Joe Riggs vs Luke Stewart Strikeforce fight set for San Jose Nov. 21

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 08:28 AM CDT

Joe “Diesel” Riggs (28-11) will make his return to the welterweight division on November 21 at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, Calif., when he takes on fast rising jiu-jitsu stud Luke Stewart (6-1) during the next Strikeforce event.

Riggs was set to fill in at the last minute for an injured Shonie Carter and face Stewart at Strikeforce: “Melendez vs. Thomson” in June, but was denied clearance from the California State Athletic Commission after revealing he used prescription medication three days earlier.

The promotion tried, but failed to find a replacement for Stewart in time and he was pulled from the card altogether.

Both fighters went on to compete at the next event for Strikeforce on September 20 at the Playboy Mansion. Riggs lost by technical knockout in the second round of the main event to Kazuo Misaki and Stewart defeated Jesse Juarez with an armbar late in the first round.

Luke — a jiu jitsu black belt under Ralph Gracie — has finished each of his six victories before the final bell, including hard fought wins against the Cage Combat middleweight champ Jeremiah Metcalf and “The Ultimate Fighter” season 2 alum Jason Von Flue.

The only fight for Stewart to go the distance was a unanimous decision loss to Tiki Ghosn in March.

For “Diesel” this will be his fourth fight for Strikeforce and his sixth since leaving the UFC following a knockout loss to Diego Sanchez in December of 2006.

Riggs has had back injury issues in the past. In fact, he was forced to submit just over a minute into a match against Cory Devela in February because of the pain from the injury. Apparently he returned to full health after undergoing a procedure to fix a disc that was out-of-place and he’s been able to compete twice since the procedure without any problems.

This should be a very exciting fight — both are well versed grapplers. And even though Riggs holds the edge in power and experience, Luke Stewart should not be taken lightly in this match up regardless of where the action goes.

He can hold his own on his feet as well.

Strikeforce has been quietly putting together quality shows for a few months now and so far what the promotion has for November 21 is right on par.

Affliction MMA Vice President Tom Atencio was our guest this past Monday on MMAmania.com's exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio.

Fresh off Saturday's CBS/Elite XC 'Heat' event that featured Affliction fighters Andrei Arlovski and Roy Nelson, Atencio talked about the future of Affliction MMA, details behind the co-promotions with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and Elite XC, and of course the company's plans for WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko.

Hosted by Larry Pepe, Pro MMA Radio is professional, guest-driven program that features some of mixed martial arts biggest names.

If you're looking for a radio show that revolves around a couple of MMA fans ranting and raving about everything that's already been covered ad nauseam, then Pro MMA Radio probably isn't for you.

However, if you want to hear from actual fighters and industry insiders answering questions that are relevant to the current MMA scene, tune in every Monday night at 9pm for our exclusive live feed.

Sho XC Challenger Series 9 weigh-in results and preview

Posted: 10 Oct 2008 12:07 AM CDT

The Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana will play host tomorrow night (October 10) to Elite XC’s ninth installment of the Sho XC Challenger Series. The event will air live on Showtime, beginning at 11 p.m. ET.

As the case usually is with the Challenger Series events, there are quite a few promising prospects on the card for Elite XC — look no further than the main event.

Undefeated rising star Dave “Pee Wee” Herman (11-0) has won his last two fights for the promotion via technical knockout. He’s made a name for himself despite having only appeared in one televised fight thus far.

Only once has the Indiana native been taken out of the first round during his 11-fight pro career. That’s made more impressive by his claim that he trains by himself out of his own garage, speaking volumes for the guy’s natural athleticism to still be able to compete at such a high level without the top notch training other guys are getting.

Here’s what he had to say on his training for this fight:

“Yes, I am still training alone and, no, I’m not really worried about joining a camp or team although I went and trained for a week in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. I worked on striking and how to block a punch … without using my face. I sparred with Frank Mir. That was fun.”

There are plenty of other fighters on this card to keep an eye on as well. In fact, Elite XC did a really nice job with the matchmaking for this event — all five of the main card bouts could legitimately go either way.

If you like competitive fights, make sure you check this card out.

To help get you prepared for what looks like a solid night of action, here are the weigh in results and a brief preview for each main card fight:

Main event:

265 lbs.: Dave “Pee Wee” Herman (243) vs. Kerry “The Meat Truck” Schall (261)

As stated above, Herman is not only undefeated, but he’s finished each of his 11 opponents. Schall is no walk through opponent, but neither was Ron Waterman or Mario Rinaldi. This should be a fun fight to watch, but expect similar results to the last couple of fights we’ve seen “Pee Wee” in.

Prediction: Dave “Pee Wee” Herman via technical knockout in round two

Main card (Showtime):

170 lbs.: Anthony Lapsley (170.5) vs. Mike Stumpf (172.5)

Lapsley relies heavily on his submissions to win fights. He’s finished 10 of his opponents by way of tapout. He’s only been competing in professional mixed martial arts for a little over two years, but this will mark is seventeenth bout.

Stumpf has a strong wrestling background and he, too, brings a decent ground game to the cage.

But Lapsley is the better athlete and if this fight gets to the mat it certainly favors him. His go-to move is the triangle choke. Of his 10 submission wins, he’s used that hold five times. If Stumpf’s wrestling lands him on top of Lapsley on the mat at anytime, he’ll be in danger of becoming victim number six.

Prediction: Anthony Lapsley via submission (triangle choke) in round two

205 lbs.: Jason Guida (204.5) vs. Mamed “Cannibal” Khalidov (200.5)

We all remember Clay Guida’s brother for coming up a pound shy of the 205-pound limit on the first episode of this season’s “The Ultimate Fighter,” which resulted in his ouster. However, it turns out he’s a pretty decent fighter who has competed 34 times as a professional.

Guida only has a .500 record, but he has the same mentality in the cage as his brother — even if he doesn’t share the same work ethic outside of it.

Khalidov won’t be an easy fight for Guida in his Elite XC debut. He’s a well rounded fighter with a wrestling background who hasn’t lost in more than three years, spanning 12 fights. He’s drawn comparisons to a younger version of “Shogun” Rua by the way he conducts himself in a fight.

That’s a bold comparison there.

We don’t think he’s that good, but he should be able to get past Guida here. We look for these two to just go at it right off the bat and Guida’s conditioning will probably catch up to him either late in the first or early second.

Prediction: Mamed “Cannibal” Khalidov via technical knockout in round two

160 lbs.: Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm (161.5) vs. Rafaello “Trator” Oliveira (160.5)

Beerbohm has only been fighting professionally for a little over a year, but he’s gone undefeated (7-0) with six finishes. Oliveira took his first fight in 2004 and has only competed four times since then. We look for Beerbohm to be the aggressor in this fight and put the heat on “Trator” early and often en route to his eighth win.

Prediction: Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm via technical knockout in round two

185 lbs.: Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (184.5) vs. Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (183.5)

This is a classic striker vs. grappler match up.

The last time McDaniel faced a knockout artist similar to Shlemenko was against Kala Hose … and he submitted him in 41 seconds. The last time Shlemenko faced a ground technician the likes of McDaniel was against Scott Henze … and he knocked him out in 57 seconds.

This fight is a coin flip, but we’re taking the Russian.

Prediction: Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko via knockout in round one

Here’s the rest of the under card (non-televised) portion of Sho XC 9 complete with weigh in results

140 lbs.: Jacob Hey (141) vs. Jared “The Spider” McMahon (140)
160 lbs.: Torrance Taylor (159.5) vs. Jeff Cox (160)
140 lbs.: Orville Smith (139) vs. Matt Jaggers (141)
175 lbs.: Johny Hughes (175) vs. Tiawon Howard (175)
170 lbs.: John Kuhner (169.5) vs. Deray Davis (170.5)
265 lbs.: Josh Barnes (269.5) vs. Jeremy Norton (263)

MMAmania.com will provide live results coverage of the main card tomorrow night, beginning with the Showtime telecast at 11 p.m. ET. Check in early and often for what looks to be a solid lineup of mixed martial arts action.

MMA Quick Quote: Tito Ortiz back surgery a success

Posted: 09 Oct 2008 11:06 PM CDT

tito ortiz

“On October 6th 2008 my extensive back surgery was performed in Las Vegas by Dr. Smith. It lasted 3 hours, due to the doctors careful hand and my densely muscled core that had to be separated in order to get to my spine. My doctor was impressed with my quick recovery, and an hour after surgery I was on my feet and walking to the car. This is now the beginning of a new era. There will never be a question again about where my heart lies … and that is with my fans. I am focused on a quick recovery, and I will be back in the cage with a renewed outlook on fighting. I am a new Tito Ortiz … one with a bright fight future … one ready to power through the light heavyweight class and get the belt around my waist again. Mark my words … the best is yet to come.”

– Tito Ortiz underwent back surgery on Monday. The procedure was not an easy one and neither was the decision to have it. Nonetheless, he went through with it and is already claiming success in a letter posted on ProElite.com. It’s an interesting read. He covers everything from when the back pain first began, to how it affected him in recent fights and to how he believes the UFC stiffed him on medical insurance to cover the procedure. It’s important to note that “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has indicated that he intends to return in as few as six months; however, Nate Quarry underwent a similar spinal fusion procedure and it took him more than a year to recover. All things, of course, are often not equal among individuals when it comes to surgery, healing and overall health. We’ll keep you posted on his progress.

Patrick Cote video on preparation for Anderson Silva UFC 90 fight

Posted: 09 Oct 2008 03:36 PM CDT

MMACanada.net recently caught up with Patrick Cote in Montreal, Quebec, while he was in the midst of preparing for his middleweight title fight against Anderson “The Spider” Silva at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25.

Shortly after this video was taken, which shows “The Predator” sparring and a brief behind the scenes look into his preparations for the biggest fight of his career, Cote headed down to Boston to train with Mark DellaGrotte at the famed Sityodtong gym.

After watching Anderson Silva dismantle a “who's who” of the middleweight division last night on Spike TV's “UFC Unleashed,” Cote is going to have his hands full with the Brazilian.

Regardless of how heavy the odds favor the best 'pound for pound fighter', Cote is confident leading up to October 25.

Check out his thoughts right here.

Josh Koscheck vs Yoshiyuki Yoshida to headline ‘Fight for the Troops’ Dec. 10

Posted: 09 Oct 2008 02:34 PM CDT

The fantastic welterweight match up between Josh Koscheck and Yoshiyuki Yoshida, which MMAmania.com first passed along right here, will serve as the main event for UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C., on Wednesday, December 10.

USA Today today confirmed the complete line up, as well as talked to “Kos” about his big 170-pound showdown with “Zenko.”

Here’s a snip:

“I really [don’t] know too much about him. I just know he’s a pretty good judo player. And he comes to fight. For me, at the level that we’re at, I’m just here to fight whoever they put in front of me and try to finish him quick, get the victory and move one step closer to becoming the UFC world champion.”

Remember that the special three-hour special presentation is a free event just for the troops — tickets are not available for purchase for the general public.

The special event, however, is designed to raise funds for the construction of The National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a treatment center for Armed Forces personnel who have experienced traumatic brain injuries.

Therefore, donations are accepted and encouraged.
