MFC 20 weigh in results; Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley fails to make weight (again)

Posted: 20 Feb 2009 08:04 AM CST

Electric welterweight Paul "Semtex" Daley last night failed to make weight for his fight against Nick "The Goat" Thompson at Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) 20: "Destined for Greatness," coming in a half-pound over the 170-pound division limit.

It is the second time in as many fights that the English striker has had trouble on the scale — he came in a whopping four pounds heavy for his bout against John Alessio in December 2008, which he won via technical knockout.

The fight will go on as planned; however, Daley will forfeit 25 percent of his fight purse to Thompson for the slip.

Here are the complete "Destined for Greatness" weigh-in results (via Sherdog.com):

Ryan Ford (171) vs. Pat Healy (169)
Antonio McKee (155) vs. Derrick Noble (155)
Paul Daley (171.5) vs. Nick Thompson (170)
Rory Singer (185.5) vs. Bryan Baker (182)
Roger Hollett (204) vs. David Heath (204)
Solomon Hutcherson (185.5) vs. David Mewborn (185)
Simon Marini (155) vs. Ryan Machan (155)
Alain Hernandez (155) vs. Evan Sanguin (153)
Donovan Foley (151) vs. Josh Russell (151)
Richard Symons (200) vs. Brad Zazulak (197)

Note fighters are allowed a one-pound allowance over the division limit.

In addition to the great match up between Daley and Thompson, two MFC titles will be on the line this evening. MFC welterweight champion Pat "Bam Bam" Healy will defend his title against Ryan "The Real Deal" Ford and lightweight champ Derrick Noble will defend his belt against Antonio McKee.

MFC 20 will air live on HDNet later tonight (Friday, Feb. 20) at 10 p.m. ET from the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

UFC Quick Quote: Randy Couture vs. Mirko Cro Cop in Germany a ‘possibility’

Posted: 19 Feb 2009 07:23 PM CST

“Possibility. I’m working on a movie this March, April and May. It depends when I finish the movie. If I can get a full camp in before the Germany [show] I’d love to fight Cro Cop. He’s a huge star in Germany. But the question is whether I’ll be able to get a full camp in.”

– Former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture tells MMAFix.com that he is interested in a fight against Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic when the promotion storms the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13. However, “The Natural” warns that he may not have enough time to prepare because he will be on a movie set alongside action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action flick “The Expendables.” The timeline appears tight and it’s unclear at this time when Couture would be obligated to make a decision so that the organization would have ample time to promote the match up. What’s more, the second tour of duty for Filipovic — the Pride FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix winner Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (24-6-2) — is not even a done deal right now. The Croatian is also recovering from knee surgery following his technical knockout win over Hong Man Choi at Field's Dynamite!! on New Year's Eve. In short, the fight seems unlikely for June based on current circumstances, but that could change as the event approaches.

FEG announces fight match-ups for 2009 DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix

Posted: 19 Feb 2009 05:02 PM CST

Japan's Fighting & Entertainment Group (FEG) today announced the fight match-ups for the 2009 DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix that will commence at DREAM 7 on March 8 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

DREAM's featherweight class will be held at 63 kilograms (139 lbs.), considerably different to what has come to be the norm in the U.S. (145lbs).

Conspicuously absent from the first round is featherweight superstar Norifumi Yamamoto . "Kid" was offered a bye into the second round of the tournament at DREAM 9 in May in hopes that he will have recovered from a previous injury in time to compete.

Yamamoto (17-1) is in the midst of a 14-fight win streak, but has been plagued with injuries that have kept him on the sidelines since demolishing Rani Yahya at K-1 Premium Dynamite in December 2007.

He was expected to make his DREAM debut last July to face undefeated featherweight prospect Joseph Benavidez at DREAM 5. However three days before the fight while in training he attempted a flying knee maneuver and landed awkwardly on his right leg. This resulted in a partial tear of his anterior ligament that has kept him out of action ever since.

With the opening round not being completed until DREAM 8 on April 5, 'Kid' will have a considerable amount of time to prepare should he follow through with his commitment.

Then again, seeing him rub elbows with the WEC elite during one of Dana White's previous video blogs can't give DREAM event producer Keiichi Sasahara that warm, fuzzy feeling.

Also joining him in the virtual infirmary is Pancrase veteran Daika Hata (9-5-3). “DJ.taiki” is recovering from a recent eye injury and will complete the first round of the GP against Hideo Tokoro (21-15-1) at DREAM 8 on April 5.

Here is the complete line-up for the first round of the 2009 DREAM Featherwight Grand Prix:
DREAM 7:

Masakazu Imanari (15-6-1) vs. Atsushi Yamamoto (12-5-1)
Hiroyuki Takaya (9-6-1) vs. Jong Won Kim (0-0)
Yoshiro Maeda (23-6-2) vs. Micah Miller (10-2)
Chase Beebe (11-3) vs. Joe Warren (0-0)
Bibiano Fernandes (3-2) vs. Takafumi Otsuka (8-3-1)
Abel Cullum (13-2) vs. Akiyo Nishiura (9-3-1)

DREAM 8:

Daika Hata (9-5-3) vs. Hideo Tokoro (21-15-1)

Both events will be broadcasted live in North America courtesy of HDNet. For the entire DREAM archive click here.

Ring of Combat 23 to feature two championship title fights

Posted: 19 Feb 2009 11:31 AM CST

Ring of Combat (ROC), one of Atlantic City's longest running sporting events, will hold its “ROC XXIII” event this Friday, February 20, at 8:30 pm ET and streamed live on GoFightLive.tv from the Tropicana Casino & Resort in Atlantic City, NJ.

ROC XXIII will be headlined by undefeated Bret Kohan (3-0-0) as he faces off against current champion Joe "Apocalypse" Abouata (4-1-0) for the ROC heavyweight title.

Kohan scored a stunning knockout victory over Fernando Rivera last June at Ring of Combat 20 and has emerged from Ricardo Almeida's camp as one of the heaviest hitters around. As versatile as he is heavy handed, Kohan has kept his opponents on the lookout for both knockouts and submissions.

Abouata, fighting on behalf of Alex Wilkie's Warriors, will be making his second defense of the ROC Heavyweight crown. Abouata finished his last two fights via rear naked choke, and is also dangerous on his feet with two brutal TKO wins to his credit.

In the evening’s co-main event, Alexandre Moreno (6-1-0) battles Rafael “Sapo” Natal(4-1-0) to determine the new ROC middleweight champion.

Coming out of Marco Alvan's Team Link and being a teammate of UFC heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga, Moreno has gained a reputation as a submission expert, scoring all six of his professional victories by way of tapout.

Moreno faces another submission expert in Natal. Like Bret Kohan, Sapo is a product of Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Ricardo Almeida owns multiple submission victories. This one is going to come down to which fighter is better able to impose their will on the ground.

Here is the scheduled fight card for ROC XXIII:

Chris Weidman vs. Anthony Dick
Jeff Lentz vs. Jerome “Jay” Isip
Roger Mamedov vs. Jeff Pender
James Faleris vs. Gian Villante
Bret Kohan vs. Joe “Apocalypse” Abouata
Brendan Barrett vs. Ricardo Romero
Rafael “Sapo” Natal vs. Alexandre Moreno
Tuan “Kid Thunder” Pham vs. Nick Pace
Greg Soto vs. Shawn Foreman
Al Iaquinta vs. Oscar Arizmendi
Jimmie Rivera vs. Tyler Venice
Anthony Abatelli vs. Garrett Carmody
Aaron Meisner vs. Costa Phillipou

Ring of Combat is Atlantic City's longest running mixed martial arts promotion, and has proven to be a breeding ground for fighters of the next generation. Top fighters who began their careers with Ring of Combat include Matt Serra, Frank Edgar, Josh Kosheck, Kurt Pellegrino, and Phil Baroni.

Jon ‘Bones’ Jones: It’s not who you know, it’s how hard you work

Posted: 19 Feb 2009 10:22 AM CST

I kind of had the impression they gave Stephan (Bonnar) the fight against me to give him a good comeback fight, fighting a guy who’s inexperienced. I didn’t want to be anyone’s stepping stone so I decided to reach out and grab this opportunity and make Stephan Bonnar my stepping stone … I knew beating Stephan would be gigantic for me. I believe you really don’t need the biggest name coaches to be successful in your career. I’m out here in a little small town in upstate New York, there is no one on my coaching staff you’ve ever heard of, but we know how to work hard and we know how to push ourselves. We proved it. You don’t need the big names to be successful.

Electrifying light heavyweight prospect Jon Jones talks to host Larry Pepe on MMAmania.com's exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio regarding his impressive win over Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94 “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ on January 31. The national Junior College Champion out of Iowa Central Community College dropped out of school to pursue a career in mixed martial arts and is dispelling the myth that you have to align yourself with one of the big name training camps in order to be successful in MMA. It’s hard to argue with a guy who continues to consistently perform at his level at just 21 years of age.
