Jake Shields: ‘Im willing to move up in weight’ to fight Robbie Lawler

“I don’t know. I got to talk to Elite XC and find out. Like I said, I’m willing to move up in weight. I think if I moved up in weight and fought somebody like Robbie Lawler, with his caliber I think that fight would give me a lot of respect. Because right now there’s some good fighters out there, but a lot of the good 170 pounders aren’t huge names. They might be really tough, but if they’re not the huge name, it doesn’t really help my career.”

Elite XC Welterweight Champion Jake Shields mentions that he doesn’t know who his next opponent will be, but that he’s willing to move up to fight Elite XC Middleweight Champion Robbie Lawler if the promotion would allow it. There was talk of Shields fighting Matt Lindland at the now canceled Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” event this month, so he’s already been considering floating around at different weights. A champion vs. champion fight against Robbie Lawler would no doubt be a very competitive fight. Jake has won his last 11 fights in a row, including a submission over Paul “Semtex” Daley at “Heat.” And Elite XC is running out of quality welterweights to throw at him. A shot at Lawler might not be a bad idea for a future fight. “Ruthless,” however, would likely need to defeat Joey Villasenor on November 8 for that to happen.

MMA Quick Quote: Elite XCs Seth Petruzelli open to Kimbo Slice rematch

Posted: 06 Oct 2008 08:09 AM CDT

"If he ever wanted a rematch, I would 100 percent give it to him.”

– Elite XC’s “Rocky Balboa” Seth Petruzelli mentioned at the Elite XC post-fight press conference that he would gladly grant Kimbo Slice a rematch if that’s what he and the organization wanted. “The Silverback” stepped up on literally hours notice to fight Slice in the main event at Elite XC: “Heat” over the weekend when Ken Shamrock pulled out because of a cut just before showtime. At this point the long anticipated match between Slice and undefeated Team Bison member Brett “The Grim” Rogers is probably out of the question … at least for the time being. Therefore, a rematch with Petruzelli could be the most logical next step in the Kimbo Slice MMA experiment. Petruzelli added that he would definitely come into a rematch at least 20 pounds heavier than the 205.5 pounds he weighed in at for last night’s bout. Who would have thought we’d ever see Kimbo vs. Seth Petruzelli I, let alone part II?

Tito Ortiz indicates he is close to signing contract with Elite XC

Posted: 06 Oct 2008 07:59 AM CDT

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz was in Sunrise, Fla., this weekend to attend all of the festivities for Elite XC: “Heat,” attending the official weigh in and sitting cageside during the fights.

If you were watching the event on CBS or in attendance at the BankAtlantic Center, in fact, you were probably wondering the reason you kept seeing “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy.”

Well, according to Ortiz, he’s close to finally ending his search for a post-UFC employer and is about “a week away” from inking a deal with Elite XC.

The timing couldn’t be better for the organization. After the company’s biggest attraction — Kimbo Slice — lost in 14 seconds to replacement fighter Seth Petruzelli on Saturday night, the promotion may be in need of a new “go-to” guy.

And who better than the man half responsible for the highest grossing pay-per-view (PPV) in UFC history?

If Tito does indeed sign on with Pro Elite, however, he won’t be making his debut for the promotion until sometime next year. That’s because he’s having surgery on his back this week, which will keep him out of action for some time.

In 2005-2006. UFC middleweight fighter Nate Quarry underwent the same surgery to his spine and he was held out of competition for six months. Ortiz could be facing a similar road to recovery and it may be a few months into 2009 before we see him in on an Elite XC card.

He is still a big draw and can probably attract the casual fans just as well as Slice. But the fact still remains that he hasn’t won a fight in two years … and that was against a 42-year-old Ken Shamrock.

His last notable win he recorded was against current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin in April of 2006 before he was the division leader.

And even that win wasn’t without controversy.

It’s not a stretch to think Tito’s back issues could keep him out until at least April of next year. If that’s the case, by the time he actually competes under the Elite XC banner, it will have been three years since he won a fight against a credible opponent.

So the question is can Tito Ortiz still compete at a high level in this sport? It sounds like he has a lot stacked against him. Then again, Elite XC isn’t exactly known for putting its stars against anybody dangerous.

Unless you still think Ken Shamrock is “The World’s Most Dangerous Man.”

Nonetheless, there are some decent fights for Ortiz in Elite XC if he does in fact sign on. A rematch with Frank Shamrock or a light heavyweight showdown with Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante are just two examples.

Even a fight against Kimbo could be a PPV-worthy match. Regardless of skill level, that fight would more than likely sell big.

Elite XC heats up CBS ratings with Oct. 4 show at BankAtlantic Center

Posted: 05 Oct 2008 09:10 PM CDT

kimbo
Elite XC had a lot on the line last night with its third event on CBS. The original deal called for four events to air on the network television channel, but CBS retained the right to defer any of the events to its sister premium cable channel, Showtime, if so desired.

After lackluster television ratings for the second event in July, it was clear the promotion was in danger of losing event number four on CBS if numbers didn’t improve in Sunrise, Fla., with the “Heat” event at the BankAtlantic Center.

The network even helped with a strong advertising push — you couldn’t watch CBS over the last two weeks without seeing some kind of commercial for the event. Apparently the push helped … a lot.

According to TVByTheNumbers.com, Elite XC drew 4.38 million viewers last night — an increase of nearly 1.5 million from “Unfinished Business” in July.

The rating, which is the estimated percentage of the TV households in the world tuned to a program in the average minute, was at 1.8 percent. The share, which is the based on the percentage of households using televisions at that time, was at 6 percent.

Here’s the ratings/share and total number of viewers for all three CBS events for the 18-49 demographic according to the Nielsen ratings reported after each event on TVByTheNumbers.com.

May 31 “Saturday Night Fights”: 1.9/6 with 4 million viewers
July 26 “Unfinished Business”: 1.0/3 with 2.62 million viewers
October 4 “Heat”: 1.8/6 with 4.38 million viewers

All three events were beat out by “America’s Most Wanted” in the 18-49 demo. The popular FOX series has traditionally dominated that age group on Saturday nights.

The important thing here is that the numbers for the third event were much closer to the May 31 show, which was considered a big success, as opposed to the one on July 26, which was deemed a failure.

These numbers should be impressive enough for CBS to air a fourth event in 2009. However, the network may an uphill battle replicating the success now that its main attraction, Kimbo Slice, will surely be drawing less attention after his 14-second loss last night.

Time will tell.

ZST ‘SWAT! 21′ recap and quick results

Posted: 05 Oct 2008 08:42 PM CDT

By Stefan Manojlovic

On the heels of Shooto’s “Shooting Disco 6″ there was another round of Japanese mixed martial arts this weekend when ZST held their “SWAT! 21″ event at the Omori Golds Gym in Tokyo, Japan.

The event saw five of the nine fights ending by way of submission, as well as one brutal knockout, one no contest and two inevitable draws.

Because ZST bouts are not judged, any fight that goes the distance is automatically ruled a draw.

Shunichi Shimizu was probably the most impressive fighter of the evening, armbarring Tetsuya Nishi early in the second round and winning his sixth win in a row.

Keep an eye on the surging Shimizu.

Tokuaki Ninomiya pulled a Sagat with a vicious tiger knee to the face of Hiroyuki Naito at 3:57 in the first round. Brutal to say the least.

The ghost of Cro Cop was in the house as Shingo Matsuda versus Takaichi Hirayama ended early after Matsuda was blasted with an accidental low blow only 59 seconds into the first round. He could not continue and the bout was ruled a no contest.

Ichiro Kojima beat Kendo Koda late into the first round via rear naked choke. He sunk it in with just eleven seconds left in the round and Koda was forced to tap. Kojima needed this win after a frustrating draw in his last bout at SWAT! ‘In FACE Volume 1′ against Ryo Nakajima two months ago.

Another impressive submission came from Shinya Kurosawa who locked in a triangle choke on Kota Higashitani in the first round. This was Kurosawa’s second submission win in as many chances. He made his debut last June at ZST SWAT! 18 where he also impressively finished Keizo Hisamanto in the first round via rear naked choke.

Here are the ZST SWAT! 21 complete results:

Shunichi Shimizu (13-3-4) defeated Tetsuya Nishi (2-5-6) by armbar (0:45-R2)
Kohei Kuraoka (5-3) defeated Yoshitaka Abe (2-2-1) by rear naked choke (4:44-R1)
Ichiro Kojima (5-5-3) defeated Kendo Koda (1-1) by rear naked choke (4:49-R1)
Shingo Matsuda (3-8-1, 1 NC) fought Takaichi Hirayama (7-10-6, 1 NC) to a no contest (0:59-R1)
Toshihiro Shimizu (3-5-2) defeated Tetsuya Fusano (1-1-1) by rear naked choke (1:32-R2)
Shinya Kurosawa (2-0) defeated Kota Higashitani (1-1) by triangle choke (3:21-R1)
Masaya Doi (3-2-2) battled Kazuto Nakamura (1-0-1) to a draw
Shigeru Naruse (0-0-1) battled Makoto Hikita (0-1-1) to a draw
Tokuaki Ninomiya (3-3) defeated Hiroyuki Naito (1-2) by KO (3:57-R1)

Elite XC: ‘Heat’ attracts nearly 10,000 fans at BankAtlantic Center

Posted: 05 Oct 2008 07:25 PM CDT

In July at the second Elite XC event on CBS in Stockton, Calif., the promotion had a difficult time selling enough tickets to fill up the relatively small Stockton Arena.

So much so that 3,701 of the total 6,572 people who attended “Unfinished Business” on July 26 received their tickets on the house.

The organization couldn’t afford to have an empty arena being shown on CBS for one of its prime time events and risk looking bad not only to the viewers at home, but also to the network executives. So, they were forced to literally give away more than half of the seats that were filled.

It was almost a given that they would produce better ticket sales in South Florida with hometown favorite Kimbo Slice main eventing. In fact, the demand for seats grew so high that additional sections were opened with extra $30 tickets two days prior to the event.

The final numbers revealed that 7,723 tickets were sold for “Heat” and the company more than tripled its live gate, pulling in a total of $826,433. “Unfinished Business” only managed to bring in $269,000.

The total live attendance at the Bank Atlantic Center last night was 9,414 — nearly a 50 percent increase from Stockton.

Even though the main event didn’t necessarily turn out as planned, at least Elite XC can hang its hat on this as a success.

Shooto ‘Shooting Disco 6′ recap and quick results

Posted: 05 Oct 2008 01:15 PM CDT

By Stefan Manojlovic

In the middle of all the EliteXC post-fight hubbub, Shooto’s “Shooting Disco 6″ took place earlier today at Shinyuku FACE in Tokyo, Japan.

In the main event, bantamweight fighter Ryuichi Miki scored a majority decision win by dominating his opponent Jin Akimoto in all three rounds. Akimoto hasn’t won a fight in the last 6 years, when he submitted Alfonso Alcarez via kneebar back at Shooto Treasure Hunt 6 in 2002.

Akimoto is in his late thirties and may be at a career crossroads after this latest defeat.

Daiji Takahashi had to settle for a draw against Seiji Otsuka. Takashi was coming off a two-year layoff and a four-fight losing streak. No question both fighters were disappointed with the outcome of the fight.

Taiki Tsuchiya had a highlight-reel stoppage over Daisuke Matsumoto with just three seconds left in the first round. After a dropping him with a right, he finished Matsumoto with some devastating shots on the ground to secure the victory.

Nothing like waiting until the last second.

Another fight ended in the first round when Takeshi Sato managed to get a submission win over Nozomi Otsuka via rear-naked choke. This was just his second fight and first win ever, having fought to a draw in his debut at Kingdom of Grapple 2007 against Hikaru Sato.

Guy Delameau made his debut a successful one against fellow rookie Hisaki Hiraishi. Delameau scored a unanimous decision win with a strong combination of knees and punches.

In the Rookie Tournament Semifinals, Kosuke Eda put a stop to rising star Haruo Ochi with a unanimous decision victory. Mikiyomi Yamagami on the other hand wasn’t leaving anything to the judges after brutally knocking out Yusuke Sato a mere 18 seconds into round two. An impressive win for just his second fight in mixed martial arts.

Here are the Shooting Disco 6 complete results:

Ryuichi Miki (7-2-3) defeated Jin Akimoto (10-12-4) via majority decision
Taisuke Okuno (6-2-1) defeated Yoichiro Sato (1-1-1) via unanimous decision
Daiji Takahashi (6-10-3) battled Seiji Otsuka (8-8-5) to a draw
Sakae Kasuya (4-3-3) defeated Hidenori Nishino (1-3-1) via unanimous decision
Ayumu Shioda (4-6) defeated Kenji Hosoya (2-4) via unanimous decision
Taiki Tsuchiya (2-1) defeated Daisuke Matsumoto (3-5) via TKO (4:57-R1)
Takeshi Sato (1-0-1) defeated Nozomi Otsuka (1-1) by rear-naked choke (2:41-R1)
Guy Delameau (1-0) defeated Hisaki Hiraishi (0-1) via unanimous decision

Bantamweight Rookie Tournament Semifinal
Mikiyomi Yamagami (2-0) defeated Yusuke Sato (1-1) by KO (0:18-R2)

Flyweight Rookie Tournament Semifinal
Fumihiro Kitahara (3-0) defeated Hiroaki Ijima (1-1) via unanimous decision

Featherweight Rookie Tournament Semifinal
