Dana White offers Kimbo Slice a spot on UFCs The Ultimate Fighter

Quoteworthy:

“What has the guy done to deserve to be in the UFC? Nothing. I don’t consider him a real athlete or anything. He won’t win The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). The offer is out there if he wants to take it and he won’t win it. I might [put a heavyweight show together just for him].”

UFC President Dana White answers a question at the UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” post-fight press conference about the chances of Kimbo Slice fighting inside the Octagon someday soon. Slice — a Miami street brawler turned mixed martial artist — is now out of a job because of the collapse of Elite XC. And while he may still be raw in terms of all around skills, Slice has huge drawing power — people flock to their televisions or computers to watch him do his thing. Therefore, it’s safe to say that if Slice does take up White on his offer that Spike TV ratings would likely go through the roof. But locking Kimbo in a house with several up-and-comers in their twenties for six weeks doesn’t ever seem like it would happen. Who knows, but the offer is apparently Slice’s for the taking to perhaps prove White wrong and earn a UFC contract.

UFC Quick Quote: Anderson Silva was scared to exchange

Posted: 26 Oct 2008 10:55 PM CDT

I was in the best shape of my life, I was ready to go and I think that I proved to everybody that this guy’s not unbeatable. I think I fucked him up really bad. My game plan was good and I think he was scared to exchange with me. I received all his best punches and all his best knees and I was still there.

-UFC middleweight contender Patrick Cote shares his inebriated thoughts with MMACanada.net on his performance against Anderson Silva at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. “The Predator” was defeated via TKO after re-aggravating a previous knee injury that prevented him from continuing, thus ending a rather bizarre affair that saw “The Spider” possessed with happy feet for two rounds, engaging only in short bursts and timed intervals.

Pancrase ‘Shining 9′ results and quick recap

Posted: 26 Oct 2008 10:07 PM CDT

More Japanese mixed martial arts took place this past Sunday when Pancrase held its ‘Shining 9′ event at the Differ Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

The focal point of the event was the battle between Marlon Sandro and Masaya Takita for the vacant King Of Pancrase featherweight title.

The division was revised earlier this year to meet the standards of the unified rules of mixed martial arts, changing the weight class under 141lbs to a set range of 135lbs-145lbs.

The fight went the distance and Sandro was able to pull off a unanimous decision win, keeping his undefeated record intact and now standing at very impressive 12-0. He also gained the King Of Pancrase featherweight title for his efforts.

Will he ever be stopped?

In lightweight action, Yukio Sakaguchi destroyed Yuichi Ikari with some vicious shots just 21 seconds into the first round. If you blinked, you would have missed it.

Another fight ending in similar fashion was the flyweight bout between Takuya Eizumi and Takayuki Hirayasu. Eizumi was able to rain down some bombs to the face of Hirayasu, forcing the referee to intervene when Hirayasu could no longer intelligently defend himself.

The welterweight tournament semifinals also took place with Hiroyuki Nozawa and Tomoyoshi Iwamiya both earning decision wins. They will now face off against each other in the finals sometime this December.

The winner of that fight will than get the opportunity to face current interim King Of Pancrase welterweight champion Takuya Wada in Spring of 2009.

Here are the Pancrase ‘Shining 9′ complete results:

Main Card:
Kenji Arai (13-12-3) fought Tashiro Akai (9-5-8) to a draw
Takuya Wada (17-8-9) fought Masahiro Toryu (6-3-4) to a draw
Yukio Sakaguchi (3-3) defeated Yuichi Ikari (10-5-4) via KO (0:21-R1)

Takuya Eizumi (3-1) defeated Takayuki Hirayasu (1-3) by TKO (1:55-R2)
Wataru Takahashi (6-10-4) fought Hiroshi Tomita (0-0-1) to a draw

Featherweight King of Pancrase:
Marlon Sandro (12-0) defeated Masaya Takita (9-10-2) by unanimous decision

Welterweight Tournament SemiFinals:
Hiroyuki Nozawa (6-3-2) defeated Asaki Honda (4-3-1) by unanimous decision
Tomoyoshi Iwamiya (5-7) defeated Kiichi Kunimoto (5-3-2) by unanimous decision

Shooto ‘Gig Central Volume 16′ results and quick recap

Posted: 26 Oct 2008 10:05 PM CDT

Shooto hosted volume 16 of its ‘Gig Central’ series on Sunday at the Tokai TV Telepia Hall in Nagoya, Japan.

The main event saw Yoshitaro Niimi battle Xavier Lucas for the vacant Shooto Pacific Rim Middleweight Title. Before the fight Niimi was ranked #1 by Shooto in the Pacific Rim division and Lucas was ranked #3.

Those rankings are sure to change after an impressive performance from the Australian middleweight scored him a decision win and the Shooto title.

In women’s action, Mutsumi Kasai pulled off yet another submission victory after armbarring Kinuka Sasaki in the second round. This marks Kasai’s third victory in a row, all of which have come by way of tap out.

Sasaki’s record now stands at 2-7. Ouch! At one point she had lost six in a row. Let’s hope things can change for her otherwise she may need to look for another profession.

Naohiro Mizuno earned himself a spot in the finals of the Shooto Lightweight Rookie Tournament when he bested Mitsuru Kobayshi via unanimous decision. He will now face off against undefeated rising star Issei Tamura sometime in the near future.

In the Light Heavyweight Rookie Tournament, Makoto Maeda was able to give Naoji Mikoshiba his first ever loss when he pounded him out and got the TKO win in round two.

Here are the Shooto ‘Gig Central Volume 16′ complete results:

Main Card:
Kenichi Hattori (6-3-3) defeated Masato Fujiwara (5-11-5) by majority decision

Mutsumi Kasai (3-0) defeated Kinuka Sasaki (2-7) via armbar (3:53-R2)

Pacific Rim Middleweight Title Fight:
Xavier Lucas (5-1-1) defeated Yoshitaro Niimi (4-2-1) by majority decision

Lightweight Rookie Tournament Semi-Final:

Strikeforce on NBC posts record ratings

Strikeforce on NBC ratings

One mixed martial arts promotion called it quits last week while another is enjoying record ratings on network television.

And it isn’t the UFC.

The San Jose-based mixed martial arts promotion Strikeforce posted its highest ratings ever last Saturday night when 1.1 Million viewers tuned in to watch “Strikeforce on NBC.”

The October 18 episode featured the light heavyweight rematch between Trevor Prangley and Anthony “A-Train” Ruiz from last month’s “Strikeforce at the Mansion II” event at the infamous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

The thirty-minute program, which airs every Saturday following “Poker After Dark,” debuted on April 12 of this year and has consistently received solid ratings, going as high as 949,000 viewers on May 9.

This latest spike in ratings couldn’t have come at a better time and should alleviate a lot of anxiety for Strikeforce executives, especially in the wake of the recent implosion of is frequent co-promoter EliteXC.

Strikeforce Founder and CEO, Scott Coker had this to say about the program’s success:

“It's obviously great to see our product growing substantially on the network, but it's more than just that. The consistently strong ratings we've seen are a sign that the sport of MMA is flourishing and continuing to gain new fans as its visibility grows on national television."

This success could eventually lead to NBC airing live, prime-time events similar to what CBS did with EliteXC. If so, the responsibility will rest on Strikeforce to make sure it doesn’t make the same mistakes its predecessor did.

Time will tell.

In the meantime, this week’s episode features the lightweight showdown between two of the company’s best 155 pounders, Josh "The Punk" Thomson (16-2) and Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez (14-2), which took place at San Jose's HP Pavilion on June 27th.

Sean Sherk reinvents himself at UFC 90

Quoteworthy:

“This was a great fight and a great opportunity for me to come out and show some stuff that people haven’t seen before. I want to show everyone that I’m growing as a fighter and show everyone that I’m three dimensional. I though I did that tonight. And hopefully I get to fight the winner of Joe [Stevenson] and Kenny [Florian] next. That’s my goal.”

At the ripe old age of 35, former lightweight champion Sean Sherk talks after defeating Tyson Griffin via unanimous decision at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” last night about the improvements he has made to his all around mixed martial arts game. Primarily known for his overwhelming wrestling, Sherk demonstrated a much improved striking attack and was not as one dimensional, earning him and Griffin the “Fight of the Night.” It was a match up that many fans predicted going in would be dull because of the wrestling backgrounds of both fighters. That simply was not the case.
