Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua vs Mark Coleman UFC 93 fight confirmed Jan. 17

Posted: 01 Oct 2008 06:29 AM CDT

Light heavyweight contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3) will return to the Octagon to rematch Mark Coleman (15-8) in a 205-pound showdown at UFC 93 at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17, 2009.

"The Hammer" defeated Rua in controversial fashion at PRIDE 31 back in 2006 when an awkward landing broke the Brazilian's arm less than a minute into the fight. It was a bitter “fluke” loss for the 2005 Pride FC Grand Prix Champion and one that he has been out to avenge ever since it happened.

Rua made his debut with the promotion with much fanfare and promise late last year, being billed as the top 205-pound fighter in the world. He then lost his first match via third round submission (rear naked choke) in an action-packed fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: “Knockout” in September 2007.

Griffin went on to challenge for and win the light heavyweight championship. Meanwhile, Rua had surgery to repair a knee injury, which he then re-injured several months later while training for a fight against Chuck Liddell at UFC 85: “Bedlam” in June that never happened.

He has not competed since the loss to Griffin. And when he does step inside the Octagon against Coleman he will have been on the sidelines for almost a year and a half.

Coleman — the first-ever UFC heavyweight champion and most recent inductee into the promotion’s hall of fame — will return to the Octagon for the first time since 1999. He had a semi-successful run in the Pride FC organization, with the highlight of his work overseas being the champion of the first-ever open weight grand prix in 2000.

Since that time, however, the 43-year-old has compiled an average record (4-4), taking on some of the best competitors in the division such as Fedor Emelianenko (two losses), Mirko Cro Cop (loss) and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira (loss).

Coleman — the "Godfather" of the ground and pound — is a collegiate national wrestling champion for THE Ohio State University and competed in the Olympics in 1992. He was supposed to challenge Brock Lesnar in his return to the promotion in August before his own injury forced him off the card.

UFC 93 features a main event between light heavyweights and former champions Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson. It will air on pay-per-view (PPV) at 10 p.m. ET on fight night.

Rich Franklin vs Dan Henderson UFC 93 fight set for Dublin

Posted: 01 Oct 2008 06:05 AM CDT

Two former champions who are still among the top light heavyweights in the world, Rich Franklin (24-3) and Dan Henderson (23-7), are slated to headline UFC 93 in a monster 205-pound showdown at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17.

Franklin rebounded from a crushing defeat at the hands of Anderson Silva (his second) at UFC 77: "Hostile Territory" back in 2007 to pound out Travis Lutter at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2" in April of this year. He then followed up that appearance with another winning performance against Matt Hamill with a third round technical knockout at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” earlier this month.

"Ace" has been perfect inside the Octagon (11-0) with the exception of his two losses to "Spider."

Henderson hasn't had much luck against the Brazilian, either.

"Dangerous Dan" –- with his proven chin and prestigious Greco Roman wrestling pedigree –- was supposed to be the man to derail the seemingly invincible champion. And in the first round of their fight at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion," Henderson appeared to be well on his way.

However, Silva came out in the second frame and finished Henderson with a submission (rear naked choke) -– the first time that the former Pride FC dual champion had been stopped early since 2005. He, too, rebounded from the loss at UFC 83, outpointing Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom Rousimar Palharas on all three judges scorecards at UFC 88.

It was his first win inside the Octagon since 1998.

In any other promotion –- or if Silva was not in the UFC -– it's likely that Franklin or Henderson would be middleweight champion. But now both fighters are competing in a heavier division. And there’s no telling if either fighter will continue to fight at middleweight moving forward.

However, Henderson — who simultaneously held both the Pride FC 205- and 183-pound titles — would be the more likely candidate to challenge the “Spider” anytime soon.

UFC 93 will also feature another light heavyweight showdown between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Mark Coleman. It is the first-ever event for the promotion in the region, airing on pay-per-view (PPV) at 10 p.m ET.

Stay tuned for more UFC 93 fight card updates.

Elite XC fight card finalized for ‘Heat’ Oct. 4

Posted: 30 Sep 2008 01:35 PM CDT

Elite XC recently announced the official fight card for its “Heat” event, which takes place this Saturday (October 4) from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

There were no changes to the televised main card that airs on CBS, beginning at 9 p.m. ET. The featured fight of the night, of course, will be a heavyweight bout between Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson and Ken Shamrock.

Here’s the rest of the main card:

170 lbs.: Elite XC Welterweight Champion Jake Shields (21-4–1) vs. Paul "Semtex" Daley (18-6-2)
265 lbs.: Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski (13-5) vs. Roy "Big Country" Nelson (13-2)
140 lbs.: Gina "Conviction" Carano (6-0) vs. Kelly Kobald (16-2-1)
185 lbs.: Murilo "Ninja" Rua (16-8-1) vs. Benji Radach (18-4)

There were, however, a few changes to the under card worth noting.

The middleweight match between 24-year-old Russian knockout artist Alexander Shlemenko (21-3) and Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (11-4) has been pulled from the card. Elite XC officials more thank likely feel the match up deserves some airtime on Showtime’s November 8 main card.

Either way, it will no longer be taking place in Sunrise this Saturday, which is a shame because that fight looked like it had some real potential.

Also Mike Aina (9-6-1) has been taken off the card and will be replaced by Conor Heun (7-2) in a lightweight fight against James Edson Berto (14-5-1).

Here’s what the entire under card lineup looks like:

140 lbs.: Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (5-0) vs. Yoko Takahashi (13-9)
160 lbs.: James Edson Berto (14-5-1) vs. Conor Heun (7-2)
205 lbs.: Seth Petruzelli (9-4) vs. Aaron Rosa (11-2)
170 lbs.: Lorenzo Borgomeo (4-0) vs. Mickey Gomez (7-4)
140 lbs.: David Gomez (0-0) vs. Brett Jackowski (1-0)
160 lbs.: Jorge Boechat (3-2) vs. Nicolae Curry (0-0)

Remember, MMAmania.com will be in attendence this Saturday night at the BankAtlantic Center, bringing you up to the minute LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of Elite XC: “Heat.”

Check in early and often.

Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua vs Benji Radach Elite XC fight preview and prediction

Posted: 30 Sep 2008 11:36 AM CDT

Murilo Ninja Rua vs Benji Radach Elite XC
Elite XC: "Heat" — the third installment of "Saturday Night Fights" on CBS — is set to go off live from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., this Saturday, October 4, beginning at 9 p.m. ET on national television.

To get us prepared for the event, we will showcase a daily feature for each main card fight leading up to the event. These features will include information on the fighters, predictions, as well as training notes from each fighter.

The first fight of the televised CBS portion of the card will be a middleweight tilt between Murilo “Ninja” Rua (16-8-1) and Benji “Razor” Radach (18-4).

Here’s the breakdown of the bout:

Fighter backgrounds

Murilo Rua — "Ninja" is a 28-year0old fighter from Curitiba, Brazil. He’s been in the professional fight game for more than eight years, boasting 13 fights under the Pride FC banner.

He was the first man to hold the Elite XC middleweight title after defeating Joey Villasenor for the vacant strap last year. However, he lost his 185-pound title in his first defense against Robbie Lawler, who is still the current champ.

His younger brother — Mauricio “Shogun” Rua — was at one time considered the best light heavyweight fighter in the world.

Murilo has the reputation of being jiu-jitsu based, but he also has a very nice Muay Thai game that he honed during his years training at the famous Chute Boxe Academy.

After having competed at both light heavyweight and heavyweight at one point in his career, he is considered a strong middleweight.

Benji Radach — “Razor” is a 29-year-old fighter from Castle Rock, Wash., who doubles as the corporate director of instructor’s training for LA Boxing. He’s been competing in professional mixed martial arts for about seven and a half years.

He’s fought three times in the UFC’s welterweight division, where he put together a record of (1-1-1) with a win over Nick Serra, a loss to Sean Sherk and a no contest with Steve Berger.

In June of 2004 he fought Chris Leben at Sportfight 4: “Fight for Freedom.” During the match "The Crippler" landed one of his patented bombs that broke Radach’s jaw so severely that he was almost forced to retire from fighting for good.

He was out of action for nearly three years before the International Fight League (IFL) came calling with an opportunity to fight at middleweight. He won his first five fights before losing to Matt Horwich at IFL: World Grand Prix Finals.

October 4 will be his first fight since losing to Horwich last December.

Radach is also known for having once stopped a robbery in progress at a Vancouver restaurant by physically unarming the assailant.

Training notes:

Murilo Rua – “Ninja” trains out of his own gym in Curitiba called Universidade da Luta (University of Fighting). He and his brother “Shogun” own and have been running the academy ever since leaving Chute Boxe late last year.

Here’s a snip from Rua on his preparation:

"My preparation to face Benji Radach is very good, like always, and I'm working my stand up game and MMA with Carioca and Mauricio Veio for this fight. Benji is a good Boxing and Wrestling fighter, so I'm preparing myself on theses parts too. I think I'll get a title show if I win this fight, it's almost set.”

Benji Radach — He spent all of last year training out of American Top Team in Florida, but his job has him out west now where he’s been bouncing around California in preparation for this fight trying to get as much training and advice from the right people as possible.

He’s been to Bas Rutten's Elite MMA, Dan Henderson's Team Quest and HB Ultimate Training Center while training for this fight.

Here’s what “El Guapo” had to say about his chances against Rua:

“Benji’s one of those guys, who if he’s 100 percent in shape, I’ll bet him against Anderson Silva, and I really mean this. People don’t realize how much force and violence he can bring. It’s really sick, the way he hits the focus pad. Benji’s wrestling is sick. He’s got submissions. The only thing is, when he gets tired, he lets himself open and sometimes he gets hit. So the way he’s training now is, he’s really working hard on his cardio. He’s in shape, let me tell you.”

Fight breakdown:

“Ninja’s” gameplan should be to avoid Radach’s power punches on the feet and to eventually get the fight to the mat where he can work for a submission.

Radach needs to avoid being put on his back and see how he fares on his feet. If he can’t win the fight there, then it’s going to be a long night for him.

Regardless, Rua will be confident wherever the fight goes. He’s stood toe-to-toe with guys like Rampage Jackson and Dan Henderson. It’s safe to say he won’t be reluctant to exchange punches with Radach if that’s the way the fight is going.

And he’ll be the bigger and stronger guy.

He’ll probably look to clinch a lot early on in between exchanges trying to wear Radach down. But as soon as he feels he can get the fight to the mat he’ll probably take it there.

Once it’s there, any advantage that Radach may have had will be gone. Rua would likely gain a dominant position and either snatch up one of Radach’s arms, secure a choke or ground and pound him out for a stoppage.

In 22 pro fights, Radach has never been submitted, so we’re calling for a ground and pound technical knockout.

Final prediction:

Murilo “Ninja” Rua via technical knockout in round two

Check back in tomorrow as we take an in-depth look at the ladies — Gina Carano and Kelly Kobald.

Travis Lutter: ‘Patrick Cote is going to get murdered’ by Anderson Silva

Posted: 30 Sep 2008 09:07 AM CDT

Props: MMARated.com

Quoteworthy:

“Cote is going to get murdered. Anderson Silva is really, really good and Cote is basically a Leben fight for Anderson.”

Former UFC top middleweight contender Travis Lutter shares his thoughts on the UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” main event at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25. Lutter has competed against both Silva and Cote. In fact, he made short work of the Canadian at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 Finale with a fight-ending armbar, which earned him an opportunity to challenge the “Spider” for his 185-pound belt that he eventually went on to lose. “The Serial Killer” also shot down an earlier Sherdog.com report that he would return to the Octagon at UFC 91 against Joe Doerksen. That match up will not happen.
