UFC Fight Night 22 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Marquardt vs Palhares'

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 02:44 PM PDT

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation today issued its list of medical suspensions for those who competed at the UFC Fight Night 22: "Marquardt vs. Palhares" event which took place on Sept. 15 from the Frank Erwin Special Events Center in Austin, Texas.

It was a clean sweep across the board as every fighter that saw action last Wednesday night will also see a medical suspension in one form or another.

The majority of suspensions were for precautionary reasons -- save for a couple of banged-up participants who must follow up with their doctors after taking abuse during the Spike TV telecast.

Heading up the list of the walking wounded is Jared Hamman, who joins Brian Foster on the sidelines for six months (pending medical clearance) after their performances on the evening's undercard.

Main event muscle-head Rousimar Palhares, along with veteran Forrest Petz, were both slapped with 30-day timeouts. But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC Fight Night 22 medical suspensions (courtesy of mixedmartialarts.com):

Suspended until 03/15/11:

Jared Hamman
Brian Foster

Suspended until 10/16/10:

Rousimar Palhares
Forrest Petz

Suspended until 10/07/10:

Rafael Natal

Suspended until 09/30/10:

David Mitchell

Suspended until 9/25/10:

Yves Edwards
Nate Marquardt
Efrain Escudero
Charles Oliveira
Jim Miller
Ross Pearson
Gleison Tibau
Cole Miller
Kyle Kingsbury
Tomas Drwal
Dave Branch
Rich Attonito
TJ Waldburger
John Gunderson

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 premieres to 1.6 million viewers

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 premiered this past Wednesday featuring coaches Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck with an average of 1.6 million viewers tuning in.

Spike TV officials reported the ratings earlier today.

The debut episode, as has been the case recently, saw potential "official" cast members fight to get on the show and into the house. 28 lightweights threw down in the most important bouts of their life with 14 of them coming one step closer to realizing their ultimate goal of becoming a UFC fighter.

The premiere ratings are in line with past seasons of TUF, all except of course TUF 10 which featured one Kimbo Slice and saw 4.1 million fights fans tune in who apparently couldn't help but see what the bearded brawler was all about.

TUF 12 will serve as the lead up to the welterweight title fight between GSP and Koscheck, which is set for UFC 124 on December 11 in Montreal.

Keith Jardine suspended 'indefinitely' for shoving referee at Shark Fights 13 (Video)

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 10:53 AM PDT

Mma_e_kjardinets2_576_medium

The "Dean" was a little too "mean."

As former UFC fighter Keith Jardine approached the cage to take on Trevor Prangley at Shark Fights 13 this past weekend, referee Steve Armstrong stood waiting to conduct the usual pre-fight inspection. But for some reason or another, Jardine shoved Armstrong aside as if to say, 'Don't touch me.' He likely mistook the referee for a fan, a mistake he would soon regret.

That kind of behavior isn't part of Keith's character outside of the cage, and as you'd expect, he quickly apologized for the incident once he realized exactly who he was pushing around.

But what was done was done, and "The Dean of Mean" had an indefinite suspension handed to him on the part of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Mr. Armstrong commented on the situation, where he said though he believes the whole thing was just a misunderstanding, it was surprising that a veteran of the game like Jardine would have this lapse in judgement.

"I think he was zoning. He was fixing to fight a big fight. I was trying to stop him, and he smirked and pushed me. I said, 'You push me again, you're DQ'd.' Then he patted my shoulder like he realized what was going on. I think he got caught in the moment... He's got a lot of fights, he should know better. There's no excuse but I didn't want to see him get suspended indefinitely. I just wanted to know, 'Hey, do you have a mouthpiece and a cup on?' In every fight that's checked, so this is nothing new to Keith. We're always going to look at your gloves and do those checks. That's all very standard, going through that checkpoint."

Frank Mir: 'If you make a mistake, Cro Cop can still kick your head into the bleachers'

Quoteworthy:

"Actually I am really excited about this one. I really look at it as another opportunity to fight a former PRIDE winner, he won their Absolute tournament in ’06, he was one of their top guys ... I think a lot of guys would actually rather to avoid CroCop at this point in his career, I think he doesn’t have the same notoriety that he had before. You hear people saying he doesn’t have what he used to have or he is slower now, he doesn’t have what he used to have in aggression and tenacity. But the bottom line is if you make a mistake he can still kick your head into the bleachers."

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is cautiously optimistic about his upcoming fight at UFC 119 with mixed martial arts legend and 2006 Pride FC Open Weight Grand Prix winner, Mirko Cro Cop. Naturally, Mir is aware that Cro Cop's best chance to win the fight, which will headline the show in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Sept. 25, is if he keeps it upright. Mir, meanwhile, is confident in his advantage on the ground. Does a Nogueira and Kongo display of hands leave Mir a little too confident these days, thinking he could stand with the former K-1-level kickboxer, or will he come to his senses on fight night and waste no time taking it to the ground?

Bellator 33: Roger Huerta won't let Eddie Alvarez 'kill his career' on Oct. 21

"I'm putting this in my mind that he's trying to go out and kill me, kill my career. I'm not going to let that happen. He's going to bring the best out of me and I'm going out there to try to knock him out and to finish him."

Former UFC 155-pound contender Roger Huerta knows this may be his last change at lightweight supremacy when he faces off against Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 33 on Oct. 21 in Philadelphia. "El Matador" was bounced from the lightweight tournament by Pat Curran earlier this year but got another crack at the champ when Lil' Frog was forced to bow out due to injury. Can Huerta follow up his bully beatdown with a career-defining performance in Philly? Or is Alvarez ready to show the world there's more to 155-pound greatness than just what's available in the UFC?

My first UFC event is probably one of the best nights of my life!

Obviously I was hoping for a pay-per-view caliber card, but  a "fight night" will definitely work. We got there real early so we could watch all the prelims and it was definitely worth it. There was only one lackluster fight where I wasn't entertained and that was the Dave Branch fight.

It was also really quiet during the fights, unless they were hitting each other or transitioning, probably the quietest sporting event I've been to. It did get louder when the main card started though.

I couldn't have asked for better seats either. They were right above the floor seats on first row with few obstructions blocking the way. And we were in a position where all the fighters and celebrities walked by before and after the fight.

Another thing that caught me off guard was how approachable the fighters were. They were more than happy to take pictures or sign autographs. The guy next to me was getting all of their autographs and Efrian Escudero was being rushed by staff, so he tossed him his hat and mouth guard.

Pretty gross -- but cool at same time.

So anyway, most of the fights were entertaining. I think all my main card picks lost with the exception of Nate Marquardt.  I wasn't expecting Cole and Jim Miller to dominate the striking. That Charles Oliveira guy looked really good too.

So the fights ended and we headed to the UFC afterparty on 6th street. This was definetly the highlight of my night. We got to hangout and get drunk with Gleison Tibau, "Stitch" Duran, Rafael Natal, Punk Ass, Herb Dean, Kyle Kingsbury, David Mitchell, Rich Attonito, Cole Miller (comes off as kind of a douche) and others.

We didn't find out that Arianny and Dana were having their own party until 20 minutes before closing, so needless to say I was pissed! But still an incredibly great night, and I think I might go to the next UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas or something.

If you ever go to a UFC event, find out where the afterparties are and you will have the time of your life!

UFC Quick Quote: Nate Marquardt welcomes a 'Great' match-up with Vitor Belfort or Wanderlei Silva

And tells Fighters Only he wouldn't mind throwing hands with Michael Bisping or Yushin Okami either...

"A guy like Vitor or Wanderlei or anyone else at the top would be a great match-up. A guy like Bisping or Okami too. I want the title I want the belt. I fell like I am still at the top of the division. I believe one fight with a top contender and I should be there."

Sounds like Nate Marquardt is ready for another shot at the title after disposing of stocky submission specialist Rousimar Palhares at Wednesday's UFC Fight Night 22 event in Texas. Of all the names he's mentioned, which one do you think would be a "Great" match-up? And will the results be any different if he gets a second go-round with Chael Sonnen or Anderson Silva?
