UFC Quick Quote: Michael Bisping wants a shot at Anderson Silva before he retires

Posted: 24 Oct 2008 08:18 AM CDT

“I think there are a lot of good fights at middleweight for [Anderson Silva] – me being one of them. Anderson is the pound for pound best in the world – an unbelievable fighter. He improves with every fight, shows a different game every time and is a class act. It'd be great for him to leave on a high and think you do have to set out a point when you are going to call it quits…. But that said, I want to get a pop at the guy before he retires….. I don't want to beat somebody by default to get the belt — I want to beat the best guy out there….. He's calling it quits too soon. There are a lot of good middleweights out there that he hasn't fought yet.”

Count “The Count” among most who have a vested interested in mixed martial arts who do not want to see UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva to retire anytime soon. “The Spider” has mentioned numerous times that his plan is to finish his six-fight contract with the UFC and retire by the age of 35, which would be sometime in 2009. Bisping is heating up the 185-pound division with three consecutive wins, including a unanimous decision win over Chris Leben at UFC 89 last weekend. He will next serve as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) and will likely fight the opposing coach (unnamed at this time) for a right to challenge the current champion. And unless Patrick Cote scores the upset of 2008 at UFC 90 this Saturday then that person will more than likely be the feared Brazilian striker.

Marcus Davis unsure if Chris Lytle deserves a fight against him at UFC 93

Quoteworthy:

“I don’t mind Chris calling me out, it’s part of the game. I certainly didn’t take offense. He had warned me beforehand that he was going to do it, so I don’t consider it disrespectful or anything. I like Chris and think he is a great guy but I don’t know whether he deserves a fight against me. People always say that Chris is the ‘gatekeeper’ to our division, but I think that I am past the gate at the moment. I have spoken to a few people who have told me that they actually think Paul Taylor won that fight against Chris. I beat Paul in one round (in September 2007), so I’m just not sure. But, of course, if that is the fight that the UFC want, then I am more than happy.”

Marcus Davis is eager to return to the Octagon at UFC 93: “Dublin” at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, January 17, 2008. However, “The Irish Hand Grenade” is unclear if Chris Lytle — who decisioned Paul Taylor at UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben” last weekend and called Davis out afterward — is deserving of the opportunity to fight him at this time. Davis also won at UFC 89 with a slick second round submission over Paul Kelly. I was his twelfth with in 13 fights. Lytle, on the other hand, has won just four of his last eight. However, the losses during that stretch were to Josh Koscheck, Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra — some pretty good competition. If Lytle and Davis were to collide it would certainly be one hell of a fight, which is more than likely the reason “Lights Out” is asking for it. He loves earning that bonus money win or lose.

DEEP 38 ‘Impact’ results and quick recap

deep

By Stefan Manojlovic

DEEP 38 ‘Impact’ took place earlier today at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

The main event brought in the crowds but ended disappointingly when Katsuyori Shibata battled Yasuhito Namekawa to a draw.

Shibata is well known in Japan for his professional wrestling despite having a mixed martial arts record that borders on abysmal (2-5 with five straight losses).

In fairness he has battled some tough competition like Yoshihiro Akiyama, Ralek Gracie & Kazushi Sakuraba, but at this stage of his MMA career he really needs to pull in a “W”.

Riki Fukuda (who some fans may recognize from his previous stint with EliteXC) had a fast paced brawl with Dutch export Jason Jones. Even though it went to a decision it was one of the more exciting fights of the night with Fukuoda coming out on top.

This fight was not without controversy however when Jones did not hear the bell at the end of the second round and continued to pummel Fukuda with some vicious ground and pound.

Both corners stormed the ring and one fan even threw a cup of ice into the ring which ironically seemed to cool things down. All was quickly forgotten and Jones & Fukuoda payed respect to each other after the fight.

It was rumored that Jones was in an altercation with a fan after the event, but no further details have been provided.

Eiji Ishikawa was successful at derailing the freight train which is Simeon Thoresen. The Norwegian sensation had won all nine of his mixed martial arts fights before Isikawa bested him with a majority decision win.

No doubt Thoresen will be back. He has a incredible amount of potential but Ishikawa proved to be the better man on this night.

In the only women’s bout of the night, Sakoto Shinashi looked impressive when she submitted Yukiko Seki just 90 seconds into the first round.

Here are the DEEP 38 'Impact’ complete results:

Main Card

Katsuyori Shibata (2-5-1) fought Yasuhito Namekawa (24-16-4) to a draw

Robert Drysdale MMA amateur debut a success

Posted: 23 Oct 2008 04:02 PM CDT

Robert Drysdale — the 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Open Weight tournament winner — tasted mixed martial arts victory for the first time ever over the weekend, submitting Josh Musick with a sweet-looking first round armbar at TUFF-N-UFF.

The event took place at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 17, marking the amateur debut in the sport for perhaps the most dangerous 205-pound Brazilian jiu-jitsu player on the planet today.

For about a decade Drysdale terrorized the international jiu-jitsu circuit, winning medals and finishing some of the best in the business (see Garcia, Marcelo among others). The American-born world champion recently returned to the United States from Brazil and settled back in to "Sin City," however, to prepare for a successful transition to mixed martial arts.

He's off to a good start.

Drysdale can often be seen Wednesday nights on Spike TV, serving as an assistant coach for Frank Mir on this season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). He also serves as the head Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor at X-treme Couture in Las Vegas.

Of course, while there he doubles as a student and a teacher. It's hard not to pick up a thing or two about mixed martial arts at X-treme Couture when Randy Couture, Shawn Tompkins, Wanderlei Silva, Forrest Griffin and the rest of the insanely talented crew there are all milling around.

In fact, Mir, Silva, his boxing coach Skipper Kelp and several others were in his corner on fight night to ensure that Drysdale was prepared and ready to go, showing that everyone likes to associate with a winner.

Drysdale — who already boasts aggressive jiu-jitsu that is well suited for MMA — has a natural overhand right that he has been training tirelessly in the gym at all times to integrate into a wicked all-around arsenal.

With a high-powered MMA marketing and management agency run by one of the most powerful agents in the business, Dean Albrecht — who also represents many of the best fighters in the world and top jiu-jitsu fighters including Demian Maia, Mir and Nate Marquardt among others — behind him, Drysdale has all the important pieces required to becoming a star … again.

UFC All Access with Anderson Silva to debut on Spike TV

Posted: 23 Oct 2008 01:17 PM CDT

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva will be the focus of the latest installment of "UFC All Access," which will air tonight (October 23) at midnight ET on Spike TV.

"The Spider, of course, is about to put his 185-pound title on the line once again against Patrick Cote at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25.

It will be real interesting to get a behind-the-scenes look at the soft-spoken Brazilian who is widely regarded as the top pound-for-pound mixed martial artists alive today. Perhaps even more interesting is to see if the “UFC All Access” curse applies to the formidable Mr. Silva in the future.

Here's the official program description:

“UFC All Access will give you a glimpse into the life of Ultimate Fighter Anderson Silva.”

Former UFC ring girl and current Playboy magazine cover girl Rachelle Leah is the host of the half-hour program, which will re-air on Saturday, October 25 at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET, respectively.

Be sure to tune in to see what all the buzz is about. And remember to hit us up on fight night for all the latest LIVE UFC 90 results and coverage this weekend.
