WEC 48 ratings on Spike TV reach 1 million for 'Aldo vs Faber' Posted: 27 Apr 2010 06:57 PM PDT The brandless WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber," which marked the first-ever pay-per-view (PPV) event for the Zuffa-owned promotion, reeled in 1 million viewers on Spike TV, according to figures released earlier today from the network. That might seem a bit low, considering that the two preliminary fights that aired -- Leonard Garcia vs. Chang Sung Jung and Anthony Pettis vs. Alex Karalexis -- were among the best fights of the night. In fact, Garcia-Jung, which earned "Fight of the Night," is an early contender for "Fight of the Year," while Pettis scored a nifty submission of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum to lead-in to the PPV broadcast. By comparison, the UFC-branded prelim specials often average about 400,000 more viewers. Nonetheless, April 24 was a great night of fights from start to finish at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California. WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo successfully defended his 145-pound belt in a dominating performance over hometown favorite, Urijah Faber. And lightweight champion Ben Henderson made quick work of Donald Cerrone with a first round submission in their rematch in the co-fatured fight of the night. Report: Jason MacDonald in for David Loiseau against John Salter at UFC 113 Posted: 27 Apr 2010 04:20 PM PDT Will the real opponent for John Salter please stand up? After Nick Catone was forced to bow out of their middleweight mash-up due to a back injury, former 185-pound number one contender David Loiseau was called up on short notice to take his place at UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun II" on May 8 from the Bell Centre in Montreal. Unfortunately the Quebec Athletic Commission had other plans. "The Crow" was denied a license to compete earlier today, prompting event officials to scour the Canadian fight scene for a middleweight competitor who knows his way around a cage. They didn't have to look far. Sportsnet.ca is reporting that UFC veteran and popular Canadian fighter Jason MacDonald (24-13) is getting the chance to resurrect his Octagon career a week from Saturday on his home turf -- though bout agreements have yet to be signed. "The Athlete" was released from the UFC last May (2009) after a nearly three-year career inside the Octagon. MacDonald was halfway through a four-fight contract signed the previous September and even had the chance to be immortalized courtesy of a Round 5 action figure. Unfortunately the Canadian had been inconsistent during his tenure with the world's largest fight promotion, going 5-5 and losing two straight, including a dreadful performance against Nate Quarry at UFC 97: "Redemption" that likely prompted his walking papers. MacDonald was never able to gain any traction in the 185-pound division since bursting onto the scene in 2006 with back-to-back submission wins over Ed Herman and Chris Leben. Still, he brings a well rounded arsenal to the table and has recently assembled a three fight winning streak in smaller promotions. And since he's already experienced the highs and lows of a UFC career, you can bet he'll be looking to make a major statement on May 8. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on this still-developing story. |

UFC Quick Quote: B-kok! Randy Couture ain't no thing but a chicken wing! Posted: 27 Apr 2010 11:48 AM PDT
Geriatric boxing blowhard James Toney tells Fight Hype that he's not playing any "goddamn games" against former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Randy Couture in their planned UFC 118 bout on August 28 in Boston. "Lights Out" has very little going for him except the help of Juanito Ibarra, perhaps best known as the former trainer of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. The NABO heavyweight boxing champion has called out everyone from Chuck Liddell to Brock Lesnar, citing his desire to tests himself against "the best." You know the old saying, be careful what you wish for. (FanPost edited and promoted to front page by MMAmania.com) |
Shine Fights: 'Krazy Horse' in for Assuncao; Azevedo vs George added to 'Worlds Collide' Posted: 27 Apr 2010 11:47 AM PDT Miami, FL ( USA ): Shine Fight Promotions (Shine Fights) today announced an exciting undercard matchup to the already stacked "WORLDS COLLIDE: MAYORGA VS. THOMAS" pay-per-view fight card, as PRIDE veteran Luciano Azevedo will tangle with rising young star Zac George. This exciting bout will complement the other highly-anticipated bouts that are already a part of "WORLDS COLLIDE." Luciano Azevedo (16-8) is known for being the only MMA fighter to defeat dominant WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, who successfully defended his belt this past weekend. Over the course of his seven-year professional career, the veteran Azevedo has fought all over the world, making a name for himself due to his unrelenting determination and his obvious love for fighting. A well-rounded fighter, much of Azevedo's success has come due to his dominant ground game; twelve of his sixteen wins have come by way of submission. Regardless of whether his fights go to the ground or not, one thing fans are guaranteed when they watch Azevedo fight is fireworks, as he leaves it all in the ring each time he goes to battle. "An MMA fight to me is just like an action movie without being edited," said Azeredo recently. "I want to show everybody that MMA is not a street fight; it's an art. My performances are never boring, so I think I have a lot to show the fans." Standing across the ring from Azevedo on May 15th will be Zac George (19-3 with 16 finishes). George is a seasoned striker with a strong ground game. Throughout his young career, he has demonstrated time and time again that he is capable of ending his fights with his relentless striking and his explosive submissions. Currently riding a six-fight winning streak, the Team Quest product is excited about the opportunity to face a world class fighter like Azevedo. "He's probably the best fighter I've faced so far. I've fought a lot of guys with skills, but they lacked a well-known name. With Azevedo, he's got both. He's legit, and I'm excited to have such an awesome opportunity." A victory over the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Azevedo could propel him towards a possible title fight in the near future. In addition to the Azevedo-George bout, Shine Fight also announced a substitution to another recently revealed bout. News of a scrap between Luiz "The Joker" Azeredo and Junior Assuncao was released last week. Unfortunately, Assuncao suffered an injury, and has had to be replaced. Now fighting Azeredo will be well-known MMA star Charles "Kid Khaos" Bennett (22-16-2). Bennett is a longtime-veteran of MMA who has fought some of the biggest names in the sport, including current StrikeForce fighter K.J. Noons, Japanese superstar Tatsuya Kawajiri, former PRIDE champion Takanori Gomi and former WEC featherweight kingpin Urijah Faber. A colorful character that has made a name for himself for both his exciting fights and unorthodox lifestyle, "Kid Khaos" is also known for his claims that ground fighting "is like making love...it's not real fighting." Suffice to say he will bring a very different approach to Azeredo than Assuncao would have. About the fight, Bennett says, "I win, he lose. I'm training, so we'll see what training is doing. I was winning without training, so we'll see what I can do now." Luiz "The Joker" Azeredo stands as one of only four men to defeat the current pound-for-pound king and UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Following his professional debut in 1997, Azeredo has stepped up the competition one fight after another, continuing to put on acclaimed performances each time he steps into the ring. "The Joker" holds an impressive win over the UFC's Paul Daley, a victory which ranks as one of his crowning achievements. He is also known to fight fans for participating in one of the most memorable PRIDE bouts in history alongside fellow Shine fighter Luiz Firmino. These two bouts join the previously announced 160-pound catchweight main event between former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga and MMA veteran Din Thomas, as well as a co-main event bout between Murilo "Ninja" Rua and Canadian warrior Travis "The Gladiator" Galbraith. In addition, a welterweight contest between MMA veteran Nick "The Goat" Thompson and Brazilian star Eduardo Pamplona will entertain Shine fans. Also, a surefire ground war is set to take place at 175 pounds between 2009 ADCC Absolute Champion Braulio Estima and former Olympic Judo competitor Rick Hawn, and grappling specialists Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferrara and Jamal "The Suit" Patterson will also do battle. "WORLDS COLLIDE" is taking place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville , NC , and will be beamed on PPV on cable and satellite in the United States and Canada . The event will be broadcasted in High-Definition, and it will be available in both English and Spanish (where available). The broadcast will start at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT and will be produced by MultiVision Media, Inc. There will be a 30-minute countdown show prior to the live event at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT. The event will be available for $29.95. Tickets may be obtained by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420, or online at www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the Crown Coliseum Box Office. Quebec denies David Loiseau license to fight John Salter at UFC 113 in Montreal Posted: 27 Apr 2010 10:32 AM PDT Some guys just can't catch a break. The Quebec Athletic Commission has denied Montreal native David Loiseau a license to compete against John Salter at the upcoming UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun II" event at the Bell Centre on May 8, according to The Canadian Press. A reason for the denial is unknown at this time however "The Crow" did not take the news well, as he vented on his official Facebook page:
Loiseau was widely expected to replace the injured Nick Catone; however, the UFC did not officially announce his participation. Since getting battered and beaten for five rounds by then-champion Rich Franklin at UFC 58: "USA vs. Canada" back in 2006, Loiseau has struggled against adequate competition to regain his top form. In fact, he's lost every UFC bout since (two) and four of his last nine bouts. After stringing together three straight wins, Loiseau was invited back to the promotion to take on Ed Herman at UFC 97: "Redemption" last year; however, he was thoroughly defeated in a lopsided unanimous decision. The Canadian with Haitian roots most recently stopped Chester Post via first round technical knockout at MFL 2: "Battleground" earlier this year. "Crow" fans were almost as excited as he was to see him get one more chance inside the Octagon -- but as of now, it looks like it wasn't to be. Fans who wish to contest his denial can send a respectful protest email to the commission: at racj.plainte@racj.gouv.qc.ca. Facebook fans can also join a support group on the popular social networking site here. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on this unfortunate story as they develop. |

British brawler Paul Daley has an unflattering skill assessment of perennial welterweight contender, Josh Koscheck, who he meets at the upcoming UFC 113 event from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 8. "Semtex" is as confident as they come and the heavy-handed welterweight striker has been able to back it up with two lethal performances since making his promotional debut. He torched the title hopes of Martin Kampmann with a first round technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" and then brutalized grappling whiz Dustin Hazelett at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" with a crushing knockout in his most recent performance. Is "Kos" the final hurdle before a 170-pound title fight? Or is Daley in for a rude awakening in Montreal? |

Josh Grispi: 'The WEC likes to just throw me in there with the sharks every time' Posted: 27 Apr 2010 07:13 AM PDT Props: Boston Herald Quoteworthy:
Fast-rising featherweight prospect Josh Grispi (13-1) looks to continue his ascension to the top of the 145-pound rankings when he battles fellow up-and-comer L.C. Davis at the WEC 49 event scheduled for June 20 at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. "The Fluke" hasn't seen the inside of the cage since making quick work of fading legend Jens Pulver at WEC 41: "Brown vs. Faber 2" last June and can probably blame his nine-fight winning streak and undefeated WEC resume as the reason for getting such stiff competition time and time again. Anyone besides Nostradumbass think this young gun has the tools to make it to the top? |

Jay Silva returns to face Tim Williams at Matrix Fights II on June 11 in Philadelphia Posted: 27 Apr 2010 05:54 AM PDT Matrix Fights (www.MatrixFights.com) formally announced Monday that its second ever event is now scheduled for the legendary "The Arena" in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, June 11. Coming off a sellout crowd in its debut event this past February, the promotion will look to continue to build on its reputation as one of the fastest growing promotions in the United States by featuring the East Coast return of UFC veteran Jay Silva as he takes on blue chip prospect Tim Williams in a middleweight contest. Silva now resides in Huntington Beach, California but began his amateur mixed martial arts career in New Jersey. A bouncer at several popular New York City nightclubs, Silva accumulated a large fanbase and emerged as an underground legend. The Brazilian-born fighter transitioned from being an underground legend to a mainstream figure after building a respectable 5-1 record as a pro and landing a multi-fight contract with the UFC in 2009. Despite having gone 0-2 during his brief stint with the UFC, Silva made a name for himself by going the distance with middleweight standouts Chris Leben and C.B. Dollaway. "Silva's evolution from an East Coast-based amateur to a UFC-caliber middleweight has been nothing short of remarkable," said Matrix Fights President Jimmy Binns Jr. "Jay was already a beloved figure on the New Jersey MMA scene before going to the UFC. But he's more popular than ever since making it to the big show. We're happy that we're going to give fans in the Tri-State area their first chance to see Jay since making it to the UFC." Silva, who is drawing interest from several major promotions, could be just one big win away from returning to the big show. Standing in his way is one of the fastest rising middleweight prospects in all of MMA, Tim Williams. Despite elite-level jiu-jitsu credentials, Williams' emergence as one of the top unsigned prospects in MMA had been considered improbable. Several years ago the Maryland native nearly lost his life in an auto accident that has left permanent scarring to portions of his face. Then, just last year, Williams was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and his promising career was thought to be at a premature end. Through all of his life-threatening battles, Williams has persevered and has achieved excellence in the cage; first as an amateur compiling a perfect 6-0 record and now as a pro, having gone 3-0 with three first round submissions. "I am not sure if you are going to find a more inspirational fighter in MMA than Timmy Williams," remarked Matrix Fights promoter Phil Migliarese. "Because of the things Tim has experienced in his life outside of the cage, it has made him fearless inside of it. Usually, you don't see a 3-0 prospect accepting a fight against someone as experienced and dangerous as Jay Silva. But anything that Tim might experience in the cage is secondary to what he has endured outside of it." These days fighters with less than five fights rarely show up on the radars of major national MMA organizations such as the UFC, Strikeforce, and the Bellator Fighting Championships. However, an upset victory for Williams could expedite his ascension through the ranks and land him on a big show sooner rather than later. "Matt Makowski vs. LeVon Maynard was a tremendous main event for our first show," began Binns. "However, I think being able to bring Jay and Tim together sends a message to our fans that we're going to deliver a show that at worst is as good as the first and potentially even better. Both Jay and Tim will have a lot at stake on June 11 and the victor is going to walk away with more than just their win bonus." In addition to Silva vs. Williams, Matrix Fights II will also feature Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Tim Carpenter competing for the first-time ever in his native Philadelphia. Williams, who trains at Balance Studios and is one of the best unsigned light heavyweights in the world will put his unblemished 5-0 record on the line against New York native Guybson Sa. Sa has just one pro fight on his resume but it was a memorable victory. Facing the vastly more experienced Ryan Contaldi, who was 5-2 at the time, Sa defeated the more experienced fighter in less than two minutes after executing a triangle choke. Matrix Fights II will feature five pro fights and seven amateur contests with additional bouts set to be announced in the coming weeks. For ticket on-sale information as well as updates to the fight card, please visit MatrixFights.com. *** *** *** *** ****
