Bellator 15 results: Hornbuckle, Thomas, Pitbull and Carl all victorious

Bellator_medium

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (April 22, 2010) – Three dominant first-round wins by Dan Hornbuckle, Ryan Thomas and Patricio Pitbull – as well as a hard-fought split-decision victory for U.S Army Sgt. Steve Carl – made for another exciting Bellator Fighting Championships event Thursday night at the Mohegan Sun resort and casino.

The action, which was broadcast live nationwide on FOX Sports Net, completed the quarterfinal rounds in Bellator’s welterweight and featherweight tournaments and added to the already impressive resumes of all four winners.

The most exhilarating 15 minutes of the night came during an all-out battle between Carl and California striker Brett Cooper (11-6) that ultimately ended with Carl winning via split decision, much to the capacity crowd’s displeasure. The fight tested the stand-up and ground games of each fighter, but seemed to shift toward Cooper’s favor late in Round 3 when he took Carl down and nearly knocked him out with brutal ground-and-pound as the clock expired.

Afterward, even Carl himself seemed unsure of the judge’s decision.

"I wasn’t too sure about that fight," said Carl, who improved his pro record to 13-1. "I wasn’t the happiest with my performance tonight. The fans saw the last minute-and-a-half of Round 3 and it was all Brett. It definitely could have gone either way."

Cooper, meanwhile, maintained that the decision should have been his.

"I don’t know what to say besides I thought I won," he said simply.

Earlier, in the night’s Main Event, Hornbuckle improved his impressive pro record to 20-2, making quick work of Midwest regional circuit star Tyler Stinson (16-6), finishing him just 2:03 into round 1 via triangle choke. The commanding performance (which took place on the first anniversary of Hornbuckle’s marriage to his wife Melody) advanced him to the semifinal round of Bellator’s welterweight tournament and reaffirmed his status as one of the tournament’s favorites.

"Lyman Good was in my place last year, so hopefully he knows that I’m on the path to get him," Hornbuckle said as Good, the reigning Bellator welterweight champion, looked on from cage-side seats. "I want that title … I’m comin’ to get him."

Before that, the second fight of the night featured another dominant performance, this one by Thomas, who was selected earlier this week as a last-minute replacement for Jim Wallhead. Last week, at Bellator 14 in Chicago, Thomas lost via a controversial referee stoppage to U.S. Olympian Ben Askren and begged Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney for a second chance.

He made the most of the opportunity Thursday night.

After the previously undefeated Arizona Combat Sports product Jacob "Tick-Tock" McClintock (5-1) took his back early on in the fight, Thomas slipped out of a rear-naked choke attempt, took the dominant position on the ground and eventually finished McClintock with impressive ground-and-pound.

The win sets up a rematch between Thomas and Askren in the Bellator welterweight tournament semifinals on April 20th at the Verizon Theatre in Dallas.

"I have a loss of my record that I don’t deserve," Thomas declared afterwards. "Ben, you’ve been running your mouth … Let’s do it!"

In the first fight of the night, in a quarterfinal match-up in Bellator’s lightweight tournament, Pitbull, the Brizilian jiu-jitsu black belt used his impressive BJJ skills to submit Canadian up-and-comer and former paratrooper William Romero (5-1) in a dominant performance.

"I was looking for the knockout," Pitbull said through a translator in a post-fight interview with Bellator color commentator Jimmy Smith. "But I saw the leg and I saw the foot and it went good … it was perfect."

The win improves Pitbull’s pro record to 13-0 (with 10 of those wins coming via KO or submission) and sets him up for a semifinal matchup with fellow Brazil native and jiu-jitsu specialist Wilson Reis (10-1).

"It’s going to be an awesome fight – jiu-jitsu versus jiu-jitsu," Pitbull said. "But I’m going for the knockout … I want to knock him out."

Fans who missed the action can watch all the action this weekend during special highlight shows on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2. Bellator’s second season continues next Thursday night, April 29th, from the Kansas City Power and Light District in Kansas City, Mo. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Kenny Florian vs Gray Maynard 'signed' for UFC 118 in Boston on Aug. 28

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 04:52 PM PDT

Florian-maynard_medium

Two-time number one lightweight contender Kenny Florian today confirmed a previous Boston Herald report that he will indeed collide with Gray Maynard (9-0) at UFC 118, which is tentatively scheduled for the TD Garden in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 28.

"Ken-Flo" shared the good news on ESPNs "MMA Live" earlier this afternoon, saying he signed the dotted line to take on "The Bully," who is perhaps the last remaining threat at 155-pounds.

Naturally, this makes the rematch between former UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn and newly-minted division kingpin Frankie Edgar all the more likely in the near future ... perhaps in the night's main event.

Florian has been to the mountain top twice before. First against Sean Sherk in a five round unanimous decision loss at UFC 64 in 2006 and then most recently at UFC 101 in 2009 when he was choked out by ex-champ BJ Penn in Philadelphia.

He's remained unbeaten in eight other contests following his loss to "The Muscle Shark."

Like Florian, Maynard has been a handful for the lightweight division since graduating the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). "The Bully" is perfect through nine fights and even has a unanimous decision win over current champion Frankie Edgar.

It's likely that the winner of this contest will be next in line for a shot at the crown -- but will it be against "The Prodigy" or "The Answer?" Time will tell.

Mike check: MMAmania.com WEC 48 interview exclusive with Mike Brown

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 01:41 PM PDT

Brownint_medium_medium

WEC 48 is headlined by what many people are calling the most anticipated fight in the history of the featherweight division: Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber.

And that's just fine with former division champion Mike Brown.

Never one to bask in any glory or partake in much of the pre-fight hype, "MTB" is perfectly happy standing out of the limelight and approaching this fight without all the usual fanfare.

Just don't think for one second that he doesn't plan on reclaiming what was once his, the WEC featherweight belt.

First order of business is getting past Manny Gamburyan, a fighter who since coming over from the UFC has gone 2-0 -- and looked pretty good doing it.

Before he embarks on his journey back to the top of the featherweight mountain, Mike took some time to talk to MMAmania.com about his collection of fight memorabilia, staying as active in MMA as he can and what he needs to do against "Manvil" to earn another shot 145-pound gold.

Have a look:

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Before we talk about your fight with Manny Gamburyan, I have to ask you about this video I saw of you giving a house tour to purefight.org. Have you heard from PETA yet for shooting your dog Little Gaga with potato pellets?

Mike Brown: [laughs]. She's alright. It was just soft pieces of potato. She's fine. It's all good.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): You also showed off quite a collection of MMA memorabilia in that video. Do have a favorite piece?

Mike Brown: I gotta say the autographed Mark Coleman poster I just got. It's pretty funny. [Coleman autographed it to Brown with his now infamous quote directed at Tito Ortiz following his UFC 109 loss to Randy Couture]. Other than that, some of the old Pride FC posters I have are pretty cool.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): I know at the time you didn't yet have a Mike Brown doll. Do you own one now?

Mike Brown: I do have one now. My girlfriend got me one. It's a pretty neat thing to own.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Alright, let's get a bit more serious here. This is going to be your third fight since November, a span of only five months. Is that by choice? And if so, do like that? Are you comfortable being that active?

Mike Brown: Yeah, absolutely. After I lost [to Aldo at WEC 44] I couldn't get back in the cage soon enough. I wanted to hurry up and get back in the win column. I can't stand having a loss on my record. It's disgusting.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Are you still getting in solid eight or so week camps despite having your recent fights so close together?

Mike Brown: Oh yeah. Eight weeks is what I like to do. Even then, I tend to over train. I usually peak at about four or five weeks and I have to slow it down a bit. Now I'm hitting my peak again. It's been a good camp. No injuries. I'm ready to roll.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): This is going to be your second straight fight in Sacramento not fighting Urijah Faber. You were public enemy number one there for a while, but last time out it seemed as though the crowd warmed up to you some. Do you think you've won those fans over?

Mike Brown: Definitely. A lot of it is just them getting familiar with me. They were standing behind their guy Urijah, and I respect that. But I'm 3-0 in Sacramento. I'm big in that place [laughs].

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): I'm sure you've had to address this plenty of times, but let me get your opinion on the WEC on pay-per-view. Are you a fan of their decision to go this route, or would you rather be fighting in front of what would surely be more eyeballs on the WEC's regular home, Versus?

Mike Brown: This is what we need to do. It's where the money can be made and where we can generate bigger paychecks for the fighters. I'm no millionaire, that's for damn sure. I think this is the best thing for our future. We need it for our growth.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Is there any extra pressure for you being on the first WEC pay-per-view card?

Mike Brown: No. I'm just approaching it like any other fight. The way I look at it is the only fight that matters is the one right in front of you. Nothing in the future, and nothing in the past. Each fight is so important. It goes on your record forever. I'm always telling myself if I can just win this fight, I'll be fine. And it's the same thing with this fight.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): There's been a lot of talk in the MMA community about the WEC's transformation to pay-per-view and whether they're risking brand confusion with some of the moves Zuffa has made. In particular, Dana White has stated the he will serve as the promoter for the fight, not WEC GM Reed Harris. Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan will be handling the play-by-play duties instead of Todd Harris and company, and Bruce Buffer will be announcing the fight card in place of Joe Martinez. What do you think of those changes? Are you surprised that they would make those moves if their intentions are to build the WEC brand?

Mike Brown: I think it'll be nice. I'm happy with it. For a while it looked like they didn't know exactly what they were going to do with the WEC. If they were going to keep building us up or if we were going to just kind of fold into the UFC. But it looks like they want to make this thing huge. They want to blow it up. And I think this is a good step in that direction.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Alright, let's get to your opponent Manny Gamburyan. He's pretty well known to fight fans having competed on The Ultimate Fighter and in the UFC. He recently came over to the WEC and has gone 2-0. He just beat Leonard Garcia, who is of course one of your many victims. But for those people who may not be too familiar with him, break down his game for a minute.

Mike Brown: He's tough man. He hits hard. He swings pretty wild, but he's got submissions. Good leg locks, good guillotines, good kimuras. That's his thing. And obviously he's a judo guy. It's an interesting match up of contrasting styles. It's always fun for people to see two different style fighters go at it.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): To your point about Gamburyan being a judo guy, that's definitely his bread and butter. Have you worked a lot with judo specialists down at American Top Team (ATT) in preparation for this fight?

Mike Brown: Yeah, we've got some guys in the gym whose specialty is judo so I've been working real tightly with them.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Where do you see this fight taking place, on the ground or more on the feet? A better question might be where would you like to see this fight take place?

Mike Brown: I'm gonna try to keep it up and see if he can take me down. That's what I'm aiming for.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Other than judo, where do you think he holds any advantages over you, and vice versa?

Mike Brown: Well yeah, obviously judo is his game so he has the advantage there. But other than that, I'd like to think I have him beat everywhere else. I think I'm the more complete fighter and just a better fighter overall. But only time will tell if that's the case. I don't like to give predictions; we'll just see what happens when we get in there.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Do me a favor and break down the WEC 48 main event, Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber. You've been in the cage with both guys. You had great success against Faber, but not so much against Aldo. Who do you think takes that one?

Mike Brown: That's a tough one to call. Those are two world-class fighters. Look at the Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn fight; it's very hard to predict winners these days. If I had to choose one I would say Aldo just because he beat me up and I beat up Urijah. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Bear with me here for a second. Hypothetically speaking, assuming you get by Manny, which of course is no easy task, you're likely to be in line for a shot at getting your belt back. Would you rather fight one guy over the other, or is it just all about becoming champion once again?

Mike Brown: Well, I absolutely want my belt back, but I want to fight Aldo again, that's for sure. He's the guy that beat me and I want to avenge that. If Urijah beats Aldo, and let's say for the moment that I beat Urijah again and get my title back, people will still say, ‘well Aldo beat him, he isn't as good as Aldo,' you know? I don't have anything to prove with Urijah but I have a lot to prove with Jose Aldo.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): That's all I have for you Mike. Thanks so much for your time and good luck at WEC 48. Any sponsors you'd like to shout out? Do you have a website where fans can get in touch with you?

Mike Brown: Thank you. Fans can check out my website at mikethomasbrown.com. And I always gotta thank my sponsors at TapouT, Champion Nutrition, Bushmaster Firearms, and of course my training partners and coaches over at American Top Team who got me to where I'm at today.

UFC on Versus 2: Joe Stevenson vs Takanori Gomi planned for Salt Lake City on August 1

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 12:03 PM PDT

Stevenson-gomi_medium

An interesting lightweight battle between Takanori Gomi and Joe Stevenson is in the works for a 155-pound scrap at UFC on Versus 2. The card is set to go down on August 1 from Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

MMAmania.com recently confirmed the match up with a source close to the situation.

Both fighters are coming off unimpressive showings resulting in defeat. Gomi's much-celebrated debut with the UFC at UFC Fight Night 21: "Florian vs. Gomi" left a lot to be desired as the former Pride FC champion was thoroughly outworked and outskilled before succumbing to a rear-naked choke in the third round.

"The Fireball Kid" had gone just 2-2 over the last two years prior to the Florian fight while mainly competing for Sengoku, effectively dimming the shine of what has been a stellar career. A loss against "Joe Daddy" could very well indeed spell the end for Gomi as a competitive top-tier lightweight fighter.

Stevenson is coming off a loss to fast-rising prospect George Sotiropoulos at UFC 110: "Nogueira vs. Velasquez." Known for his high-quality grappling skills, Joe was dominated by the Australian in every capacity, including on the ground en route to dropping a one-sided unanimous decision.

Before that bout "Joe Daddy" looked to have righted the ship reeling off two consecutive wins over Nate Diaz at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale and Spencer Fisher at UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun" after dropping back-to-back contests to Kenny Florian at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" and Diego Sanchez in the main event of UFC 95.

The loser of this fight will undoubtedly have a steep hill to climb in order to get back into contention in the UFC's deep lightweight roster.

MMAmania.com will be your place for all things UFC on Versus 2. Keep it locked.

Strikeforce Challengers adds Lindland vs Casey and Bowling vs Voelker to May 21 event

Strikeforce is starting to round out their fight card for the upcoming "Challengers" event on May 21, set to go down from the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon, live via the Showtime network.

Up-and-coming middleweight Kevin Casey (3-1) will try to make a name for himself against former Olympic wrestling silver medalist and longtime mixed martial arts veteran Matt Lindland (21-7).

"The Law" had a rough 2009, dropping back-to-back losses to Vitor Belfort (Affliction) and Ronaldo Souza (Strikeforce). "King" Kevin on the other hand is the winner of three straight, including two consecutive submission finishes.

Joining the fray is undefeated rising star Roger Bowling (7-0) making his Strikeforce debut opposite hard-hitting brawler Bobby Voelker (21-7).

"Relentless'' has been on an absolute tear, creaming all seven opponents he faced from 2007-10. Only one of those contests made it out of the first round. "Vicious" hopes to break that streak with his experience and grappling skills.

Strikeforce Challengers 8 will also feature unbeaten welterweight Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley (6-0) against Nathan Coy (8-2) while Kerry Vera and Julianna "The Venezuelan Vixen" Pena (2-0) collide in a battle of 135-pound female prospects.

Dana White: 'Jake Shields is definitely going to leave Strikeforce -- and he's definitely coming to the UFC'

Quoteworthy:

"Jake Shields is definitely going to leave Strikeforce, and he's definitely coming to the UFC. First of all, they put all of their eggs in the Dan Henderson basket. They went out and acquired him and thought he was worth a lot more money than we were willing to pay him. They went out and paid him more money than they can afford to. They never respected Jake Shields, who is their champion. They didn't even have him in their commercials for the fight. Then the fight happens and Jake Shields wins. They were like, 'Oh my God. He won. What do we do?' I think they sent (Miller) in there to challenge him, so that if Jake leaves, it looks like he doesn't want to fight Miller. That‘s not the way you do it. You let the winner speak, then you ask him at the end about whether he‘s willing to fight Miller. But that's them. They're a Podunk, unknown, small-time organization. There shouldn‘t have been that many guys in the cage in the first place!"

UFC President Dana White is definitely using the word "definitely" again, this time in predicting the definite future home of Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields. The grappling wizard gave UFC import Dan Henderson a rude awakening at last Saturday's "Nashville" event to retain his title and dramatically increase his market value. The San Jose-based fight promotion is running out of time to exercise their remaining fight option and could be looking at a hefty price tag to re-sign him and keep him out of the UFC. Definitely.

UFC 113: Tim Hague replaces Chad Corvin against Joey Beltran on May 8

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 06:35 AM PDT

Hague-beltran_medium

Former King of the Cage (KOTC) heavyweight menace Tim Hague is getting a second lease on his UFC career at the expense of Chad Corvin, who was forced to bow out of the upcoming UFC 113 fight card after failing to obtain medical clearance to compete.

"The Thrashing Machine" has taken his place opposite Joey Beltran for the "Machida vs. Shogun II" event on May 8 in Montreal, according to Sportsnet.ca.

In addition to his destruction of Houston Alexander earlier this year, Beltran embarrassed Octagon newcomer Rolles Gracie at last February's UFC 109: "Relentless" event in Las Vegas.

"The Mexicutioner" has won seven of his last eight, with a decision loss to Tony Lopez at KOTC: "Distorted" being the lone defeat during the nearly 15-month span.

He'll look to keep that momentum going against Hague, who re-joins the Zuffa roster after an untimely release a few months back.

The Canadian burst onto the scene at UFC 98 with a quick submission win over Pat Barry, who didn't get much "Hype" following the loss. Hague went for two straight when he met Todd Duffee later that year, but ended up on the wrong end of a record-setting, seven-second knockout.

The straw that broke the contract's back was an ugly majority decision defeat to up-and-comer Chris Tuchsherer at UFC 109 and while it was his second straight, it wasn't exactly a clear-cut loss.

Now Hague has the opportunity to prove he still belongs among the ranks of the world's largest fight promotion.

UFC 113 will be headlined by a rematch between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The card's co-main event is set to feature an exciting welterweight match up between perennial top contender, Josh Koscheck, and the explosive Paul Daley.

Kimbo Slice will also make his pay-per-view (PPV) debut against fellow TUF 10 cast member, Matt Mitrione.

M-1: 'Fedor is frustrated and upset that he hasn't been given the ability to fight'

"There are certain clauses in that agreement which haven't been lived up to. In one of these clauses was co-promotion, and given that M-1 spent a significantly larger amount of money on the first show than did Strikeforce, we would like to see something along the lines of a number of M-1 fighters fighting on the M-1 Strikeforce show, the main show, the undercard, etc. From our point of view, we're waiting for the decision of, primarily, Scott (Coker) and Strikeforce, but also that of Showtime, and basically delivering in the relationship, going forward, that which was promised to us in the first place. This (decision) doesn't depend on us at all. The ball is in their court. Fedor is in good shape. He's constantly training to keep his form up. He needs around a month and a half warning before a potential fight and he'll be able to fight. So the 26th of June is not a problem. Fedor is frustrated. He's upset that he hasn't been given the ability to fight. Again, the (delay) to make the fight happen, hasn't been on us. It's been on the other side. Because of their refusal to agree on giving us what was promised in the (contract) signed, the fight hasn't happened. We're not asking for anything other than what we were promised initially. ... What we want is simply a 50-50 (relationship). We don't want a repeat of the November 7 show, which for all intents and purposes looked like a Strikeforce show. We want to be 50-50 partners. We want this to be a proper fully fledged co-promotion."

M-1 Global President Vadim Finkelchstein explains why top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko has been missing in action since a second round knockout over Brett Rogers last November on CBS. Finky wants Strikeforce to do a better job of co-promoting including (but not limited to) the addition of more M-1 contracted fighters on co-promoted shows and well as an increased brand awareness so that stateside audiences don't think it's merely a Strikeforce show that just happens to have Fedor appearing. Anyone think Scott Coker is having second thoughts about his M-1 relationship? Or is M-1 not getting what they paid for?
