Report:Tyson Griffin vs Nik Lentz in the works for UFC 123

Let's get ready to WRESTLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE!

Lightweight grappling machines Tyson Griffin and Nik Lentz will likely lock up at UFC 123, which is scheduled for  The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Mich., on Nov. 20.

MMAWeekly.com brought word of the pending 155-pound match up earlier this evening.

Griffin is coming off a devastating knockout loss to Takanori Gomi back in August. It marked the first time ever that the Xtreme Couture prospect was stopped in his professional career. It was also his second straight defeat, which was also a first, meaning that he'll need to knock off "The Carney" if he wants to get back in the mix or possibly risk his immediate future with the promotion.

Lentz, meanwhile, is coming off an upset win over The Ultimate Fighter alum, Andre Winner, at UFC 118 just last month. It was a workman-like performance -- Lentz was all over Winner with takedowns, mixing in strikes and several submission attempts throughout his smothering performance.

He likely won't have such an easy time against Griffin as he looks to remain undefeated (3-0) inside the Octagon.

UFC 123 is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight match up of top contenders Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Karo "The Heat" Parisyan has also been given a second chance at UFC stardom against Dennis "Superman" Hallman.

Stay tuned for more UFC 123 fight announcements as they become available.

UFC Quick Quote: Kenny Florian hires wrestling coach, plans to return in early 2011

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 01:06 PM PDT

Kennyflorian-7_medium

"It looks like my training team wants me to fight in another five months. I'm more motivated than ever. I'm pissed, to be honest. I want to crush my training. That's what I'm focused on right now. I just hired the assistant wrestling coach at Boston University (Sean Gray) to be my wrestling coach here in Boston and I have other plans for a lot of other things as far as training goes... Losses are blessings in disguise I've never been more motivated in my life. I kind of feel like this was one of the most frustrating losses that I've ever had and it was a fight I definitely learned a lot from. I'm very motivated and I had to come back to training quickly. I've already started training and did a hard conditioning session (Tuesday). I'm just motivated to work very hard and get right back into it... I need to make sure my game is capable of beating everybody in every aspect and it wasn't. So, I've been doing wrestling every single day. I've been watching wrestling and researching wrestling every single day."

Coming off a tough defeat at the hands, and takedowns, of Gray Maynard at UFC 118, Kenny Florian told Bruce Buffer on his Sherdog radio show that he is remotivated and ready to overhaul his game to become a more all-around fighter. "The Bully" used his superior wrestling to outpoint Florian en route to a unanimous decision and earn himself a title shot against Frankie Edgar. The first step in this rebirth is the hiring of a wrestling coach to help him better prepare for the top wrestlers in the 155-pound division. Anybody think this move will finally put Kenny over the top? Who do you think would be a good match up for him when he returns to the Octagon this winter?

UFC veteran Shannon Gugerty to replace injured Marcus Aurelio in Shine Grand Prix

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 12:12 PM PDT

Shine_20lrg_medium

NEWKIRK, OK (September 8, 2010) - As anyone involved in the sport of mixed martial arts can tell you, injuries can happen at anytime. UFC/PRIDE veteran Marcus "Maximus" Aurelio is no exception to that concept. After sustaining an injury while training for this weekend's Shine Fights Lightweight Grand Prix, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master has been forced to vacate his spot in the tourney. Taking his place will be fellow submission specialist Shannon Gugerty.

A UFC veteran in his own right, Gugerty is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under famed grappler Dean Lister. He began his professional MMA career successfully with a submission victory over current WEC mainstay Cub Swanson. After amassing a 10-2 record, he was invited to compete for the Ultimate Fighting Championships, where he has fought five times. During his time with the UFC, Gugerty was able to rack up wins over Dale Hartt and Matt Grice. The 28 year-old San Diego native trains at Victory MMA with fellow notables Jeremy Stephens, Court McGee, Toby Imada, Peter Sobotta, Joe Brammer, and Tomas Drwal.

Jason Chamber, Shine Fight COO stated, "I am sad to see Marcus pull out of the tournament and wish him a fast recovery. Stepping up to a challenge of this magnitude on 3 days notice is a very daunting task- it is a testament to what a warrior Shannon Gugerty is. We are excited to see him compete!"

The Shine Fights Lightweight Grand Prix is a unique throwback to the original format of mixed martial arts. Fighters will need to be at their best in order to win the tourney and in the process gain the glory that comes along with victory. The Grand Prix will be contested under standard Nevada State Athletic Commission rules for MMA. Each of the eight 155 lb. fighters will be paired off in the tournament's opening round, with the four winners moving on to round two.

The two winners of round two will move on to the tournament's final round, and battle for the championship. The single-elimination format means that the tournament winner will need to win three bouts that evening. Rounds one and two of the tournament will be composed of two 5-minute rounds. They will also have a three-minute overtime if needed to decide a winner. Round three (the finals) will increase to three 5-minute rounds. There will be two alternate bouts held in case of an injury.

Some of the best 155 lb. fighters in the world will compete in the tournament, a colorful array of combatants that will lay it all on the line in order to capture the Shine Fights Lightweight Championship. This group of outstanding athletes includes Rich "Cleat" Crunkilton, "Alley Cat" Kyle Baker, James Warfield, Drew Fickett, Carlo Prater, and Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett.

This Grand Prix Tournament will be beamed on PPV on cable and satellite in the United States and Canada. The event will be in High Definition and it will be available in both English and Spanish (where available).  The Grand Prix Tournament will be distributed live on Pay Per View beginning at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST by Multi Vision Media, Inc.  The suggested retail price is $29.95.

Nate Marquardt: 'I'm not letting Rousimar Palhares catch me in any submission'

Quoteworthy:

"That's his style. He likes to work those submissions. But I'm ready to defend those submissions with everything I have. I'm not letting him catch me in anything. I heard he's working very hard on his wrestling. I'm expecting him to be a great wrestler when it comes to his takedowns. If he shows up with anything less than that it'll be an easy night. But if he shows up with good takedowns I'll be able to display that I have good takedown defense. I'll have him on the bottom if he pulls guard or whatever and be able to work my ground and pound from there. But who knows? He could be a completely different fighter when I fight him... Not looking past Palhares, but winning this fight I'm gonna want a top guy. My goal is to get a title shot. I think I'm gonna have to beat one of those guys [Belfort or Okami] or maybe a Wanderlei Silva to get that shot."

With just one week to go until UFC Fight Night 22 goes down from Austin, Texas, one part of the show's main event made his claim as to why he'll walk away the victor. Nate Marquardt was just one win away, against Chael Sonnen at UFC 109, of earning himself another title shot. Now he has to work his way back up. The first man he'll have to defeat is Rousimar Palhares, a submission specialist who's coming off back-to-back victories via heel hook. It'll be no easy task to get by "Toquinho," but if he does, "The Great" is eyeing a top 185-pounder to jump right back in the title mix. Let's get some predictions on the UFC Fight Night 22 main event.

Punch drunk: KJ Noons willing to stand and trade with Manny Pacquiao in MMA fight

"I would love to welcome Pacquiao into MMA. It would be an ideal situation for him because I don't take guys down to the ground, and after that's all said and done in the cage, I would be willing to step inside of the ring with him too, something we all knew Randy Couture wouldn't do with James Toney. I know Floyd (Mayweather) isn't looking to do MMA, but I would still be willing to fight Mayweather and Pacquiao in a boxing match and both camps have been reached, so we will see what happens. I will put it this way, both camps have been reached and both camps were very interested."

Just a few weeks before his rematch with Nick Diaz in San Jose, former Elite XC Lightweight Champion and current Strikeforce attraction KJ Noons lets it be known that he wants to be atop the very short list of professional fighters willing to throw hands with puissant pugilist Manny Pacquiao, who's been floating the idea of dabbling in mixed martial arts in between boxing mega-fights. Unfortunately the likelihood of ever seeing "Pac-Man" inside a cage is slim to none, but just to be safe, "King Karl" is also calling out Floyd Mayweather Jr. Is Noons just grabbing headlines? Or does his recent run in "the sweet science" put him in a position to challenge boxing's greatest fighters?

TUF 12 Finale: Kendall Grove vs Demian Maia set for Dec. 4 in Las Vegas

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 07:59 AM PDT

Grove-maia_medium

The live finale of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 continues to take shape with another interesting match-up as former Spike TV reality show contestant (and Season 3 winner) Kendall Grove will jump into deep water with grappling wizard Demian Maia at "The Pearl" from the Palms Casino Resort on Dec. 4 in Las Vegas.

"Da Spyder" tweeted his pending match-up earlier today.

After posting three straight wins to start his UFC career, Grove (12-7) fell victim to inconsistency over the past couple of years, going 4-4 over the span of eight fights.

The Hawaiian was planished by Mark Munoz at UFC 112: "Invincible" earlier this year, but was able to rebound with a much-needed win over Goran Reljic, a split decision at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" back on July 3.

Grove has never been short on talent, but by his own admission has battled with issues both inside and outside the cage. He'll need to be at 100-percent to overcome the crafty Maia, despite having a tremendous size and reach advantage.

Like Grove, the Brazilian was electric right out of the gate, stringing together consecutive victories following his Octagon debut -- until Nate Marquardt turned him inside out at UFC 102: "Couture vs Nogueira" back in 2009.

Maia would sandwich decision wins over Dan Miller and Mario Miranda around his memorable loss to Anderson Silva in Abu Dhabi last April.

Finishing Grove may be the catalyst to getting him back into title contention.

TUF 12 Finale will feature the top two finalists from this season going head-to-head for a "six-figure" contract and the right to be called "Ultimate Fighter." Stephan Bonnar and Igor Pokrajac are also expected to hook 'em up on the televised portion of the Dec. 4 fight card.

UFC 123: Joe Lauzon vs George Sotiropoulos on tap for Nov. 20

Lauzon-sotiropoulos_medium

There's a fantastic lightweight match-up brewing between up-and-coming division prospects Joe Lauzon and George Sotiropoulos, as the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veterans are currently in talks to throw down at the upcoming UFC 123 pay-per-view on Nov. 20 in Auburn Hills, MI.

MMAmania.com confirmed the pending match-up earlier today.

Lauzon (19-5) vaulted himself back into the 155-pound title hunt with a first round ass kicking of Gabe Ruediger at the UFC 118: "Edgar vs Penn 2" pay-per-view event last month in "Beantown."

It was an impressive rebound win for "J-Lau," who suffered just his second Octagon loss back in January after dropping a unanimous decision to the venerable Sam Stout at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" in Las Vegas.

Overcoming the Aussie could push the former computer geek into a rematch with Kenny Florian -- or perhaps even bigger and better things.

After getting bounced from TUF 6 by now-exiled Tommy Speer, Sotiropoulos (13-2) has been nothing short of unstoppable, including a unanimous decision win over fellow submission specialist Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" back on July 3.

The convincing win over "Batman" was his seventh straight. In fact, his only loss in the past five years was a disqualification to Shinya Aoki, after Sotiropoulos kicked the Tobikan in his little Judans.

I don't think it's a stretch to call this one an early candidate for fight of the night.

Rousimar Palhares doesn't want to hurt his opponents, he wants to finish them quickly

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 06:07 AM PDT

Palhares_medium

Props: Fighters Only

Quoteworthy:

“Murilo always told me to wait until the referee stops the fight. He had problems with [fake taps] in the past and Anderson almost had the same problem in his last fight. Its not that I want to hurt anyone but I am trying to be fast with my submissions so the referee needs to be fast as well, to stop the fight. My opinion is that the referee in my last fight was too far away and took too long to stop the fight. If he had been closer then he could have stopped it right away and then we would not even be having this conversation at all!”

Rousimar Palhares has faced criticism since his heel hook win over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111 where he was accused of holding the submission for too long after his opponent tapped. “Toquinho” makes it clear that he doesn’t want to hurt anyone, just to finish the fights and states that it’s up to the referee to stop the bout right away after the hit is all set. Palhares squares off Nate Marquardt at UFC Fight Night 22 to look for his fourth win in a row. Do you agree with him or do you blame him for holding the subs too long?

Bellator 30: Brent Weedman vs Jacob McClintock booked for Sept. 23

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 06:03 AM PDT

Bmc_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (September 07, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships today announced a welterweight match-up between explosive finisher Brent Weedman and Season 2 Welterweight Tournament veteran Jacob "Tic-Toc" McClintock for a spot in the upcoming Bellator Season 4 Welterweight tournament. The fight is slated to take place during Bellator's return to Louisville at Bellator 30 from Fourth Street Live! in Kentucky on September 23rd.

Weedman (16-5) has finished every one of his victories by KO or submission and enters the bout on an eight-fight win streak, but the Kentucky native isn't worried about personal records. For Weedman, it's all about winning the chance to compete in the Bellator Season 4 Welterweight tournament.

"I really try not to focus on any kind of streak I have going, good or bad," said a modest Weedman. "Obviously it's always nice to be on a run like this, but I try and focus on every individual fight as they come along, and right now that seems to be working for me. Win or lose, I try and learn from what I did wrong, so I can grow as a fighter."

The view is a little different for McClintock (6-1), who is coming off his first professional defeat at the hands of hard hitting Ryan Thomas via first round TKO at Bellator 15.

"Coming off a loss, I am pretty excited to get back in there and redeem myself," said an eager McClintock. "I've been training really hard for this fight. I'm working really hard on all aspects of my game - pushing my conditioning really hard."

If McClintock wants to get back into the win column, he may have to do it quick, as Weedman doesn't see the fight lasting very long.

"This isn't me being cocky at all, but I don't have many fights that go to the third round, so I see this one ending with me knocking him out early," said Weedman. "I just don't like to tip tap around, so if I see an opening, I'm going to take it."

Whichever way it goes, fight fans are in for an explosive bout.

"We're thrilled to have these two welterweights go head to head at a great venue like Fourth Street Live in Louisville ," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Adding this fight to an already loaded televised event is going to make for a great night of fights."

Tickets for the event - which will also be broadcast LIVE nationwide on FOX Sports Net along with action-packed highlight shows that will air on NBC Saturday nights - are on sale now at TicketWeb.com
