of fans didn’t get a chance to see that depth because of the manner in which Brown finished WEC featherweight kingpin Urijah Faber last November. A win that Leonard Garcia sees as doing more harm than good.

“Him knocking out Urijah could be the best thing for me. Now he thinks he’s a big puncher. I have a reach on him, a lot more speed, my footwork is better … he’s kind of slow. Mike’s a big strong tank and he can do damage when ever he does bulldoze you over so I have to take the aerial attack and come up over him and take shots from different angles. I’m a better striker and he’s a better wrestler so it’s classic ’striker vs. grappler’ but I work good off my back so don’t think once he takes me down ‘Damn, he got him‘.”

Garcia’s opinion on the striking of Brown overlooks the self-described technique of the former Bodog Fight warrior who cautions not to choose style over substance.

“I’m not slow, I’m methodical. I keep my hands up, I’m not wild, I take my time and I look for big shots. I don’t throw combinations. That’s my game, that’s how I fight. I hit really hard. I’m definitely one of the big punchers at American Top Team. My jiu-jitsu is good, I train with [guys like] Marcelo Garcia and I definitely have better wrestling. I finish people from the top.”

One thing Garcia agrees with Brown on is the way the fight ends. It seems both fighters predict a finish and based on their respective records, it’s hard to argue against that prediction.

“This fight doesn’t go five rounds. I can’t call which round it’s gonna end, Mike has a good chin and so do I. This is what I hope: I hope Mike stands with me and makes it interesting for the fans. He says he’s the hardest hitter at 145, I say okay, let’s find out March 1.”

Brown concurs, but thinks it might be wrapped up a little sooner than Garcia does.

“I don’t see this going the distance. We both hit hard. Anybody can get dropped at anytime but neither of us have been knocked out. I imagine it ending before the third round.”

Whenever it ends, no question it’s going to be an exciting fight — one with major title implications with so many talented fighters waiting in the wings.

Don’t miss it.

Team St. Pierre formally responds to NSAC request filed by BJ Penn following UFC 94

Posted: 26 Feb 2009 09:02 AM PST

Head Trainer Greg Jackson and George St. Pierre cornerman Phil Nurse have formally responded to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) in defense of a letter sent to the NSAC by BJ Penn earlier this month to address greasing allegations in their welterweight title fight at UFC 94 on January 31.

The response, available here courtesy of the LATimes.com, is in defense of a formal request (not a complaint) sent to the NSAC by the legal team that represents lightweight champion BJ Penn designed to ensure that the sanctioning body engages "in a comprehensive investigation and review of the activities involving and relating to Georges St. Pierre prior to and during the bout."

St. Pierre's cornermen during the fight applied Vaseline to his back and shoulders, which caught the eye of ringside officials when they noticed the petroleum jelly on the backside of the Canadian and sprung into action, wiping him down with towels after rounds two and three.

"Rush" hasn’t given any excuses for the incident, saying it was just a minor mistake caused by the between-round frenzy and was part of a breathing technique. UFC President Dana White — who’s been taking the issue very seriously — has since blamed "stupid" cornermen (Greg Jackson and Phil Nurse) for the infraction.

The Penn letter to the NSAC indicated that not only is greasing illegal, but it taints the reputation of the sport and jeopardizes the health and safety of those who participate in it.

Furthermore, it states the application of Vaseline put Penn at a serious disadvantage during the fight because as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, "The Prodigy" relies on his ability to apply techniques and strategies designed to immobilize or cause potential injury to his opponent.

With that ability neutralized, Penn's attorney contends that his client was put in an environment that was both "life threatening" and "career ending."

Perhaps the most damaging part of the letter was the accusation that a member from Team Penn had asked the NSAC prior to the bout to pay special attention to St. Pierre because of the possibility of Team GSP engaging in activities that would intentionally make him more slippery.

Today’s response from the St. Pierre camp vehemently denies those allegations and goes so far as to blame the entire “Grease Gate” charade on Penn’s bruised ego following a fight in which he was clearly dominated.

Here’s a snip:

“We believe strongly that we have done nothing to violate Nevada State Athletic Commission rules or to otherwise impugn the outcome of UFC 94, the integrity of the UFC or the sport and that the letter [of complaint by Penn] constitutes nothing more than Mr. Penn’s desperate attempt to protect his reputation and commercial value after being totally dominated by a superior athlete.”

Penn is expected to proceed with a formal complaint in the coming days and the NSAC will have to weigh both sides to determine what disciplinary action should be taken — if any.

Sorry folks, this one isn’t over. Not by a long shot.

Cain Velasquez vs Heath Herring UFC 99 fight in the works for Germany

Posted: 25 Feb 2009 03:44 PM PST

Undefeated heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez (5-0) will face the stiffest test of his bright career when he locks horns with mixed martial arts veteran Heath Herring (28-14) at UFC 99 from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13.

MMAmania.com has learned that the match up is expected to be a featured bout on the main card on fight night.

Velasquez most recently mugged Denis Stojnic at UFC Fight Night 17 for a round and a half en route to a second round technical knockout victory. It marked just the first time that a Velasquez opponent has made it out of the opening frame.

The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) revealed after the fight that he was disappointed with the dominating performance and vowed to come back better than an ever in his next appearance. He’ll need to do just that to have success against a crafty vet such as Herring.

Velasquez now holds wins inside the Octagon against Stojnic, Jake O’Brien and Brad Morris.

“The Texas Crazy Horse” has not seen action since a unanimous decision loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” back in August 2008. He sustained a serious eye injury during the fight, which required him to remain on the sidelines for the remainder of the 2009 fight season.

Lesnar, on the other hand, went on to defeat Randy Couture via technical knockout nearly three months later to capture the division crown.

Herring has had mixed results since joining the promotion in early 2007, losing three fights and winning two. He has gone the distance in all five of those fights. Drawing a fighter with a strong wrestling background who keeps the pedal to the metal throughout the fight such as Velasquez is going to be difficult to handle.

However, Herring has been in against the best in the business and is very capable wherever the fight ends up.

Miguel Torres vs Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 40 with Brian Bowles injured

Posted: 25 Feb 2009 11:59 AM PST

Miguel Torres

MMAmania.com has learned that WEC bantamweight number one contender Brian Bowles has suffered an undisclosed injury in training and has been scratched from the main event of WEC 40, which is set to go down at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Ill., on Sunday, April 5.

The undefeated Hardcore Gym prospect was set to face Miguel Torres for the WEC 135-pound title in the featured fight on the card. Instead, world-ranked division competitor Takeya Mizugaki has been tapped to fill-in for Bowles on short notice.

Mizugaki (11-2-2) is currently on a five-fight win streak under the Greatest Common Multiple banner, which is a Japanese promotion. He’s also a 10-fight veteran of the Shooto promotion, which has also featured other top mixed martial artists such as Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, Shinya Aoki, Anderson Silva, Tatsuya Kawajiri and others.

Torres — a Chicago native — is making his return to mixed martial arts action in his hometown. While it’s not necessarily the most envious position to be in — facing Torres in his homecoming — it’s still a rare shot at a world title for the 25-year-old Japanese standout.

WEC 40 will also feature former featherweight number on contender Jeff Curran against Joseph Benavidez — training partner of Urijah Faber — in the co-main event for the right to become the division’s number one contender.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this developing story.

UFC Fight Night 18 results and live coverage for Condit vs Kampmann on April 1

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today confirmed several bouts for its SpikeTV telecast scheduled for April 1 at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

UFC Fight Night 18: "Condit vs. Kampmann" features the Octagon debut of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Welterweight Champion and top-ranked 170-pound fighter Carlos Condit taking on Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann in the main event.

Joining Bader from the annals of TUF 8 lore will be lightweight winner Efrain Escudero battling Jeremy “Even” Stephens, as well as “The Lunatic” Junie Browning when he tries to prove his worth against the durable Cole “Magrino” Miller.

MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the promotion's first pilgrimage to the "The Volunteer State," beginning with the 9 p.m. ET SpikeTV telecast. In addition, up-to-the-minute quick results of the under card action will begin to flow earlier around 7:30 p.m. ET.

Ricardo Lamas set to replace Rich Crunkilton at WEC 39 against Bart Palaszewski

Posted: 25 Feb 2009 08:48 AM PST

Twelve-fight International Fight League (IFL) veteran Bart "Bartimus" Palaszewski (30-11) is making his second appearance for the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) promotion at this Sunday’s WEC 39: "Brown vs. Garcia" event — only it won’t be against original opponent Richard Crunkilton.

"Cleat" blew out his knee in training and will be replaced by the undefeated Ricardo “The Bully” Lamas in his WEC debut.

Palaszewski debuted for the promotion at WEC 37: "Torres vs. Tapia" last December, snuffing out UFC veteran Alex Karalexis via second round technical knockout. During his time with the IFL he scored notable wins over guys like Steve Bruno, Ivan Menjivar, Ryan Schultz, Harris Sarmiento and others.

However, his last three fights with the organization were all losses. He was submitted in the second round by Deividas Taurosevicius at the 2007 IFL Team Championships and then outpointed in a split decision loss to Chris Horodecki at the IFL World Grand Prix Semi Finals two months later.

He also dropped a unanimous decision to current UFC fighter Jim Miller last April in New Jersey.

Lamas comes into the WEC after mixing it up at “Warriors Collide” and most recently “Ironheart Crown,” where he outpointed Christopher Martin in a three round decision back in November.

The Chicago-based fighter trains out of Team Top Notch and has a solid wrestling pedigree. He’ll need it to have a chance against the experience of Bartimus.

WEC 39: "Brown vs. Garcia" is a packed 11-fight card that is scheduled for the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 1. It's the first time ever that the Zuffa-owned promotion will stage an event in the "Lone Star State" and can be seen live on the Versus Network starting at 9pm ET.

Former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho training for April return on ESPN

“Everything points to April 3rd, in the United States. The event will be broadcast on ESPN, and should be in Las Vegas. I don't know the name of the event yet, my agent is coming to Brazil will all the papers for me to sign. I just know I'll fight on the 3rd and want to get back in the ring.”

-Former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho (16-1) all but confirms that he will compete in the Bellator Fighting Championship eight man tournament, which will air weekly on ESPN Deportes beginning in April. “Ely” dropped the first fight of his career back in November via unanimous decision to Chael Sonnen - a bout he weighed in for at a whopping nine pounds over the limit. There was clearly something off about the ex-champ that night as he appeared disinterested in the fight and exhibited some bizarre behavior inside the cage, perhaps a result of the depression issues and substance abuse in the months leading up to fight. According to the article, however, he is back on track and training with a better sense of focus now. Hopefully he’s cleaned up for real because he’s far too talented to abandon his career like it appeared he was doing in his last appearance.

WEC 40: Diego Nunes vs Cub Swanson

Posted: 25 Feb 2009 08:04 AM PST

A battle between up-and-coming featherweight scrappers Cub Swanson (13-2) and Diego “The Gun” Nunes (12-0) has been added to the WEC 40: “Torres vs. Bowles” card, set to go down on April 5 from the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

Swanson started his mixed martial arts career with eleven straight wins after dropping his debut to current UFC veteran Shannon Gugerty in 2004. The WEC signed him in early 2007 and he went on to win his first two fights for the promotion against Tommy Lee (submission) and Micah Miller (decision).

At WEC 31 in December of 2007 Cub dropped his first contest under the WEC banner by succumbing to a first round guillotine choke laid down by former UFC champion Jens “Little Evil” Pulver. The loss was a setback for the Southern California native for sure, but recent wins over Donnie Walker (submission) and most recently Hiroyuki Takaya (decision) at WEC 37 in December have put Swanson back on the map.

His opponent, 26-year old Team Nogueira Brazil product Diego Nunes, has yet to lose a professional MMA match. He’s managed to stop eleven of his twelve foes before the final bell (six by submission and five by technical knockout). He made his WEC debut on the WEC 37 card with a unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Cole Province.

Slowly the WEC’s featherweight division is starting to fill up with viable contenders for current champion Mike Thomas Brown. With guys like Urijah Faber, Wagnney Fabiano, Jose Aldo, Leonard Garcia and others ready and waiting for their chance, a loss for either of these two guys could drop that fighter out of any sort of title contention for quite some time, meaning this and all 145-pound fights under the WEC banner have become very important.

The main card of WEC 40 will air live on the Versus network beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET on fight night and will feature a main event with hometown hero Miguel Torres defending his 135 pound title against number one contender Brian Bowles.

Marcus Davis wants to pound Dan Hardy’s face into dust at UFC 99

Quoteworthy:

“All I will say is I told Joe Silva to make this happen for June 13th in Germany — neutral ground for both of us. So it is in Joe Silva’s control. This whole ‘calling me out’ thing started at the Q&A in London when his manager sent up a guy to ask me if I would fight Dan and I said lets do it. I think he is a talented fighter but I also think I will pound his face into dust. Anyone who thinks he’s more technical then me — you are allowed to your opinion even though it is wrong. I fight each fight differently because YOU HAVE TO. This fight wont look like the others just as the others don’t look like the ones before them.”

Marcus Davis is not backing down from a challenge that Dan Hardy issued following a knockout win over Rory Markham at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” this past weekend. “The Outlaw” mentioned wanting to fight “The Irish Hand Grenade” numerous times in his post-fight interviews. It seems as though his rhetoric may have worked — Davis told UFC matchmaker Joe Silva to set it up for UFC 99 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13. Sounds like a plan. A good one.
