UFC Quick Quote: Anderson Silva is pound-for-pound better than Georges St. Pierre

“I still wouldn’t call him pound for pound the best in the world, but he’s No. 2, no doubt about it. Georges takes out Thiago Alves? He’s on his way. I would say Georges St. Pierre would be neck and neck with Anderson had he not lost to Matt Serra.”

– UFC President Dana White tells SI.com that he feels his middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, is still the top pound-for-pound fighter in mixed martial arts even after welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre stopped lightweight front runner BJ Penn at UFC 94 over the weekend. White has indicated that the two could collide in the near future in yet another megafight. Silva has to first get past Thales Leites at UFC 97 in April and St. Pierre will likely have to defend his belt against number one division contender, Thiago Alves, sometime later this year.

UFC 94: NSAC tests 12 fighters for drugs after ‘St. Pierre vs Penn 2′ event

Posted: 02 Feb 2009 09:45 PM CST

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) announced today that 12 of the 20 combatants who competed at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 31 were tested for illegal/banned substances.

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, lightweight division leader BJ Penn, Lyoto Machida, Thiago Silva, Clay Guida, Nate Diaz, Stephan Bonnar, Jon Jones, Jake O’Brien, John Howard, Thiago Tavares and Karo Parisyan were all screened for performance enhancers such as steroids, as well as drugs of abuse like cocaine and marijuana, among others.

Results of these tests should be available soon, which MMAmania.com will pass along as quickly as possible. The fighters mentioned above were randomly selected. However, the NSAC often tests the main event participants and fight night winners, as well as those who have failed tests in the past.

UFC dished out $1.1 million in fighter salaries for the pay-per-view (PPV) event and another $325,000 in additional bonus money for five participants who delivered outstanding performances.

St. Pierre defeated Penn via fourth round technical knockout to retain his 170-pound crown in the UFC 94 main event. Machida took one giant step toward earning a 205-pound title shot in the very near future, blasting the previously undefeated Thiago Silva with a thundering first round knockout punch.

UFC Fight Night 17 results and LIVE fight coverage Feb. 7

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) machine will continue to roll this upcoming weekend with a fight night special planned for the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., on Feb. 7.

UFC Fight Night 17 is the first-ever show for the promotion on the west coast of the “Sunshine State.” It features a re-worked main event fight between explosive lightweights Joe Lauzon and Jeremy Stephens. Hermes Franca was supposed to get top billing; however, an injury while training made him a last-minute scratch.

In fact, Franca is among several athletes originally scheduled to compete on the card who sustained pre-fight injuries. The good news is that the UFC has been able to plug all the holes. And today the company confirmed the final line up.

Here is the latest official UFC Fight Night 17 fight card:

Greasy like Sunday morning: Lowering the flame on the ‘St. Pierre vs Penn’ aftermath

Posted: 02 Feb 2009 03:01 PM CST

UFC 94 ‘St. Pierre vs. Penn 2′ is finally, mercifully, in the books.

As a realist, I didn’t expect the main event to live up to the lofty expectations we bestowed on it but then again, how could it?

I probably enjoyed the pre-fight hype more than I did the actual contest, thanks largely in part to the one-sided drubbing by St. Pierre, who looks pretty much unstoppable at this point.

As a fan of mixed martial arts, I’m okay with that. Sometimes a much ballyhooed fight will come up short - just as sometimes a bout with little-to-no fanfare can blow the roof off an arena.

It’s a give and take relationship, one I think gives more than it takes.

Then again, what you get out of a pay-per-view (PPV) or live event depends primarily on your perspective going into it. When your hero wins, all is right with the world. When he loses, the PPV was a ripoff, or the ref blew a call, or Fighter X (let’s call him ‘Georges’ for the sake of argument) was cheating.

I’m not ready to pass judgment on whether or not GSP was getting ready to bake brownies on his back. What I will say is that the Penn camp has every right to file a formal complaint if they feel the incident could have influenced "The Prodigy’s" ability to work off his back.

Reports are surfacing that Penn will file a complaint. Others say he may not file a complaint and is mulling retirement. Whatever Penn decides to do is of course up to him, but keep in mind this was a devastating loss for him personally.

I gather from what we’ve seen thus far from Penn is that he’s a proud man. He wants to win and he wants to be the best. Getting smashed in front of millions of fans, his family, and more media than we’ve ever seen has to be a mighty blow to his self-esteem.

I’m hoping that my fellow fans and journalists will ease off the lightweight champ because these are very fresh wounds. He may say or feel things now that will pass after the sting of defeat wears off. He’s made a name for himself in this sport as a lightweight, and I think he has some unfinished business in that division.

I believe that in time he will realize that as well, and we can start to enjoy a very entertaining run at 155 for the duration of his career. How long that may be is unknown for now, but I for one am hoping (and expecting) to see him answering the call of KenFlo before the year is over.

As for ‘Greasegate,’ well I’m afraid we’re going to be beating that dead horse until it becomes glue. After all, arguing until the point of fisticuffs is every MMA fans God-given right.

UFC Quick Quote: Patient Lyoto Machida gunning for Rashad Evans

Posted: 02 Feb 2009 11:24 AM CST

"Thiago (Silva) is a great fighter, tough, was undefeated too, but my game was really well planned. We knew how he'd come and that was the result of our training. [Next] I'd like to fight with Rashad, but if it's not possible I don't pick another opponent. I'll fight whoever comes. I might think (that I deserve a titleshot), but Dana is our boss and I'll do whatever he says. It's good for me because, when I get where I want, I'll really deserve it".

– Undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida talks to Tatame.com about his knockout win over previously undefeated master of carnage Thiago Silva at UFC 94 ‘St. Pierre vs. Penn 2′ last Saturday night. “The Dragon” has six straight wins inside the Octagon and continues to improve with each performance. A title shot against Evans seemed likely, however UFC President Dana White has indicated that the winner of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine at UFC 96 will likely get the first crack at “Sugar.” Is Machida getting overlooked for his methodical style, or does Jackson vs. Jardine produce the true number one contender? What say you?

UFC 97 ‘Silva vs Leites’ made official for Montreal on April 18

Posted: 02 Feb 2009 10:58 AM CST

Anderson Silva (23-4) will put his 185-pound title on the line against Thales Leites (14-1) at UFC 97 at The Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18, the UFC announced yesterday.

Silva and Leites were first rumored to be headlining UFC 95 from The O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21 until the "Spider" informed the UFC brass he would not be ready in time.

Fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Leites has rattled off five straight wins inside that Octagon. And that includes a slick rear naked choke over the hard-hitting Drew McFedries at UFC 90 on October 25.

Leites recently made headlines with a controversial split decision win over perennial contender, Nathan Marquardt, at UFC 85: "Bedlam" back in June. His only career loss is to Martin Kampmann in his promotional debut way back in 2006.

He's going to have to find a way to pull off what seems to be an impossible mission in overcoming the champ.

Silva is on an absolute tear … and a devastating one at that. He is on an nine-fight win streak, eight of which have come under the UFC banner. And none of those fights have gone past the second round — with the exception of his bizarre match against Patrick Cote at UFC 90 that ended with Cote’s knee imploding.

In the co-main event, Mauricio Rua, fresh off his less-than-thrilling victory over Mark "The Hammer" Coleman at UFC 93: 'Franklin vs. Henderson,' will challenge former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell.

Hopefully the former Chute Boxe prodigy will be out for redemption for his disappointing performance against Coleman, as well as for his stinker against Griffin. For a man with his talent, Shogun's time in the UFC thus far has been quite underwhelming, and left a lot of Rua fans scratching their heads.

“The Iceman” defeated Wanderlei Silva in a thrilling three-round war back at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007. However, he could not capitalize on the momentum and was most recently on the wrong end of a vicious knockout at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" courtesy of Rashad Evans.

At this point, every fight for Liddell could be a dangerous one for his career — the Icy one has lost three of his last four fights and he's no longer the same fighter who dominated the division for two years up until 2007.

This could be make or break for the former champ.

Here is the current fight card for UFC 97: Silva vs. Leites:

Main event:

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva (23-4) vs. Thales Leites (14-1)

Main card (Televised):

205 lbs.: Chuck Liddell (21-6) vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (17-3)
205 lbs.: Luis Cane (9-1) vs. Steve Cantwell (7-1)*
185 lbs.: David Loiseau (18-8) vs. Ed Herman (14-7)*
205 lbs.: Brian Stann (6-1) vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (16-8-1)*

Under card:

185 lbs.: Jason MacDonald vs. Nate Quarry (10-3)*
170 lbs.: Ryo Chonan (16-8) vs. TJ Grant (13-2)*
170 lbs.: Jonathan Goulet (22-10) vs. Tamdan McCrory (10-2)*
155 lbs.: Matt Wiman (10-4) vs. Sam Stout (13-5-1)*
155 lbs.: Mark Bocek (6-2) vs. David Bielkheden (13-6)*

Tickets for UFC 97 — the sophomore effort for the promotion north of the United States border — will go on sale to the general public on Feb. 14.

However, UFC Fight Club members and UFC Newsletter subscribers will more than likely be able to scoop up tickets prior to them being available for public consumption. That's important to consider because UFC 83: "St. Pierre vs. Serra" back in 2008 was the fastest sellout ever for the organization.

In fact, only a handful of tickets made it out to the public — the majority of them were gobbled up in the presales. So be sure to get 'em as soon as you can.
