BJ Penn: ‘Let’s keep fighting’

Quoteworthy:

“I was sad after that loss and a lot of things were going through my head. But I woke up one day and said, ‘You know what? I’m still the lightweight champ. Let’s keep fighting.’ … That will probably be this summer, so that’s my focus now…. After I defend my belt and he defends his belt, I’d love to do it again. Mostly because of the controversy. I just want it to be clean — no questions, no controversy.”

UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn talks about his desire to keep fighting. There was talk before and after his most recent fight against welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 on Jan. 31 that “The Prodigy — who made his Octagon debut back in 2001 — would hang up the gloves. Penn was outclassed by the Canadian for four rounds in a 170-pound contest. He still wants a rematch because of “the controversy” involved, but says he will focus on challenging fighters more his size at 155 pounds … for now. Penn will more than likely next take on number one division contender Kenny Florian sometime in summer.

Fight cards announced for upcoming British Fighting Championships (BFC) tournament

Posted: 15 Feb 2009 06:20 PM CST

UFC exports Dan 'The Outlaw' Hardy and Paul 'Relentless' Taylor were on hand to help draw the bouts for the upcoming British Fighting Championships (BFC) tournament.

The tournament will be held in seven different weight classes, all the way from heavyweight down to bantamweight. The fights will be spread out across a 12-show schedule and the tournament finals will be held sometime in December to crown the National British Champions.

There were also expected to be two Women’s Tournaments however due to the scarcity of British female fighters, the promoters had no other choice but to cancel plans.

Speaking of slim pickings, the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions weren't exactly full of a wide array of choices either which has led to a few changes.

Unlike the rest of the tournament, starting with 16 fighters in each weight class, the heavyweight division will start with eight fighters and move right to the quarterfinals.

The light heavyweight class is in a similar predicament. Four fighters have already being given byes into the quarterfinals. These are Arunas Andriuskevicus (7-2), Tom Blackledge (7-6), Dan Burzotta (3-0) and Przemyslaw Mysiala (10-5).

Also worth mentioning is that the organizations that make up BFC - Cage Warriors, FX3, Ultimate Force, Ultimate Warrior Challenge and AMMA will also continue promoting their own events as usual.

Lots to look forward to then regarding the British mixed martial arts scene. Lets hope they can fuse that quantity with quality. Also it will be interesting to see if a positive working relationship can be kept between all the owners of the respected organizations.

MMA Quick Quote: Gegard Mousasi puts American heavyweights on notice

Posted: 15 Feb 2009 06:05 PM CST

"To be honest, I want to go to heavyweight. I think if it's something you do and you win, people will be surprised, and I like that. It was always my dream to be the best. If you say, 'I'm the best heavyweight' it feels like you're the best heavyweight in the world. If you say, ‘I'm the best middleweight,’ there's always a couple of guys above you that could beat you. I can use steroids or stuff like it, [but] I want to fight in America, and the only way is to do it naturally because you will get caught in America … I can always fight in Japan, and I love fighting there. They always treat me well, but to show the world I'm the best, I think I need to go to America."

-DREAM Middleweight Champion Gegard Mousasi (24-2-1) confirms his desire to fight in the heavyweight division with Sherdog.com after making a quick pit stop at 205 lbs. in spring of 2009 to fight for DREAM. The "Young Vagabond" is an extremely talented fighter and in addition to riding an eleven-fight win streak, is also a former amateur boxing champion and has served as a striking coach for current WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko.

UFC 100: Georges St. Pierre vs Thiago Alves in Las Vegas on July 11

Posted: 15 Feb 2009 02:10 PM CST

Georges St. Pierre will defend his welterweight title against number one division contender Thiago Alves in main event of the landmark UFC 100 pay-per-view (PPV) event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11.

Company president Dana White — who is currently in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with his entourage to try and “save” UFC 97 from being scratched from the Bell Centre on April 18 — confirmed the blockbuster match up on a local radio station, CKAC Sports 730-AM, over the weekend.

This is great news for “Rush” — he can now shift focus away from “Grease Gate” and onto the American Top Team-trained powerhouse. St. Pierre scored a major technical knockout win against lightweight champion BJ Penn at UFC 94 on Jan 31. It was billed as the “fight of a lifetime;” however, it has since turned into a nightmare.

St. Pierre dominated Penn for four straight rounds. Penn acknowledged that he had sustained such abuse that he was more than likely knocked out on his feet after the second round. His corner threw in the towel at the end of round four to save the Hawaiian from further punishment.

The victory celebration, unfortunately for him, was short lived.

In the wake of the victory, Penn’s camp alleged that St. Pierre illegally applied Vaseline to the shoulders and back of the 170-pound champion, giving him a unfair advantage during the fight by essentially nullifying the superb Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills of “The Prodigy.”

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) was asked to investigate “Grease Gate” and is currently reviewing the incident. Penn since accused Kenny Florian of giving him the heads up that St. Pierre was a “greaser,” as well as a steroid user.

St. Pierre passed his screening for illegal/banned substances, which was administered immediately after the fight. He has never failed such a test. In short, the baseless allegations are perhaps more fodder for Penn to use to chip away from St. Pierre’s accomplishment on Super Bowl weekend.

Hopefully, controversy — real or contrived — will be absent on July 11 when St. Pierre tangles with the “Pitbull.”

Alves has been an absolute monster of late, finishing top-ranked opponents Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan, as well as outpointing Josh Koscheck on all three judges scorecards, in his three most recent performances.

He has been on a two-year tear, with five of his last seven wins ending by way of (technical) knockout. Alves, in fact, has not lost since 2006, which was against another top fighter in the division, Jon Fitch.

Stay tuned for more on UFC 100, including rumors and additional fight announcements.

Kanal surfing: UFC storms German television sets beginning Marz sieben

Posted: 15 Feb 2009 05:33 AM CST

UFC 99 is scheduled to go down from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13. But that hasn’t stopped the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) from making its presence felt before then.

German Sport Network Deutsches Sportfernsehen (DSF) has announced via its official website that it has reached a deal with Zuffa to bring 20 live or tape-delayed UFC events in 2009 to German television starting with UFC Unleashed on March 7.

The highlight show is scheduled to air each Saturday following that beginning at 11pm.

The premiere episode will showcase Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine, Frank Mir vs. Antoni Hardonk, Patrick Cote vs. Kendall Grove and Tyson Griffin vs. David Lee.

Also expected to air are UFC Countdown and UFC 96 just a week after it airs live on pay-per-view on March 7.

Landing a television deal with Germany is sure to give a huge boost to the UFC’s international appeal. There were some initial concerns about the fruition of this partnership after the failed 2004-2006 run with Germany's top pay-TV operator Premiere.

DSF is a privately owned network that also features quiz shows and eroticism in addition to its sports content. I know there’s a head joke in there somehwere but since it’s Sunday I’ll just keep it professional.

The fight card for UFC 99 may still be in its infancy, but don’t be surprised to see former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture make the trip overseas.

Again.

“The Natural,” who spent four years of U.S. Army service stationed at the "Fliegerhorst" base of Langendiebach in Erlensee, Germany, has been in talks to face former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at this event.

And if Big Nog isn’t available, rumor has it some Croatian Cop is looking to give the Octagon a second try.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more details and information as it becomes available.
