Posted: 14 Oct 2008 06:39 AM CDT

Former IFL middleweight champion Dan Miller and IFL lightweight Jim Miller were our guests this past Monday on MMAmania.com's exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio.

Hosted by Larry Pepe, Pro MMA Radio is professional, guest-driven program that features some of mixed martial arts biggest names.

If you're looking for a radio show that revolves around a couple of MMA fans ranting and raving about everything that's already been covered ad nauseam, then Pro MMA Radio probably isn't for you.

However, if you want to hear from actual fighters and industry insiders answering questions that are relevant to the current MMA scene, tune in every Monday night at 9pm for our exclusive live feed.

Yen-Hur: Zuffa brings the UFC to Japanese pay-per-view

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 11:16 PM CDT

Here today, Baragon tomorrow.

Zuffa has confirmed reports of its long-anticipated return to Japanese television after signing a new two-year contract with WOWOW, Japan’s premiere commercial satellite television broadcaster since 1991.

WOWOW was home to more than 50 UFC shows from 2001 to 2007 and boasts a viewership of more than 2.4 million.

Starting with UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben, WOWOW will continue to telecast all upcoming UFC pay-per-view events on a short delay, with most or all beginning at 12 Midnight JST.

From UFC President Dana White:

“The Japanese market has always been important to the UFC, and we want to bring MMA and all of its biggest stars back to Japan. We are thrilled to be back with WOWOW.”

Whether or not this new agreement is in conjunction with a rumored Japanese invasion at some point in 2009 remains to be seen.

While on the surface a UFC presence may appear detrimental to struggling promotions like DREAM and Sengoku, it could actually be of benefit if the UFC events are able to stimulate a renewed interest in mixed martial arts.

Who knows, maybe it even gets us one step closer to signing Japanese stars like Takanori Gomi and Kid Yamamoto.

Shooto at Kitazawa Town Hall recap and quick results

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 09:19 PM CDT

By Stefan Manojlovic

Shooto at Kitazawa Town Hall took place earlier today in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan.

In the main event, Junji Ikoma came out on top to close the show in the last bout of the evening. He finished Yusei Shimokawa just two minutes into round one with a triangle choke.

Another early stoppage came courtesy of Shin Kashiwa when he overwhelmed Tajirio Iseki with some vicious punches to get a TKO victory in round one.

Ken Numajiri made his MMA debut a successful one when he dominated Masumi Tozawa in all three rounds to score the unanimous decision. Tozawa may have to go back to drawing board after going winless in four attempts.

The Shooto lightweight & welterweight semifinals also took place with some impressive performances from the young stars.

In the lightweight tournament, Issei Tamura looked sharp in his unanimous decision win over Takumi Ota. Tamura is now 2-0 and on his way to the tournament finals.

Ikuo Usuda stole the show when he finished Kazuya Satomoto via brutal TKO just sixty seconds into the very first round. He certainly has a lot of potential and now has the chance to impress fans further when he fights in the upcoming finals.

Here are the Shooting at Kitazawa Hall complete results:

Junji Ikoma (11-9-3) defeated Yusei Shimokawa (5-4) by triangle choke (2:23-R1)

Josh Koscheck vs Thiago Alves UFC 90 fight booked with Diego Sanchez scratched

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 07:00 PM CDT

kos alves
Josh Koscheck will replace an injured Diego Sanchez to fight Thiago Alves on less than two weeks notice at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25.

“The Nightmare” had to withdraw from the highly anticipated welterweight showdown because of torn rib cartilage sustained during training the promotion just announced.

Koscheck — who is still scheduled to fight Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” on December 10 — has won nine of 11 bouts inside the Octagon since his stint on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) back in early 2005, transforming from a world class wrestler into a dangerous well-rounded fighter in less than three years.

He has faced top competition in the loaded division in his last five appearances, including a showdown with current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (he was not champion at the time). He lost that bout via three-round decision but won over a legion of new fans with the performance for being able to hang with the uber talented Canadian.

Koscheck has since defeated rising star Dustin Hazelett with a second round technical knockout at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" back in March and grizzled veteran Chris Lytle via bloodbath, er, unanimous decision at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" this past July.

With a win over Yoshida, the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout would have been knocking on the door for a title shot along with the winner of the previously scheduled bout between Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves.

Well, opportunity knocked sooner rather than later and “Kos” has answered the call to fight “The Pitbull” to possibly determine the next 170-pound title challenger. In fact, we’re told that if “Kos” can defeat Alves and then beat Yoshida he is guaranteed the winner of the fight between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn sometime in early 2009.

Alves is fresh of ridiculous performance against Matt Hughes, taking out the former champion in the second round of their main event tilt at UFC 85: "Bedlam" just last month. Prior to that, "The Pitbull" wiped out another perennial powerhouse, Karo Parisyan, at UFC Fight Night 13.

The 24-year-old Brazilian was already on the fast track to an eventual title shot. And a win over Koscheck would certainly put him over the top.

This is a fine replacement for a co-main event to go along with the middleweight showdown between 185-pound champion Anderson Silva and challenger Patrick Cote.

CB Dollaway vs Mike Massenzio UFC 92 fight possible

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 03:33 PM CDT

cb dollaway vs mike massenzio ufc 92
The Ultimate Fighter 7 runner-up CB Dollaway (7-1) will make his third straight Octagon appearance when he takes on Mike Massenzio (11-2) at UFC 92 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on New Year's Eve weekend according to FiveOuncesOfPain.com.

“The Doberman” was supposed to fight Jorge Rivera on the same card; however, it appears that Massenzio has replaced him for reasons unknown at this time.

Dollaway was unsuccessful in his bid to win it all at the TUF 7 Finale on June 21, losing to eventual tournament winner Amir Sadollah via first round submission (armbar).

The Arizona Combat Sports-trained fighter was able to rebound in his next appearance and score an impressive submission victory over Jesse "Yellow Submarine" Taylor less than a month later at Fight Night 14 with a rare "Peruvian necktie."

He is a strong wrestler out of Arizona State University (ASU) — a key strength that will match up similar to that of Massenzio’s, a two-time high school state wrestling and a national junior college champion from Bergen Community College out of Paramus, N.J.

Massenzio was among several talented fighters the UFC signed to multifight contracts after the now defunct International Fight League (IFL) fire sale. He looked impressive in his debut for the promotion, submitting Drew McFedries via first round submission (kimura) at UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Neb., on September 17.

UFC 92 features the light heavyweight championship bout between Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans, as well as the second half of the heavyweight tournament eliminator between interim division champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir.

Thales Leites vs Drew McFedries UFC 90 fight likely with Goran Reljic out

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 02:15 PM CDT

Hard-hitting Drew McFedries (7-4) has answered the call to fill-in for the injured Goran Reljic and fight Thales Leites (13-1) at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25.

We passed along news just yesterday that 24-year-old undefeated Croatian fighter sustained a back injury while training for the upcoming 185-pound fight, forcing him out of the bout with less than two weeks until showtime.

Enter "Massacre."

McFedries has had a rollercoaster career inside the Octagon, winning every other fight and being unable to string together consecutive wins in six attempts with the promotion.

He most recently lost to Mike Massenzio via submission (kimura) at UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Neb., on September 17, meaning the Miletich product will compete twice in little more than one month. If his pattern is any historical indicator, however, then McFedries is poised for a win.

But McFedries will need more than that to defeat the crafty Brazilian.

Fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Leites has rattled of four straight wins inside that Octagon. And that includes a controversial split decision win of perennial contender, Nathan Marquardt, at UFC 85: "Bedlam" back in June.

His only career loss is to Martin Kampmann in his promotional debut back in 2006.

Leites was supposed to take on Dean Lister at UFC Fight Night 15. However, the "Boogeyman" sustained an injury during training and was scratched from the showdown, making McFedries the third opponent for which Leites has had to prepare in just about as many months.

UFC to likely return to Nationwide Arena in Ohio March 7, 2009

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 12:41 PM CDT

It appears to be a growing traditional right of passage — when the Arnold EXPO sets up shop in Columbus, Ohio, for its annual convention — the largest health and fitness expo in the nation — the Ultimate Fighting Championship follows suit.

So has been the case for the last two years and it appears that 2009 will be no different.

Executive Director of the Ohio Athletic Commission, Bernie Profato, revealed in a Cleveland Plain Dealer article that the promotion "has tentative plans to return to Nationwide Arena in Columbus on March 7, 2009."

The Arnold EXPO, which hosts 650 booths and more than 150,000 fitness fans, is scheduled to run from March 6-9.

If the event takes place — and it more than likely will — it will be the fourth major UFC event to be held in the "Buckeye State" since the promotion invaded Ohio for the first time ever in March 2007.

Here is the list of recent UFC events that the state has hosted:

UFC 68: "The Uprising" at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 3, 2007
UFC 77: "Hostile Territory" at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 20, 2007
UFC 82: Pride of a Champion" at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 1, 2008

UFC 82, the most recent pay-per-view (PPV) event to be held there, was a star-studded card that was packed with talent from the bottom up, featuring the 185-pound showdown between UFC Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva, and the last man to hold the Pride FC 183-pound belt, Dan Henderson.

In addition, Randy Couture blew the lid of the Nationwide Arena back at UFC 68 when he returned from retirement to score and improbable win over Tim Sylvia to capture the heavyweight title at the age of 43.

In short, Ohio usually plays hosts to some great UFC events. And although nothing is official at this time let's hope the promotions stays true to tradition all the way around.
