Bellator 27 results: Joe Warren defeats Joe Soto to claim featherweight championship

SAN ANTONIO, TX. (September 2, 2010) — Bellator Fighting Championships crowned a new Featherweight World Champion in front of a boisterous crowd at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio. Fans were treated to a full card of electrifying fights that included one of the best comebacks in the history of the sport.

In the night’s main event the Bellator World Featherweight Championship was on the line as "The Baddest Man on the Planet", Joe Warren, took on defending Bellator World Champion Joe "The Hammer" Soto in the first ever defense of a Bellator World Title.

The first round was all Soto, as the undefeated champion put on a boxing clinic, delivering a series of devastating punches to what appeared to be a completely outmatched Warren. As the first round came to a close, a battered and bruised Warren headed to his corner shaken, but not discouraged.

In Round Two, Warren stormed out of the gate on a mission, delivering a overhand right to the head of Soto that sent The Hammer reeling to the canvas. After scrambling back to his feet, it was a crushing knee to the chin that finished the fight, establishing Warren as the newly crowned Bellator World Featherweight Champion.

"I told you I was going to win," proclaimed an overjoyed Joe Warren after the fight. "I came in here and got the job done. I’m super happy to be a World Champion. This is the first time I’ve knocked someone out – there is a lot more to come."

Chairman and CEO of Bellator Fighting Championships, Bjorn Rebney, was thoroughly impressed by Joe Warren’s heart and courage, stating, "If you saw Joe Warren’s fight with Patricio Pitbull in Season 2, most people would not of made it out of that first round, but Warren has that immeasurable heart that allows him to push forward. Tonight was no different. When I sat down with Warren a year ago he told me that he was willing to die in there to get that title. Most people just say that, but when he says it you believe it. What a great performance. We have a tremendously talented and rapidly evolving featherweight champion."

Kicking off the night was a Quarterfinal Bantamweight Tournament matchup between Ed "Wild" West and Bryan Goldsby.

Both fighters began feeling each other out on the feet before West attempted a series of dazzling leg lock submissions attempts that impressed the crowd and the judges. In the final period, "Wild" West came out swinging for the fences, connecting with a number of heavy strikes to Goldsby, which ultimately led to a unanimous decision win for the talented West.

In other Bantamweight Tournament action, Nick "Garfield" Mamalis took on Zach "Fun Size" Makovsky a grueling back and forth three round battle. Both fighters flexed their wrestling skills in a match filled with crisp strikes and impressive slams. The momentum swung back and forth, with Markovsky shaking off everything Mamalis tried to throw at him early.

However, Mamalis landed powerful takedown slam in the second round that left Makovsky in a daze. As the fight moved to the third and final round, Fun Size dug deep and secured a rear-naked-choke that led Makovsky to an impressive 30-27 unanimous decision victory.

Rounding out the Bantamweight Tournament was a quarterfinal match between submission specialist Ulysses "Useless" Gomez and Travis "Hurricane" Reddinger.

Gomez controlled the first round with consistent leg kicks and looked to end the fight early by applying a tight guillotine to Reddinger, but was unsuccessful in his attempt. Rounds two and three saw similar action, with each fighter delivering numerous takedowns throughout the fight while Gomez controlled the bulk of the action on his way to a hard fought split decision victory (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

"This is what Bellator is all about; anyone can change the outcome of a fight with a single knee or punch in our tournament style format," said Rebney. "It was another spectacular event in San Antonio.

Below is a full list of results from Bellator 27:

  • Gilbert Jimenez def. Aaron Barringer via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Richard Odoms def. Dale Mitchell via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)*
  • Andrew Craig def. Rodrigo Pinheiro via TKO (doctor's stoppage due to cut) - Round 3, 2:53
  • Andrew Chappelle def. Joe Christopher via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Ulysses Gomez def. Travis Reddinger via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
  • Jon Kirk def. Shane Faulkner via TKO (strikes) - Round 3, 2:19

Marcus Davis apologizes for UFC 118 performance, provides update on eye injury

Marcus Davis, who sustained a horrific eye injury during a submission loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 118 in front of his local supporters on Aug, 28, 2010, today issued the following statement regarding his performance (via the Press Herald):

"I am now home resting with my family. I want to thank all the people who supported me and all the people with team Irish MMA, team Gurgel, and team Sityodtong for all the help preparing for the match. I left the fight in the puddles of sweat on the floor of Sityodtong. I was over trained and never took the rest to recuperate that I should have. Within minutes of the first round my legs felt like I had just ran a marathon and they never came back. Today my thighs feel as though I spent the weekend lifting weights. I am known to have good footwork but had none that night. The accidental head clashes caused most of the damage to the right side of my face and eye. I have three lacerations, two over the right eye and one under it. My CAT scan came back good. No brakes or fractures. The eye itself is being looked at. I had my second appointment today and my next one is in a week. Although I'm having some cloudy vision it is much better than it was initially and with rest it should return to 100 percent. I apologize to my supporters, team, friends and sponsors for not performing to my full potential. Being recognized for fight of the night honors is great and that's why I fight -- to entertain -- but I wish I could have done so the way I have done in previous fights. Thank you again."

Anyone in their right mind think the gutsy "Irish Hand Grenade" has anything to apologize for after putting on the "Fight of the Night"?

UFC Quick Quote: 'Big Nog' rooting for Cro Cop to beat Frank Mir in Indianapolis

Mir_nog_medium

"I'm rooting for Cro Cop. He's more humble! (laughs) Watch TUF and tell me why!"

-- Antonio "Rodrigo" Nogueira, who has been undergoing therapy to recover from recent hip surgery that prevented him from fighting Frank Mir in the UFC 119 main event in Indianapolis, Indiana, is pulling for his replacement, Mirko Cro Cop, to do his dirty work later this month."Minotauro" and Mir were opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter mixed martial arts reality series, which culminated with the pair battling for Nogueira's interim heavyweight title. Mir won, convincingly, stopping the durable Brazilian for the first time ever in his professional career. Nogueira has history with Cro Cop, too, winning with a come-from-behind submission after getting battered for nearly 10 full minutes. He's apparently more impressed with the way the reserved Croatian handles his pre- and post-fight business as opposed to the opinionated Mir. Is Mir's arrogance, for lack of a better word, something that makes not just "Big Nog" the only one who wants to see Mir get put in his place ... again?

KJ Noons: 'Nick Diaz is going to have to kill me to beat me'

"I'm super excited about the opportunity, and I think it's a great thing for me. To be in the Strikeforce main event on Showtime, to be in line to be a two-time, two-division world champion, and getting to beat Nick again in the process... I couldn't ask for a better fight. I already got one up on Nick. I beat the crap out of the guy. He's had a good run, and there's a lot of build-up for this rematch. We've both improved, this is a different weight class now, he's gotten better, I've gotten better, it's a different situation. But at the end of the day, I'm a true mixed martial artist, I have respect for the sport, and I am a good role model... Nick's good for entertainment, but I come from a family of fighters. I started early, and I have respect for martial arts. It teaches you discipline, how to become a good person, and I feel that I am. On October 9, I'm fighting a guy that, if I had a kid, I wouldn't want him looking up to. He's a trash-talking, pot-smoking chump. It's motivation for sure [to be fighting near Diaz's hometown]. I love being the underdog. Even when I'm not, I still try to picture myself as the underdog so I train harder and push myself. Nick says he's bringing his guys, but so am I. They're going to need to beef up security. This is beyond a grudge match. I'm going to light him up like a Christmas tree. He's going to have to kill me to [to beat me]. It's very personal."

With the grudge match three years in the making between K.J. Noons and Nick Diaz set for October 9 in San Jose, California, it leaves us just over a month to enjoy the pre-fight verbal assaults that are sure to be fired between the two combatants. First shot comes courtesy of Mr. Noons, who holds nothing back calling Diaz a "pot-smoking chump" who is gonna "get lit up like a Christmas tree." K.J also asserts that Nick will have to kill him to defeat him. I'm sure Diaz would have no problem obliging him there. Thoughts on the match up? Does Noons make it 2-0 against the current Strikeforce welterweight champ? Or, will Diaz get the revenge he so desperately craves?

Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem wants to see Fedor Emelianenko fight 'Bigfoot' Silva ...

... according to a few recent Twitter transmissions from the "Demolition Man" (@alistairovereem) directed toward Antonio Silva:

"Everybody is talkin about me and Fedor, it’s not fair to you. Fedor should fight you in December, then problem is solved..... The real reason M-1/Fedor called me out is to distract attention of a possible match with Silva. He wants Fedor but M-1 don’t want Silva."

Apparently Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem agrees with Antonio Silva that Fedor Emelianenko should fight "Bigfoot" next. Silva has asked for this fight, but the Russian's cagey camp doesn't seem interested. Overeem has already stated that because Fabricio Werdum defeated Emelianenko, and because he's currently out of commission recovering from elbow surgery, that he intends to enter the 2010 K-1 Grand Prix tournament and wait until he's healthy. Emelianenko's camp recently attempted to goad Overeem into a fight, releasing a statement essentially calling him out, but the Dutchman is not biting. Are there any other options left or is an Emelianenko-Silva showdown the only one left on the table?

UFC 123: Karo Parisyan vs Dennis Hallman in the works for November 20 in Detroit

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 12:58 PM PDT

Parisyan-hallman_medium

"The Heat" is back.

Less than a year after supposedly being barred from the UFC forever by Dana White when he pulled out of his UFC 106 bout with Dustin Hazelett just a couple days before the event, Karo Parisyan is back in the UFC.

MMA Fighting broke the news today along with word of his opponent, Dennis Hallman.

Fight agreements have yet to be signed, but both guys have verbally agreed to throw down at UFC 123 on November 20 from The Palace of Auburn Hills just outside of Detroit, Michigan.

Parisyan's last fight in the UFC resulted in a nine-month suspension dished out by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after testing positive for several major painkillers following his controversial split decision win over Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" on Jan. 31, 2009.

Under the terms of the ruling, Karo was fined 40 percent of his purse ($32,000) and his win over the Korean was ruled a "No Contest."

Prior to the positive test, he Armenian-born Judo player battled a nervous disorder, as well as injuries, which forced him out of a match against Yoshiyuki Yoshida less than 24 hours before showtime back in Sept. 2008.

Dennis Hallman has gone 1-1 since returning to the UFC after his own long layoff. He most recently defeated Ben Saunders at UFC 117 via unanimous decision. He lost to John Howard at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Finale last December in his first contest with the promotion since UFC 55 in 2005 where he lost to Jorge Rivera.

UFC 123 is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight match up of top contenders Lyoto Machida and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

Stay tuned for more UFC 123 fight announcements as they become available.

Joe Soto: 'It would suck to lose to a dirt bag like Joe Warren'

"I think I'm a lot better rounded that he is. This isn't a wrestling, this is MMA. We don't know whose wrestling is going to be better until we get in there. I'm more well rounded - I'm going to kick his ass. It's going to take a different opponent for me to lose this belt - not Joe Warren. I've grown a lot in this sport, but I feel like I haven't gotten the opportunity to use all of my tools. Maybe Joe Warren will push me to use all of those tools. It would suck to lose to him; I never want to lose to a dirt bag like that."

With Bellator 27 set to take place tonight from the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas, the promotion recently distributed a few quality quotes from their current featherweight champion Joe Soto. And by quality I mean unfiltered thoughts designed to get a rise out of challenger Joe Warren. Soto will put his title and undefeated record up against Warren who burst onto the MMA scene with his upset of "Kid" Yamamoto at DREAM.9 last year. Let's get some predictions on this intriguing battle of wrestlers.

WEC 52: Urijah Faber vs Takeya Mizugaki rebooked for November 11 in Las Vegas

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 12:07 PM PDT

Faber-mizugaki_medium

Let's try this again.

After Urijah Faber was forced to pull out of his bantamweight debut against Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 50 last month because of a knee injury, the promotion has rescheduled the bout for WEC 52, which is set to go down on November 11 from The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MMA Weekly confirmed the news earlier today.

Faber was recently pushed out of the 145-pound weight class by reigning division champion Jose Aldo. Aside from a Jens Pulver submission win, "The California Kid" dropped consecutive fights to his temporary successor Mike Brown, first at WEC 36 and then again at WEC 41.

His frame may be better served at 135-pounds, but don't expect any liberties from Mizugaki.

The rugged Japanese brawler made a name for himself in his promotion debut, giving then-champion Miguel Torres all he could handle for five rounds in the main event of WEC 40 back in April 2009.

Since that loss, Mizugaki has gone 2-1 for the promotion, defeating Jeff Curran (WEC 42) and Rani Yahya (WEC 48) but losing on points to Scott Jorgensen at WEC 45. A convincing win over a "name" like Faber could possibly get him right back into contention.

Bellator 33: Lyman Good vs Ben Askren confirmed for October 21 in Philadelphia

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Lyman1_medium

Undefeated prospects Lyman "Cyborg" Good and Ben "Funky" Askren will finally meet at Bellator 33 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 21. Lyman and Ben will fight for the welterweight title that's currently held by the 10-0 Good.

Askren confirmed the news via Twitter yesterday.

This is only the second fight announced on the card, the first being a highly anticipated lightweight showdown between Bellator's lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and season-two finalist Roger Huerta. Alvarez was supposed to fight Pat Curran, who upset Huerta to claim the season two tournament championship, but Curran suffered an injury during training and had to withdraw from the fight.

Although Bellator 33 is still a little far out, these two fights alone could carry that card. Lyman vs. Askren is an interesting match up between two of the sports most dominating welterweights.  Good cruised his way through the first season's welterweight tournament by wrecking Hector Urbina, Jorge Ortiz, and Omar De La Cruz, claiming a $175,000 check as well as the first ever Bellator welterweight title. Good has looked unstoppable as of recent, but hasn't fought since June of last year.

Askren is a former NCAA Division 1 wrestling champion who also has some seriously sick grappling skills, which he showcased throughout last season's tournament - battering UFC veteran Ryan Thomas twice before out-working Dan Hornbuckle for 15 minutes en route to claiming the season two championship.

Ben's ability to control his opponent everywhere on the ground makes him extremely dangerous, as getting taken down by him usually means you're not getting back up.  Lyman will need to keep this fight standing in order to win, as Askren's striking is still seriously lacking and is only used to set up his takedowns.

Bellator 33, which takes place on October 21 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will air live on FOX Sports Net.

UFC 118 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Edgar vs Penn 2'

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 10:21 AM PDT

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission recently issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2," which took place on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, from the TD Garden in Boston.

With several of the bouts ending early (and violently), 10 of the 20 fighters who competed on the "Beantown" pay-per-view were flagged for follow up visits with their doctors.

Chief among them was UFC welterweight Marcus Davis. "The Irish Hand Grenade" is on the shelf indefinitely (possible head trauma) until a CT Scan clears him for return. Still, Davis must serve a minimum suspension of 60 days with 30 days of no contact.

His opponent, savvy submission expert Nate Diaz, was also busted up in his Boston debut. The Cesar Gracie disciple will be out for six months due to a possible nasal fracture unless X-Rays prove otherwise. Like Davis, Diaz is benched for a minimum of 60 days.

Also getting a mandatory vacation was Birmingham's John Salter. A possible left hand fracture will require X-Rays to get him off the hook after falling to Dan Miller, who got a precautionary 30-day rest of his own.

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC 118 injuries and their medical instructions (via Boston Herald):

Nick Osipczak: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.

Greg Soto: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.

Amilcar Alves: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.

John Salter: Suspended 180 days (possible left hand fracture) pending physician X-Rays. Minimum suspension 30 days (21 days no contact).

Gabe Ruediger: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.

Nate Diaz: Suspended 180 days (possible nasal fracture) pending physician X-Rays. Minimum suspension 60 days (60 days no contact).

Marcus Davis: Suspended indefinitely (possible head trauma) pending physician CT Scan. Minimum suspension 60 days (30 days no contact).

Kenny Florian: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.

Gray Maynard: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.

Dan Miller: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Shiny, happy, bully: Gray Maynard wants Frankie's bling-bling in lightweight rematch

"I was like damn Frankie's doing good! He just kept coming, and he did good. It was a great fight. My hat's off to him. This is the best time. I went through all the top guys. Nobody can say, 'Oh he didn't do this, or this.' This is mine, I deserve this, I earned it. It's great competition. He trains hard. He's a cool guy too. It's cool because his dad is always like 'hey Gray!' talks to me and stuff; nicest guy in the world. So trash talk ain't gonna happen. But I guarantee you he's going to train hard, and I'll train, and it's going to be a good fight. It's all business. [His belt] was blinging, it was all shiny and stuff. I hope he doesn’t mess it up. I don't want any chips in it when I get it."

UFC lightweight number one contender Gray Maynard is mesmerized by the shiny gold of Frankie Edgar's championship belt. "The Bully" remains perfect at 10-0, including a 2008 win over "The Answer" in Colorado. Will he be able to repeat that performance against his fellow wrestler when they rematch in 2011? Opinions please.

Will the 'great storyline' behind a Gray Maynard rematch help Frankie Edgar become a more marketable champion?

"It's going to take time, just like it took time for GSP to be considered to be the best welterweight because Matt Hughes was so good for so long. Now GSP has so many wins and people think he's the best. It just takes time for me to get my respect and that's how it works. You have to earn your time ... Being a marketable champion takes time. I've got to get some more exposure. I've been in the main event on the main card two times in a row and that helps out some. As far as the storyline goes, I think it's a great storyline. [Gray Maynard] got a win over me and I've got the title. He's worked his way up and is undefeated. My only loss is to him. I think it's a great storyline. People will want to see that."

UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar recognizes the long road ahead in his quest to be considered one of the sport's great champions. "The Answer" has done the hard part, which is lasting ten rounds with former division kingpin BJ Penn and taking two unanimous decision wins from "The Prodigy." Can the New Jersey native now win over the fans too? Or does his style of offense work against him? Perhaps finishing the undefeated Gray Maynard would be a great way to win over some of the anti-Edgars. What's your opinion of the champ?

"I took this fight with 2 weeks to prepare and I truly felt that I would be ready. Would it have been different with a full camp? I'll probably never know. I am very disappointed with my performance and have a LOT to work on when I get home. I spoke with Joe Silva from the UFC and he told me I would have at least one more chance and next time I would have the proper time to prepare. For that I am happy, but I still cant believe how bad that fight was for me. I have 4 staples in my head and some bruising, but the real pain deeper. Ill be back to the gym as soon as I can to work out what went wrong and to prepare to come back stronger. For those that support me, I am very sorry for this performance. It wasn't deserving of any support."

Former TUF 5 contestant and unofficial cake boss Gabe Ruediger is expected to get one more chance to prove he belongs in the UFC after getting dominated by Joe Lauzon at UFC 118 last Saturday night (Aug. 28) in Boston. "Godzilla" stepped up on short notice to replace the injured Terry Etim and hopes to have a better performance in his next fight. Anyone think he's got the goods? Or can we expect more of the same his next time out?

UFC Quick Quote: Will Cain Velasquez be able to handle 'someone as big and powerful' as Brock Lesnar?

"What Brock needs more than anything are good sparring partners that can kickbox and grapple, so he's gotta get some guys in his camp that can actually throw down with good striking, good takedowns, good takedown defense. I'm sure the goal for that camp will be to bring some good strikers in. [Velasquez] is real tough, there's a big size difference between Brock and him though, the power factor. He's a good qwrestler so he can actually stop stuff, get out of stuff, but I don't know if he's used to going with someone as big and powerful as Brock."

Lesnar coach Eric Paulson tells Marcos Villegas that Cain Velasquez will present a significant challenge when he goes head-to-head with the division champion at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 in Anaheim. The big story surrounding the heavyweight championship bout is the size difference between champion and challenger, but the Lesnar camp is confident that "Brown Pride" will succumb to the power of the former WWE star. Anyone disagree?
