Strikeforce: 'Nashville' conference call highlights and quick recap featuring Dan Henderson and Jake Shields

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 02:35 PM PDT

Nashville_11x171_medium

With eight short days to go before Strikeforce returns to CBS in primetime on April 17, the promotion held one final media conference call today (April 9) featuring middleweight champion Jake Shields, Strikeforce newcomer Dan Henderson, lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, and of course Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker.

Strikeforce: "Nashville" is set to go down from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee at 9 p.m. ET next Saturday. The night's main event will see Jake Shields put his middleweight title on the line as he welcomes former Pride FC champion Dan Henderson to the Strikeforce fold.

The co-main event will feature an intriguing lightweight bout as Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez looks to defend his crown against DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki.

Check out the highlights of the call after the jump.

Jake Shields

- Thoughts on being in the main event on CBS and whether or not he feels pressure to put on an exciting show:

Excited to be in the main event on CBS fighting a guy of Dan Henderson's caliber. Does feel pressure to be exciting and to put on a show. Wants to impress the fans. But thinks this match up will make for an exciting fight anyways. He's definitely looking to end this fight.

- On potentially leaving Strikeforce for UFC:

He's really happy with Strikeforce. The media are the people talking about him headed to the UFC. He's in no hurry to leave.

- How he sees the fight playing out and his current weight situation:

Thinks both guys are tough to take down, but that eventually both will get taken down. He's currently 195 lbs. Says he's added a lot of size and that he doesn't expect weight to be a factor.

- On dropping back down to welterweight eventually:

He just takes it one fight at a time. But at some point plans on dropping back down. Thinks he could make it back down very easily.

- What he thought about his lack of promotion from Strikeforce and CBS:

It was irritating at first. But now he's getting a lot more promotion. He had no problem with Dan Henderson getting more press because he's done a lot for the sport. But he's the champ.

 Dan Henderson

- On being in the main event on CBS in his first fight with Strikeforce:

He's excited to be on CBS and help this sport grow.

- Reason why he chose Strikeforce over other suitors:

CBS was a huge part of his decision to come to Strikeforce. Feels as though they have the biggest platform in the sport, including the UFC.

- His thoughts on Jake Shields as an opponent:

He's [Shields] on a big winning streak. Henderson is sure that Shields plans on taking him down to try to choke him out. Thinks his wrestling will nullify that.

Gilbert Melendez

- Thoughts on fighting Shinya Aoki:

He's very happy to be fighting the biggest star in Japan on American soil and on CBS. Says he's pumped to put on a show for the fans.

- On how he sees the fight playing out with Aoki:

The perfect fight for him would see the match never hit the ground and he'd just knock him out. But he knows he has to be ready for everything especially for what Aoki has on the ground. He thinks his training with the Diaz brothers the last few years will help him out a lot.

- On the clash of styles between himself and Aoki and the impact of fighting in a cage:

He's [Aoki] very intelligent. Thinks they have different styles of jiu-jitsu. Melendez thinks he's more high paced and aggressive, while Aoki is more tricky and plotting. He's not banking on the cage helping him out.

Scott Coker

- On the promotion for the card:

Thinks CBS did a great job in promoting the fights during the NCAA men's basketball tournament and on NCIS: L.A. Thinks the fights speak for themselves. It's a great line up.

- Status of Jake Shields' contract:

They're going to wait and see what happens in the Henderson fight and then approach the contract situation afterwards. But they do own a one-fight option with Shields after the Henderson fight.

- The upcoming schedule for Strikeforce:

There will be two cards in May. "Heavy Artillery" on the 15th and a Challengers card in Portland, Oregon on the 21st featuring Tyron Woodley and Kerry Vera. Two fights in June. One will be a big card, and the other will be a hybrid of the two.

- On the partnership with DREAM:

One of his goals when they partnered with CBS was to have the best DREAM guys come over here and fight the best Strikeforce guys because he thinks they can be the biggest fights in the sport. Aoki is their superstar and to let him come over here to fight was very generous of them. And likewise, he says they would have no problem letting the Strikeforce guys go over there and fight.

And that'll do it, Maniacs. Remember that MMAmania.com will have live play-by-play results for Strikeforce: "Nashville" next Saturday, April 17.

UFC 112 predictions, preview and analysis

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 01:38 PM PDT

112-predicts_medium

This UFC 112 preview is brought to you by Comcast.

UFC 112: "Invincible" is set to go down this Saturday, April 10, 2010 from the Concert Arena in Ferrari World on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, live via pay-per-view.

Remember: MMAmania.com will provide LIVE updates with blow-by-blow, round-by-round commentary of the main card action on fight night, which is slated to air on PPV at 1 p.m. ET.

To get us pumped for the event, MMAmania.com Editor and Senior Writer, Jesse Holland (that’s me), has once again rallied the troops for a breakdown of the televised main card fights. All your favorite contributors are here, bringing you an in-depth look at each contest.

One of the big stories coming into this event is of course the headlining middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Demian Maia. We've pretty much exhausted the whole "Striker vs. Grappler" comparison -- can Maia avoid the same fate he met at the hands of Nate Marquardt?

Also putting his belt up for grabs is unstoppable lightweight champion BJ Penn. Does Frankie Edgar have "The Answer" for "The Prodigy's" seemingly unmatched skill set?

In welterweight action, famed grappler Renzo Gracie makes his UFC debut at the tender age of 43. Will former 170-pound champion Matt Hughes send him back into retirement?

There will certainly be a lot to talk about on Sunday morning.

I’ve also included the current betting lines for each fight so that you can get a feel for what the money has to say about the chances of each combatant.

Now, enough with the formalities … let’s get cracking.

185 lbs.: Anderson "The Spider" Silva (25-4) vs. Demian Maia (12-1)

Spinning Fat Kick predicts: As the headlining bout for the UFC's first Middle Eastern venture, you couldn't ask for a more classic match-up of striker vs. grappler. It's pretty clear what each man needs to do to win this fight and it may well be decided by where the action takes place.

Demian Maia is one of the most highly decorated grapplers to have ever fought within the UFC. Most recently in 2007, the year he joined the organization, he came in first place in the prestigious Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) tournament. There is a very strong argument to suggest that Maia has a sufficient skill set to submit Anderson, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in his own right under the Nogueira brothers.

However the trouble for Maia is getting the fight to the ground in the first place -- and that's where his plan falls down. He is not known for his wrestling and Anderson is a much bigger and stronger fighter. All in all, Maia really has his work cut out if he is going to execute his plan of submitting "The Spider."

Silva is entering this fight with a level of confidence rarely felt by any fighter in mixed martial arts. He is undefeated in his last 11 outings and is currently ranked by most MMA pundits as the number one pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.

While he had first round issues against Travis Lutter and Dan Henderson, nobody has ever really looked close to finishing him in his UFC career.

I would think that due to Maia's lack of skill on the feet and no clear way to dictate where the fight takes place, Silva shouldn't find it too difficult to add a seventeenth (T)KO victory to his already impressive record.

Betting lines (as of April 9):

Silva: -800 ((Bet Now))

Maia: +500 ((Bet Now))

Prediction: Anderson Silva via knockout

155 lbs.: BJ "The Prodigy" Penn (15-5-1) vs. Frankie "The Answer" Edgar (11-1)

MMAmania predicts: The pride of Hilo, Hawaii, BJ Penn, has not lost a fight at 155 pounds since 2002 (Jens Pulver), which is more than eight years.

Former champions Matt Serra and Sean Sherk, as well as top contenders such as Joe Stevenson, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez, have all attempted to dislodge "The Prodigy" from his royal mixed martial arts throne.

And all of them have failed rather remarkably. Serra, in fact, is the only who was able to go the distance; however, it was just a three-round bout.

So will Edgar have "The Answer" on fight night and do what all of the esteemed competition before him could not do by defeating Penn?

No siree Bob.

Edgar has always been on the small side of the lightweight division. He's probably a better fit as a featherweight, but that hasn't stopped him from finding success inside the Octagon against much bigger opponents.

His grit, determination and heart have all helped him prevail just as much as his all-around solid mixed martial arts arsenal.

And he's going to need all of those things to survive for 25 minutes locked inside a cage with Penn. That's because anything Frankie can do, BJ can likely do better.

Boxing? Check. Jiu-jitsu? Check, check.

Wrestling, which is Edgar's strongest attribute, might give him some kind of advantage on paper. But after his losing performance against Gray Maynard, coupled with Penn's legendary takedown defense, it's pretty clear that Penn will likely find a way to cancel it out under the Arabian stars in Abu Dhabi.

I like Edgar to perform well and hang with Penn early on at UFC 112. His stand up improves with each fight and he's demonstrated that he's willing to lose a limb if need be while battling out of a submission (See Griffin, Tyson).

He just doesn't hit hard enough, nor have the size and/or power to bully Penn around the cage. If Sherk was unsuccessful, then I find a hard time believing that Edgar will be able to impose his will on Penn.

There is an "X-factor" in this, which is the outdoor weather conditions. But it's going to take more than Mother Nature, as well as grit, determination and heart, to usurp the king's crown.

Betting lines (as of April 9):

Penn: -750 ((Bet Now))

Edgar: +475 ((Bet Now))

Prediction: Penn via championship round submission (rear naked choke) after a highly entertaining three or four rounds.

170 lbs.: Matt Hughes (43-7) vs. Renzo Gracie (13-6-1)

Nostradumbass predicts: I think it might be time for that throaty announcer to stop referring to Matt Hughes as "The most dominant welterweight of all time" now that Georges St. Pierre has hit his stride.

No matter.

Hughes was still a terror for the better part of two years, submitting "Rush" when the Canadian was still wet behind the ears and pounding out a swollen (and oxygen deprived) BJ Penn during their rematch.

And it couldn't have come at a better time.

The UFC transformed itself from the little engine that could to the Empire within that time frame and like the other champions that accompanied him (Franklin, Liddell, Sherk), they were the best that era had to offer.

The man who restored honor and glory to the much under-appreciated country breakfast may not have evolved with the sport -- but neither has the man he meets on April 10.

Simply put, this is a bout that could have taken place five years ago and I don't think it would have played out any differently.

With both fighters, there is very little tucked away in the war chest. What you see is what you get. Renzo Gracie is a gifted grappler. Hughes is a compact wrestler who can bench press a tractor.

Advantage: Hughes.

Dennis Hallman notwithstanding, Hughes has a terrific ground game of his own. It's not on par with Gracie's -- but it doesn't have to be. He only needs to be "good," the power will handle the rest. This is the kind of match-up that made Hughes famous.

And I don't want to pretend that Gracie is some kind of world beater.

Great personality and very likable, but he's 43-years old and hasn't competed since a DQ win over Frank Shamrock in 2007. And before he choked out Pat Miletich in the IFL he was 1-6 over a five year span.

And that was his prime.

Hughes may not be young for the sport, but he's young for the match. I don't agree that he's taking this lightly either. That Miletich loss probably got under his skin and stayed there and stopping Gracie might be the only way to dig it out.

Revenge is a great motivator.

It's also a dangerous ally, as the only way I see Gracie winning this is via Hughes mental mistake. The captain of the H.I.T. squad needs to come in and follow the blueprint. Keep it standing until you no longer have an advantage.

From there it's wrestling 101 with some classic ground and pound. A trademark slam is not unlikely. I'm leaning towards a lopsided decision in favor of Hughes but an early stoppage would not surprise me.

Betting lines (as of April 9):

Hughes: -400 ((Bet Now))

Gracie: +300 ((Bet Now))

Prediction: Hughes via unanimous decision

170 lbs.: Mark "The Philippine Wrecking Machine" Munoz (7-1) vs. Kendall "Da Spyder" Grove (11-6)

Akimitsu Kuwabara predicts: TUF 3 winner Kendall Grove and WEC transplant Mark  Munoz are back trying to stay relevant in the competitive map of UFC's middleweight division.

Grove earned a submission victory over Jake Rosholt at UFC 106 and looks to maintain his momentum that has ebbed and flowed throughout his UFC career. Munoz, on the other hand, looks for his third consecutive victory since dropping to the middleweight division.

An inevitable occurrence in this fight will be that Grove finds himself dragged to the mat - repeatedly. As evidenced by his recent fights against Jake Rosholt and Ricardo Almeida, Grove has not developed sufficient takedown defense to prevent his opponents from snatching his praying mantis legs and dumping him on the mat.

Munoz, former wrestling standout at Oklahoma State, will undoubtedly try to level him and work his vicious ground and pound that has been the key to many of his victories. If Munoz can swarm Grove, his ferocious flurry will be a nightmare for "Da Spyder," whose chin has failed him against hard hitters such as Patrick Cote and Jorge Rivera.

While clearly the inferior of the two in wrestling department, Grove is the more polished in other aspects of the game. Being more well-rounded than ones opponent does not always guarantee victory in MMA; in this case, however, Munoz's underdeveloped, one-dimensional style leaves numerous holes for Grove to exploit.

Munoz will have no problem scoring takedowns but his limited grappling ability will present difficulties in controlling Grove on the ground. On the feet, Grove can use his reach to frustrate Munoz and inflict damage in the pocket with knees and elbows. He has also proven to be a capable grappler who can work efficiently from his guard.

Munoz's inadequate top control will allow Grove to either scramble back to feet or tie up Munoz with his serpentine legs from the guard whenever he is taken down. Grove will test Munoz's submission defense and it is a matter of time before Munoz succumbs to either triangle choke, arm bar or omoplata.

Betting lines (as of April 9):

Munoz: -200 ((Bet Now))

Grove: +160 ((Bet Now))

Prediction: Grove via submission

155 lbs.: Terry Etim (14-2) vs. Rafael dos Anjos (13-4)

James Kimball predicts: A match-up of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt lightweights in Terry Etim and Rafael dos Anjos is on tap for the televised portion of the UFC 112 card.

And in my opinion, it's the toughest fight to call.

24 year-old British submission ace Etim holds a 14-2 professional career mark and is currently riding a four-fight win streak. During his three years with the promotion he has gone 5-2 inside the Octagon with four of those wins coming via tap out.

Not bad.

A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dos Anjos has gone 13-4 in his career coming into this bout with a meager 2-2 win-loss record in the UFC.

While Etim's record is just a tad more impressive than dos Anjos' in terms of numbers, it's the competition he has faced to date that gives him the edge here. Sure he lost back-to-back bouts to Gleison Tibau and Rich Clementi, but that was two long years ago.

Both guys are obviously well versed in the ground game so a grappling match could theoretically go either way. Terry however, holds a significant advantage when it comes to length and reach. And while I wouldn't exactly call it a strength of Etim's, I do think his Muay Thai could play an integral role in this one.

Neither fighter is easy to finish as Etim has never been stopped while dos Anjos' only defeat that wasn't via decision came by way of a vicious uppercut knockout at the hands of Jeremy Stephens that would put a halt to most every fighter's night in the UFC's lightweight division.

Basically, I see this being a battle which guy can outlast the other. And though Terry does possess more ways to pull out a victory than Rafael, I do not foresee this fight ending before the third round comes to a conclusion.

Sure, it may be not be the "edgy" pick you Maniacs are looking for, but I calls it how I sees it.

Betting lines (as of April 9):

Etim: -150 ((Bet Now))

Dos Anjos: +120 ((Bet Now))

Prediction: Etim via unanimous decision

UFC 111: 'St. Pierre vs Hardy' garners 770,000 PPV buys

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 01:18 PM PDT

Ufc_111_medium
The numbers are in for the UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" pay-per-view buy rate, which took place on March 27 from Newark, New Jersey. And it looks as though the Garden State played host to some pretty big business.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer (subscription required) reports the following:

Updated UFC 111 numbers look to be coming in at around 770,000 buys. With Georges St. Pierre as the headliner, the numbers were strongest in Canada, as the top per capita markets were Halifax, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa. Montreal, Hamilton, Saskatoon, St. John's, Windsor, Kingston, Burlington (Ont), Regina and Victoria, all Canadian markets. The top U.S. markets were Honolulu, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Seattle, Newark and Denver.

The initial estimates of the pay-per-view numbers were slightly higher at 850,000 buys, but 770,000 is nothing to sneeze at. The card brings some desperately needed quality PPV numbers to Zuffa, as the promotion had recently been plagued by a rash of injuries and less than thrilling match ups.

UFC 111 signaled the start of what should be a very fruitful run for the company all the way through the end of the summer with stacked cards lined up one after the other.

It's also interesting to look at the markets in which the event did the most business. Canada of course dominated the top market space as Georges St. Pierre was in action, but Seattle and Denver aren't necessarily considered hotbeds of mixed martial arts.

UFC releases Caol Uno and Lucio Linhares following recent losses

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 11:59 AM PDT

Uno-linhares_medium

It’s win or go home lately inside the Octagon … literally.

The UFC — in a move to trim its roster and offer the better fighters more opportunities to compete — has once again handed out a couple of pink slips, this time to lightweight Caol Uno and middleweight Lucio Linhares.

Both fighters have been removed from the official roster.

These combatants join Eliot Marshall, Jake Rosholt and Houston Alexander on the growing list of recent Zuffa contract casualties.

Uno (25-13-5) made his return to the Octagon at UFC 99: "The Comeback" in June 2009 after more than five years fighting for K-1 overseas. Unfortunately he was never able to get anything going, posting a lackluster 0-2-1 record including his most recent loss to Gleison Tibau at last month's UFC 111 event.

The UFC had apparently seen enough, according to MMA Fighting.

Like Uno, Linhares (13-6) went winless in his short stint under the UFC banner -- though he may have been thrown into the deep end of the pool before learning how to swim. Rousimar Palhares and Yushin Okami back-to-back? A pretty tall order for any fighter.

From the "Spartan," courtesy of Tatame.com:

"I think this was ‘the’ fight. I gave my best, didn’t give up and if I have to leave, I’ll do it with my head up. It’s really complicated my situation on UFC. Two defeats in two fight, regardless the fact I was against two top contenders. I’m not sure I’ll fight for the UFC anymore… I hope I will."

The only positive to being released is that opportunities to fight still exist outside of Zuffa. Don't be surprised to see either one of these talents reappear in competing promotions sooner rather than later.

If nothing else this latest news puts more pressure on fighters to not only win, but perform well if given the chance to fight for the UFC. It also ensures that, hopefully, we see more of the top fighters competing against better competition more often.

WEC 48: Anthony Morrison vs Chad Mendes booked for April 24 with Mackens Semerzier hurt

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 08:31 AM PDT

Morrison-mendes_medium

WEC featherweight prospect Mackens Semerzier has been forced out of his April 24 slugfest against Anthony Morrison at the upcoming "Aldo vs. Faber" pay-per-view from the Arco Arena in Sacramento, CA, due to a shoulder injury suffered in training.

MMAWeekly reports that California native Chad Mendes will step in to replace him.

Morrison (15-8) came up snake eyes at January's WEC 46 event when he was faced with the unenviable task of trying to stymie the onslaught of Mike Thomas Brown in the former featherweight champion's first match since coughing up the 145-pound crown to Jose Aldo last November.

A pretty tall order for anyone in the stacked featherweight division, let alone a promotion newcomer. Fortunately the WEC is giving "Cheesesteak" a second chance to prove he belongs against fellow prospect Chad Mendes.

The Team Alpha Male product has remained perfect through six fights. He made his WEC debut a successful one at the "Bowles vs. Cruz" event just last month with a dominant decision victory over Erik Koch.

Mendes cut his teeth in the Tachi Palace promotion and is considered one of the sport's top prospects -- though he'll need to get past Morrison if he plans on retaining that billing.

WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" features a featherweight championship bout between the local fan favorite "The California Kid" Urijah Faber and unstoppable 145-pound champion Jose Aldo.

Also announced for the main card is a lightweight championship brouhaha between champion Ben "Smooth" Henderson and challenger Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone. Former featherweight champion Mike Brown will also take part in the event when he enters the cage opposite Manny Gamburyan.

Court orders Ken Shamrock to pay Zuffa legal fees after failed lawsuit

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 07:37 AM PDT

Shammy_medium

UFC Hall-of-Famer Ken Shamrock came up short in a bid to sue his former employer for not allowing him to complete the second and final fight of his UFC contract.

And now the courts are making him reimburse Zuffa for $175,000 spent in legal fees.

In a lawsuit filed back in 2008, "The World's Most Dangerous Man" claimed he made a two-fight deal with the UFC that would allow him a second fight after finishing his trilogy with Tito Ortiz at UFC: The Final Chapter back in October of 2006.

Shamrock had the option of not fighting for a second time if he chose to retire after his final bout with Ortiz (which he did). Then in June of 2007, Shamrock had a change of heart and tried to return to the Octagon for his second fight but the UFC had already moved on, accepting Shamrock's October retirement as the end of their relationship.

The courts agreed.

Perhaps the UFC chose to accept his retirement at face value. Or perhaps Ken Shamrock is no longer a marketable fighter whose diminished skills puts him one fight away from serious injury.

Either way, the courts weren't about to force Zuffa to hand over the boatload of cash the Lion's Den founder was looking for. And now it's a double-whammy for Shammy as his bid to get paid ended up costing him some serious coin.

From the UFC:

"This latest legal victory on behalf of Zuffa demonstrates, once again, that the UFC is fully committed to vigorously enforcing all of its contractual rights. Judge (Susan) Johnson has determined Mr. Shamrock’s hard lesson learned in this case will cost him approximately $175,000."

Ken Shamrock will never (we think) fight again under the UFC banner -- but that won't stop him from competing. He's still working on a Seth Petruzelli fight at some point in 2010.

Is this a fight he can actually win? Time will tell.

Chuck 'The Waxman' Liddell heads to Madame Tussauds after UFC Fan Expo debut

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 07:04 AM PDT

Chuck_20liddell_medium

Anyone who thought Chuck Liddell was a bit a stiff in real life hasn't seen anything yet.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion -- who many consider to be one of the fighters instrumental in the promotion's rise to power -- will soon become a permanent fixture on the Las Vegas strip (again) when he joins the long list of celebrities immortalized in wax.

"The Iceman" will be unveiled at the UFC Fan Expo on Friday, May 28, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. PT at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center before heading to his final resting place at the Madame Tussauds wax museum, which is located in front of the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino.

Hopefully, the air conditioners are working inside the Fan Expo that day.

Like most wax figures, Liddell came with a price tag of about $300,000 and took a team of nearly 20 artists four months to complete.
