MFC 20: ‘Destined for Greatness’ fight card announced for Feb. 20

Posted: 09 Feb 2009 06:34 AM CST

The Maximum Fighting Championship, one of the elite mixed martial arts organizations in North America, is excited to announce its full card for MFC 20: Destined for Greatness which will take place on Friday, February 20 at the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

MFC 20 will be broadcast live throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico on Mark Cuban’s HDNet Fights.

“This is unquestionably the best show we’ve ever put together,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “I wanted to start 2009 with a bang that the whole world would notice and that has been accomplished in a big way.”

In the main event MFC welterweight champion Pat “Bam Bam” Healy (24-14) will make the first defense of his belt against the man he beat for the title Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (8-1). The rematch is certain to be as electrifying as the first encounter at MFC 17 when Healy submitted Ford in the third round despite being battered throughout the first two rounds. The loss was the first and only setback of Ford’s blossoming career and he badly wants revenge while Healy is determined to show he is the better man by remaining the champ.

For the first time ever, the MFC will put is lightweight title up for grabs as well when Derrick “The Eraser” Noble (24-11) clashes with well-schooled veteran Antonio “Mandingo” McKee (27-3). Noble made a splash in his MFC debut when he defeated Ariel Sexton at MFC 19 while McKee brings a stellar 11-fight undefeated streak into the matchup.

“Derrick Noble is a terrific fighter who is a complete package,” noted Pavelich. “But the new and improved Antonio McKee should be extremely dangerous. If it’s possible for a title fight to be a showstealer, this is it.”

At Destined for Greatness, the MFC will continue its mission to showcase a superfight of international intrigue. There could be no better way to do that than by bringing back devastating welterweight Paul “Semtex” Daley who made an incredible impact at MFC 19 when he knocked out John Alessio. This time around, Daley (19-7) will go head-to-head against another star 170-pounder as he faces Nick “The Goat” Thompson (36-10) who has won 12 of his last 13 fights.

The remainder of the televised card features some major names in the world of MMA as well. The MFC re-ignites its middleweight division with a pair of top-notch battles. Power-packed Bryan “The Beast” Baker (8-1) joins the MFC ranks as he faces Rory Singer (11-8), a member of Team Ortiz from The Ultimate Fighter reality show. Singer’s former Ultimate Fighter rival Solomon Hutcherson (10-5) also steps into the MFC spotlight as he faces undefeated newcomer Dave Mewborn (7-0).

And in a much-anticipated light heavyweight tilt, former MFC champ Roger “The Hulk” Hollett (8-2) looks to get back on track as he squares off against David Heath (9-4). Both fighters are coming off losses to new MFC light heavyweight champion Emanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton so it is vital that both return to winning ways to stay in the title picture.

Undercard and prelims set

A strong contingent of up-and-coming fighters will get an opportunity to shine in the early bouts of MFC 20. Amongst those encounters is a meeting between two of the MFC’s top young lightweights as Simon Marini (6-1) takes on Ryan Machan (9-2). The winner of the matchup will certainly move into the upper echelon of the MFC’s 155-pound division.

Other undercard/prelim bouts include:

Donovan Foley (6-2) vs. Josh Russell (2-0), lightweight
Kyle Dietz (13-0) vs. Evan Sanguin (7-2), featherweight
Richard Symonds (1-0) vs. Brad Zazulak (3-0), light heavyweight
Jason Heit (2-0) vs. TBA

Shane Roller vs Ben Henderson WEC 40 fight in the works for April 5

Posted: 09 Feb 2009 06:34 AM CST

A lightweight match-up between Shane Roller (5-1) and Ben “Smooth” Henderson (7-1) is possible to go down at WEC 40: “Torres vs. Bowles,” which takes place in Chicago, Ill., on April 5.

Roller was a three-time All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He now trains mixed martial arts full time with former collegiate teammates Jake Rosholt and Johny Hendricks at Team Takedown in Texas.

He lost his pro debut after a tough third round technical knockout at the hands of Jake Pruitt in September 2007; however, Roller has won five straight bouts since then, finishing each of his opponents in the first round (three technical knockouts and two submissions).

Roller’s last two fights have both been submission wins under the WEC banner. He won with a guillotine choke over Todd Moore at WEC 35 last August and then tapped out the former “X Games” star and one-time number one ranked inline skater in the world, Mike Budnik, at WEC 37 in December.

Henderson made his promotional debut on the WEC 38 card a little more than a week ago, filling in as a substitute for the injured Ed “9mm” Ratcliff. Despite his status as a late replacement, he came through with an impressive performance and left with a second round submission win.

He’s put together seven straight wins, including a hard fought unanimous decision over UFC veteran Diego Saraiva last October. Six of his eight career wins have been by submission.

Hometown native Miguel Torres will defend his 135-pound title in the main event of WEC 40 against number one contender Brian Bowles. Jeff Curran will make his bantamweight debut as well on the main card against Joseph Benavidez in a number one contender eliminator match.

UFC Quick Quote: Anthony Johnson not ready for Georges St. Pierre … yet

Posted: 08 Feb 2009 08:33 PM CST

“I’m not ready for GSP yet. His level is so much higher than mine. And I’m smart enough to realize that. GSP was at my level some point. I want to get to the level that he’s at now and it takes time…. I just gotta keep improving until I know that if I end up in a certain situations I know that I can feel comfortable.”

– Anthony Johnson — winner of four of six inside the Octagon — tells Steve Cofield that he still needs work to compete with the best in the world at 170-pounds, UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. “Rumble” is fresh of a technical knockout of Luigi Fioravanti at UFC Fight Night 17: “Lauzon vs. Stephens” in Tampa, Fla., last night. The 24-year-old Atlanta, Ga., native has a ton of buzz because of his size, power and fight-finishing ability. He appears to get better each time out, training with Strikeforce champions Cung Le and Josh Thompson, among others, between fights. His potential — and future — are vast. There’s a long and exciting road to the top … and he knows it. It will be fun to watch him work his way through a very crowded division in the meantime.

Scott Smith vs Benji Radach Strikeforce fight in the works for April 11

Posted: 08 Feb 2009 07:53 PM CST

Former Elite XC fighters and new Strikeforce acquisitions Scott Smith (14-5) and Benji Radach (19-4) are penciled in to face off in a middleweight bout at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, Calif., on April 11.

While both of these fighters were caught up in the Pro Elite fighter contract fiasco that kept many talented mixed martial artists on the shelf for the last four months or so, Smith still managed to get himself a fight against fellow UFC veteran Terry Martin on the last Strikeforce card of 2008 back in November.

“Hands of Steel” lived up to his nickname on that night by knocking out the hard hitting Martin less than 30 seconds into the first round. Before that impressive showing, Smith had competed three times in 2008 under the Elite XC banner.

In February, he defeated Australian product Kyle Noke at “Street Certified” by knockout in the second round.

That win earned him a shot at division title holder “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler on the promotion’s first nationally televised CBS event in May. It stole the show in Newark, N.J., as the two 185-pound sluggers went back and forth for nearly three rounds before an inadvertent poke to the eye from Lawler caused a premature stop to the title fight.

The promotion ordered an immediate rematch, and the two went at it again two months later at “Unfinished Business” in Stockton, California. This time, however, Smith was handed the fifth loss of his career by second round technical knockout.

He’ll face another accomplished competitor in Benji Radach at 185 pounds on April 11.

“Razor” was last seen making his Elite XC debut an impressive one with a second round technical knockout win over former division champion Murilo “Ninja” Rua in October.

Before joining the Pro Elite roster in 2008, Radach competed six times under the International Fight League (IFL) banner. After winning his first five fights for the promotion, he earned himself a spot in the World Grand Prix Finals in December of 2007 against Matt Horwich. He came up on the short end of the stick in that contest, which is the lone blemish on his record over his last seven fights.

Radach also has some Octagon experience to his credit, too. In 2002, he competed three times in the UFC, putting together an even record (1-1-1) against Steve Berger (No Contest), Nick Serra (win) and Sean Sherk (loss).

Strikeforce did a nice job with this match-up and apparently is going to get right to it with putting its new Pro Elite acquisitions to work. This organization is clearly looking to make big waves in 2009, and with this being the kick off event for the new year, it seems safe to assume there are plenty more quality fight announcements coming for April 11.

Josh Neer is ‘going to bring it win, lose or draw’

Posted: 08 Feb 2009 09:56 AM CST

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

“I had nothing to lose. I was going to go in there and bang it out. I was going to go through whatever I had to go through [to get the win]…. I knew that I had more heart than him…. Win, lose or draw I’m going to bring it. Anybody that faces me they’re going to have to deal with that — they’re going to have to deal with someone who isn’t going to lay down. I’m not going to be a stepping stone for anybody.”

Josh Neer reflects on his gutty and hard-fought win over Mac Danzig at UFC Fight Night 17: “Lauzon vs. Stephens” last night at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. The toothless “Dentist” walked through punches and delivered some of his own to put on another exciting performance. In fact, it earned him and Danzig “Fight of the Night” honors and $30,000 each in extra bonus money. It was the second straight such award for Neer — he and Nate Diaz put on a three-round thriller back in December. Who would you like to see him take on next? Tell us in the comments section below.
