UFC Quick Quote: Brock Lesnar 'honored' to grace the cover of Undisputed 2010

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 07:35 PM PDT

Vg_brocklesnar_1_576_medium

"I was speechless when they told me I was going to be on the cover [of UFC Undisputed 2010]. I wasn't even sure if I was ever going to be able to fight again. I was 240-pounds lying there, and now I'm back to 280-pounds and back in the gym kicking ass. I can't wait to get back into the Octagon. I've put myself in this category as this confrontational person who creates controversy, but for people to grasp what was happening and to be like, 'Holy s---, I might never be able to see this guy fight again!' That saddened them more than anything probably. I'm sure some of them said, 'I hope that son of a b---- dies.' I don't know. I'm sure there are people out there like that, but that's just the way it is. I'm glad THQ decided to have me and the UFC has really backed me through this whole thing, so it's been great."

UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar talks to ESPN.com about landing the cover of UFC Undisputed 2010, THQ's next installment in their mixed martial arts video game franchise. The Pasty-faced Goliath is set to defend his division title against undefeated wrecking machine Shane Carwin at UFC 116 on July 3 in Las Vegas. Will he suffer the SI cover jinx and fall to "The Engineer?" Or have we officially entered "The Lesnar Era?"

Body Blow! The often overlooked (but always effective) body shot

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 07:11 PM PDT

Ufc-103-junior-dos-santos-vs-mirko-cro-cop_medium

Promoted from FanPosts and authored by "Ain't No Sunshine."

Previously, I made a post dedicated solely to the art of boxing and what makes it effective. Of course in mixed martial arts there are several types of striking -- all of which can be effective.

However, with the viscious knees and elbows of Muay Thai, the exciting head kicks and menacing leg kicks of kickboxing and the newly appreciated techniques of Karate, sometimes Boxing can be overlooked.

See the link above more details on that analysis.

Today I would like to explore and break down one important item that I did not get much into previously: The body shot. We have seen many fights being dictated and won by using a varied striking arsenal and we have seen fights nearly ended or finished due to a final body blow.

Let's dive right into this.

The Body Shot.

Maybe one of my least favorite things I want to experience in the entire world. A game changer when utilized correctly. One of the guys that uses this in his arsenal the best (in my opinion) is Nick Diaz. His striking is very unorthodox from the angles of strikes right down to his stance; however, he has crumbled opponents in the past by using powerful and accurately placed body shots.

I used powerful for a reason.

Nick Diaz at times seems to throw loopy, even sloppy strikes, but what Nick lacks in technical form he makes up in accuracy and power. Effective body shots do require power and strength yet the results are still far and away nothing short of devastating. What's important to realize in the upcoming GIF is the beauty of the set up.

To demonstrate this lets take a look at Nick Diaz as he battles Marius Zaromskis.

2i7pi54_jpg_medium

A thing of beauty, the set up of a body shot can't be done any better then here.

First, you may notice that a lot of the punches thrown look more like pawing and mixed in between those are some serious power punches. To begin the clip, Nick throws six different punches to the face of the "Whitemare." All unanswered, all landing on different areas of his upper body. Also notice that they are thrown at different angles.

After several strikes high up on the torso our natural defensive mechanisms start ignoring our mid-sections to protect the face which is being bombed by punches. It also doesn't help Zaromskis' case that he is already leaving himself open with his head down and his hands protecting the face. Nick lands a power shot in form of the uppercut followed by some hooks which immediately leads to Nick landing his first body shot that almost completely crumbles Zaromskis.

That extremely hard shot to the body is followed six more strikes to the face. Now, if you guys haven't experienced a body shot, its tingling and it makes you wish you could crawl into the fetal position. Marius hunches over after the initial body shot now clinging lower to protect the middle and now once again had punches landing on his face. Then after abusing his face Diaz once again returns to land another body shot, followed again by more punches high.

Whats important to look at here is the set up. He changes angles, he throws different types of strikes all high up to the face, he also throws different strikes of various power and velocity and when his opponent is caught strictly attempting to deter his face strikes, Nick lands his body shots. So what does an opponent do when he is hit from every angle and he can't possibly protect himself all at once? He crumbles and that's exactly how the rest of the fight goes.

6glnw1_jpg_medium

We will stay on Diaz.

Remember I said body shots want to make you crawl into the fetal position? Frank Shamrock did just that after Nick landed this ferocious shot to the mid-section. Nick's striking has always been dangerous and here we see just one reason why. Although, I do wish the GIF started earlier we still see a very important sequence.

Frank is already badly hurt and pressed into the cage (two No-No's.) Diaz has his lazy feeler jab in front of Frank's face and when the right hand starts to come forward Frank covers the face first and clenches to cover the body late and consequently eats a nasty and powerful body shot. The punch had the power to KO Frank anywhere on his upper torso and this one just so happened to land on a very tender and vulnerable spot with Nick throwing his weight and momentum into the punch.

Nickvsfrank5news_medium

First we see the set up with the feeler jab which has Frank second guessing what Nick's next move will be and the finish which is Diaz delivering the body blow. Diaz throws a lot of feeler jabs, a lot of hooks with reduced power and it almost seems like he is just pawing at his opponents. He seems to prefer quantity over quality in theory however his quantity strikes often are very quality in the end.

If you go back to watch the fight vs. Takanori Gomi you can see the damage done by these strikes. In order to be successful working the body you have to have a wide array of strikes in the tool box, the key to an efficient body strike is keeping your opponent unaware of the strike about to come. This becomes even more dangerous when you set up a quality body blow game and thus your opponent fearing the body strike leaves his hands down and chin out.

19ukh2_jpg_medium

Now I know this isn't MMA but The Pac-Man demonstrates what I am saying perfectly.

He establishes his body work which draws his opponent to drop his hands and Manny lands a punch flush to the jaw. Just the flurry here shows head-body-head. A successful use of variety within the combo. A great striker exploits all advantages and using the wide array of strikes allows you to keep your opponent on his heels and second guessing your next move.

So with that, the final comment on body shots are that they can be brutal and effective but we rarely see them since in mixed martial arts the kick is utilized in its place. We have seen body kicks end fights (Franklin vs. Hammil) and dictate the fight as well (GSP, Lyoto, Cung Le).

And of course we have the legendary Bas Rutten who made a career out of the body blow. More fighters are using the body strike however as seen at the top. Heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos has made a habit in the past to be very active when working the body. Don't be surprised to see it more and more in MMA as the sport continues to evolve and as striking continues to rise to elite levels.

Gray Maynard: 'I texted Joe Silva and told him I want the title fight'

Quoteworthy:

"I texted Joe Silva and told him I want the [title] fight. I will fight whoever they want me to, but they know I want to fight for the belt. They announced Edgar as the guy like a day after my fight with Diaz, so it’s not like I had a lot of time to say anything. Sure, I talked to Dana [White] after the Diaz fight and he knows I want to fight for the belt -- that’s what everyone wants to do -- but I trust them and hopefully now I will get a shot at my dream. You have to bully him. He is fast and you can’t let him move around like he did against Penn. You have to hit him with some punches, then get your hands on him and push him up against the cage and make him fight your fight."

Undefeated UFC lightweight contender Gray Maynard has been blowing up Joe Silva's phone ever since Frankie Edgar defeated BJ Penn for the 155-pound title on April 10 in Abu Dhabi. "The Bully" is the only man to defeat "The Answer" in 13 professional fights and hopes that history will repeat itself in their rematch -- assuming the UFC matchmaker and boss Dana White are interested in giving Maynard his big break. Anyone think that Edgar gets the better of him the second time around?

Matt Lindland, Tyron Woodley and Kerry Vera added to Strikeforce Challengers 8 on May 21

Sf-3_medium

PORTLAND (April 12, 2010) -Middleweight (185 pounds) Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) superstar and former Olympic wrestling silver medalist Matt "The Law" Lindland (21-7) will return to the cage in the main event of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon on Friday, May 21.

Undefeated, rising star Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley (6-0) will face off with fellow welterweight (170 pounds) Nathan Coy (8-2) while 135 pound female prospects Kerry Vera (2-0) and Julianna "The Venezuelan Vixen" Pena (2-0) will collide with one another on the card.

A special pre-sale ticket purchase opportunity for the first STRIKEFORCE event in the state of Oregon will take place for "STRIKEFORCE Insider" e-newsletter subscribers (http://strikeforce.com/insider.html) from 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, April 14, until 10 p.m. PT on Thursday, April 15. STRIKEFORCE Insiders will receive a special e-newsletter with the pre-sale code.

Tickets for the event go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. PT on Friday, April 16 and can be purchased at the Rose Quarter Box Office, all participating Safeway/ TicketsWest outlets, or by calling 877.789.ROSE (7673), as well as online at ComcastTIX.com and STRIKEFORCE's official website (www.strikeforce.com ).

Lindland, who captured the silver medal in Greco Roman wrestling while representing The United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics, is also a former All-American wrestler for University of Nebraska and the 1993 NCAA Big Eight conference champion. The 39-year-old will look to re-enter the win column after two consecutive defeats, the last of which he suffered by way of first round submission (arm triangle choke) to superstar Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza at STRIKEFORCE: Evolution on December 19, 2009.

During his stellar 13 year MMA career, the 6 foot Lindland, who hails from Oregon City, Oregon, has triumphed over a number of all-time greats including former UFC champions Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton.

Two years ago, Lindland entered the world of politics, winning the Oregon Republican Party's nomination for the House of Representatives before being defeated in the general election.

One of MMA's fastest rising stars, the undefeated, 28-year-old Woodley of St. Louis, Missouri is a two-time All-American NCAA wrestler for University of Missouri. His superior wrestling skills have been the foundation of his success in the cage, leading him to submission victories over each of his opponents, including his last victim, Rudy Bears, whom Woodley tapped out with an arm triangle choke in the first round (2:52) of their main event matchup at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Kansas City, Kansas' Memorial Hall on November 20, 2009.

Woodley's opponent, Coy, is also an expert in submissions and a former wrestling star for Oregon State University. Coy will put a three fight winning streak on the line that began with a first round (3:39) TKO of Jesse "J.T." Money Taylor on July 25, 2009.

In his last start, Coy forced Travis Bush to tap out from strikes just 16 seconds into their meeting at Spirit Mountain Casino in Grande Ronde, Oregon on March 12.

The 28-year-old Vera, the wife of MMA star Brandon Vera and resident of San Diego, California, made a splash debut with STRIKEFORCE on November 20, 2009 when she battered Kim Couture with superior striking skills and brought about a TKO in the first round (3:35) of their matchup with an onslaught of punches.

Vera gained the attention of the fight world by winning the Oxygen television network women's Muay Thai fight reality series Fighter Girls in 2007.

Inspired by Bruce Lee movies and The Karate Kid at the age of six, Vera, a tomboy, took up Tae Kwon Do and, later, boxing and kickboxing before turning to world's fastest growing spot - MMA.

The 20 year old Pena, a product of Sik Jitsu in Spokane, Washington, possesses a fast-paced, aggressive fighting style which, oddly enough, mimics that of her boyfriend, undefeated lightweight scrapper Lyle "Fancy Pants" Beerbohm.

In her last start, Pena engaged in an all out slugfest with Stephanie Webber, before submitting Webber with an armbar in the second round (2:54) of action.

Pena, whose pretty smile is a stark contrast to her darker side, has ambitions that extend beyond the cage. To date, she has been using her earnings from competition to further her education at Spokane Community College.

Rose Garden Arena doors will open for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at 5:15 p.m. The first preliminary card bout will begin at 6 p.m. and the first main card bout will begin at 8 p.m.

The event will be televised live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Shine Fights: Travis Galbraith vs Murilo Rua booked for 'Mayorga vs Thomas' with Falaniko Vitale hurt

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 12:48 PM PDT

Galbraith-rua_medium

New York, NY April, 12, 2010 ( USA ): Shine Fight Promotions (Shine Fights) today announced the official signing of the penultimate bout for its upcoming "WORLDS COLLIDE: MAYORGA VS. THOMAS" pay-per-view event, as former PRIDE/EliteXC fighter Travis "The Gladiator" Galbraith replaces the injured Falaniko "Niko" Vitale to take on PRIDE veteran and former EliteXC Middleweight Champion Murilo "Ninja" Rua at a catchweight of 190 pounds. One more bout will be announced for the PPV-broadcast card

Both long-time veterans of the sport, this fight is as an intriguing bout between two very well-rounded fighters in the game. Rua (18-10-1) was a PRIDE mainstay, fighting in Japan 's premier MMA organization a total of 13 times, and his brother is UFC light heavyweight contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Galbraith (17-7) is one of the biggest names in Canadian MMA, and is a seven-time King of the Cage veteran, winning the King of the Cage Canadian Middleweight Championship in 2009.

"I was looking forward to fighting Niko Vitale, and have been training since New Year's Eve to fight him. It was sad that he got injured, but that's how life goes. As a fighter you have to be prepared to overcome those things and step up to the challenges," said Ninja.

"Everybody knows I fight anyone and I love fighting. Just looking back at my career you'll see the names I have fought, in three different weight classes, and realize I'm not the type of fighter that runs from fights or fears challenges. It's just ridiculous that people would take advantage of the injury of an opponent to talk shit and try to force their way into a big show on PPV like Shine Fights.

My career is nowadays in the hands of my manager, and he tells me who I have to fight and I just go and do it. This is called professionalism, and some people should learn to act like professionals.

"I'm very happy to be fighting Travis. I think he is an experienced, well-rounded fighter who will look at this fight as a great opportunity, and will do his best to turn this fight into a war. I'm excited about this fight, and I have been training hard since early January, doing a lot of jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, and wrestling, so I think our fight can turn into Fight of the Night this coming May 15th," he concluded.

Born and raised in Curitiba , Brazil , Rua is the brother of UFC light heavyweight contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Ninja began his career in his home country, running off four straight stoppage wins. His impressive beginning to his career earned him a call from Japan , and he soon began to make a name for himself as an athlete that finishes fights.

After his time in PRIDE, Ninja moved to England 's Cage Rage promotion, before making his way to the United States . Since then, he has competed in both EliteXC and StrikeForce, while still making appearances in Japan , England , and his native Brazil .

Over the course of his nine year career, he has faced many of the top fighters in MMA, including PRIDE/UFC veteran Akihiro Gono, former PRIDE Middleweight and Welterweight Champion Dan Henderson, former PRIDE contenders Sergei Kharitonov and Ricardo Arona, StrikeForce fighters Benji Radach and Kevin Randleman, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, former WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Fihlo, UFC fighter Denis Kang, Japanese fighter Riki Fukuda, and the aforementioned Lawler.

Ninja has defeated notables such as Mario Sperry, Alex Stiebling, Mark Weir, Xavier Foupa- Pokam, and Joey Villasenor, who he beat for the EliteXC Welterweight Championship belt. 16 of his 18 wins have come either KO/TKO or submission, and he always puts on a show for the fans, win or lose. And Ninja expects to continue to show that in his fight with Galbraith: "I'll try to impose my game and come out with a great win, so I can start off [my career with] Shine Fights in the right way. I'll always try to give great performances, making it for great spectacles for my fans and if God helps, try to win a belt, which will certainly be another great dream for me."

What separates him from his opponent? "My pace, my cardio and my will to enter the cage and look for the win all the time!"

And Ninja has a message for the fans: "I would like to first of all thank all the fans, and tell them that I'll be there [at WORLD's COLLIDE], with a great appetite to seek the win for me and my family. I'll be even more motivated cause I'm going to be a father for the second time, so I need this win badly! If God helps me, this will be a great gift for me and my family. Finally, I want to thank Shine Fights for the effort of promoting our sport and giving me this chance of being part of it!

A native of Prince George , British Columbia , the 28-year-old Galbraith has made his name in MMA as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist, and he is currently a BJJ brown belt under noted trainer Rodrigo Munduruca. But "The Gladiator" has also shown an impressive knockout power in both hands, thus making him one of the more dangerous fighters in the middleweight division.

The Canadian has faced some of the best that the sport has to offer, including current UFC Welterweight Champion and top pound-for-pound fighter Georges St. Pierre , current UFC fighter Jonathan Goulet, UFC veteran Joe Doerksen, PRIDE veteran Kazuhiro Nakamura, Strikeforce fighter Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante, and Cage Rage veteran/MFC fighter Tom "Kong" Watson.

The talented member of Edmonton , Alberta 's Triple Threat MMA has also earned impressive victories over UFC veteran David Heath, top-ranked Canadian light heavyweight Martin Desilets, and King of the Cage veterans Nick Hinchliffe (twice) and Craig Brown.

"The Gladiator" has also made appearances in PRIDE Fighting Championships, the now-defunct Elite XC, and is a five-time veteran of Canada 's Maximum Fighting Championships, going 4-1 in that organization. Having stopped opponents in 15 of his 17 career victories (10 submissions, 5 knockouts), Galbraith is currently ranked as the No. 5 light heavyweight fighter in Canada by TopMMANews.com. Galbraith has won four of six bouts dating to the start of 2008, stopping all but one foe.

This bout joins the previously announced 160-pound catchweight main event between former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga and MMA veteran Din Thomas as well as a welterweight contest between MMA veteran Nick "The Goat" Thompson and Brazilian star Eduardo Pamplona on the May 15th card.

A surefire ground war is set to take place at 175 pounds between 2009 ADCC Absolute Champion Braulio Estima and former Olympic Judo competitor Rick Hawn. A 205-pound grappler's dream will also take place between Brazilian star Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira and IFL veteran and BJJ black belt Jamal "The Suit" Patterson to round out the PPV-broadcast main card.

"WORLDS COLLIDE" is taking place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville , NC , and will be beamed on PPV on cable and satellite in the United States and Canada . The event will be broadcasted in High-Definition, and it will be available in both English and Spanish (where available). The broadcast will start at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT and will be produced by MultiVision Media, Inc.

There will be a 30-minute countdown show prior to the live event at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT. The event will be available for $29.95. Tickets may be obtained by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420, or online at www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Crown Coliseum Box Office. WEC 49 set for June 20 in Edmonton

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 12:15 PM PDT

Wec-plain_medium

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), the sister mixed martial arts promotion to the UFC, will be making its Canadian debut right on the heels of UFC 115 -- which will also go down in Canada (Vanouver) on June 12 -- when WEC 49 takes place from Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on June 20.

The event was previously reported to be set for the same date, though in Calgary

WEC Vice President Peter Dropick talked to The Canadian Press about the event and why the venue was changed.

"It really came down to availability of dates and venues. They're [Edmonton] eager for the WEC to get in there. We've had good feedback from that market. Good ratings, good TV ratings and good pay-per-view buys from the UFC standpoint. It's one of the hotter markets... The April show is stacked but we've got a deep, deep roster. We'll put on a strong card."

A match up between Ed Ratcliff and Canada's own Chris Horodecki is currently the only fight scheduled for the card.

Keep it locked to MMAmania.com for more news on WEC 49 as it breaks.

MMA Quick Quote: Gegard Mousasi wants to be heavyweight champion of the world

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 09:33 AM PDT

Gm1_medium

[King Mo's] good. He's experienced -- not as experienced as a fighter as I am, but experienced with wrestling. He's the opponent I've been asking for, he's a dangerous opponent and it's a good fight ... I'm the champion and he's the challenger, but I think his wrestling experience is big: He's been competing for a long time. I'm not taking him lightly. I'm more experienced in MMA but I'm not thinking that I'm a better fighter than him. I'm very happy with Strikeforce. I enjoy being part of the team. I may sign with the UFC after Strikeforce but there's really no reason for me to go. I've been treated very well, both in Strikeforce and in Dream, and I'm very happy where I am ... Would I fight good fighters in UFC? Yes, that would be a good challenge, but I'm not going to say I want to fight [those guys] because that's not a possibility. They're in a different organization. I'm really not thinking about fighting them. I'm only thinking about fighting King Mo ... I was champion in Dream at middleweight, I'm champion in Strikeforce at light heavyweight, and my final goal is to be heavyweight champion of the world.

Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi (via MMA Fighting) looks forward to bigger opportunities (literally) following his 205-pound title defense against fast-rising prospect Muhammed Lawal at Strikeforce: "Nashville" on April 17. "The Dreamcatcher" started at middleweight and hopes to eventually finish at heavyweight -- but will it be with Strikeforce or the UFC? And can he first get past "King Mo" on his quest?

Top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko is still planning for an upcoming bout opposite Fabricio Werdum at a planned fight card for Strikeforce in June; however, negotiations may not be going so well if "The Last Emperor" has already (hand?) picked a replacement fighter if "something goes wrong." Is this much ado about nothing? Or should "Vai Cavalo" fans have something to be concerned about?

MFC 25: Chase Gormley vs Ryan Fortin booked for May 7 in Edmonton

A rare heavyweight fight has been added to the undercard of MFC 25: Vindication taking place on Friday, May 7 at the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton , Alberta .

Popular brawler Ryan "The Vanilla Gorilla" Fortin (4-2), who fights out of Wetaskiwin , Alberta , takes on Chase Gormley (6-2) of Los Angeles , California , in what should be a clash of heavy hitters looking for a big knockout.

Fortin will be looking to rebound from a tough loss when he dropped a second-round submission via rear-naked choke to Nick Penner on the undercard of MFC 23. Fortin had dominated the stand-up portion of the fight, badly cutting Penner and causing a massive amount of damage.

The biggest win of Fortin's career came at Heat XC 4 back in November 2009 when he earned a quick TKO victory over Jared Kilkenny.

Gormley is back under the tutelage of MFC lightweight champion Antonio McKee and looking to return to the form he showed in his previous MFC outing. Back in May 2008, Gormley stepped up to face Eric "Big E" Pele and used a solid clinch game to pull out a clear-cut unanimous decision.
