The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11: Episode 5 recap and discussion

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 07:38 PM PDT

Tuf5_medium

Episode five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 11 gets underway with a recap of Jamie Yager's beatdown of Charles Blanchard. Back at the house, the "Minority Report" contemplates who will fill the open wildcard spot. James Hammertree and Kyacey Uscola seem to be the frontrunners based on injuries to some of the other eligible contestants.

Tito is all smiles as he gains control of the fight picks and immediately selects Chris "Savage" McCray to fight Josh Bryant. No one seems to give Bryant a chance based on his unassuming demeanor but it should be noted that he's 10-0.

Coach Hackleman gives the guys a pep talk before they head into a training session. Bryant talks about his struggles growing up and how fighting kept him out of trouble as a kid. Chuck remarked that he's never seen a fighter be as happy as Bryant while cutting weight.

Over at Team Ortiz, McCray talks tough for the camera and promises to break his opponent. Tito is pleased with McCray's effort in training and continually screams "Believe in yourself" as his team drills.

McKinney went in for surgery to correct his shoulder injuries and feels vindicated after getting flak about possibly milking it to get attention or phoning it in to go easy in practice. Tito mans up and apologizes for dogging him when he in fact had a serious injury.

Clayton responds by flipping him the bird once Ortiz turns his back.

Both McCray and Bryant make weight without incident and once again, Chuck has to skip town for a "previous arrangement." Must be busy filming another sneaker commercial in his birthday suit.

It's the day of the fight and John Hackleman is running the show for Team Liddell. Bryant doesn't seem the least bit concerned heading into his fight despite the general consensus that he's the underdog. Yager tries to drive the point home by giving him the Julius Caesar thumbs down routine.

McCray warns viewers not to get popcorn because he'll end the fight before it's done popping.

Elimination bout #5: Chris McCray (5-0) vs. Josh Bryant (10-0)

Round 1: Quick trade of hands. Bryant charges and tries for a takedown but can't get it. They tie up against the cage and McCray muscles him to the mat. Bryant sneaks out the back door and clocks him when they stand up. Some dirty boxing from both sides. McCray looks for the takedown and gets it but Bryant springs right back up. Fairly ugly technique so far. Up and down again. Now Bryant with a big takedown. Hackleman sounds like a drunk war vet shouting out instructions. Bryant looking for the rear naked choke but McCray defends and they're back to their feet. Lots of hugging. Pace has slowed considerably -- and it wasn't that quick to begin with. Bryant eats a knee to the body and clings to a leg as time expires.

Round 2: Nice jab from Bryant followed by an uppercut and a knee. McCray pushes him to the cage. Left by Bryant. McCray ties him up. Hackleman screaming for punches. They seem to be fighting in slow motion. Bryant pushes him to the floor. Bryant working the Kimura but gets turned over. He stands back up and hands fly. McCray with a takedown. Both fighters ignoring their corners. Grotesque display of mixed martial arts. Can they really be this exhausted? Herb Dean on the verge of falling asleep as McCray "works" in Bryant's guard. Round ends and Hackleman screams "Yeah! You got it!." God I hope he's right.

Round 3: No such luck. McCray bullies him to the cage. Bryant turns him around and drops a level to either attempt a takedown or because he's passing out from exhaustion. McCray subtly takes a knee amidst the action. Back to their feet and Bryant lands an uppercut. McCray with a knee. Bryant is completely bent over now like he's stuck in a jackknife dive. McCray stands and pushes him to the cage. I can't stress just how awful this fight is. Herb Dean separates them for inactivity so they meet in the center and trade sloppy punches. They tie up and McCray falls to the mat so Bryant falls too, luckily landing on top. He tries to mount and McCray gives up his back. Bryant has the rear naked choke but is too gassed to finish it. Round expires with McCray in trouble. Hackleman calls it  a "great fight." Local optometrists hit the white pages and search for Hackleman, J.

Josh Bryant defeats Chris McCray via unanimous decision

After the loss, McCray says it could have been a more technical fight but that he left it all in the cage. Tito thinks Chuck has a rabbit's foot up his ass to keep pulling off all these wins and vows to never give up -- which is an interesting mantra considering he leaves the show before the end of the season.

Stay tuned next week as Kyacey Uscola blames Coach Ortiz for the McCray loss, a serious injury sidelines another fighter and the Coaches Challenge returns with Tito vs. Chuck in dodgeball!

See you next week!

UFC on Versus 2: Jon Jones vs Vladimir Matyushenko possible for Aug. 1

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:27 PM PDT

Jones-matyushenko_medium

Someone in the UFC obviously doesn't like Vladimir Matyushenko.

Our amigos over at TheGarv.com are reporting that the Belarusian banger has verbally agreed to a light heavyweight showdown opposite rising star Jon Jones at the UFC on Versus 2 event scheduled for Aug. 1 at the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"The Janitor" was last seen mopping up Eliot Marshall at UFC on Versus 1 back on March 31 for his second straight win under the UFC banner. While Matyushenko is enjoying a three-fight winning streak, all three contests have gone the distance.

The same can't be said for Jones, who in addition to making a mockery of the Zuffa light heavyweight division, broke a few "Bones" in his last contest, also at UFC on Versus 1 when he stopped promotion veteran Brandon Vera in the night's main event.

The win pushed Jones' record to 10-1, with a controversial disqualification (illegal elbows) as the only blemish on his otherwise perfect record -- one that includes eight finishes.

Should the pending Matyushenko bout be seen as a step backwards for the seemingly unstoppable up-and-comer? Or another stiff test against an experienced veteran en route to bigger and better challenges?

Jones' performance on Aug. 1 may provide the best answer.

UFC on Versus 2 is expected to feature a welterweight showdown between Jake Ellenberger and John Howard. To date, no other bouts have been rumored for the Salt Lake City event.

As always, stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on this still-developing fight card.

WEC 48 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Aldo vs Faber'

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for the combatants who participated in the WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" event which took place last Saturday (April 24) from ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California.

Chief among them are Urijah Faber (thigh/knee injury) -- who is suspended for 180 days after gutting it out in a losing effort to Jose Aldo. Mike Brown is suspended 45 days as a precautionary measure. Both Scott Jorgensen (metacarpal fracture) and Antonio Banuelos (nasal fracture) were suspended 180 days by the commission.

And of course, the war that officially kicked off the night, Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung, saw both fighters medically suspended; 180 days for "Bad Boy" (hand fracture) and 240 days for the "Korean Zombie" (dista ulna shaft fracture/facial laceration).

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" injuries and their medical instructions:

Urijah Faber: Suspended 180 days (thigh/knee injury) unless cleared by physician.

Mike Brown: Suspended 45 days for precautionary reasons.

Scott Jorgensen: Suspended 180 days (metacarpal fracture) unless cleared by physician.

Antonio Banuelos: Suspended 180 days (nasal fracture) unless cleared by physician.

Leonard Garcia: Suspended 180 days (hand fracture) unless cleared by physician.

Chan Sung Jung: Suspended 240 days (dista ulna shaft fracture/facial laceration) unless cleared by physician.

Anthony Pettis: Suspended 180 days (foot fracture) unless cleared by physician.

Brad Picket: Suspended 180 days (clavicle fracture) unless cleared by physician.

Demetrious Johnson: Suspended 180 days (thumb fracture) unless cleared by physician.

Rani Yahya: Suspended 60 days (eye laceration) unless cleared by physician.

Brandon Vishner: Suspended 45 days for precautionary reasons.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Jose Aldo eyes UFC future after taking care of featherweight business

"At the moment I am still not thinking about it. First I have to train and defend the title a few times in my division. It is a plan for the future, but not now, just for a distant future. I intend to fight in the UFC, absolutely. I do not believe in fighting against B.J. or anyone else (right now). Before I get there, I have to do some fights to adapt to the weight, and then I'll just see what happens."

145-pound wrecking ball Jose Aldo makes no bones about moving up to lightweight for a future in the UFC; however, "Junior" recognizes he still has some unfinished business in the WEC featherweight division and will need a few fights to adjust at 155-pounds before taking on the world's best. Still, it's hard not to get excited about the prospect of Aldo mixing it up with the UFC's best -- especially after he laid waste to Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, and pretty much anyone else the WEC had to offer.

The official fighter purses for those who competed at WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" this past Saturday night (April 24) from the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California were released earlier today by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

The WEC's first pay-per-view event was supposedly designed to largely increase fighter paydays, but according to these numbers, there doesn't appear to be too much of a difference in this fight card's payouts and other WEC events that preceded it.

Defending featherweight champion and fast-rising pound-for-pound contender Jose Aldo walked away from his title defense with $40,000, the highest salary of any of the card's participants. His opponent, Urijah Faber, pulled in a cool $28,000.

The promotion's lightweight champion, Ben Henderson, earned $26,000 for his first round submission victory over Donald Cerrone, who took home $14,000.

For example, the WEC hands out extra cash for "Fight of the Night," "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night." This event did see a rise in those numbers to a tune of $65,000 per award. To check out these figures for WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" go here.

The total base fighter payroll for this pay-per-view event was $336,500.

WEC 48: Mike Brown downplays role of personal problems in loss to Manny Gamburyan

"I don't think it was a factor. I was ready. I felt alright, you know, I was prepared and ready to go. Felt good, man. I don't know. I have to watch the tape. I haven't really analyzed it. But I felt good, I got hit and I went down, I was hurt and that has never happened before. So, I don't know, I'll have to regroup, see what went wrong and move on... I don't think I'll be on the next one [WEC 49], but I don't want to wait six months [to fight again] either."

Former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown talks about Dana White's recent claims that he had been battling personal problems, and as a result, wasn't his normal self inside the cage last Saturday night against Manny Gamburyan at WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber." While not exactly denying the reports that suggested he had some personal troubles in the lead up to his fight with "Manvel," he does make it a point to say that whatever he was going through, if anything at all, played no role in his lackluster performance. So, what do we see next for Brown? He obviously would like to get back in there ASAP, anyone care to prognosticate?

Lyoto Machida: 'I never underestimated Shogun'

"After analyzing the fight and thinking about the fight, I still feel the judges made the right choice. I never underestimated Shogun. I knew he was a tough fighter. I never underestimate anybody. A fight is a fight and you never know what is going to happen until you start fighting. Both for myself and for Shogun, being in there with each other for 25 minutes, I’m sure he noticed some things about me and I noticed some things about him. I think that makes it so much greater for the rematch this time around. I believe the main priority of the fighter is to go in there and fight well."

Reigning light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida talks about his controversial unanimous decision win over challenger Mauricio Rua at UFC 104 last October as he prepares to rematch his fellow Brazilian a week from Saturday at UFC 113 from the Bell Centre in Montreal. "Shogun" appeared to be getting the better of the exchanges in their five round title fight and many fans were prepared to crown Rua the new 205-pound champ. Unfortunately for Shogun, cageside judges Nelson Hamilton, Marcos Rosales and Cecil Peoples scored it differently. UFC President Dana White declared an immediate rematch and we may finally have resolution to one of the most controversial decisions in UFC championship history. Who ya' got?

UFC Quick Quote: Paul 'Semtex' Daley not interested in a rematch with 'boring' Jake Shields

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 07:25 AM PDT

Shields-daley_medium

"I am not in a rush to rematch him. I am so much better than I was when I lost that fight. I don’t like talking about it - I didn’t perform and I didn’t do myself justice. He’s a boring fighter. Fair play, he’s had a lot of wins and he’s a top fighter who adds to the division, but I enjoy being called the most exciting new fighter in the UFC and don’t want boring fights. Shields is always in boring fights due to his style and I don’t want to be in boring bouts. I am happy to go 6-0 in the UFC before thinking of a title shot. But I also understand that champ Georges St-Pierre is running out of opponents and so guys are getting title fights a little sooner because GSP has beaten a lot of the top guys, including Koscheck."

There's been a lot of talk about Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields coming to the UFC when his current contract expires -- but don't add Paul Daley to the list of people who are excited over the possibility of him competing inside the Octagon. Perhaps that's because "Semtex" was submitted by the grappling whiz back at Elite XC: "Heat" in October 2008. The British striker tells The Daily Record he's a much improved fighter since they last met but has no interest in avenging that loss simply because he doesn't want to subject himself to a boring fight. Anyone out there in MMA-land who's satisfied with that excuse?

UFC 116: Jon Madsen vs Karlos Vemola targeted for July 3

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 07:01 AM PDT

Madsen-vemola_medium

After a successful bid to get back into the UFC following his early exit on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10, Jon Madsen will return to "Sin City" to face promotion newcomer Karlos Vemola at UFC 116 on July 3 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The gang over at Fighter's Only reported the match-up late last night.

Madsen made a name for himself on the high school and collegiate wrestling scene, but made a bee-line for mixed martial arts immediately following his quest for higher learning.

After joining Matt Hughes H.I.T. Squad, Madsen racked up a perfect 2-0 record in 2008 after his debut at Crossroads Combat Challenge (CCC) 3 in Illinois.

That success (along with his gym affiliation) landed him a spot on TUF 10, but he would eventually fall to finalist Brendan Schaub via knockout in their exhibition match in the quarterfinals.

He rebounded against Justin Wren, grinding out a split decision at last year's TUF 10 Finale and made it two in a row with a unanimous decision win over Mostapha Al-Turk at UFC 112 earlier this month.

Hoping to break his stride is Vemola, who knows a thing or two about winning streaks.

"The Terminator" ran roughshod over the heavyweights in Cage Fighters Championship (CFC) from 2008-09. He was last seen giving Peter Yendall a case of the stupids at Ultimate Challenge MMA: "Resurrection" back in February.

All seven of his wins have come by way of (T)KO or submission.

UFC 116 is set to be headlined by returning heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, as he tries to quell the uprising of undefeated division contender Shane Carwin. Yoshihiro Akiyama and Wanderlei Silva will also square off in a battle of sexy vs. psycho.
