The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11: Episode 4 recap and discussion

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 05:31 PM PDT

Aetbb4_medium_medium

Episode four of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 featuring coaches Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and Tito "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Ortiz gets underway with an extremely protracted recap of last week's fight. I guess it was to expose Jamie Yager as a Team Liddell sympathizer.

He gets called out after the fight for cheering on Tavares in what is sure to be one of this season's many confrontations.

Back at the house we get a closer look at "The Minority Report" which is the new, more PC friendly name for "The Brown Clique" consisting of Yager, Brad Tavares and Kris McCray. I was kind of hoping it was like the movie so a little animatronic spider could come and zap my eyes out.

Yes, I'm jaded.

We go right back to the gym for the next fight announcement and Coach Liddell picks Rich Attonito to fight Kyacey Uscola. It's "Hulk Smash" vs. "The Pitbull" according to the contestants.

Cue the "Lonely Man" piano solo which we all know after 11 seasons means someone is going to start gushing over their kids. This time it's Uscola, who will miss the birth of his child to play TUF guy.

And I hope he wins, simply so he doesn't have to explain to his wife that he sacrificed everything to get bounced out of the competition in Episode 4.

Team Liddell showcases Attonito's skill set, which includes a repertoire of cute little faux-mob names and a history of "tossing people like pizza's." That's a lot to live up to in my opinion.

Chuck has to duck out to handle some outside commitments and will unfortunately miss Attonito's fight. Somewhere across the pond, Dean Amasinger is sympathizing.

Back at the house Uscola accuses Yager of stealing his sweater. The F-bomb starts flying and they begin arguing over who the bigger A-hole is. Basically just another day in the TUF house. Must be some sweater.

Coach Ortiz defends Yager and says he's not a thief but it doesn't do much to silence the rat-tat-tat yammering -- which is ironic because Attonito shows him pictures of his wife and Yager is silent for the first time all season. He manages to get a "That's what's up!" before it gets too uncomfortable.

Elimination bout #3: Rich Attonito (7-3) vs. Kyacey Uscola (18-15)

Round 1: Overhand right lands for Uscola. Attonito answers. 1-2 for Attonito. Then a jab. Attonito drops him with a combo and pounces. Uscola covers and rolls and tries to stay out of harms way but gives up his back. Attonito can't capitalize but manages a full-on piledriver when Uscola tries to stand. He rains down more punches to a surprisingly conscious Uscola but gets Randleman'd and ends up on his back in a Kimura. Uscola can't keep it locked on and tries to tee off but accidentally plunks Attonito with two illegal knees while he was still down. Replay shows a possible phantom knee but it's too late, fight's over.

Rich Attonito defeats Kyacey Uscola via disqualification.

Coach Ortiz blows a gasket and obliterates one of the gym doors in the process. Coach Liddell returns and makes his next fight pick and chooses Charles Blanchard to fight Jamie Yager. Ortiz promises to shoot himself if Yager loses.

I'm not touching that one.

Attonito got the win but he also suffered a broken hand and will no longer be able to compete in the competition. Oddly enough, he didn't seem that broken up about it.

Coach Liddell is gamely trying to coax Blanchard through a strategy for beating Yager while Team Ortiz thinks it's going to be a walk in the park. Tito wants Yager to make an example out of Blanchard.

Both fighters make weight without incident and share an unintentionally funny hug prior to commercial break.

Elimination bout #4: Charles Blanchard (7-2) vs. Jamie Yager (2-1)

Round 1: Huge height advantage for Yager. Lunching jab misses for Yager. Combo misses. Blanchard shoots but can't get the takedown. Yager makes him pay for it with a right. Blanchard crumbles and turtles up. Referee saves him from more damage.

Jamie Yager defeats Charles Blanchard via TKO (strikes)

Could the luck of Team Ortiz finally be changing for the better?

Stay tuned next week as Tito gets control of the fight picks, another contestant goes down with injury and a couple of wildcards have the possibility to get called up. Who will it be?

See you in seven!

UFC 116: Chris Lytle vs Matt Brown possible for July 3

Talk about an all-out war.

MMA Fighting brings word that welterweights Chris Lytle and Matt Brown are in talks to throw down at UFC 116, which is set to take place on July 3 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Lights Out" and the "Immortal" are best known for their reckless abandon inside the Octagon. And that willingness to put it all on the line time after time is a trait that has turned both gentlemen into fan favorites.

This fight will also serve as a rematch between the two brawlers as their first match up back in 2007 in the now defunct United Fight League (UFL) saw Lytle defeat Brown with a guillotine choke.

Considering that revenge is at stake, you can be sure that both men will be bringing their A-games to the contest.

Lylte (38-17-5) was last seen in action at UFC 110: "Nogueira vs. Velasquez," where he shocked the MMA world by taking home "Submission of the Night" honors with a first round victory over Brain Foster via kneebar. It's not that Chris isn't capable on the ground, he actually holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but coincidentally enough, the last time Lytle was involved in a contest that was stopped due to submission was his win over Brown three years ago.

"Lights Out" had won three straight "Fight of the Night" honors before his victory over Foster, two came in winning fashion against Kevin Burns at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale and against Paul Taylor at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben." He dropped a wildly entertaining slugfest to Marcus Davis at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson."

Brown (11-8) last competed at UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" where he fell victim to a rear-naked choke courtesy of Ricardo Almeida. Prior to that bout, Matt had won three consecutive contests inside the Octagon and four out of five with the UFC since competing on The Ultimate Fighter 7.

UFC 116 is set to be headlined by Brock Lesnar's return to the cage as he defends his heavyweight title against Shane Carwin. Also expected on the fight card are match ups between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama, Kurt Pellegrino and George Sotiopoulos, as well as a rematch between Stephan Bonnar and Krzysztof Soszynski.

Keep it locked to MMAmania.com for more news on UFC 116 as it becomes available.

Rob 'Zombie': Leonard Garcia hoping to steal a win from Chang Sung Jung on April 24

Quoteworthy:

"Everybody he's fought, he's come after them. What's crazy is when you watch him fight he's all over the place. He does things aren't technical... a lot like I do. It's gonna be hard to win 'Fight of the Night' because some of the fights that are on there, but I think me and him actually have the skill set to put on a great show. We're gonna try and knock each other out. That's my kind of fight. After a close decision and a draw decision, I'm tired of the bad taste. I want to get it out. This fight is the fight that's gonna do it for me."

Former UFC lightweight and hot-and-cold WEC featherweight Leonard Garcia hopes to resurrect the exciting style that garnered him so much attention from the mixed martial arts community earlier in his career. "Bad Boy" had a bad showing in his previous two encounters, dropping a unanimous decision to Manny Gamburyan and then slugging his way to a draw against George Roop. Can Garcia revive his career against "The Korean Zombie?" Or will Chang Sung Jung bury him on April 24 at WEC 48?

WEC 48: Scott Jorgensen looking to avenge a loss and have fun doing it

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 09:03 AM PDT

20091012120021_img_3708_medium

Competing in the first scheduled bout on the main card of the first ever WEC pay-per-view event, Scott Jorgensen will have the full attention of the mixed martial arts community come Saturday night.

What better time to avenge a loss, right?

Facing off against Antonio Banuelos at WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber," the man they call "Young Guns" is in a prime position to reach his, and ultimately every fighter's goal: The right to fight for a title.

On a three-fight winning streak since dropping a controversial split decision to Banuelos at WEC 41, Jorgensen (9-3) is tasked with the challenge of beating the last man to put a loss on his record. If he's successful in doing so, the big fights will surely be waiting for him.

In anticipation of this weekend's match up with Antonio at WEC 48, Scott joined Larry Pepe in MMAmania.com's exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio to discuss getting revenge, his evolution as a fighter, and what his future in the fight game looks like.

Being that the last loss Jorgensen suffered came four fights ago to Banuelos, when he was offered the rematch, Scott accepted the fight without hesitation.

"I was ecstatic. I want to avenge this loss and prove that I'm the better fighter. It was my fault for leaving it in the judge's hands last time. But when my manager told me about this fight, I jumped all over it. I was ready to go."

Many people were surprised when "Young Guns" dropped the split decision to Antonio back at WEC 41, and even though he knows you can't leave the fight in the judges hands, Jorgensen admits the loss really got to him.

"I thought I won that fight. I knew I lost the first round. I gave it up. But in the second round, I had him in more dangerous positions, landed more effective strikes, and put him in a couple of submission attempts. And the third round I obviously won. I was completely shocked that I lost. It was devastating to have a fight that I thought I won taken from me."

Scott's last three fights have been a different story entirely. He's gone 3-0 with two of those wins coming via first round stoppage. So what has been the difference? Jorgensen points to mental maturity.

"Just being calm and relaxed. My emotions got the better of me in our first fight [against Banuelos]. My pride stepped in, and that's not my fight. My fight is a smart, dominant fight."

And like every fighter will tell you, the key to consistent success in this game is all about keeping up with the times and continuing to improve.

"It's just hard work. Just evolving as a fighter, this sport changes so quickly and I have to keep up. It's about going out and having fun too, just like any other sport. You can't let emotions play into it. I just have a new mindset about going out there and doing what I do, having them react to me instead of the other way around. It's all about maturing as a fighter."

When asked what he sees in Antonio's game now that wasn't there in the first match up, Jorgensen revealed that he actually doesn't really study his opponent, but rather focuses on developing his skills in order to dictate how the fight goes.

"I don't watch a lot of tape. I just want to go out there and dictate the fight. I don't think he's evolved that much. I won't have to adjust for him, he's gonna have to adjust to Scott Jorgensen."

While "Young Guns" was reeling off three straight wins in the WEC, Banuelos only managed to get in one fight, a win against Kenji Osawa at WEC 44. And Scott thinks that fact will absolutely give him an advantage come fight night.

"You have to have actual fight time to develop. There's only so much you can do in the gym to get better. The last three fights have helped me tremendously. I've learned something from each of those fights. Fight night is a completely different animal with the crowds, the lights, and the media; you have to make it part of your routine. I enjoy that stuff now and it helps me in my fight."

So where does Jorgensen go if he successfully avenges his loss to Banuelos at WEC 48? Don't ask Scott. He couldn't care less. Like any true warrior, he's just in this sport to compete.

"It's up to the WEC. I'm gonna go out there and put on a dominant performance. I'll let Sean Shelby and Reed Harris determine where I go from here. If it's a title fight or another fight in June, I don't care. I just want to keep getting better, I just want to fight. I'm gonna go out there and put on a show and win. That's my job. I'll let the WEC handle everything else."

As far as how this fight is going to end up, Jorgensen leaves very little to the imagination about what he feels will be the outcome on Saturday night.

"I'm gonna finish him. I have this gut feeling that it won't go to the judges. I feel ready to go right now. I'm on point. I'm on a mission."

UFC on Versus 2: John Howard vs Jake Ellenberger scheduled for Aug. 1

Ellenberger-howard_medium

Streaking welterweight up-and-comer John Howard (14-4) has been tapped to take on fellow 170-pound prospect Jake Ellenberger (22-5) at the upcoming UFC on Versus 2 event tentatively scheduled for the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Our amigos over at MMA Die Hards reported the pending match-up late last night.

Howard has quietly assembled an impressive seven-fight winning streak including a 4-0 run inside the Octagon. While he's yet to get that much-anticipated contest with nemesis Anthony Johnson, it hasn't stopped him from taking out his frustrations inside the cage.

"Doomsday" looked like a super man against Daniel Roberts at UFC on Versus 1, knocking the promotion newcomer senseless in just over two minutes. That performance came on the heels of his beatdown of Dennis Hallman at last December's Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Finale.

Facing him will be Ellenberger, who got back to his winning ways by stopping Mike Pyle (TKO) back in January at the UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" pay-per-view event.

That win helped take some of the sting off a razor thin split decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Night 19 back in September 2009. While known for his wrestling, Ellenberger also has some very heavy hands, as evidenced by his highlight-reel knockout of Marcelo Alfaya at Bellator 11 last June.

UFC on Versus 2 is expected to be officially announced by the UFC in the coming days. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on this pending fight card as they develop.
