XCF ‘Rumble in Race Town’ quick results: Trigg victorious, Martin denied

Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:52 AM CST

Xtreme Cagefighting Federation (XCF) hosted its "Rumble in Race Town," event from the Daytona Beach Ocean Center on February 14.

In what may be his final fight at 185 lbs., former UFC welterweight contender Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg outlasted a very game Danny Babcock in the main event of the evening. Trigg got off to a rocky start in the first but soon found his range and took command in the second and third rounds including a late knockdown in the final minute of the bout to take the unanimous decision win.

UFC veteran Terry Martin was unable to throw hands against the surprisingly nimble Zak Cummings. The FM Productions standout stymied the hard-hitting Martin and nearly finished him in the second with a rear naked choke.

The judges awarded Cummings a split-decision win, probably due to a very close first round.

"The Ultimate Fighter" (TUF) reality show alumni Jesse Taylor was able to submit American Top Team representative Gert Kocani with a rear naked choke in the second round, his third straight since being booted from the UFC.

Joining him at the XCF event was fellow TUF 7 graduate Jeremy May, who (like his stint on the show) had very little to offer his opponent Todd Cutler, who quickly mounted the helpless May and pounded him into a TKO stoppage.

Also on the card was former NFL lineman Marcus Jones, who creamed John Juarez in the first round with a brutal two-punch combination to improve to 4-2.

A percentage of last night’s program will go towards the fund raiser for injured UFC fighter Corey Hill, who suffered a broken leg in his last match at UFC: "Fight For the Troops" back in December, effectively keeping him out of action for up to a year and a half.

Here are the XCF: "Rumble in Race Town" quick results:

Frank Trigg (19-6) defeated Danny Babcock (5-2) via unanimous decision
Zak Cummings (9-0) defeated Terry Martin (18-7) via split-decision
Jesse Taylor (9-3) defeated Steve Ramos (2-1) via submission (rear naked choke: R2)
Marcus Jones (4-2) defeated John Juarez (1-1) via TKO (strikes: R1)
Todd Cutler (4-0) defeated Jeremy May (5-6) via TKO (strikes: R1)
TJ Cook (9-3) defeated Scott Harper (9-6) via TKO (strikes: R1)
Gilbert Burgos (4-0) defeated Chris Thorne (1-2) via TKO (cut: R1)
Ryan Keenan (3-0) defeated Blake Bowman (2-2) via TKO (strikes: R1)

UFC 98: Patrick Barry vs Tim Hague

Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:03 AM CST

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm that Combat USA veteran Patrick Barry (4-0) will make his sophomore appearance inside the Octagon when he takes on massive King of the Cage heavyweight champion Tim Hague (9-1) at UFC 98 on May 23 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Get Hype” made his UFC debut last December at UFC 92 “Ultimate 2008″ where he peppered Dan Evensen into a TKO stoppage with brutal low kicks. The New Orleans native is undefeated in four chances ending all of his contests with first round (T)KO’s.

Barry is a decorated San Shou champion with experience in K-1 and the World Combat League.

He’s certainly going to have his hands full with the Canadian juggernaut. “The Thrashing Machine” has made a mockery of the King of the Cage heavyweight division, undefeated in nine contests with the promotion including seven stoppages.

His only defeat came in a close split-decision to grappling guru Miodrag Petkovic at Hardcore Championship Fighting “Destiny” in February of last year- a loss he later avenged at Raw Combat “Redemption” just nine months later.

UFC 98 features the final round of the mini heavyweight tournament between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir in the main event of the evening. The rest of the card is shaping up nicely, showcasing the grudge match between welterweight enemies and former champions, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, as well as an important lightweight clash between Sean Sherk and Frank Edgar.

MMA Quick Quote: Josh Thompson vs KJ Noons Strikeforce fight will not happen on April 11

Posted: 14 Feb 2009 09:08 PM CST

“Josh Thomson will fight (on April 11). We offered it to K.J. Noons, (but) it looks like that fight will not happen. K.J. is focusing on his boxing career, so he will not be available.”

– Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirms via MMAWeekly. com that company lightweight champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson will compete on the promotion’s first card on the premium cable network Showtime, which is set for the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on April 11. But he also confirms that the deal to put him in the cage opposite former Elite XC lightweight champion KJ Noons did not come to fruition. The Hawaiian native is focusing on boxing instead. Noons out-pointed Alejandro Bogarin (8-6-3) for a unanimous decision win in his return to the boxing on November 13 in El Monte, California. No opponent has been named to challenge Thomson at this time.

War Machine vs Guillaume de Lorenzi at XMMA on Feb. 27 with Phil Baroni out

Posted: 14 Feb 2009 09:03 PM CST

XMMA: “Inferno,” which is scheduled for the CEPSUM Amphitheater in Montreal, Canada, on Feb. 27 will have a new main event because Phil Baroni (13-10) had to withdraw from a welterweight showdown against undefeated prospect Guillaume de Lorenzi (5-0).

Filling in for the “New York Bad Ass” will be The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season six alum War Machine (6-2), formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver. War Machine has been in the headlines quite a few times over the past few months … and not necessarily for good reasons.

First came the name change in August 2008. Shorty thereafter he was released from his UFC contract for turning down a fight with the relatively unknown Brandon Wolff, as well as for some uninformed comments made about the death of Evan Tanner internet posting.

After the firing, he continued to blast the UFC via the Web.

Last week, War Machine was released from another contract — the ESPN-backed Bellator Fighting Championships — for mouthing off on the Internet again. This time it was about the President of the United States, Barack Obama.

War Machine did manage to squeeze in a fight on a Desert Rage promoted card in Arizona last November, knocking out David Anderson midway through the first round. He’ll get another chance with XMMA … at least for now.

Female Brazilian powerhouse Cristine “Cyborg” Santos has signed an exclusive four fight deal with Strikeforce and has been pulled from this card as well. She was set to face Marloes Coenen (16-2-0) at 145 pounds.

UFC Quick Quote: Demian Maia is not better than Anderson Silva …

Posted: 14 Feb 2009 12:57 PM CST

demian maia ufc 83

… but he thinks he can still beat him:

“I think my jiu jitsu would give me a very big advantage [against Anderson Silva}. Jiu jitsu is very effective in MMA and vale tudo. I have superior jiu jitsu and I think I would bring that to the fight. But Anderson is, to me, the best fighter in the world. He’s very well rounded, very complete, very hard to beat. He has more experience than I have. But I know I would like to challenge him. I can’t wait…. I don’t think [me and Chael Sonnen are] better than he is. I think we could win if we fight him but I don’t think I’m better than he is. I think he’s the best fighter in the world, but I think I could win if I fought him. I know the strongest part of my game is my jiu jitsu, so that’s how I could beat him. But it wouldn’t be easy. He’s the best fighter in the world.”

Undefeated middleweight contender Demain Maia provides MMAFanhouse.com with perhaps a more accurate assessment of his ability compared to current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Maia’s opponent at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson,” Chael Sonnen, remarked earlier this week that he and Maia were better than “The Spider.” You can check out the reaction to that confident statement right here. Maia feels he has the tools to beat Silva, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he is the “better” all around mixed martial artist.

Frank Trigg to headline ‘Rumble in Race Town’ tonight in Daytona

Posted: 14 Feb 2009 12:54 PM CST

Tonight, on the eve of the Super Bowl of NASCAR in Daytona Beach, Fla., Xtreme CageFighting Federation (XCF) will host an event of its own in the city of “the world’s most famous beach.” The event will be called “Rumble in Race Town,” taking place at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center.

Former UFC welterweight number one contender and ex-Icon Sport middleweight champion Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg will collide with Florida native Danny Babcock in the main event of the evening. Trigg will look for his fourth straight win since losing his Icon title to Robbie Lawler nearly two years ago.

Hard-hitting UFC veteran Terry Martin will clash heads with Zak Cummings in the co-featured fight of the night. Martin has dropped two of his last three fights, including a 24-second knockout loss to Scott Smith at the “Strikeforce at the Mansion II” event last November.

“The Ultimate Fighter” reality show alumni Jesse Taylor and Jeremy May will also be in action on the card, as well as former Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro defensive lineman Marcus Jones.

Fans can check out the action via a LIVE video stream on the XCF Web site (www.xcfmma.com). The cost to view the live event is just $9.95 and can be paid by credit card. A percentage of that fee will go toward raising money for injured UFC fighter Corey Hill and his family.

Hill suffered a gnarly broken leg in his last match at UFC: “Fight For the Troops” in December. He’ll be out of action for up to a year and a half. Here’s a snip from XCF founder Doug Bland on the fund raiser:

“Not only do we want everyone to have the opportunity of seeing this event live, more importantly, Xtreme Cagefighting Federation wants to help raise money for Corey Hill, by providing him a percentage of the streaming video proceeds.”

Here is the full lineup for XCF: “Rumble in Race Town:”

Frank Trigg (18-6) vs. Danny Babcock (5-1)
Terry Martin (18-6) vs. Zak Cummings (8-0)
Jesse Taylor (8-3) vs. Steve Ramos (2-0)
Marcus Jones (3-2) vs. John Juarez (1-0)
Branden Lee Hinkle (14-9) vs. Tom Sauer (22-12)
Jeremy May (5-5) vs. Todd Cutler (3-0)
TJ Cook (8-3) vs. Scott Harper (9-5)
Gilbert Burgos (3-0) vs. Chris Thorne (1-1)
Vagner Rocha (0-0) vs. Justin Flood (3-0)
Ryan Keenan (2-0) vs. Travis McGee (0-0)

It looks like a solid card. The first fight of the night will go down at 7:30 p.m. ET. and the doors open at 6:30.
