UFC Quick Quote: Gabriel Gonzaga interested in Brock Lesnar clash of monsters

Posted: 07 Oct 2008 08:56 AM CDT

"[Brock Lesnar] was never proposed to us, but Gabriel Gonzaga would love to fight him because he's a big name and I think it would be a clash of two monsters. I think it would be a huge fight so if the UFC gave Gonzaga that honor he would be happy to fight Brock Lesnar."

– Marco Alvan — the head trainer for former UFC heavyweight number on contender Gabriel Gonazaga — tells BostonHerald.com that he and his fighter would be interested in a fight with Brock Lesnar in the near future. “Napao” is among the larger fighters in the division (like Lesnar) who also has a tight submission game (unlike Lesnar), which would more than likely be another dangerous test for the former professional wrestling star. Lesnar takes on Randy Couture — who beat down Gonzaga last year — at UFC 91 on November 15. Gonzaga will also compete on that same card against Octagon newcomer Josh Hendricks. If Couture defeats Lesnar and Gonzaga defeats Hendricks it would be real interesting to see if the promotion would book a fight like this, which would once again put a big pay-per-view (PPV) money machine once again at risk of losing to a much more experienced fighter.

Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva steroid hearing with CSAC set for Oct. 22

Posted: 06 Oct 2008 08:08 PM CDT

Elite XC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Silva’s appeal hearing will take place at the Ronald Reagan State Building in Los Angeles, Calif., on October 22, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. PT. The champ tested positive for the anabolic steroid Boldenone following his win over Justin Eilers to capture the first-ever (and this vacant) strap on July 19.

Since that time “Bigfoot,” his management team and American Top Team (ATT) camp have claimed innocence. Here’s a statement released from the Brazilian after the test results were revealed:

“Dear Family, Friends, Fans and Public, I did not use the steroid Boldenone, or any other steroid of prohibited substance. I don't agree and never have agreed with the use of this kind of product in order to win, for this is cheating. I will go to the full extent of my power and the law to prove my innocence in this matter.”

Silva’s case is based around the fact that he suffers from the medical condition known as Acromegaly, which is more commonly referred to as “Gigantism.”

Here’s an explanation of the disease given on Wikipedia.com:

“Acromegaly is a syndrome that results when the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone (HGH) after epiphyseal plate closure. A number of disorders may be affecting the pituitary to create this circumstance, although most commonly it involves a GH producing tumor derived from a distinct type of cells (somatotrophs) and called pituitary adenoma. Acromegaly most commonly affects adults in middle age and can result in severe disfigurement, serious complicating conditions and premature death if unchecked. Because of its insidious pathogenesis and slow progression, the disease is hard to diagnose in the early stages and is frequently missed for many years, when changes in external features, especially of the face, become noticeable.”

Silva’s manager Alex Davis maintains that, “It would be completely insensible or even dangerous to make use of any other steroids or substances that could worsen that kind of problem.”

We’ll find out on October 22 if his argument can stand up in a court of law. Traditionally, the California commission has been one of the toughest states on steroid use, but this sounds like medical proof that he at least would have an abnormal level in his system.

Whether that means he did or did not take anything extra on top of that is for the commission officials to decide.

Elite XC has stood by its champ throughout this difficult time and he was even seen this weekend at “Heat” in Sunrise, Fla., carrying around his championship belt. For now, he remains the company’s Heavyweight Champion until the CSAC hands down its final decision.

He faces a 12-month suspension and fine if the finding is upheld.

Elite XC: ‘Heat’ paydays and salaries

Posted: 06 Oct 2008 05:37 PM CDT

MMAmania.com has received the fighter payouts from Elite XC: “Heat” from the Florida State Boxing Commission for the CBS event held on October 4 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

Main event loser and hometown favorite Kimbo Slice pocketed half a million dollars for his 14 second loss to “The Ultimate Fighter 2″ alum Seth Petruzelli. Slice missed out on a $100,000 win bonus as well.

Petruzelli reported on a radio program earlier today that he made six figures for the win … he was half right, according to the commission, anyway. He took home $50,000 for stepping up at the last minute and shocking the world.

The Affliction/Elite XC co-promoted heavyweight bout participants were paid out by the tee shirt company turned MMA organization. The former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski earned $500,000 for his second round technical knockout win. Roy Nelson walked away with $80,000.

Elite XC’s other top two earners were Welterweight Champion Jake Shields ($50,000) in his first title defense and Murilo “Ninja” Rua ($35,000) in a loss.

Here are the entire payouts and bonuses for Elite XC: “Heat”:

Lorenzo Borgomeo — $1,500
Gomez defeated Borgomeo via submission (armbar) in round two

Bryan Hamade — $1,000 ($500 to show, $500 to win)
David Gomez — $1,000

Nicolae Curry — $1,500 ($750 to show, $750 to win)
Jorge Boechat — $1,000

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

The total base fighter payroll for the CBS event was $1,319,000. Affliction MMA payed $580,000 of that total for the heavyweight bout between Andrei Arlovski and Roy Nelson.

Seth Petruzelli: Elite XC ‘didn’t want me to take’ Kimbo Slice down

Posted: 06 Oct 2008 03:14 PM CDT

Props: Real Radio 104.1

Quoteworthy:

“My original plan was to throw out push kicks, have him think that I’m gonna throw them more, and then to shoot in on him, obviously. But the promoters kind of hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him. They didn’t want me to take him down, let’s just put it that way. It was worth my while to try to stand up and punch with him.”

Not like it matters now, but Elite XC fighter Seth Petruzelli talks about the promotion “hinting” to keep his fight against Kimbo Slice this past Saturday night standing rather than to try and take the street brawler to the ground. He ended up ending the fight standing in just 14 seconds. “The Silverback” indicated that he was paid “six figures” to take the fight against Slice, which is a nice payday for the former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter. The interview took place today on “The Monsters in the Morning” — a popular Orlando radio program in which Petruzelli is a regular guest to discuss mixed martial arts — on Real Radio 104.1. It’s a very interesting listen to say the least.

The Ultimate Fighter tryouts locations announced for upcoming ‘U.S. vs U.K.’ season

Posted: 06 Oct 2008 01:23 PM CDT

tuf9 us vs uk
Spike TV today announced additional details for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9, which will feature a mix of middleweight and welterweight hopefuls who will compete for "six figure" UFC contracts in a tournament-style format.

Coaches for the "U.S. vs. U.K." themed installment have not been decided; however, British middleweight contender and TUF 3 winner, Michael Bisping, is a leading candidate to land one of the two open positions.

In the meantime, tryouts for the mixed martial arts reality series will take place here in the United States and in London to determine the contestants.

Here are the details revealed earlier today for those interested:

London:

DATE: Monday, October 20, 2008
VENUE: Earls Court Exhibition Centre
LOCATION: Warwick Road, London, SW5 9TA
TELEPHONE: +44 (0)207 370 8539
REPORT TIME: Fighter registration begins at 9 AM GMT; Tryouts at 10 AM GMT.

Chicago:

DATE: Monday, October 27, 2008
VENUE: Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel
LOCATION: 5440 North River Road , Rosemont, IL 60018
TELEPHONE: 847-671-6350
REPORT TIME: Fighter registration begins at 9 AM CT; Tryouts at 10 AM CT.

These are open casting calls, meaning anyone who feels he is qualified to become one of the 32 contestants for the show is able to audition. The release indicates, however, contestants must be over 21 and able to compete at either 170 or 185 lbs.

UFC President Dana White, majority owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, as will as Spike TV officials Craig Piligian, Brian J. Diamond and Christopher Martello will be in charge of selecting the latest MMA motley crew.

As in recent seasons, the final 32 fighters who make the cut will have to fight their way into the Ultimate Fighter house, which means that the field will essentially be reduced to 16 competitors right off the bat.

TUF 9 is expected to begin filming later this year and debut in the first quarter of 2009 on Spike TV. More details to follow.
