Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission approves MMA regulation that will take effect on Feb. 27

Posted: 23 Feb 2009 01:54 PM PST

You’ve got an opponent in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission (PSAC) today announced via press release the newly-approved regulations for the sport of mixed martial arts that will take effect on Feb. 27 of this year, according to York Blog’s MMA Explosion.

In July 2007, the PSAC voted to approve draft regulations that would allow MMA events to be held in Pennsylvania; however, those regulations were required to undergo extensive review in accordance with the Regulatory Review Act by various House and Senate Committees and the Office of the Attorney General, as well as the Independent Regulatory Review Commission.

Now with the regulations approved and set to take effect before the end of the month, Pennsylvania-born stars like Eddie Alvarez, Mac Danzig and Josh Koscheck can look forward to eventually competing on their home turf.

Here’s a snip:

The State Athletic Commission anticipates regulating four to five MMA events per month, which may generate as much as $80,000 per year in revenue for the commission. As a self-supporting entity, the State Athletic Commission receives no taxpayer dollars from the state’s General Fund. The commission and staff worked for more than a year to prepare the final regulations, which are commensurate with current boxing rules. Health and safety of the fighters and public protection are key themes of the regulations. Many facets of the sport were addressed, including age and medical requirements, fees, promoter activity, and ring requirements.

This is great news for East Coast fans of MMA.

Not only does it give MMA promoters an additional avenue for events, it could help put pressure on the squatters over in New York who keep pushing the MMA regulation bill to the bottom of the pile, especially if New Yorkers make a mass exodus to spend their money in Philadelphia should the UFC hold a major pay-per-view at an arena like the Wachovia Center.

WEC 39 weigh-in event details and information for ‘Brown vs Garcia’

Posted: 23 Feb 2009 01:01 PM PST

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) will hold its weigh-in and Q&A event for WEC 39: "Brown vs. Garcia" in the Bayview Ballroom of the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Saturday, Feb. 28, beginning at 9 a.m. CST.

Hosted by UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, the Q&A event for UFC Fight Club Members features WEC stars Brian Bowles and Urijah Faber. Immediately following that will be the WEC 39 weigh-ins that are free and open to the public.

Head on down, but be sure to get there early if you want a good seat.

On Sunday March 1, WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown will defend his 145-pound title for the first time against Leonard Garcia since capturing the crown from superstar Urijah Faber in November 2008. Garcia — a disciple of MMA trainer extraordinaire Greg Jackson — has earned his status as the number one contender after winning his first two fights for the promotion with first round knockouts.

Typically, WEC only features four main card bouts during its shows; however, the late addition of the featherweight scrap between rising star Jose Aldo and Chris Mickle has forced the organization to feature five bouts during this event.

That's great news.

In other action, lightweights Richard Crunkilton and Bart Palaszewski will mix it up in a number one contender eliminator match on the main card, too. The winner of the 155-pound contest is expected to earn the right to face division kingpin Jamie Varner at a later date.

Former 155-pound champion "Razor" Rob McCullough will also take on ex-division top contender in Marcus Hicks in a battle of little big men. And to round out the main card, undefeated Team Takedown prospect Johny Hendricks will lock horns with seven fight WEC veteran Alex Serdyukov in perhaps the last welterweight bout ever for the organization.

Here's the full lineup for WEC 39: "Brown vs. Garcia:"

Main event:

WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown (20-4) vs. Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia (12-3)

Main card (Televised):

145 lbs.: Jose "Junior" Aldo (13-1) vs. Chris Mickle (26-11-1)
155 lbs.: Bart "Bartimus" Palaszewski (30-11) vs. Rich "Cleat" Crunkilton (16-2)
155 lbs.: "Razor" Rob McCullough (16-5) vs. Marcus "The Wrecking Ball" Hicks (8-1)
170 lbs.: Johny Hendricks (4-0) vs. Alex "The Russian Crusher" Serdyukov (8-4)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

135 lbs.: Marcos "Louro" Galvao (6-2-1) vs. Damacio "The Angel of Death" Page (10-4)
155 lbs.: Mike "Wildfire" Budnik (7-1) vs. John Franchi (4-0)
170 lbs.: Justin Haskins (4-2) vs. Mike Pierce (6-1)
155 lbs.: Alex Karalexis (9-4) vs. Greg McIntyre (5-3)
155 lbs.: Danny Castillo (6-1) vs. Phil Cardella (7-2)
135 lbs.: Kenji Osawa (14-8-2) vs. Rafael Rebello (5-2)

The five main card bouts will air live on the Versus network beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET on fight night. Check in early and often to MMAmania.com for all your WEC 39 coverage on fight night.

Bellator FC welcomes relationship with Strikeforce

Posted: 23 Feb 2009 09:05 AM PST

Props: MMAWeekly

Quoteworthy:

I'm kind of old school. If the best fighting the best means that (Strikeforce) fighters would match up through our ESPN alliance on Bellator shows, that's what will happen. If the best fighting the best would mean there's an opportunity to test an Eddie Alvarez or a Wilson Reis or a Jorge Masvidal against the best that fight for Strikeforce, that would be very cool from my perspective. I'm not the kind of promoter that says you'll fight under this banner and this banner alone. If we can make those things work – and I think [Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has] shown a pretty open willingness to make those kind of things happen – and it were the right kind of fight, I'd be completely open to it.

-Bjorn Rebney, CEO of Bellator Fighting Championships, talks about the possibility of co-promoting fights between his freshly stocked stable of fighters and the new and improved Strikeforce family. Bellator FC will debut on April 4 on ESPN Deportes and consist of 12 two-hour events to be broadcast weekly in primetime on Saturday nights featuring a combination of tournament and non-tournament special feature bouts. Tournament fighters Eddie Alvarez, Jorge Masvidal and Wilson Reis, among others, are gunning for $175,000 in cash divided among the winner and finalists.

UFC Quick Quote: Dan Hardy locks eyes with Georges St. Pierre, thunder cracks

Posted: 23 Feb 2009 07:16 AM PST

“There are so many good guys in my division but I managed to lock eyes with Georges St Pierre outside the cage and we had a moment where I was like — ‘I’m coming for you, I’m coming for you.’ But I know I’ve still got improvements to make. There are some guys I need to pick off on my way up to him. But whoever the UFC send me next, I’ll be ready.”

– Dan Hardy talks to The Sun about the moments after his sensational knockout win over Rory Markham at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” at The O2 Arena in London, England, this past weekend. “The Outlaw” scored his second win inside the Octagon in impressive fashion and now has his long-term sights set on capturing the division title. He’ll need to put together a few more wins for that to happen, which he seems to understand. In fact, he expressed an interest in facing someone like Marcus Davis in his next fight. That sounds more like it … at least for now.

Andrei Arlovski action figure sneak peek from Round 5

Posted: 23 Feb 2009 06:44 AM PST

From the Round 5 MMA blog:

“Check out sneak peak images of the prototype sculpting for Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski’s forthcoming figurine. Art directed and approved by Arlovski himself, this figure will be 6″ tall and will be launched alongside Big John McCarthy, Frank Mir and Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira in the World of MMA Champions: Series 3 available this April.”

Those are some nice clay chops.
