Gus Johnson: 'My job isn't to promote the sport -- I’m paid to give my opinion and to describe what I see'

Quoteworthy:

"I take a lot of criticism, but I try my best to try to help promote this fucking sport, when nobody else, including television executives could give two shits because they think it’s barbaric and it’s filled with a bunch of hoodlums, which is exactly how it looked to everyone watching the show Saturday night. The problem with MMA is that these Internet guys ruin the sport because they’re negative 90 percent of the time. I try to say as many good things about these athletes in this sport on a network level — not on an underground level or a Spike TV cable level or a pay-per-view level. My job isn't to promote the sport. I’m paid to give my opinion and to describe what I see and it’s my opinion that the guys they had Jake fight were supposed to beat him. That's how I see it. I said it, so I believe it. That’s disrespect. Do you mean to tell me that Strikeforce didn’t bring a former Pride champion [like] Dan Henderson in to beat Jake Shields? Come on, man. I'm also not blaming Miller for what happened. Mayhem didn’t do anything that Shane Mosely hasn’t done, or other fighters who aren’t a part of the main event of the card who get in the cage or the ring to hype a future fight haven't done hundreds of times before. It always happens. That’s not a big deal. The reaction from Gilbert and Jake and all these guys was what was the big deal. It was improper, and to be honest, it was shameful."

Strikeforce: "Nashville" CBS broadcaster Gus Johnson retaliates after getting slammed by the majority of mixed martial arts pundits, including Mike Russell, who came down hard on the talking head for his comments during (and most memorably after) the main event between Jake Shields and Dan Henderson at "Saturday Night Fights" back on April 17. Is Johnson getting too much flak for his reaction to a televised melee? Or did he speak out of turn with his on-air comments? What side are you on Maniacs?

UFC 113: Tom Lawlor vs Joe Doerksen on tap for May 8 with Tim Credeur hurt

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 08:43 PM PDT

Lawlor-doerksen_medium

Fresh off his split decision win over Chad Herrick at last week's KOTC: "Bad Boys II" event, well-traveled mixed martial arts veteran Joe Doerksen has worked his way back into the Octagon to face Tom Lawlor at UFC 113 from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 8, according to Sherdog.com.

Doerksen replaces Tim Credeur, who was forced to bow out of the middleweight match-up due to an undisclosed injury.

Lawlor is coming off a controversial split decision loss to Aaron Simpson at UFC Fight Night 20 last January in Fairfax, Virginia. Some fans watching the bout on Spike TV, as well as live inside the Patriot Center, had "The Filthy Mauler" winning two of three rounds to secure his third consecutive win in the UFC.

Judges sitting ringside apparently did not agree.

Prior to the setback, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 competitor had knocked off two other former TUF products, including Kyle Kingsbury and C.B. Dollaway in back-to-back contests.

Hoping to make him "Just Bleed" will be Doerksen, who is making his seventh appearance under the UFC banner. "El Dirte" is currently riding a five-fight winning streak and is undoubtedly looking to improve his 1-5 record inside the Octagon.

UFC 113 will be headlined by a rematch between Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The card's co-main event is set to feature an exciting welterweight match up between perennial top contender, Josh Koscheck, and the explosive Paul Daley.

Kimbo Slice will also make his pay-per-view (PPV) debut against fellow TUF 10 cast member, Matt Mitrione.

Spencer Fisher vs Dennis Siver signed for Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 Finale on June 19

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 07:21 PM PDT

Fisher-siver_medium

Gritty UFC lightweight veterans Spencer Fisher (23-5) and Dennis Siver (15-7) have inked a 155-pound showdown for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 Finale on June 19 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

KO Dynasty's Mickey Dubberly confirmed the upcoming match-up with MMAmania.com earlier today.

Fisher is hoping to rebound from a disappointing TKO loss to Joe Stevenson at UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun" last October. "The King" took too many elbows to the crown from "Daddy" and saw his three-fight winning streak come to an end.

In his twelve appearances inside the Octagon, Fisher has notable wins over Thiago Alves, Aaron Riley and Jeremy Stephens.

Like Fisher, Siver was in cruise control over his past couple of fights -- until he found out that Ross Pearson was "The Real Deal" at UFC Fight Night 21 just last month.

His unanimous decision loss to the Brit was his first since stringing together four straight wins (with four straight finishes). He's an outstanding striker with a punishing spinning back kick and has been in the fight game since 2004, compiling an impressive resume in both the UFC and his native Germany.

In addition to showcasing the top two finalists from this season of the Spike TV reality series, TUF 11 Finale will feature a main event between light heavyweights Matt Hamill and Keith Jardine, as both fighters try to re-establish their credibility in a extremely competitive 205-pound division.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on the TUF 11 fight card as the develop.

UFC 110 replay scores 1.4 million viewers and beats Strikeforce in Men 18-34

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 01:43 PM PDT

110-replay_medium

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) went back to Spike TV for a special encore presentation of  UFC 110 to counter-program the Strikeforce and CBS "Saturday Night Fights" event from Nashville when the two ran head-to-head last Saturday night (April 17).

Score one for the boys in Vegas, at least in the key demographic of men 18-34, where the UFC  garnered a 1.4 rating -- enough to outdraw Strikeforce at 1.26.

"Nashville" finished with an average of 2.9 million viewers compared to the 1.4 million average for UFC 110.

Originally airing on pay-per-view (PPV) back in February, "Nogueira vs. Velasquez" marked the Las Vegas-based promotion's debut "Down Under" at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Zuffa was rumored to make its own appearance in "Music City" in an effort to not only hurt television ratings, but to impact the ticket sales of its San Jose rivals. While UFC President Dana White later called the trip "all talk," there was little doubt the Octagon would be appearing on television in one form or another to counter program Strikeforce.

And it wouldn't be the first time.

Spike TV debuted UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" to run head-to-head against "Shamrock vs. Diaz" back on April 11, 2009, and then put UFC 100 up against "Carano vs. Cyborg" later that summer.

What do they have in store for Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" on May 15?

Stay tuned...

Shine Fights: Junior Assuncao vs Luiz Azeredo booked for 'Worlds Collide' on May 15

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 01:25 PM PDT

Assuncao-azerdo_medium

Miami, FL (USA): A bout between two of the most experienced lightweights on the Shine roster was finalized today, as UFC veteran Junior Assuncao (10-4 MMA, 1-0 Shine) will take on former PRIDE mainstay Luiz "The Joker" Azeredo (12-8 MMA, 0-0 Shine) in a stimulating bout at 155 pounds.

The contest will be part of May 15's "WORLDS COLLIDE: MAYORGA VS. THOMAS" card, which takes place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville , North Carolina and will be broadcasted on PPV.

Born in Recife, Brazil, Assuncao grew up in Miami, Florida. He now fights and trains out of Atlanta, Georgia at Ascension MMA with brothers Raphael and Freddy, also fighters. Junior went 1-2 during a three-fight streak in the UFC before being cut, earning a victory over David Lee and losing to tough foes Kurt "Batman" Pellegrino and Nathan Diaz in the process.

The 28-year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Capoeira black belt has since gone on to win five of six fights, including a hard fought split-decision victory over Peter Grimes at Shine II last September. A strong wrestler who loves to stand and bang, Assuncao also earned the XFC Lightweight Championship on March 19 with a first-round submission victory over John Mahlow. The well-rounded fighter brings a four-fight win streak into his collision with "The Joker."

One of only four men to defeat current pound-for-pound king and UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva, Sao Paulo, Brazil native Luiz Azeredo made his mixed martial arts debut in 1997 and has since faced and defeated many of the most legendary lighter weight fighters in the sport's history.

His list of opponents includes Silva, current top contender Hayato "Mach" Sakurai, Luiz "Buscape" Firmino, Takanori "The Fireball Kid" Gomi, Joachim "Hellboy" Hansen, Paul "Semtex" Daley, Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri, and notables Fabricio "Morango" Camoes, Tony DeSouza, Milton "Miltinho" Veira, and Naoyuki Kotani. His win over Daley ranks as one of the crowing achievements of his career.

In short, the 33-year-old Chute Boxe member has faced a who's who of lighter fighters. Assuncao will be another notable added to his list. The veteran has also been in some of the most memorable wars in the sport's history, including his 2005 victory over Shine veteran Firmino that ranks as one of the best battles in PRIDE's storied history.

"I've always been a fan of these two fighters, and this is one of the sleeper fights on May 15 that will help make Shine III the card of the year," Shine Fights matchmaker Ron Foster said.

This pivotal bout in the Shine lightweight division joins the previously announced 160-pound catchweight main event between former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga and MMA veteran Din Thomas as well as a welterweight contest between MMA veteran Nick "The Goat" Thompson and Brazilian star Eduardo Pamplona on the May 15th card.

Two surefire ground wars are set to take place at 175 pounds between 2009 ADCC Absolute Champion Braulio Estima and former Olympic Judo competitor Rick Hawn and at 205 pounds between Brazilian star Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferriera and IFL veteran Jamal "The Suit" Patterson.

"WORLDS COLLIDE" takes place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, NC, and will be beamed on PPV on cable and satellite in the United States and Canada. The event will be broadcasted in High-Definition, and it will be available in both English and Spanish (where available).

The broadcast will start at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT and will be produced by MultiVision Media, Inc. There will be a 30-minute countdown show prior to the live event at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT. The event will be available for $29.95. Tickets may be obtained by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420, or online at www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the Crown Coliseum Box Office. WEC Quick Quote: Jose Aldo won't let Urijah Faber take away his dream on April 24

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 12:20 PM PDT

"I fight for my fans. I love putting on a good show for them, and I feel that they enjoy a good stand-up game. I am very excited to be headlining the first-ever WEC pay per view, and I can guarantee it will be a great fight. Urijah was the champion and has been a top fighter for some time. I knew that I would one day be facing him in the WEC. I don't know where the fight will take us, but I am confident that my game plan will bring me a great victory and allow me to keep my belt. It has been my dream to be the champion and I won't let that dream be taken away from me."

WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo tells Mike Chiappetta that his dream to become (and remain) 145-pound champion will not be taken away by former division title holder Urijah Faber when they meet in the hometown of "The California Kid" this Saturday night (April 24) at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California. "Junior" is 6-0 under the WEC banner and has finished all six of his victims by way of (T)KO -- will Faber be number seven? Predictions please.

Roger Huerta vs Pat Curran announced for Bellator XVII on May 6 in Boston

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 09:47 AM PDT

Huerta-curran_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (April 20, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced today that Roger Huerta will face rising star Pat Curran while "Submission of the Year" title holder Toby Imada will face Carey Vanier at Bellator's May 6th event at the Wang Theatre in Boston.

The two fights comprise the semifinal round of Bellator's ongoing Season 2 lightweight (155 lbs.) tournament. The winners of each fight will face each other in the Season 2 finals in June with the winner of that fight earning the right to face Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez in a title bout.

Rebney made the announcement today at an afternoon press conference at the Wang Theatre, where he was joined by Curran and Alvarez, whose much-anticipated Bellator Super Fight with former UFC contender Josh Neer headlines the May 6th Boston card.

"As a fan, I can't wait for our May 6th show in Boston ," Rebney said. "Alvarez vs. Neer should be explosive, with Eddie making his first appearance in the U.S. since he won our lightweight title last summer. Huerta vs. Curran just got really interesting coming off of Pat's one punch KO of previously undefeated Mike Ricci. Toby's world class submission wrestling vs. Carey's world class wresting should be a great fight as well."

Alvarez's Super Fight against. Neer could not come at a better time for the Bellator champion. Just two weeks ago, Alvarez (19-2) was the consensus No. 3 lightweight in the world behind B.J. Penn and Shinya Aoki. With Penn and Aoki both losing over the last week, Alvarez has an opportunity on national television to establish himself as the world's top-ranked lightweight. First, though, Alvarez has to get past powerful UFC veteran Neer with his 27-9-1 career record and KO power in both hands.

Huerta (21-3-1) is a former UFC lightweight contender who is the only MMA fighter in history to be pictured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He signed a long-term contract with Bellator this winter and won his first fight via third round kneebar submission versus the previously undefeated Chad Hinton on April 8th at Bellator 13.

Curran (10-3) is the cousin of MMA pioneer Jeff Curran. He burst onto the national MMA scene at Bellator 14 last Thursday with a spectacular KO of the previously undefeated Mike Ricci that soon became Bellator's latest "YouTube moment." In just five days, the clip has already been viewed online more than 65,000 times.

Imada (24-13) is a longtime MMA veteran who gained the most notoriety of his career thanks to his stunning inverted triangle choke submission of Jorge Masvidal at Bellator 5 last spring. Though he fell to Eddie Alvarez in the Bellator Season 1 lightweight finals, he made an auspicious return to the Season 2 with a dominant performance over WEC veteran James Krause at Bellator 14.

Vanier (8-2) is a former all-American wrestler at Ridgewater College in Minnesota who made an impressive Bellator debut at Bellator 13 with a TKO of MMA veteran Joe Duarte.

Strikeforce: Brett Rogers going to 'embarrass' and 'knockout' Alistair Overeem at 'Heavy Artillery'

Quoteworthy:

"I've been wanting this fight since [last] May before the Arlovski fight. I've been calling (Overeem) out and he's been back-and-forth with words online but he never showed up. There's always been some excuse. He's one of those cocky, arrogant dudes that thinks he's a god because of his appearance. I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for his "Eastern Diet" his appearance wouldn't look the same. It is what it is, I'm a natural [and] natural-hearted strong person and we're gonna see who wins come May 15. The key to beating him is outworking him -- get him gassed, embarrass him and knock him out."

-- Strikeforce heavyweight wrecking ball Brett Rogers finally hopes to bring balance to the convoluted title picture in the Strikeforce 265 lb. division when he meets current champion Alistair Overeem at "Heavy Artillery" on May 15. "The Grim" is frustrated that "Demolition Man" has been holding the belt hostage while he dabbles in the Japanese kickboxing scene and wants to settle their verbal spat once and for all. Can the former tire mechanic overcome the horsemeat-powered striking of Golden Glory's star pupil? Or is the bigger question whether or not Overeem even makes it to the Showtime event? Anyone laying early odds?
