We're back again, giving away more free gear as yet another major mixed martial arts event approaches.

MMAmania.com is proud to announce a UFC 112: "Invincible" contest give-a-way currently underway and in effect until Saturday night (April 10) at 1 p.m. ET.

We will once again award several readers who enter the contest with Tokyo Five walkout t-shirts worn by many of today's top mixed martial artists. The grand prize winner gets a Tokyo Five tee signed by Renzo Gracie and a MUTEKI Duffel bag.

What do you have to do to win?

It's simple: Just provide your fight prediction for Renzo's upcoming bout against Matt Hughes on the main card of UFC 112 (ex. Gracie defeats Hughes via Armbar in Round 2 at 1:39; or Hughes defeats Gracie via TKO in Round 3 at 2:31).

So it's winner, round, method and time. One entry per reader ... so make it count! If you pick a decision be sure to include the official time, as well as guess the potential scores for each round (10-9, 10-9, 8-10, etc.)

And to be on the safe side, all entries that pick a decision win must include a tie-breaker pick from the Terry Etim vs. Rafael dos Anjos fight. Same criteria as above.

To enter, head over to the Tokyo Five Official Contest Page at  http://www.tokyofivebrand.com/mmamania or by clicking here to fill out your entry. Be sure to submit correct contact information so we can get a hold of you when you win.

Good luck!

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11: Episode 2 recap and discussion

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 06:47 PM PDT

Tuf11-2_medium

Episode 2 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 11 featuring Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz gets underway and the new recruits find their way to the house and take stock of their individual injuries.

After everyone gets settled in they head over to the "new and improved" UFC training center to have coaches Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz select their squads.

Tito wins the coin toss and opts to select the first fighter giving Chuck the ability to choose the first fight

The team breakdown is as follows:

Team Ortiz (Red):
Nick Ring
Kyacey Uscola
Kris McCray
Jamie Yager
Clayton McKinney
Chris Camozzi
James Hammertree

Team Liddell (Blue):
Joe Henle
Court McGee
Brad Tavares
Kyle Noke
Josh Bryant
Rich Attonito
Charles Blanchard

Hammertree calls Team Liddell "Team Willy Wonka" because so many of Liddell's fighters are short. Even Dana is shaking his head at some of Chuck's picks and as of now it looks like Tito may have the advantage. Dana pulls Chuck aside but he has no regrets.

Not yet.

"The Iceman" wants to take his squad and improve on the skills they already have. Helping him in that quest is John Hackleman, former boxing great Howard Davis Jr., and Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields (not yet seen).

"The Huntington Breach Bad Boy" wants his guys to train hard and get the most out of every training session. Along for the ride are Saul Soliz and jiu-jitsu coach Cleber Luciano.

Tito starts dogging one of his last picks, Clayton McKinney, to see if his shoulder injury will drive him to quit. Chris Camozzi is also hurting due to a mouth injury but he plans on sucking it up.

It's time for the fight announcement and not surprisingly Chuck goes after Clayton to see if he's got what it takes to overcome Kyle Noke. Ortiz immediately tells him "Takedown defense."

Brad Tavares starts a "brown" clique with McCray and Yager and their first order of business is to run through the house at 3am with air-horns. Kyacey and McKinney weren't amused. It carries over to the next day where more arguing ensues in the kitchen.

McKinney gets his MRI and the good news is he doesn't have a tear but does have a contusion. Simply put, he has a bruised shoulder bone and Tito won't let him milk it. The team wants to focus on his mental training and it ends with a Ortiz pep talk.

On the other side Kyle Noke is representing Greg Jackson by way of Australia. He looks to be putting in the work but he's already talking title shot so I don't know if he's supremely confident or just asking to be jinxed.

Chuck has a hankering to hit Tito after everything that was said in the press last year about an alleged intervention but is afraid of the "pussy" pressing charges.

For Tito's birthday they bring out a Chuck Liddell pinata stuffed with money. In retrospect it may be the only time we get to see Ortiz beating up his longtime nemesis.

Clayton McKinney is acting very grumpy in the locker room because of Yager's mouth. During the commercial break Rich Attonito shares his desire to silence him as well.

Prior to the weigh ins, coach Howard Davis thinks Noke is a lock. The Aussie weighs in at 186 to McKinney's 185.5 We cut to the day of the fight and with only seven minutes left in the show it's safe to say this isn't going to the judges.

Team Liddell's Kyle Noke (16-4-1) vs. Team Ortiz' Clayton McKinney (4-2)

Round 1: Low kick by Noke. McKinney answers. Clark Kent punch by McKinney followed by robotic feinting. Front kick lands for Noke. Hardly any action. High kick misses for Noke who charges and gets caught by McKinney from behind. They hit the floor and McKinney is on top. Noke looking for a triangle and secures it. McKinney taps.

Kyle Noke defeats Clayton McKinney via submission (triangle choke) R1

Afterward McKinney slams his own performance as "pitiful" and tries to walk out but Ortiz wants to cheer him up first by having him re-enact the move with another team member so that he can learn from the mistake. Good strategy but not so sure about the timing.

Noke is understandable happy in the locker room and Chuck is even happier to retain control. Dana still thinks Tito has the better team but concedes Chuck may have the better strategy.

Stay tuned next week for a "shocking announcement" and tensions boil over on Team Ortiz. Would it surprise you to learn that Jamie Yager is in the middle of it? Of course not.

See you next week!

UFC 112: 'Invincible' start time and viewing options

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 06:47 PM PDT

112-new_medium

Sure, there are some fight fans that know the schedule of upcoming mixed martial arts, and in particular UFC, events more than they know their significant other's work schedule.

But not everybody has a mind like a steel trap. That's where this post comes in hand.

Due to the exotic locale that is Abu Dhabi and the host city of UFC 112: "Invincible," questions have risen as to what exactly the start time is of this stacked card.

Worry not, Maniacs. We're here to officially let you know that you in fact have two opportunities to view UFC 112 this Saturday, April 10.

The event will air live on pay-per-view at 1 p.m. ET, 10 a.m. PT (9 p.m. local time). UFC 112 will then air again on pay-per-view during the promotion's regular time slot at 10 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. PT.

As to when and where you choose to watch UFC champions Anderson Silva and B.J. Penn defend their respective crowns, that is of course up to you.

But if you regularly frequent MMA websites, MMAmania.com is the only one that comes to mind at the moment, and monitor various MMA related twitter feeds such as this one, you might be best served ordering the pay-per-view when it airs live to prevent any potential results spoiling.

However, if your usual UFC viewing routine includes attending your local watering hole's viewing party, I suggest you spend your day gardening, swimming, fishing, sewing, or painting. Essentially, stay off your computer or mobile device, aside from visiting us naturally, to avoid coming across the results before you intend to.

So, there you have it. UFC 112: "Invincible" will air live at 1 p.m ET, 10 a.m. PT and again at 10 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. PT. Do with this information as you wish, just be sure not miss what will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable UFC events of 2010.

Janne Tulirinta out, Joe Duarte in against Carey Vanier at Bellator 13 on April 8

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 01:28 PM PDT

Joe-duarte_medium

Former U.S. Army Ranger Joe Duarte will be stepping in for Janne Tulirintaand to take on Carey Vanier at Bellator Fighting Championships' Season 2 lightweight tournament from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on April 8.

Tulirintaand was forced to withdraw from Thursday's event due to Visa issues.

From Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney:

"We are disappointed that Janne Tulirinta won't be able to participate in our tournament but are very fortunate that we were able to secure a very high-caliber fighter like Joe Duarte to step up so quickly. Joe's known for his standup game so his bout against Carey Vanier, a very talented wrestler, will be an interesting one. Joe was our first alternate at 155, and his opportunity came and he was ready. More importantly than any of that, Joe is an American hero who regularly put his life on the line while serving as an Army Ranger in Iraq. I am proud to welcome him to our organization."

Duarte, 26, is 5-1 in his mixed martial career and hasn't competed since a TKO victory over David Gardner at last year's War Gods event in Alpine, California.

He meets the 7-2 Vanier, who is the winner of six straight including a TKO win over Paul Mann at Shogun Fights I in Baltimore, Maryland last October.

DREAM 15: Nick Diaz vs Hayato Sakurai booked for May 30 in Saitama

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 12:34 PM PDT

Diaz-saku_medium

Fresh off his welterweight whooping of Marius Zaromskis back on January 30, Strikeforce 170-pound Champion Nick Diaz (21-7) is looking to add the chin of another DREAM star to his collection when he battles Hayato Sakurai (35-10-2) at the DREAM 15 event from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan on May 30.

GracieFighter.com confirmed the booking earlier today.

Diaz has been unstoppable since his Strikeforce debut back in 2009. After making a mockery of Frank Shamrock last April, the foul mouthed fight monger went on to dispose of Scott Smith and the aforementioned Zaromskis.

His win over "The Whitemare" nabbed him the vacant welterweight title and pushed his winning streak to six -- with all six ending by way of TKO or submission.

Sakurai may have the home field advantage, but he's definitely got his work cut out for him.

While "Mach" has been in the fight game nearly 15 years, he's currently on a two-fight skid, dropping a submission loss to Akihiro Gono at K-1 "Power of Courage" on New Year's Eve after getting obliterated by Marius Zaromskis at DREAM 10 back in July.

Still, the Japanese mixed martial arts pillar is a well rounded veteran who's fought some of the biggest names in the sport and should be considered a handful for anyone, including Diaz.

DREAM 15 is expected to host the opening round of the promotion's light-heavyweight tournament featuring Gegard Mousasi, Renato Sobral, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, and Christian M'Pumbu.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on this upcoming fight card as they develop.

UFC 112: Dave Davis vs Alexander Gustafsson?

Quoteworthy:

"I don't even know what my style is to tell you the truth. I definitely have a couple of different looks. The one you saw against Brian Stann, I call that ‘Phil.' It's very hard to finish, very rugged. The one I'm going to use in Abu Dhabi I call that ‘Dave,' it's more of a spring look, a little bit softer. I use it mostly just for catalogs and just a finesse kind of thing I do. I shouldn't even be talking about that yet, it's not even done yet ... You guys aren't going to want to call me Phil ‘Mr. Wonderful' anymore. It's going to be ‘Phil' and ‘Dave' and become two completely different people. I don't know what this joker is going to throw at me. I saw a training video of him throwing seven different kinds of smoke and that was in practice. The way I see, I'm not even going to play games with him. I'm going to go in there, get smooth on him, take him down nice and smooth lock up an arm triangle, maybe transition to armbar, bring him back up, knees, knees, knees, elbows, takedown, high kick, low kick, bada bing. Real solid technique stuff. That's all you're going to see out of me."

Up-and-coming light heavyweight prospect Phil, I mean uh, "Dave" Davis is unveiling a new look for his UFC 112 fight against Alexander Gustafsson when the two hook 'em up on the undercard in Abu Dhabi this Saturday (April 10). The artist formerly known as "Mr. Wonderful" was an impressive collegiate wrestler that has so far remained undefeated in his mixed martial arts endeavors (5-0) including his unanimous decision win over the venerable Brian Stann at February's UFC 109 event in Las Vegas. Is it too early to call him the future of the sport? Or should we wait and see if Dave is as good as Phil?

MMA Quick Quote: Mariusz Pudzianowski likes to hit big, soft people like Tim Sylvia

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 07:31 AM PDT

Pudz-sylvia_medium

"Tim Sylvia is already past his prime, so the only thing he thinks about is the paycheck after the fight. When I’ll take him down and start landing my bombs, he will lose every desire to get up. His handshake at the press conference made me realize that he has a very soft body. I like big and soft people, they are fun to hit. I have to be careful from his striking in the early minutes of the fight, but I am still very confident that it will be a great victory. In two years from now, I would love to fight Fedor Emelianenko. He will rip my head off if we fight today, but in two years it could be a different story. It will be very interesting to see the bookmaker's odds for that fight."

Five-time World's Strongest Man, Mariusz Pudzianowski, tells LowKick.com that he's going to have fun beating on former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia at the upcoming Moosin event on May 21 in Worcester. The Polish powerhouse has a lot to prove before he's considered a serious threat in this sport -- but that hasn't stopped him from eying a future fight with heavyweight deity Fedor Emelianenko. Anyone think the muscular menace has the chops to make it as a full-time fighter?

UFC 112 odds and betting lines for 'Invincible' on April 10

Yesterday I saw one of the millions (and millions) of MMAmania.com readers digging through his car's seat cushions trying to round up enough spare change to gas up his broken down Buick. I though he lost his job or was struck with financial hardship.

As it turns out, he simply failed to listen to Nostradumbass back at Fight Night 21.

Admit it, you saw the +220 on Stefan Struve and let the haterade get the best of you. Or maybe you thought Gomi would represent? Or that Siver was the "Real Deal?"

Well, you came up lame but you've got to walk it off because opportunities have arisen for the upcoming UFC 112 event from the Concert Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Remember that the "Invincible" Anderson Silva has been submitted before -- and Demian Maia is as good as they come on the ground. Anyone taking that line? No? Me neither -- but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

That's why they call them "upsets."

Anything is possible in this sport -- and those who lay down some cheddar on the underdogs come April 10 stand to make a healthy profit. Assuming you win, of course. Anyone thinking parlay? Take a look at the numbers and let's hear your play.

Astra: Three opening bouts added to Hidehiko Yoshida's farewell event on April 25

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 06:59 AM PDT

Astra_medium

The fight card for Hidehiko Yoshida's farewell event, Astra, is now complete with the addition of three opening fights.

Astra will take place at Nippon Budokan on April 25 and there has been no official announcement regarding the international broadcast of the event.

The first of three opening fights pits the DEEP veteran, Seigo (7-5) against Seiryu (0-1) in a heavyweight contest. In the bantamweight match, Yoshida dojo prospect and the winner of the inaugural edition of Sengoku's reality TV series, "Sengoku Gold Cup," Ryosuke Komori (4-2) takes on Pancrase veteran, Takumi Murata (7-11-6). Finally, Yusuke Sakashita (6-2), who trains out of Yoshihiro Akiyama's Team Cloud, faces the ZST veteran, Kenji Nagai (6-10-2).

On an interesting note, Takahiro Kokuho - the president of sports and entertainment management company, J-Rock that will host Astra - revealed at the press conference that current UFC middleweight, Yoshihiro Akiyama, was one of the prime candidates to face Yoshida on April 25.

The exclusivity clause of the fighter contract with UFC presumably nullified the effort to organize Yoshida-Akiyama for the main event of Astra and retirement bout of Yoshida.

According to Kokuho, the bout between Yoshida and Akiyama has been proposed in the past; however, it never came to fruition, as the talk between the fighters' management failed to advance beyond the possibility of the match.

Here is the current Astra line up:

Open-Weight Fight:
Hidehiko Yoshida vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura

Light Heavyweight Fight:
Enson Inoue vs. Antz “Notorious” Nansen

Welterweight Fights:
Yuya Shirai vs. Che Mills
Ryo Chonan vs. Jung Hwan Cha

Lightweight Fights:
Daisuke Nakamura vs. Ganjo Tentsuku
Jorge Masvidal vs. Naoyuki Kotani

Featherweight Fights:
Michihiro Omigawa vs. Micah Miller
Tatsunao Nagakura vs. Akihiko Mouri

Opening Fights:
HW: SEIGO vs. SEIRYU
MW: Yusuke Sakashita vs. Kenji Nagai
BW: Ryosuke Komori vs. Takumi Murata

Stay tuned to MMAmania for further news regarding Hidehiko Yoshida's retirement event, Astra.

Shinya Aoki: It is certain that if I lose, Japan will become a colony of U.S. MMA

Posted: 07 Apr 2010 06:34 AM PDT

Aoki-skirt_medium

Quoteworthy:

"Japan’s best comes to USA. This is amazing ... my technical side is evidenced by my long career. It is the same as my old fights so it does not need to be discussed. Instead, the most important point is this: ‘If Aoki loses, it is over for Japan. I love Japan and it is certain that if I lose, Japan will become a colony of US MMA. Some [fans] say that USA's MMA is the best but I do not worship U.S. MMA so this is big war to me, just like my fight against [Sengoku champion] Hirota [on New Year’s Eve]. Yes, this is a high risk, high return proposition. If I get the return, I give it to DREAM because I am a son of DREAM. The same as in the New Year's Eve fight I am thinking ‘OK, I kill you!' ... I can risk my life if needs be. I am a warrior.... I am really serious about MMA. So I do not talk about technique now, because this fight is not about technique but about instinct and heart! One tough guy will stand, another tough guy will fall. Everyone, look upon this scene."

DREAM Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki talks about defending his legacy, his country, his promotion and of course, his right to wear pants when he fights. "The Tobikan Judan" is hoping to follow up his bone-crunching win over Mizuto Hirota at FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009 with a big victory over Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez at "Saturday Night Fights" on April 17 in Nashville. If Aoki falls, does Japanese MMA fall with him? Or will "El Nino" be tapping before that ever comes to be?
