Vitor Belfort: 'Anderson Silva knows if I touch him he will fall and won't get up again'

“I want the belt. The belt belongs to Anderson today and I want to fight him. He cannot fight this year, but I won’t wait for him. I’m cheered up and training here in Las Vegas for November. It was the schedule they (UFC) gave me and now it’s time to expect it to take place. I know all of his game, I know all his jiu-jitsu, stand-up game, I know he likes spinning kicks and uses elbows. If I touch my hand on him, he falls and won’t stand on his feet anymore. If I get close like Chael Sonnen and Demian Maia did, my fire power is bigger than theirs. A fight is a fight and we know these are two champions fighting, two persons with conditions, so the most important is be smart in each second of the match for nothing goes wrong. But he knows that, if my hand touches him he won’t stay standing up. That’s not a promise, that’s a fact. I’ll go towards him, I know what I want, I’m focused and don’t doubt on what I can do. I’m very excited. Speaking about this makes me feel like fighting now (laughs)”.

Vitor Belfort squares off Yushin Okami at UFC 122 in November, but "The Phenom" maintains that reigning middleweight champion Anderson Silva is fresh on his mind. Normally a gentleman, Belfort decided to start to hype the much-expected match up, making sure he will do what nobody else in the division managed so far: To knockout "The Spider." Is "The Phenom that good on his feet to put Silva down with his fast hands or will it turn into just another repeat episode in which the champion ends up with the belt around his waist, continuing to etch his name in the MMA history books?

James Toney wants to fight at UFC 123 in Detroit

"If they want to sell any tickets in Detroit, they should put me on there. B---- a-- Rampage can't sell no tickets in my hometown."

Apparently he hasn't had enough. After getting manhandled by Randy Couture just last month at UFC 118, "Lights Out" wants another chance. The Michigan native claims that if the UFC wants to sell tickets to the event, they shouldn't count on "Rampage" Jackson to do it, but rather himself. Anybody want to see more of James inside of the Octagon? While it's highly unlikely we ever will, who would serve as an appropriate match up for Toney?

UFC Quick Quote: Josh Koscheck is prepared to fight off his back against Georges St. Pierre

"The lesson I learned was the fact that you got to become a more complete fighter.  You just can't rely on wrestling. You have to have wrestling defense. And Georges is definitely a strategist. He's going to come in with a good game plan, and I believe that he's going to come in with a different game plan. He's a smart guy. He has a lot of smart people around him... And I have to be prepared to fight off my back. I have to be prepared to fight this fight anywhere, in a bad situation. And there's a chance that I could be fighting off my back again in this fight because Georges is that type of athlete. He's very, very good. I got to be prepared to fight off my back... And I've seen a lot of his fights. I'm going to continue to watch his fights and study them. I'm going to have a great game plan and I'm going to come into this fight and come out with a victory come December."

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 13 conference call took place yesterday featuring coaches Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck. And aside from the awkward back-and-forth banter that took place between the two top welterweights, a bit of strategy for the fight was discussed. Koscheck admitted the fact that he realizes there is a very good chance that he could be on his back for much of the fight, just like their first bout at UFC 74. He says he's ready for it. Do you think he is? Is there any way that if Josh ends up on his back he'll walk away the victor? What are the keys to this match? Let's hear some strategy, Maniacs.

Bellator 30: Jose Vega vs Ed 'Wild' West on tap for Sept. 23

Vega-west_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (September 16, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships today officially announced a September 23rd Season 3 Bantamweight semi-final fight between the dynamic and well-rounded Ed "Wild" West and the fast-rising Jose Vega at Bellator 30, which will take place at Fourth Street Live! in downtown Louisville, KY.

"Both Ed and Jose won very exciting fights in the quarter-finals and I expect nothing different on September 23rd," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "We're excited to return to Fourth Street Live! with a great fight card for Kentucky fans."

Both fighters faced tough competition in their road to the semi-finals. West took on Bryan Goldsby, who was fresh off a convincing victory over WEC veteran Jeff Curran, at Bellator 27 in San Antonio earlier this month.

In what turned out to be a three-round battle, West was able to display his impressive striking skills through out the fight - continually peppering Goldsby with punches and kicks from all angles while mixing in spectacular submission attempts on his way to the unanimous decision victory.

With the win, West improved his professional record to 14-4 and his win streak to six straight.

In a rubber/grudge match between longtime rivals, Vega took on fellow Missouri native Danny Tims in Bantamweight quarterfinal action at Bellator 26. Vega was in trouble early, as Tims managed to drop him in the opening seconds with a vicious barrage of punches, but quickly recovered and utilized his superior wrestling base to turn the tide. The effort ultimately earned Vega a unanimous decision victory, which subsequently advanced him to the semi-finals.

Vega believes he will have a variety of avenues to victory over West when they meet in Louisville.

"I plan on determining were the fight goes," said Vega. "If he punches me in the face I can take him down and pound on him or put him to sleep, that's where my advantage is."

"He's a well rounded fighter but there are holes, he backs up with his chin up and hands down."

West believes he, in fact, holds the ultimate advantage in this fight.

"I actually think I match up with Vega a lot better than I did with Goldsby. This is a much better fight for me stylistically," said West. "I've fought a lot of good wrestlers but Vega rarely shoots anyway. I'll be in there staying busy on my feet. I'm training for a 15 minute war."

Tickets for the event - which will also be broadcast LIVE nationwide on FOX Sports Net along with action-packed highlight shows that will air on NBC Saturday nights - are on sale now at ticketmaster.com

"Go Team Bronx! We are a complete school. I wanted to show that not only do I have jiu-jitsu, but I have strikes too because I fight stand-up (against Escudero). I know I made a lot of mistakes in the stand-up, but I do my best to keep it going, I'm training hard and getting better. I want to fight with the best fighters. All my fights, I give my life, I give my heart, it doesn't matter who I fight."

Undefeated lightweight sensation Charles Oliveira (14-0), fresh off his "Submission of the Night" against Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 champion Efrain Escudero at UFC Fight Night 22 in Austin, Texas, is ready for whatever the promotion can throw at him as he plows through the crowded 155-pound division. "Do Bronx" is just 20-years-old and has already created quite a buzz for his performances and penchant for finishing his opponents. Does the UFC wait and slowly develop him like they did with Jon Jones? Or does he jump out of the frying pan and into the fire? Let's hear your fantasy match-ups for this talented Brazilian.

Bellator 31: Megumi Fujii vs Lisa Ward booked for Sept. 30

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 08:03 AM PDT

M-fuji_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (September 15, 2010) - The Bellator Season 3 Women's Tournament continues in Lake Charles, Louisiana as the undefeated #1 female fighter in the world Megumi "Mega Megu" Fujii (21-0) faces off against the fourth ranked 115 pounder and dangerous veteran submission specialist Lisa Ward (14-5-1) in semi-final action on September 30th to move one step closer to becoming the first ever Bellator Women's Champion.

The pair of top female fighters are far from strangers. In their only other previous meeting, Fujii ended the fight early with a controversial armbar submission. Nearly three years since the outcome, Ward still doesn't agree with the result.

"My loss to Megumi should have been a no contest," said Ward. "The fight was stopped because the referee thought I tapped and admitted he never actually saw it. I'm not sure what he was thinking, but I was defending properly and was in NO danger of submitting. Megumi is a great competitor, but in this fight, I'm going to play my game, and deliver her the first loss in her career."

The confidence Ward exudes may be from her impressive victory over the previously undefeated Aisling "Ash the Bash" Daly in the Quarterfinals of the Women's Tournament back at Bellator 26 in dominating fashion.

While slightly worried about Daley's perfect record heading into the fight, Ward took control of the fight right out of the gate, and didn't let up until the final bell sounded.
"I was a bit intimidated by her perfect record, but when I saw the caliber of her opponents I knew she was going to have a big test on her hands with me," said Ward. "No disrespect to any of her wins; I just feel the girls I have fought are on a whole different level. When I stepped in the ring, I became completely confident and knew she would have to kill me before I would lose."

The intimidation Ward felt may come into play again when she enters the ring against the world's top female fighter Megumi Fujii for a shot at the Bellator Women's Championship.

Fujii knows she has a target on her back, but she plans on using the pressure to her benefit when she steps in the ring.

"To be undefeated is a great challenge," said a modest Fujii. "It makes me train harder and I try to focus on being a better fight than my last fight. I use the pressure of my record to help take my fighting to the next level."

Dustin Hazelett meets Mark Bocek at UFC 124 in lightweight return

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:55 AM PDT

Hazelett01_medium

Dustin Hazelett will finally make his return to the lightweight division when he takes on Mark Bocek at the upcoming UFC 124 pay-per-view from the Bell Centre on Dec. 11 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

MMA Weekly brought word of the pending match-up earlier today.

After painful armbar submission wins over Josh Burkman at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 Finale and Tamdan McCrory at UFC 91, "McLovin'" suffered back-to-back knockout losses to Paul Daley at UFC 108 and Ricky Story at UFC 117.

The lanky and likable jiu-jitsu wizard now stands at 12-6 and 5-4 inside the Octagon. A return to 155-pounds could be a fresh start -- or the final nail in the coffin considering how unfavorably the promotion looks on fighters who drop three straight.

This will be Hazelett's first lightweight bout since UFC 67 back in 2007.

Standing in his way is Bocek (8-3), who was in cruise control over the past year and a half until 155-pound stalwart Jim Miller ended his three fight winning streak via unanimous decision at UFC 111 back in March.

Like Hazelett, the Canadian has a stellar ground game, ending 75-percent of his fights by way of tap, nap or snap -- but he may have met his equal (or better) in McLovin'.

UFC 124 will feature a rematch between division champion Georges St. Pierre and fellow Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 coach Josh Koscheck. "Rush" claimed a unanimous decision win over "Kos" when they first met at UFC 74: "Respect" in Aug. 2007.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this still-developing fight card.

Jim Miller's next fight? Don't expect any call-outs or (expletive) talking ...

Because that's not Miller's style, according to his post-fight comments, even if it keeps him from the lightweight title for at least another year...

"I think I'm a couple wins away [from a title shot]. There's still a couple of guys that have the recognition at the top of the divsion even with a couple of losses lately so I gotta keep fighting. It hasn't even been two years since I've been with the UFC so I'm just trying to fight as often as I can and fight the toughest guys I can ... It's not my style to start calling anybody out, I just have a ton of respect for my peers and the guys that train their asses off to step in the Octagon with me. I just try to keep it at that, respect them and not talk shit."

Make it 7-1 inside the Octagon and 18-2 overall for Jim Miller, who took a unanimous decision win over the dangerous Gleison Tibau at last night's UFC Fight Night 22 event in Austin, Texas. The Sparta native has only one blemish on his stellar UFC resume, a decision loss to the still-unbeaten Gray Maynard. Does this win finally put him on the map? Or is the 155-pound division just too crowded to put Miller in the top five?

Paul 'Semtex' Daley signs multi-fight contract with Strikeforce

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:15 AM PDT

Mma_daleyp_576_medium

The inevitable has come to fruition.

Paul Daley has signed on to fight for Scott Coker and the boys over at Strikeforce. As we originally reported back on Aug. 2, "Semtex" has agreed to a multi-fight deal and today the promotion has confirmed with MMAmania.com his addition to their growing welterweight roster.

The heavy-handed Brit has of course been looking for a new, more permanent home ever since delivering the cheap shot heard 'round the fighting world to Josh Koscheck following their UFC 113 bout where "Kos" took home a unanimous decision win and earned himself a shot at Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title later this year.

UFC President Dana White kicked him to the curb, essentially banning the welterweight striker from the Octagon for life, but Strikeforce apparently has no qualms in employing the controversial slugger.

Daley was last seen in action at Shark Fights 13 back on Sept. 11, missing weight and outpointing Jorge Masvidal in Amarillo, Texas. Prior to that he went "down under" for Impact FC 2: 'The Uprising,' finishing Daniel Acacio in the third round with a forehead-splitting elbow.

An opponent has yet to be named for "Semtex's" promotional debut with the San Jose-base organization, but you have to believe that within the time frame of this contract, Daley and Strikeforce bad boy Nick Diaz will evenutally meet.

While we probably won't understand half of the pre-fight trash talk, it is something we can all look forward to anyway.

Who do you want to see Daley mix it up with first? Tatame.com says it could be Evangelista Santos in November. Thumbs up or down?

The 'Great' Escape: Nate Marquardt denies greasing allegations following UFC Fight Night 22 win

And credits a "good sweat" for getting out of danger against Rousimar Palhares during last nights UFC Fight Night 22 post-fight press conference:

"It's kind of disappointing to have to try and defend yourself over something like that. I'm not a dirty fighter, and I don't cheat. I don't grease ... I didn't really know what he was doing, but I saw his hand was kind of pointing toward the ref or something. He took his eyes off me. Once he took his eyes off me, that's when I jumped in... I guess I was surprised, but at the same time, I was watching him the whole time for an opening. That was it ... I was very excited for the win, but that kind of took a little bit of it out of it for me ... Basically, I believe what happened was I had a good sweat going before the fight. He felt as I turned out of the ankle lock that it slipped a little bit, and he felt that I had greased or something, so I'm sure he was a little upset."

"Toquinho" was pounded out after a lame-duck attempt at protesting the "Great" escape and while he later apologized for his accusations, many fans still have their doubts about the tactics of the Greg Jackson camp after UFC 94's "Greasegate" back in July 2009. Was the Brazilian's reaction just sour grapes because he failed to hold the sub? Or is there more to the story? Let's hear your take on last night's bizarre finish.

To the tune of $40,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to five fighters on the card -- including two submission bonuses for two outstanding taps. Having said that, it should not surprise you which combatants are leaving "The Lone Star State" with a little extra green.

Fight of the Night — Jared Hamman vs. Kyle Kingsbury
Submission of the Night — Cole Miller, Charles Oliveira
Knockout of the Night — Brian Foster

Again, each fighter received $40,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.
