UFC Quick Quote: Paul Kelly is going to go crazy on Troy Mandaloniz for as long as he can

Posted: 18 Feb 2009 07:41 AM CST

“Troy just loves life too much. I’m not saying he’s not tough and strong, but technically he is no genius on the ground and fitness wise, he is not even in the same league as me. It has been 18 months since his last fight; that’s a long time for any fighter, never mind one who perhaps doesn’t train as hard as he should. I have heard that he put a lot of weight on and spent a lot of time chilling on the beach…. I know he trains with BJ Penn, but his jiu-jitsu is nowhere near black-belt level. I am better than him in every single area of this fight…. I don’t care about submissions. If I see the chance for an arm-bar or a rear naked choke, I am going to let it pass. It’s not that I don’t care about my submissions, but I feel like I have to redeem myself after my last fight…. The UFC is the holy grail of MMA and it needs exciting fighters, nothing else: fighters who leave all they have in the ring and go crazy for as long as they can…. Troy is going to have the worst night of his life because this fight means more to me than any other.”

– Welterweight Paul Kelly is holding down his own blog at UK.EuroSport.Yahoo.com as he prepares to take on Troy Mandaloniz at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” from The O2 Arena on London, England, on Feb. 21. “Tellys” reveals that he has a new baby for which he needs to provide, as well as some pent up anger after his most recent loss to Marcus Davis, which he plans to take out on the Hawaiian. His goal is to put on a show for the fans … even if it means he passes up a fight-ending submission. Hopefully, in his zeal to put on a memorable performance Kelly doesn’t miss out on a win bonus. Memories don’t buy diapers … at least in the short term.

Jake Shields set to do battle against Joe Riggs at upcoming Strikeforce event on April 11

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 10:52 PM CST

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm that former EliteXC Welterweight Champion Jake Shields (22-4–1) will take on UFC and Strikeforce veteran Joe Riggs (29-10) on the main card of the new-look Strikeforce debut show on April 11 in San Jose, California.

Shields -– widely regarded as the top welterweight in the world not fighting in the UFC -– recently finished Cage Rage Welterweight Champion Paul "Semtex" Daley at Elite XC: "Heat" on CBS “Saturday Night Fights” last October.

The Cesar Gracie-trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu standout is on a blistering 11-fight win streak, racking up impressive wins against top-level talent such as Mike Pyle, Renato Verissimo, Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit and others.

Perhaps most impressive is that he's been able to improve fight after fight, finishing his last seven opponents –- something that was a knock on him midway through in his blossoming career.

For "Diesel" this will be his fifth fight for Strikeforce and his seventh since leaving the UFC following a knockout loss to Diego Sanchez in December of 2006. He’s currently back in the win column after smashing fast rising jiu-jitsu stud Luke Stewart at Strikeforce “Destruction” last November.

Riggs has been plagued by injuries and other issues outside the cage throughout his career and after a stint at middleweight, has returned once and for all to the welterweight division.

The talented 25-year-old Arizona native has had an up-and-down career and there's no doubt that a win over Shields would vault him back into contention.

The April 11 card will feature Nick Diaz and Frank Shamrock facing off in the evening’s main event at a catchweight of 179 pounds. Gilbert Melendez, Scott Smith and Benji Radach are all expected to be in action as well.

Head for the border: Zuffa aiming for UFC live events and programming in neighboring Mexico

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 07:24 PM CST

UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" is set to go down this Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21 in what is expected to be yet another success for the mixed martial arts promotion as it continues to expand overseas.

In addition to its exploits in Europe, Zuffa was wildly successful with its debut in Canada last year at the Montreal-held UFC 83 “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2.” Now they hope to replicate that success with UFC 97 “Redemption” — assuming the UFC brass can convince the Quebec Athletic Commission to lower their swords.

With that, the UFC has conquered two of the three major markets they set their sites on in early 2006. While events in Germany, Italy and Japan are all a part of the organization’s aggressive growth strategy, neighboring Mexico has somehow still eluded them.

Though that may be just a matter of time.

UFC President Dana White has recently returned from a trip to Mexico City in an effort to negotiate a television deal that would broadcast the country’s first-ever live UFC event according to the Las Vegas Sun.

While it’s never a good idea to spread the troops too thin, it’s hard to be critical of the UFC’s rapid expansion when it continues to produce record breaking numbers and global hype.

Think of La ConquĂȘte du Monde — only instead of having a little plastic cavalry plopped in front of your door, you get two guys kicking the crap out of each other inside a steel cage.

I don’t think there’s been a better time to capture the Hispanic market, specifically in Mexico, which already has a deep rooted interest in combat sports thanks to the rich history of Mexican boxers like Oscar De La Hoya and Julio Caesar Chavez.

The UFC can now capitalize on the popularity of MMA fighters of Mexican descent like Diego Sanchez, Leonard Garcia and Miguel Torres, who are steadily becoming household names south of the border.

In addition, they can ride some of the free publicity that Bellator Fighting Championships will generate when the promotion debuts on ESPN Deportes later this Spring.

The Ultimate Fighter reality show is currently a hot ticket in Mexico courtesy of DirecTV, and I’m sure Zuffa knows that it’s important to strike while the iron is hot, hence the recent trip to Cuidad des los Palacios.

Whether or not the UFC is able to hold a live event in Mexico in 2009 remains to be seen — though it does look promising. If they can, I’m wondering how quickly “El Matador” will reconsider his early retirement.

Octagon veteran Josh ‘The Dentist’ Neer extracts new four-fight contract from UFC

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 04:17 PM CST

After a gutty and hard-fought win over Mac Danzig at UFC Fight Night 17: "Lauzon vs. Stephens" earlier this month, 25-year-old mixed martial arts veteran Josh Neer has inked a contract extension that will keep the lightweight dynamo with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for an additional four fights.

Since posting a 2-3 record in the UFC, “The Dentist” won six of seven fights outside the promotion before returning to the Octagon and defeating Din Thomas by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 13. He followed that up with a split decision loss to Nate Diaz, but not before earning "Fight of the Night" in their three-round war at UFC Fight Night 15 back in September.

Neer, who promises “Win, lose or draw I'm going to bring it,” would go on to nab his second straight "Fight of the Night" against Danzig, which no doubt prompted the UFC to hold on to the gritty warrior for his efforts inside the cage and his ability to electrify the crowd with his aggressiveness.

There was some initial concern about Neer’s future inside the Octagon after being arrested last month in Des Moines, Iowa, under suspicion of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), following a New Year's Eve celebration.

Neer was also charged with eluding police and hit and run — he was accused of attempting to flee the scene of a two-car accident that he caused and leading local authorities on a 20 minute traffic chase.

Despite the charges, Neer promised the incident wouldn’t affect his performance at Fight Night 17 … and boy did he deliver. Now with the prospect of him fighting in a very deep and talented lightweight division, the fantasy match-ups can officially begin.

Special thanks to Chief Executive Officer of K.O. Dynasty Sports Management Mickey Dubberly for passing along the good news.

UWC 5: ‘Man ‘O’ War’ on tap this weekend in Fairfax, Va.

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 02:54 PM CST

Washington D.C.-based mixed martial arts promotion Ultimate Warrior Challenge (UWC) will pull the trigger on its fifth offering dubbed, “Man ‘O’ War,” at the George Mason University Patriot Center Arena in Fairfax, Va., this Saturday night (Feb. 21).

Headlining the event will be former two-time WEC bantamweight champion Chase “The Rage” Beebe taking on top ranked UWC fighter Mike "The Hulk" Easton for the vacant UWC 135-pound title. Beebe will be cornered by Marc Fiore, Robbie Lawler and Matt Hughes from Hughes’ HIT Squad, while Easton’s side will comprise well respected Brazilian jiu-jitsu trainer Lloyd Irvin and UFC light heavyweight Brandon Vera.

The promotion has dubbed the match up, “the biggest MMA title fight in the nation’s capital’s history.”

In the co-main event features a sensational showdown between light heavyweights Antwain “The Juggernaut” Britt and Jamal “The Suit” Patterson. Britt won a spot on “The Ultimate Fighter” (TUF) 8, but was forced to withdraw after a preliminary win because of a broken hand. Patterson is a six-fight veteran of the now defunct International Fight League (IFL).

In addition, TUF season 6 alum Richie “The Dirty Samurai” Hightower, TapouT season 2-featured fighter John “The Magician” Dodson, ex-Green Bay Packers running back Whisper “The Gorilla” Goodman and the winner of the Fight Girls TV show Felice “Lil Bulldog” Herrig will all be in action on the card as well.

It’s shaped up to be a very good show. Here’s the full lineup for UWC 5:

135 lbs.: Chase “The Rage” Beebe (11-3) vs. Mike "The Hulk" Easton (6-1)
205 lbs.: Antwain “The Juggernaut” Britt (8-1) vs. Jamal “The Suit” Patterson (4-2)
125 lbs.: John "The Magician" Dodson (5-3) vs. Jose “The Pistol” Villarisco (0-0)
185 lbs.: Richie "The Dirty Samurai" Hightower (7-3) vs. Marcus Foran (6-2)
185 lbs.: Ron “The Choir Boy” Stallings (6-2-1) vs. Whisper “Gorilla” Goodman (8-4)
205 lbs.: Cody “Donnybrook” Donovan (3-1) vs. John Doyle (6-4)
120 lbs.: Felice “Lil Bulldog” Herrig (0-0) vs. Iman "Mannie" Achhal (0-0)
170 lbs.: Kyle “The Alleycat” Baker (6-3) vs. Levon “The Main Man” Maynard (5-3)
265 lbs.: Brendan Schaub (2-0) vs. Dave Brytus (0-0)
185 lbs.: Kris “Savage” McCray (1-0) vs. Manny “Postura” Okorie (0-0)

Tickets for the event can still be had through Ticketmaster.com. The action will also be streamed live for free on Sherdog.com on fight night.

UFC 94 gate and attendance figures released from NSAC

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 12:31 PM CST

UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2," which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 31 sold 13,622 tickets for an official live gate $4,290,020, according to The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Complimentary tickets to the tune of 1,263 pushed attendance near the 15,000 mark, which would place it third all-time for the promotion behind UFC 83: "St. Pierre vs. Serra 2" back in April 2008 (21,390) and UFC 68: “The Uprising” in March 2007 (19,079).

In terms of revenue at the turn stiles, the "fight of a lifetime" between the two champions placed sixth — UFC 66, UFC 83, UFC 79, UFC 91 and UFC 71 all fared better at their respective gates.

St. Pierre defeated Penn via fourth round technical knockout to retain his 170-pound crown in the UFC 94 main event. Machida took one giant step toward earning a 205-pound title shot in the very near future, blasting the previously undefeated Thiago Silva with a thundering first round knockout punch.

UFC dished out $1.1 million in fighter salaries for the pay-per-view (PPV) event and another $325,000 in additional bonus money for five participants who delivered outstanding performances.
