Brian Cobb vs Terry Etim at UFC 95 with Justin Buchholz scratched

Posted: 13 Feb 2009 08:10 AM CST

Palace Fighting Championships (PFC) Lightweight Champion Brian Cobb (15-4) will take on Terry Etim (11-2) in a 155-pound match up at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” at The O2 Arena in London, England, on Feb. 21, according to a Sherdog.com report.

Justin Buchholz was forced out of the contest on short notice for an undisclosed reason.

Cobb is on a nine-fight winning tear since mid 2007, defeating seven of those opponents via submission. The former wrestler from California State University (CSU) - Bakersfield upset UFC veteran Diego Saraiva via unanimous decision to become champion at PFC 8: “A Night of Champions” in May 2008.

“The Bandit” — who trains alongside former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber — was supposed to make his third title defense against former WEC number one welterweight contender Carlo Prater at PFC 13 on May 8 before getting called up to the big leagues.

Cobb will certainly be a tough test for the local favorite … especially on such short notice.

Etim scored a much-needed unanimous decision win over Sam Stout in his last appearance at UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben” back in October 2008. Prior to the victory, the British up-and-comer suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of super tough veterans Rich Clementi and Gleison Tibau.

He submitted Matt Grice with a guillotine choke in his Octagon debut at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” in April 2007.

UFC 95 features the lightweight debut of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) inaugural season winner Diego Sanchez against the man who took the crown the series after, Joe Stevenson. Two important middleweight weight match ups are also scheduled — Nate Marquardt will tangle with Wilson Gouveia and Demian Maia will collide with Chael Sonnen.

Lean and sober: How to get ripped without getting ripped off

Posted: 13 Feb 2009 06:10 AM CST

It’s Fitness Friday ladies and gentlemen, and on the eve of Valentine’s Day I bring you good cheer that doesn’t require getting an arrow shot into your buttocks by a naked putto.

Thanks to the huge response we received from our recent markdown on MMA Stack, Feel It! Nutrition is slashing prices yet again to help you get through another box of chocolate hearts and beyond.

Simply put, you're finally able to get ripped without getting ripped off.

Most mixed martial arts competitors start to drastically alter their diets before weigh-ins, torturing (and boring) themselves on the treadmill until the scale begins to drop.

Unfortunately a lot of their size and strength begins to drop as well.

Surprisingly enough, most athletes can eliminate the sweets and other forms of junk food from their diets without any problem. Where they run afoul however, is not knowing what to eat in its place (or when to eat it).

Proper nutrition is an integral part of any weight cutting program. This requires eating smaller meals more frequently and as we all know, trying to whip up a small meal at the office while the boss is riding your desk is no easy task.

What you eat and when you plan to eat it should be mapped out in advance. Take one day out of the week to do all your shopping for the entire week and stock up on items consistent with your fitness goals.

If you cook in large quantities, you only have to do it two or three times per week. Once you stuff a few days worth of meals into some Tupperware or Gladware, you can just wake up and take it on the go or have it ready for you when you come home at night.

Be sure to leave a protein bar or bag of organic granola plus a bottle of water in your car (weather permitting) for those days when you get stuck in the afternoon rush.

Now that you’ve got your ingredients, take the time to map out your eating plan for the following day. Below is a sample day for the typical weight cutting diet:

Breakfast
3/4 cup old-fashioned oatmeal with 1/8 cup raisins and a dash of cinnamon: 50g carbs
1 egg + 5 egg whites: 21g protein, 5g fat
1/2 grapefruit: 10g carbs

Mid-morning snack
Protein shake: 44g protein
Banana: 28g carbs

Lunch
1 piece of skinless and boneless chicken breast: 35-50g protein, 3-6g fat
1/2 cup brown rice: 23g carbs, 5g protein, 2g fat
1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese: 28g protein, 6 carbs, 2g fat

Mid-afternoon snack
Chef salad
1 cup romaine salad 2-4g carbs

Toppings For Romaine Salad
1 piece of skinless and boneless chicken breast (chopped up): 35-50g protein, 3-6g fat
1 hard boiled egg: 6g protein, 5g fat
1 tbsp sunflower seeds: 6g protein, 5g carbs, 16g fat
2 tbsp fat free zesty Italian dressing: 4g carbs, 0g fat

Post workout meal
Protein shake: 44g protein
Antioxidants 1000 mg Vitamin C, Vitamin E
Multivitamin
1 Banana: 28g carbs

Dinner
1 8 oz steak: 50g protein, 20g fat
1/2 cup green beans: 3g carbs, 1g protein
1 potato without skin: 35g carbs, 5g protein

Toppings For Potato
1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese: 28g protein, 6g carbs, 2g fat

Items can be substituted for preference and of course much depends on your personal goals, current weight, etc. Now that you have a basic blueprint for nutrition, it’s time to take your leaning out phase to the next level.

By starting Lean Stack about thirty days out from competition, you can say goodbye to the sauna, the crash dieting and the treadmill. By working with your body in conjunction with your training regimen and above nutritional blueprint, the stored fat cells get released in a safe and timely manner.

By the time weigh-ins roll around, you'll already be sitting pretty. So don't change the way you train, change the way you prepare. Let technology do the work for you.

Part of the appeal of Lean Stack is the fact that you can get everything in one shot without roaming around GNC like a bewildered tourist. The Feel It! Nutrition experts have already done the research and assembled the most comprehensive stack for burning fat and retaining lean muscle.

Lean Stack consists of the following cutting-edge supplements:

Strength Prohormone: LG Sciences Methyl Masterdrol V2 (90 Capsules)
Testosterone Booster: LG Sciences Formadrol Extreme (60 Capsules)
Protein Powder: BSN, Inc. Syntha-6 (2.91 lb tub)
Thermogenic: BSN, Inc. Atro-Phex (98 Capsules)
Antioxidant: TWINLAB Alpha Lipoic Acid (60 Capsules)

If you're looking to cut weight prior to competition without jeopardizing your strength and lean muscle, or if you just want to shed those few extra pounds that have survived your onslaught of physical exertion, give Lean Stack a try.

It could even affect the outcome of your next fight. Who has the advantage: The fighter doing a light workout the morning of the weigh-ins or the fighter who is shriveling up inside a sauna with just a prayer and a rubber suit?

Get lean. Get Lean Stack.

Don’t delay, this sale ends February 20.

UFC 97 Montreal in jeopardy due to potential rule changes by the Quebec Athletic Commission

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 07:07 PM CST

UFC 97 ‘Redemption,’ scheduled to take place from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18 is in jeopardy of being canceled by potential rule changes from the Quebec Athletic Commission (QAC) according to Ontario’s Sportsnet.ca.

And as silly as it sounds, we may have James “Colossus” Thompson to blame.

On February 6 at Mel's Studio in Montreal, Quebec, Titans Fighting held an MMA event that was originally supposed to be called “Strikebox.” The upstart promotion wanted to stage an event that featured all striking, prohibiting any grappling or striking on the ground.

Unfortunately Strikebox struck out, as the California-based “Strikeforce” wasn’t too keen on the name similarity and forced them to become Titans Fighting.

Secondly, the QAC would not approve of the format because it did not follow the currently sanctioned rules. The deal was have a full-fledged MMA show, or have no show at all.

Titans Fighting continued with their show, but maintain the fighters had a ‘Gentleman’s agreement” to keep the action standing.

Apparently everyone was told about this agreement except Thompson. Or if he was told, his corpulent ears might have prevented him from hearing it.

In the main event against Steve Bosse, Thompson immediately went for the takedown and rattled off some textbook ground and pound. The crowd reacted violently in disapproval, showering the cage with bottles and debris. The show was halted and both fighters and Referee Yves Lavigne ran for their lives.

In the aftermath of that disastrous event, the QAC is re-evaluating rules that govern the sport of mixed martial arts within the province and are considering changes that include a smaller cage, banning elbow and knee strikes and requiring a referee to stop a bout when a fighter gets knocked down to make sure they are okay to continue.

The QAC further stated that the UFC will be forced to comply with any proposed changes should they desire to stage an event there, which comes as a surprise considering the success of UFC 83 that was held on April 19 of 2008.

Considering the province has been following North America’s Unified Rules of MMA for over seven years, this sudden development is a bit puzzling.

I’m sure the over 12,000 fans who already purchased their tickets aren’t going to take this lying down, nor will Marc Ratner, the UFC’s vice president of government and regulatory affairs.

UFC 97 is supposed to feature middleweight champion Anderson Silva, putting his 185-pound title on the line against number one division contender, Thales Leites. In the co-main event, Mauricio Rua — fresh off his less-than-thrilling victory over Mark "The Hammer" Coleman at UFC 93 — would challenge former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell.

If the QAC decides that new rules are going to be in affect, let’s hope for the sake of Canadian fans it can wait until April 19. Otherwise, the UFC may have to consider other options, including relocating the show elsewhere like Las Vegas.

Strikeforce acquires Pro Elite assets for a thrifty three million dollars

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 06:37 PM CST

Yesterday, the details of Strikeforce’s recent acquisition of certain Pro Elite assets was made public through a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to the report, the San Jose-based mixed martial arts promotion paid $3 million for the rights to the complete EliteXC video library, which includes a total of 20 live events put on by the company, as well as 42 of the 80 or so fighter contracts that were left over from the collapse of the company last October.

As part of the deal, Pro Elite will receive an undisclosed portion of the licensing fees Strikeforce will earn on account of its new deal with the premium cable network Showtime. Strikeforce struck a multi-year deal with Showtime Inc. last week that will have the promotion airing up to 16 live events this year.

Strikeforce will have to pay these fees to Pro Elite through February 28 of 2012, unless that time frame is extended.

What all this means for Pro Elite is that it will no longer be indebted to CBS or it’s affiliates, due to Strikeforce buying out the remainder of the debt. And according to Pro Elite CEO Chuck Champion, the organization is not done promoting MMA fights. Here’s a snip from an interview with Sports Illustrated via MMAWeeky.com:

“ProElite as a company will focus on those assets that are making money, which is principally King of the Cage. There are a few other issues outstanding that will need to be resolved… but there is capital in the bank in order to be able to do that. So, we’ll look for what we do next, now. But this basically takes the company and makes it debt free, dispute free, litigation free.”

All this seems like a solid deal for Strikeforce, as good a deal as possible for Pro Elite, and a great deal for the fans now that we’ll finally be able to see some of the world class fighters formerly on Pro Elite’s roster now competing for Strikeforce instead of sitting on the sidelines like they’ve been doing for the last four months or so.

Bring on April 11.

UFC Quick Quote: Antonio Nogueira would submit Randy Couture

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 02:04 PM CST

"Minotauro had a knee surgery and will be back to Brazil next weekend…He shouldn't have done this fight with Mir, his knee was going out all the time. He was supposed to fight Randy (Couture), but I don't know. They haven't confirmed it yet, and Couture also did a surgery in his elbow… But I prefer this fight, it'll be good to Rodrigo. They want this fight and I believe it won't be that difficult to Rodrigo. It's a tough fight, but I think Randy has no knockout power in his punch and, on the ground, Rodrigo will submit (him).”

-Luiz Alves, Muay Thai coach for former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira talks to Tatame.com about the potential showdown between “Minotauro” and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. “The Natural” has been offered a fight with Nog in the past, but declined in an attempt to battle WAMMA deity Fedor Emelianenko. Now with Couture coming off surgery and another movie role, UFC 99 could finally be the event that brings the former kings together.

DREAM 8: Shinya Aoki and Hayato Sakurai confirmed for 2009 Welterweight Grand Prix

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 01:29 PM CST

Japan's Fighting & Entertainment Group (FEG) today announced during a press conference that Japanese mainstay Hayato Sakurai (34-8-2) and lightweight superstar Shinya Aoki (19-3) are confirmed for the promotion’s upcoming Welterweight Grand Prix commencing at DREAM 8 on April 5 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Featuring only eight fighters across two events, the 2009 Grand Prix will conclude on July 20 at DREAM 10.

Headlining the event will be the first-ever World Alliance Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) lightweight champion Shinya Aoki, who is coming off a submission victory over Eddie Alvarez in the first round of their battle at Fields Dynamite!! on New Year’s Eve.

The two were on a collision course at last year’s Lightweight Grand Prix, until Alvarez got hurt and Aoki ran into finals alternate Joachim Hansen.

“Hellboy” would go on to upset the heavily-favored Aoki and bring home the belt.

The “Tobikan Judan” would rebound from that loss — just the third of his career — and submit Todd Moore via neck crank at DREAM 6 in September before finally getting a crack at Alvarez at year’s end.

Now the very dangerous submission fighter will pack on a few pounds and join Hayato Sakurai in a quest for welterweight supremacy.

“Mach” — who holds a unanimous decision win over Aoki from their days in Shooto — has gone up against some of the most talented fights in the sport, from lightweight all the way up to middleweight.

In addition to Aoki, he's competed against UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, Matt Hughes, Jake Shields, Joachim Hansen, Takanori Gomi, Frank Trigg, Jens Pulver and Caol Uno among countless others.

He’s an exciting fighter and a crowd favorite in Japan. Having him meet Aoki in the finals for a rematch would be the ideal ending.

Here’s to hoping.

Stay tuned for more additions to the DREAM 8 2009 Welterweight Grand Prix as they become available.

UFC Quick Quote: Chael Sonnen and Demian Maia are better than Anderson Silva

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 09:56 AM CST

“In my opinion, these are the two best guys fighting right now, me and Maia. I think whoever wins this fight is the best middleweight in the UFC. I think I’m better than Anderson and I think Demian’s better than Anderson; I think we would both beat him. For my money, this is the fight to figure out who’s the best. But who’s the best and who’s the champion are two different deals.”

– Chael Sonnen tells USA Today that he believes his opponent at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson,” Demian Maia, as well as himself, are the two top middleweights in the organization. It’s a rather bold statement, considering the world beater who currently reigns atop the division, Anderson Silva. Sonnen has won seven of his last eight matches since 2006. And he avenged that loss (Paulo Filho) in his most recent performance. Maia has never lost a fight in professional mixed martial arts competition. Meanwhile, Silva’s dominance kind of speaks for itself. He will defend his 185-pound title against Thales Leites at UFC 97 in April. After that, if Silva wins, we may find out if Sonnen’s assessment is accurate.

Jorge Rivera vs. Nissen Osterneck UFC Fight Night 18 bout confirmed

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 09:44 AM CST

Jorge Rivera (15-7) will return to the eight-sided cage for the first time in about 10 months when he takes on Octagon newcomer Nissen Osterneck at UFC Fight Night 18: "Condit vs. Kampmann" at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tenn., on April 1.

"El Conqistador" was supposed to compete sooner after a first round submission loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC 85: "Bedlam" back in June 2008; however, he was blindsided with the sudden and tragic death of his 17-year-old daughter.

Rivera — a UFC veteran who was also a former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 — notched a big knockout win over Kendall Grove at UFC 80: "Rapid Fire" earlier in 2008. He's also got a technical knockout win over Edwin DeWees and a knockout loss to Terry Martin since his most recent return to the organization.

It's safe to say that Rivera is consistently inconsistent — he has been unable to string together consecutive wins in eight attempts with the UFC. The good news for him is that he is trending (on paper) to win this next one against Osterneck.

Osterneck is an accomplished grappler, sporting a record of (64-4) on the jiu-jitsu circuit and holds a purple belt under the legendary Relson Gracie.

He's the Gracie Fighting Championships Evolution champion, the Fight Party Full Throttle 8 champion, the Gracie Proving Ground champion, the International Sport Combat Federation Invasion champion, the four-time South Carolina Grappling Champion, and the 2006 Gracie National Champion, during which he submitted 13 guys in one day to win the title.

In short, his jiu-jitsu is fantastic.

The submission specialist sustained the first loss of his professional mixed martial arts career in his last performance, which was against decorated collegiate wrestling phenom Jake Rosholt under the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) banner. Osterneck was clearly getting the better of the stand up exchanges; however, it appeared that he punched himself out and was out of gas in the second round. Rosholt capitalized and finished him via technical knockout.
