Day of Reckoning: Andrei Arlovski vs Fedor Emelianenko

Posted: 11 Oct 2008 02:06 AM CDT

It’s official.

Affliction MMA has confirmed with MMARated.com that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski will face current WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’ in late January 2009.

The dream match that most fans have fantasized about for years is finally here.

Arlovski (14-5) was last seen devouring IFL veteran Roy “Big Country” Nelson at EliteXC ‘Heat’ on October 4. After losing back-to-back fights in the UFC against Tim Sylvia, Arlovski has gone on to win five straight with four (T)KO’s.

He is a superior striker and one of the most athletic heavyweights in combat sports today.

He’ll be challenging what may be the finest mixed martial artist on the planet in Emelianenko. “The Last Emperor” is a mind-boggling 28-1 and was the last man to hold the PRIDE Heavyweight strap before the promotions untimely demise.

Emelianenko last competed at Affliction ‘Banned’ back in July when he submitted former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia is just 36 seconds.

This will be Emelianenko’s biggest and most anticipated fight since his battle with Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic back at PRIDE Final Conflict 2005.

“Day of Reckoning” was originally scheduled to be held in the Fall of 2008 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas until slow ticket sales and a lukewarm response prompted a postponement. Since then, Affliction has entered into a new partnership with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

Not to worry, “Day of Reckoning” will not feature any boxing matches according to Affliction Vice-President Tom Atencio.

Exact details of the date, location and main card fights are expected to be released sometime next week. Not that they’re overly important at this stage. After all, we’re getting Arlovski vs. Emelianenko.

What (or who) else matters?

SHO XC 9 MAIN CARD RECAPS:

Dave “Pee Wee” Herman (11-0) vs. Kerry “The Meat Truck” Schall (21-10)

Fight recap: “Pee Wee” surprisingly came out trying to use his legs with kicks and knees. He got a little too comfortable at one point and Schall drilled him with a huge right hand. Apparently that woke Herman up, and he came right back at Schall with more viscious knees and strikes. One of the knees hit Schall in the groin and he immediately fell to the mat. The referee missed the illegal shot - surprise surprise - and Herman pounced on him and pounded him out. Herman probably would have scored the win regardless, but hopefully this ref doesn’t get anymore main event work - or any work for that matter - until he can get some more training. He made Steve Mazz look like Big John tonight. Anyway, another solid win for “Pee Wee” puts him right at the top of the list for a shot at Antonio Silva’s heavyweight crown.

Final result: Dave “Pee Wee” Herman defeats Kerry Schall via technical knockout in round one

Anthony “The Recipe” Lapsley (12-3) vs. Mike Stumpf (8-4)

Fight recap: Lapsley came out looking to show off his Muay Thai skills in the first round. He landed some big knees and kicks before finally getting Stumpf to the ground where he worked some nasty ground and pound to easily take the first round. He worked an identical gameplan in the second and third rounds en route to a majority decision win. It should have been a unanimous decision, but somehow one of the judges scored the bout a draw. Some questionable scoring there. Regardless, Lapsley got the nod. Stumpf took some hard shots in the fight and proved to be a game competitor, but Lapsley’s aggressive style and overall athleticism was too much. Lapsley was very impressive in the win despite not getting the finish. Expect to see a lot more of him on future Elite XC fight cards.

Final result: Anthony “The Recipe” Lapsley defeated Mike Stumpf via majority decision

Jason Guida (17-17) vs. Mamed “Cannibal” Khalidov (14-3-1)

Fight recap: Khalidov attempted a beautiful rolling knee bar attempt out of a standing clinch to start the fight. Guida escaped and tried to stick to his gameplan of takedowns and ground and pound, but Khalidov kept pulling rabbits out of his hat with high level moves like spinning back fists, roundhouse upkicks, back kicks, and plenty of knees, elbows, and punches to boot. The terrible refereeing on the night continued in this match as Guida took elbows to the back of the head that went unnoticed by the official - one of which cut him in the first round. At one point Guida’s mouth piece went flying, and somehow the referee couldn’t find it. Guida was exhausted, and refused to use a different one, probably because he was trying to get his breath back. It was very odd to say the least. Eventually the official located the missing mouth guard, and within seconds of the restart Khalidov was all over Guida again with an array of unanswered shots. Guida wasn’t fighting back, so the fight was stopped. Amidst all of the confusion, Khalidov displayed an excellent set of skills in the dominating win.

Final result: Mamed “Cannibal” Khalidov defeated Jason Guida via technical knockout (strikes) in round two

Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (21-3) vs. Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (11-4)

Fight recap: As expected McDaniel took the fight to the mat right away. Shlemenko immediately looked to capitalize from his back with a kimura, but the crafty McDaniel worked his way out of the hold. Once he freed his arm he took complete control of the fight with dominate positions on the ground and a slew of submission attempts. Near the end of the round the Russian made his way back to his feet and with seconds remaining landed a gorgeous flying knee to McDaniel’s body. McDaniel fell right to the mat, and he was in obvious pain as the bell rang. The ref looked confused and thought McDaniel had suffered a groin shot, but replays showed the knee hit squarely on the body. McDaniel was given the chance, but was not able to continue and Shlemenko grabbed the knockout win.

Final result: Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko defeats Robert McDaniel via technical knockout (knee to the body) in round one.

Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm (7-0) vs. Rafaello “Trator” Olivera (5-0)

Fight recap: Oliviera came out of the gates super aggressive. He scored a takedown right away and was able to work some strong ground and pound along with numerous submission attempts from there. Beerbohm recovered late in the round, and turned the tides a little bit by scoring a few slams of his own. He took a top position and landed a nasty elbow that cut the Brazilian wide open. Oliveira made it through the round, but the cut was way too deep for the cageside doctor to allow him to continue. After the fight Beerbohm called out the winner of Diaz and Alvarez saying it didn’t matter which one he faced because he’d beat either. Some pretty ambitious comments coming from a guy who just won a fight on a cut after not doing much else the entire match.

Final result: Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm defeats Rafaello Oliveira via technical knockout (cut) in round one

Next up for Elite XC is “A Night of Champions” on November 8 on Showtime featuring at least two world title fights. See you there.

WEC tickets Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Las Vegas Dec. 3 now available

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 03:02 PM CDT

WEC 37 tickets for “Torres vs. Tapia” are now on sale for the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 3.

Tickets, which range in price from just $75 to a modest $225, can be purchased through StubHub.com (Note: StubHub often has seats available even if the event is "sold out")

The main event of the evening features perhaps the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, Miguel Torres, defending his 135-pound bantamweight title against the undefeated Manny Tapia.

Torres — a Carlson Gracie protégé with sick Muay Thai skills — is in the midst of breaking out into the mainstream despite years of dominating his competition in smaller shows throughout the nation. He submitted Chase Beebe earlier this year to capture the WEC bantamweight title.

Tapia is a former King of the Cage star who has kept his perfect record intact since joining the WEC with two exciting wins over
Brandon Foxworth and Antonio Banuelos. “The Mangler” often tends to live up to his nickname, preferring to stand and bang it out rather than take his fights to the ground.

He has not seen any action since February because of a knee injury that has kept him on the sidelines.

WEC 37 will air on the VERSUS network, beginning at 9 p.m. ET on fight night. To check out the latest fight card for the event click here.

Jorge Gurgel vs Aaron Riley UFC 91 fight likely to be announced soon

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 02:56 PM CDT

MMAmania.com has confirmed that Jorge Gurgel (12-4) is slated to take on Aaron Riley (26-10-1) in a lightweight bout on the UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” under card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15.

Gurgel — a former contestant on season two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) — has underwhelmed since his brief stint on the show. He has lost two of his last three and three of six all-time inside the Octagon.

The black belt serves as the head Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor at his successful training facility, JG Mixed Martial Arts, in Ohio that has some top fighters such as Rich Franklin and Dustin Hazelett on its roster.

So it came as quite a surprise when Cole Miller slapped on a submission to finish Gurgel in his most recent performance after an exciting three-round tussle.

It was a devastating loss, but he will have to use it as inspiration and rebound convincingly to demonstrate that he belongs in the crowded UFC 155-pound division.

That, however, will not be very easy against a grizzled and well traveled veteran like Riley who has competed in Pride FC, Bodog and the International Fight League (IFL), among others.

Riley has taken on some of the best in the business and sports losses to Robbie Lawler, Spencer Fisher, Chris Lytle and Eddie Alvarez. And even though he did not come out victorious in those contests, the experience factor alone makes him a dangerous opponent.

His losses to Lawler and Fisher were under the UFC banner, dating back several years. Riley is currently riding a two fight win streak and most recently competed in September.

UFC 91 features the main event between heavyweight champion Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar. In addition, lightweights Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson will do battle for the right to be considered the top title contender in the 155-pound division in the co-feaured fight of the evening.

Brian Stann scratched from UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” with foot injury

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 02:51 PM CDT

Missing from the official announcement just yesterday about additional details for UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” was former WEClight heavyweight champion Brian Stann.

That’s because the “All American” was penciled in to fight the man whotook his title, Steve Cantwell, on the main card at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C., on Wednesday, December 10.

The 205-pound match up was supposed to be the first casualty of the promotion’s recent division downsizing (Zuffa is the parent company of the UFC and WEC), as well as a fantastic opportunity for Stann — a former Marine and decorated Iraq war veteran — to strut his stuff in front of his supportive peers.

However, Stann sustained a foot injury while training, according to sources, and will be unable to compete at the military-inspired event. It is more than likely a disappointing blow for the Silver Star winner.

In addition to fighting in front of the troops, Stann was also out to settle a score with Cantwell — the pair have split their two previous bouts and a third would have provided a necessary conclusion to the rivalry.

It will have to wait. In the meantime, we’re told the promotion is currently on the hunt to find an opponent for Cantwell. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com to see if that happens in the near future.

Remember that the fantastic welterweight match up between Josh Koscheck and Yoshiyuki Yoshida will headline the three-hour Spike TV special, which will begin to air at 8 p.m. ET.

Keep in mind that the special event is designed to raise funds for the construction of The National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a treatment center for Armed Forces personnel who have experienced traumatic brain injuries.

Therefore, donations are accepted and encouraged.

No cuts, no glory: Lean Stack drops the weight without the wait

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 12:00 PM CDT

In the old days, making weight for a fight meant spending the last twenty-four hours prior to weigh-ins performing all sorts of wonderful tasks like dressing yourself in a sausage casing and dragging a 200 lb exercise bike into the sauna.

After all, why burn fat and retain lean muscle with little-to-no headaches when you can bring your kidneys to the brink of failure and spend every waking minute spitting into a Dixie cup?

I know the macho among us will scowl and shrug it off as one of those manly rituals we’re supposed to accept unconditionally, but who wants to show up for a fight looking like Trevor Reznik?

Or even worse, those poor unfortunate souls who rehydrate too fast and swell up like Violet Beauregard?

Personally, when it comes to tasks that require repetition and effort, I prefer to let technology do the work for me.

That is why I own a remote control, a Roomba 560 and of course Feel It! Nutrition’s Lean Stack.

Lean Stack was designed with the weight-conscious fighter in mind. I’ve always competed at light heavyweight and normally walk around at or near 215 lbs. Like most competitors, I would start to drastically alter my diet before weigh-ins and torture (and bore) myself on the treadmill until the scale began to drop.

Unfortunately a lot of my and size and strength dropped as well.

Then I was introduced to Lean Stack and put it to use about a month out of competition. Two days before the fight I weighed in at 204 lbs. No sauna, no crash diet and no treadmill. I was already at my target weight but more importantly I was ripped and at full strength.

I didn’t change the way I trained, I changed the way I prepared. Once again I let technology do the work for me.

Part of the appeal of Lean Stack was the fact that I could get everything in one shot without roaming around GNC like a bewildered tourist. The Feel It! Nutrition experts have already done the research and assembled the most comprehensive stack for burning fat and retaining lean muscle.

Lean Stack consists of the following cutting-edge supplements:

Strength Prohormone: LG Sciences Methyl Masterdrol V2 (90 Capsules)
Testosterone Booster: LG Sciences Formadrol Extreme (60 Capsules)
Protein Powder: BSN, Inc. Syntha-6 (2.91 lb tub)
Thermogenic: BSN, Inc. Atro-Phex (98 Capsules)
Antioxidant: TWINLAB Alpha Lipoic Acid (60 Capsules)

If you’re looking to cut weight prior to competition without jeopardizing your strength and lean muscle, or if you just want to shed those few extra pounds that have survived your onslaught of physical exertion, give Lean Stack a try.

It could even affect the outcome of your next fight. Who has the advantage: The fighter doing a light workout the morning of the weigh-ins or the fighter who is shriveling up inside a sauna with just a prayer and a rubber suit?

Get lean. Get Lean Stack.

Head over to the Feel It! Nutrition website by clicking here and be sure to stay on the lookout for their upcoming breakthrough in weight loss technology with ABSOLVE, a topical weight loss solution that will change the way fighters and athletes think about cutting weight.

Petruzelli comments; fan outcry prompt preliminary investigation of EliteXC follwoing Oct. 4 event

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 11:59 AM CDT

I’ll say one thing, Seth Petruzelli sure knows how to show his appreciation for getting the chance to fight in the main event on network television.

After dropping EliteXC main attraction Kimbo Slice in just fourteen seconds at Saturday Night Fights on October 4, “The Silverback” went on Orlando’s Real Radio 104.1 and claimed EliteXC officials instructed him on how to approach the fight, with a financial benefit for keeping the fight standing.

From Petruzelli:

“My original plan was to throw out push kicks, have him think that I'm gonna throw them more, and then to shoot in on him, obviously. But the promoters kind of hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him. They didn't want me to take him down, let's just put it that way. It was worth my while to try to stand up and punch with him."

Those comments caused an uproar in the fight community as fans cried foul over the possibility of EliteXC tampering with fights to protect top draw Kimbo Slice. Enough of an uproar to prompt Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) to open a preliminary investigation into the matter according to ESPN.com.

Unfortunately for EliteXC, then memories of Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson back on May 31 are still fresh in the minds of a lot of fans, where some very questionable officiating, scoring and promoter antics saw Slice win in controversial fashion.

Still, the investigation may be nothing more than a formality. Jennifer Meale, Communications Director for the DBPR is already downplaying their involvement:

“While the Department of Business and Professional Regulation doesn’t have any reason to believe there was a problem with the Slice-Petruzelli fight, given the interest in it, the Department has begun a preliminary investigation to thoroughly review the circumstances of the fight.”

Jeremy Lappen, Chief of Fight Operations for EliteXC, doesn’t seem too concerned about the investigation, despite the damage an accusation like this carries in the court of public opinion. Not just to EliteXC, but to the credibility of mixed martial arts worldwide.

From Lappen:

“We were not trying to protect Kimbo. He had been training to fight a guy in Shamrock who has a better ground game than Seth. If we were trying to protect Kimbo we would have sent him home. We put him in a dangerous fight.”

Petruzelli has since recanted his position and claims that his original statement was misconstrued. Still, whether the investigation finds something of merit or just simply goes away, EliteXC once again walks away with an air of distrust.

Not exactly the best way to save what some insiders are calling a sinking ship.

Fomer UFC and PRIDE punching bag Joe Son charged with gang rape

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 11:18 AM CDT

One-time UFC lovable loser Joseph Hyungmin Son (0-4) has been charged with multiple felonies after DNA evidence tied him to a brutal gang rape that took place in 1990 according to the good folks over at TMZ.

Son, also known to non-MMA fans as “Random Task” from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, is probably best known in the fight community for having his balls demolished by Keith Hackney back at UFC 4 en route to a first round submission loss.

After pleading guilty to felony vandalism in May of 2008, Son was required to submit a DNA sample as part of his guilty plea. That sample connected him to an unsolved gang rape that took place over 18 years ago.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, the victim was pistol-whipped, raped, threatened with death and penetrated by a firearm before eventually being blindfolded and released naked.

Son is being held on $1 million bail and has been charged with the following:

-Five felony counts of rape
-Two felony counts of forcible sodomy
-Two felony counts of sodomy in concert by force
-Seven felony counts of forcible oral copulation
-One felony count of sexual penetration by foreign object by force.

If convicted, Son faces a maximum sentence of 275 years to life.

Frank Shamrock: Kimbo Slice should have fought me - not a ‘Nobody’

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 10:38 AM CDT

Props: Sherdog.com

"I think it was a mistake to not let me fight [Kimbo Slice]. When I realized we would have to cancel the show, I said, 'Look, I'll fight the guy’. You know, it's a great story — little brother steps into the spot, comes out of the booth. It's very compelling, but we need a fight to happen that's compelling. That went around for hours. Then I put my shirt on and went to work. No one committed to it, so I just kept talking. Kimbo is great - great for ratings. But Kimbo fighting a star, a superstar, somebody who's going to elevate him or knock him down in a good way, that's what we needed that night. We didn't need a nobody to beat Kimbo. Everybody knows that Kimbo is not very good. He hasn't had time to mature. He's a new guy."

– Former Strikeforce middleweight champion and current EliteXC commentator Frank Shamrock sounds off on EliteXC’s “50-million dollar mistake” of letting Seth Petruzelli replace the brittle Ken Shamrock against main attraction Kimbo Slice at Saturday Night Fights on October 4. Slice was stopped in just 14 seconds by a fighter that Shamrock feels has no commercial value or appeal - thus diminishing the aura of Slice in every way.
