UFC 90 bonuses and awards for ‘Silva vs Cote’ PPV fights

Posted: 26 Oct 2008 01:48 AM CDT

UFC 90: "Silva vs Cote" from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois has come to a close.

The highly anticipated main event of the evening between Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote took home “Injury of the Night”, unfortunately that award offers nothing but higher premiums on health insurance.

While Silva was an early favorite for knockout of the night, that honor went to UFC newcomer Junior Dos Santos for his first round dental work on very-heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum.

Lightweights Sean Sherk and Tyson Griffin snagged “Fight of the Night” for their rock-em, sock-em three-round brawl, which "The Muscle Shark" took in the end via unanimous decision.

Another lightweight who took home some greenbacks (but didn’t make the televised broadcast) was Spencer Fisher. “The King” locked in “Submission of the Night” with his third round triangle choke.

Overall, it was a decent card with a very indecent main event. Still, the fighters honored below definitely deserved a little extra cash for their outstanding performances.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 90:

Knockout of the Night — Junior Dos Santos

Submission of the Night – Spencer Fisher

Fight of the Night — Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin

Each fighter received $65,000 for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which is $15,000 higher than the $40,000 awards issued last week at UFC 89.

UFC 90 recap and final thoughts

Posted: 26 Oct 2008 01:26 AM CDT

UFC 90: "Silva vs Cote" took place earlier this evening live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.

What was shaping up to be a solid overall show was marred by an unfortunate injury in the main event after Patrick “The Predator” Cote had a case of separation anxiety in his right knee.

Action was halted when an ACL tear prevented Cote from continuing, thus ending a fairly bizarre fight that no doubt left many fans at home and in attendance largely unsatisfied.

Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva spent most of the two and a half rounds juking-and-jiving like a funked-out Bruce Lee, choosing to engage only in short bursts and timed intervals.

I’m not entirely sure what the strategy was. Perhaps it was a chance to give fans their money’s worth by prolonging the fight, or maybe “The Spider” was merely toying with Cote before turning up the heat.

Whatever the case was, his Machida-like approach cost fans a satisfactory ending. With only minor flashes of the dominance we’ve come to expect from Silva, Cote was never really given a fair chance to prove his mettle.

That’s not to suggest Cote would have prevailed, but in the end fans got neither a fight nor a finish.

We didn’t get a finish in the Thiago Alves vs Josh Koscheck match, but we definitely got a fight. “The Pitbull” dominated the wrestling phenom from start to finish with a series of devastating leg kicks and crisp punches.

Koscheck’s wrestling was not a factor at all against Alves, and got dropped on more than one occasion. Still, it’s hard not to admire the display of heart and determination of Koscheck, who (mutual eye pokes notwithstanding) never once backed down or refused to engage.

In the night’s best WTF? moment, Kos tried to give Alves a congratulatory hug at the end of the third round and got taken down for his efforts. I’m not sure if Alves just stumbled or didn’t hear the bell, but Koscheck’s expression was priceless.

Speaking of bells being rung, Fabricio Werdum is probably still shaking the cobwebs from his head after he introduced his face to a Dos Santos uppercut. The portly heavyweight was on queer street after the UFC rookie made him pay for ducking his head midway through the first.

After a loss of this magnitude, the chance of Werdum getting his heavyweight title shot in Spring of 2009 is about as likely as site captain MMAmania getting his audition tape returned from the producers of Little People, Big World.

While it’s a little early to start revving the engine in the Dos Santos War Wagon (see Alexander, Houston), this win is sure to get him back on TV in the near future.

It never hurts to expand the division, especially the way heavyweights come and go in the UFC.

Gray Maynard looked visibly disappointed after his win over Rich Clementi. “The Bully” may have lived up to his nickname, but his inability to finish the wily veteran prompted boos from the audience, who apparently have no interest in anything that doesn’t end in a beheading.

“No Love” did what he could but really had “No Answer” for Maynard’s wrestling. Credit to Joe Rogan for calling out the referee, who may have been one or two “C’mon guys! Let’s work!” away from doing some booing himself.

Speaking of booing, Sean Sherk was not getting any props for taking a unanimous decision win over Tyson Griffin.

The two had a hard fought, back-and-forth battle that was very close to call, but Sherk was the busier of the two, doing enough to rack up the points and take home the win.

It’s important to note that Tyson Griffin is only 24 and his only two losses were close decisions. Expect this guy to be a major force in the lightweight division when he hits his prime.

No matter.

What will be talked about going forward is the ending of the main event between Patrick Cote and Anderson Silva. Mike Goldberg, aside from his asinine commentary regarding Gray Maynard’s Michigan sweater, thinks Patrick Cote deserves a rematch.

What say you?

UFC Quick Quote: Boo, Josh Koscheck, BOO!

Posted: 25 Oct 2008 12:47 PM CDT

koscheck

“I honestly don't really care if the fans boo me. This is a business, and if I cared what everybody else was thinking, it would take away from my goals. And my goal is to become the UFC welterweight champion. I'm not going to let a bunch of booing people decide that. I'm going to decide that myself….. For me, it's a matter of getting that PR and getting my name out there and outsmarting everybody. I can tell you this, they can keep booing, and that's fine. But when they meet me and get to know who I am, they're going to fall in love and jump to the other side. I can guarantee you that…. My last two fights [both wins] have been pretty good, and guess what, I got booed both times. One was a knockout and one was one of the bloodiest fights in UFC history. Let's hope I can change all of their perceptions of me tomorrow night.”

– Josh Koscheck wants fans to have a reaction, whether it is for or against him. He said as much in the “UFC Countdown” special and then again in this interview with the Chicago Sun-Times. If the UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” weigh-in is any indication than consider it mission accomplished — the boo birds were out in force at the Chicago Theatre. It’s interesting that despite his most recent performances, including going three solid rounds with Georges St. Pierre, kicking Dustin Hazelett’s head off and slaughtering Chris Lytle, as well as stepping up on less than two weeks notice to fight a very dangerous Thiago Alves, that more fans are not coming around sooner. Silly. Keep on trucking, Kos.

Patrick Cote is consistently confident and …

Quoteworthy:

“I ain’t scared of him and I like my chances against him…. We’re going to push the pace and we’re going to give him a real war…. I do this sport to be world champ…. I can’t wait to unleash the fury and just be the next champion of the world.”

Patrick Cote has been making seemingly crazy statements like this for the past two months leading up to his fight with 185-pound champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25. He has not wavered. It’s quite a strategy to adopt, considering the highlight reel track record that “The Spider” boasts against those foolish enough to simply stand and trade. So since it is finally fight day we ask our readers: Is Patrick Cote bluffing, brilliant or braindead?
