Brotherly Love: UFC’s Dan & Jim Miller featured on tonight’s Pro MMA Radio

Posted: 13 Oct 2008 06:19 AM CDT

Former IFL middleweight champion Dan Miller and IFL lightweight Jim Miller will be tonight's guest on MMAmania.com's exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio airing at 9pm ET.

Jim is checking in with us before he leaves for his UFC debut against David Baron at UFC 89 in Birmingham, England. Brother Dan will be in action the following weekend at UFC 90 against fellow IFL standout Matt Horwich.

The brothers will talk about about working their way up the local MMA fighting circuit to fighting in the now defunct IFL to getting their shot at the big time in the grandest stage of them all, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Hosted by Larry Pepe, Pro MMA Radio is professional, guest-driven program that features some of mixed martial arts biggest names.

If you're looking for a radio show that revolves around a couple of MMA fans ranting and raving about everything that's already been covered ad nauseam, then Pro MMA Radio probably isn't for you.

However, if you want to hear from actual fighters and industry insiders answering questions that are relevant to the current MMA scene, tune in every Monday night at 9pm ET for our exclusive live feed.

See you tonight!

Frank Shamrock vs Ken Shamrock fight in the works for early 2009

Posted: 12 Oct 2008 10:24 PM CDT

Shamrock vs Shamrock

Adopted and quasi-estranged brothers Frank and Ken Shamrock have apparently signed a contract to meet inside the cage once and for all sometime in 2009, according to a recent ESPN.com article.

The brothers have had somewhat of a behind the scenes feud going on for years. And a fight between the two has been talked about for a while and now … so take this latest announcement with a grain of salt.

Frank is a master promoter, which means that he could be using all the high profile attention Ken received for not fighting Kimbo Slice at Elite XC: “Heat” on October 4. In the past, he’s referred to fighting his brother as, "the biggest fight in mixed martial arts history."

Here is his most recent take on the match up:

“We’ve both signed a contract to fight each other. Ken is down with it. We talked about it two years ago, and we’ve agreed materially to fight. The fight has a cool hook, brothers beating each other up. Everyone wants to see that.”

Frank has not competed since losing his Strikeforce middleweight title to Cung Le earlier this year. He could not answer the bell for the fourth round in a thrilling affair because his forearm was shattered during the fight.

He is also on the CBS “Saturday Night Fights” television announcer crew. And when Ken pulled out of the Slice fight because of a cut sustained hours for the bout, Frank — who has not been training for a fight and competes at 185 pounds — volunteered to fight the much larger Slice on two hours notice.

However, CBS executives reportedly nixed the idea and opted to go with Seth Petruzelli instead. The rest, as “they” say is history.

So since that horse left the barn, Frank switched public relations gears and now apparently is already beating his drum for a showdown with his 44-year old brother. For his part, Ken is equally game.

Here’s a snip from him:

“Will the fight happen? Absolutely. He’s got a buttkicking coming to him. Everything I’ve learned, everything I have bottled up in me, is going to come out on him. I’ve still got love for Frank, but I’m angry at him. He feels he’s better than me, but I always spanked him in the gym. Now he wants to show me. I figured he’d wait until I was 50 years old, but I guess he’s waiting until I turn 45.”

Ken is a mixed martial arts pioneer who has not won a professional fight in more than four years. In fact, he has lost eight of his last 10 fights dating back to 2001 and he's on a five-fight losing skid.

A UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Ken dropped his first and most recent bout under the ProElite banner, losing to Robert "Buzz" Berry via first knockout at Cage Rage 25: "Bring it On" earlier this year.

That, too, was supposed to be a warm-up for the "World's Most Dangerous Man" to groom him for a big money match down the road against either Slice, or his younger brother, Frank.

He didn’t deliver … and he rarely does these days.

But that may not matter Elite XC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen appears warm to the idea.

Here’s what he had to say:

“They’re talking about doing it and we’re interested in the fight. It’s a storyline everyone can relate to, Cain versus Abel.”

It’s interesting that Elite XC is open to working with Ken after everything that happened as a result of him being scratched from the Slice fight.

He put them in a terrible spot. And then everything that has transpired since that night, including allegations of fight influencing, put the already struggling promotion in a much deeper whole of which to climb out.

Furthermore, is this really a fight that fight fans want to see or is it a fight that Frank and Ken think the fans want to see? Let is know what you think in the comments section below.

Shooto at Kitazawa Town Hall preview

Posted: 12 Oct 2008 08:27 PM CDT

By Stefan Manojlovic

Shooto returns to Kitazawa Town Hall on Monday October 13 in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan and will feature the semifinals of the Rookie Tournament as well as some other great match-ups.

In the main event, Junji Ikoma is set to collide with Yusei Shimokawa. Ikoma’s last few fights have been disappointing for him to say the least, coming off two straight draws against Jin Akimoto. The first occurred back in January at Shooto ‘Back To Our Roots 7′ and the second was in June at Shooto ‘Shooting Disco 5′.

Yusei Shimokawa will also be hoping to turn his luck around after coming up short in his unanimous decision loss to Mamoru Yamaguchi at Shooto ‘Shooting Disco 1′ in June 2007.

Could ring rust be a factor for Shimokawa?

Also on the card is a Welterweight (154lbs) bout which finds Shinobu Miura challenging Koichi Taguchi. Both fighters are looking to improve on past performances. Miura drew in his last fight against Luiz Andrade at DEEP 37 ‘Impact’. Taguchi is on a two fight losing streak with the most recent coming against Kenichi Hattori at Shooto ‘Gig Central 14′ last March.

Ken Numajiri will be making his mixed martial arts debut at this event. His opponent is Masumi Tozawa, who has yet to win a fight himself. Tozawa’s last bout did not end well for him after being knocked out with a brutal slam at Shooto ‘Shooting Disco 4′ in February against Haruo Ochi.

I’m sure Numajiri is hoping to further add to Tozawa’s dismal MMA record.

Last but not least the Shooto Lightweight and Welterweight Rookie Tournaments are in the semifinal stage with the winners facing off to determine who is the promotion’s top rookie in each participating weight class.

The featherweight bout between Makoto Yamauchi (1-0) and Nobuhiro Hayakawa (1-4-2) has been cancelled due to Yamauchi suffering a rib injury.

Here is the official fight card for Shooto at Kitazawa Town Hall:

Main Card

Junji Ikoma (10-9-3) vs. (5-3) Yusei Shimokawa
Shinobu Miura (1-3-3) vs. (1-2-1) Koichi Taguchi
Shin Kashiwa (0-1-1) vs. (0-1) Taijiro Iseki
Masumi Tozawa (0-1-2) vs. (0-0) Ken Numajiri

Lightweight Rookie Tournament Semifinal

Takumi Ota (4-1-1) vs. (1-0) Issei Tamura

Welterweight Rookie Tournament Semifinal

Kazuya Satomoto (4-1) vs. (1-0) Ikuo Usuda

Goran Reljic injured and unable to fight Thales Leites at UFC 90

Posted: 12 Oct 2008 07:42 PM CDT

goran reljic
Goran Reljic sustained a back injury while training for his upcoming 185-pound fight against Thales Leites (14-1) at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25, and has been forced out of the bout, according to MMAFighting.com.

The match up was between two up-and-coming talents to determine who would rise to the top faster within the middleweight division. No replacement has been named at this time and because the pay-per-view (PPV) event is less than two weeks away it’s possible that one may not be plugged in.

However, the report indicates that the hunt for a fill-in is already underway.

If Leites is scratched as a result of the Reljic injury then look for another bout previously on the untelevised portion of the card such as Gray Maynard vs. Rich Clementi or Spencer Fisher vs. Shannon Gugerty to be promoted to the PPV telecast.

Reljic is a 23-year-old undefeated Croatian fighter who stopped Wilson Gouveia via technical knockout in his debut performance for the promotion at UFC 84: “Ill Will” back in May. He trains with the Roger Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in London, England, where he is a purple belt.

In addition, he is the protege of former UFC heavyweight fighter, Mirko Cro Cop.

Georges St. Pierre earns Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Bruno Fernandes

Props: GracieMag.com

Quoteworthy:

"This was the high point in my career … When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today."

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre gushes about his recent promotion to Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Bruno Fernandes from the Gracie Barra camp. Fernandes is a decorated practitioner who now resides in Canada along with “Rush.” The honor could perhaps not have come at a better time — St. Pierre is set to rematch BJ Penn at UFC 94 on January 31 … and his jiu-jitsu is kind slick, too. Just a little bit.
