UFC 113: David Loiseau returns against John Salter with Nick Catone scratched

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 09:04 PM PDT

david loiseau

Former number one middleweight contender David Loiseau will get yet another shot at redemption inside the Octagon when he takes on John Salter at UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun 2" from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 8, according to SportsNet.ca.

"The Crow" appears to be benefiting from the misfortune of Nick Catone -- Salter's original opponent -- who has been forced off the card for undisclosed reasons.

Since getting battered and beaten for five rounds by then-champion Rich Franklin at UFC 58: "USA vs. Canada" back in 2006, Loiseau has struggled against adequate competition to regain his top form. In fact, he's lost every UFC bout since (two) and four of his last nine bouts.

After stringing together three straight wins, Loiseau was invited back to the promotion to take on Ed Herman at UFC 97: "Redemption" last year; however, he was thoroughly defeated in a lopsided unanimous decision. The Canadian with Haitian roots most recently stopped Chester Post via first round technical knockout at MFL 2: "Battleground" earlier this year.

Rest assured, he'll need to turn in a convincing performance if he wants to stick around ... third time is the charm, perhaps?

Salter, meanwhile, dropped his Octagon debut to Gerald Harris at UFC Fight Night 20 via a hard-fought third round technical knockout. The up-and-comer was off to a perfect start (4-0) to his professional mixed martial arts career before the setback.

He, too, will be out to prove he belongs on fight night.

UFC 113 will be headlined by a rematch between Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The card's co-main event is set to feature an exciting welterweight match up between perennial top contender, Josh Koscheck, and the explosive Paul Daley.

Kimbo Slice will also make his pay-per-view (PPV) debut against fellow TUF 10 cast member, Matt Mitrione.

Shinya Aoki to train with Cesar Gracie camp

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 01:06 PM PDT

010_gilbert_melendez_and_shinya_aoki-thumb-572xauto-99428_medium

Well would you look at that, the Cesar Gracie clan has a soft side after all.

GracieFighter.com reports that after prized pupil Gilbert Melendez wiped the cage with Shinya Aoki last weekend at Strikeforce: Nashville, Aokl actually put in a request to formally train with the Cesar Gracie camp.

And in what can only be described as a kind gesture, Gracie has obliged Aoki and welcomed him into the Gracie fold.

Cesar Gracie has also gone as far as to invite other Japanese fighters to come train with his formidable stable of mixed martial artists.

One could easily view this move by Aoki as somewhat of an admittance of ineptitude relative to his counterparts who regularly compete stateside. But he should also be given credit for presumably accepting the fact that he's not quite on the same level as some of the other top lightweights in the world and has no problems working at improving his game.

Dana White: We have a three-year plan for the WEC that I believe in

Quoteworthy:

"The hardest part of all this is just figuring it out and believe it or not, I have a plan for this whole thing. What I'm doing today is based on my idea that all television is going to the Internet. That's what I believe and I've believed it for a long time. One thing I can say is, whether you agree or disagree with the decisions I've made, every year we've taken this thing to another level. What we're going to do over the next three years is pretty (expletive) cool."

UFC president, and at least for the time being WEC promoter, Dana White shares his thoughts on the whole UFC/WEC merger discussion. While everyone in the MMA community has noticed and questioned the lack of WEC branding for this event, effectively titled "Aldo vs. Faber," White has stood behind his reasoning for the numerous perceived strategic moves in the lead up to the first of its kind pay-per-view event. Anybody out there care to channel their inner Miss Cleo and predict what Dana has in store for the always entertaining WEC promotion? Let's hear it, Maniacs.

DREAM.14 card taking shape, three more fights added for May 29 event

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 10:12 AM PDT

Dream14_medium

In addition to the previously announced Nick Diaz vs. Hayato Sakurai match up that will now take place at DREAM.14, three more fights have been added to the May 29 event.

Head Kick Legend brings word that six featherweights have now joined the fray.

Joachim Hansen (19-9), who is coming off of a narrow split decision loss to Bibiano Fernades in the promotion's featherweight championship contest at DREAM.13, will be looking to get back in the win column as he battles Hiroyuki Takaya.

Takaya (12-8) has suffered back-to-back defeats since making a run to the finals in DREAM's 2009 Featherweight Grand Prix, where he also dropped a split decision to Fernandes.

Next up is a contest between Hideo Tokoro (26-21-1) and Akiyo Nishiura (10-5-1). Both gentlemen were participants in the 2009 DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix, though neither made it out of the first round. Tokoro has since rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Jong Man Kim at Dynamite!! 2009. Nishiura will be looking to bounce back after dropping a decision to Gustavo Falciroli at a Shooto event his last time out.

Lastly, a bout featuring Miyata Kazuyki (8-7) and DEEP featherweight champion Takafumi Otsuka (10-4-1) has officially been announced by the promotion. Miyata has won three consecutive fights while competing in DREAM and DEEP after succumbing to rear naked chokes in back-to-back defeats, one coming courtesy of the aforementioned Hansen.

Otsuka is another recent victim of Bibiano Fernandes as he lost to the eventual champion in the first round of the 2009 DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix. He has however, rebounded nicely with recent wins over Dokonjonosuke Mishima and Takeshi Yamazaki.

DREAM.14 will also feature the start of the 2010 Light Heavyweight Grand Prix. Notable participants expected to compete in the tournament include Renato "Babalu" Sobral, King Mo Lawal, Gegard Mousasi, Sokoudjou, and Marius Zaromskis.

WEC 48: 'Aldo vs Faber' predictions, preview and analysis

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 08:55 AM PDT

Wec48-preview_medium

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) will be dipping its feet into the pay-per-view waters for the first time this Saturday night (April 24) with WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber." The blockbuster event, featuring two world title fights, is set for the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.

In the headliner, hometown favorite and former WEC featherweight champion, Urijah "The California Kid" Faber, will look to recapture his lost title from one of the most feared strikers in the game today, current 145 pound kingpin, Jose "Junior" Aldo.

Also on tap is a lightweight title fight rematch between friends and rivals Ben "Smooth" Henderson and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone.

Mike Brown, Manny Gamburyan, Anthony Njokuani, Shane Roller, Scott Jorgensen and Antonio Banuelos will also be in action for the promotion's landmark event.

To help get you better prepared for the festivities, we've laid out some quick analysis and predictions for the main card below.

Check it out:

WEC featherweight champion Jose "Junior" Aldo vs. Urijah "The California Kid" Faber

How do you game-plan for a guy like Jose Aldo?

"Junior" is one of the most feared strikers in the WEC. He can hit you with knockout power from any angle, at any time, with any of his eight limbs. On top of that, he also has a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt tied around his waist, meaning, at least in theory, that there is no relief for opponents that choose to take their chances with him on the ground either.

And that's if they can even take him down, which is a feat that even the ridiculously powerful ex-champ Mike Brown couldn't pull off.

The truth is, right now Jose Aldo looks to be as close to unbeatable as a fighter can be in this sport, which is why he's a -300 favorite to keep his title on Saturday night. So, what does Urijah Faber have to do to pull off the upset?

First off, he needs to humble himself. If Urijah walks into that cage this weekend thinking that he has to prove that he can match up with Aldo on his feet, then he's in for a long night. "Junior" is a lot more versatile of a striker than Faber is. As I said before, he uses all eight limbs and has knockout power that can come from any angle at any time. Faber is insanely quick and athletic in his own right, but Aldo's kicks and length make the striking department an area that "The California Kid" should try to avoid at all cost.

History has shown us that Faber is at his best when he's scrambling his way into makeshift submissions on the ground. His unorthodox wrestling and submission attack are what made him, at one time, the top 145 pound fighter in the world. And even though we know Aldo has the black belt, we haven't seen him have to use those skills yet in the WEC. What we have seen from him, however, is that he is an Anderson Silva-like striker.

So, behind one door for Faber is a proven world-class stand-up fighter, and behind the other is, well, a mystery in the form of a black belt jiu-jitsu player. It's a pick your poison type of situation, but still an easy decision from what we've seen to this point from Aldo.

Now, with all that said, Aldo's takedown defense against Brown was outstanding, and in my estimation, there's no reason to believe that Urijah Faber will be any more successful in that area. Perhaps using speed and quickness as opposed to power can be the difference, but that also seems unlikely, given Aldo's own speed and quickness.

The truth is, I don't see Faber having much more of a chance to win than what the odds makers have given him. I think Aldo wins this fight with strikes in one of the first two rounds. Like I said, Faber's best chance to win is to try and get the fight horizontal, and everybody knows it, especially Aldo. I can see Faber quickly becoming uncomfortable on his feet once he feels the wrath of a few of Aldo's leg kicks and punches.

Things won't get any easier for him after a few of his takedown attempts get stuffed either. When it's all said and done, this fight will end in a very similar fashion to the WEC 44 main event.

Final Prediction: Jose Aldo via technical knockout in round two.

WEC lightweight champion Ben "Smooth" Henderson vs. Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone

"Smooth" won the first fight between these two with a steady dose of takedowns, ground control and good old fashioned hard work, not to mention some slick submission escapes. "Cowboy," who is usually very good fighting off of his back, surprisingly had no answer with Henderson on top of him.

For that reason, I don't see Henderson switching up his game-plan in the rematch. He seems to have a pretty good idea about what's going on inside that cage when it comes to wrestling, which is, after all, why he is the champ.

For "Cowboy," however, he'll need to tweak his strategy a bit if he wants to avoid the same fate. He was never really in danger of being finished by Henderson when he was taken down, but he'll still need to show some better takedown defense in case this fight makes it to the scorecards again.

Late in their last fight, "Cowboy" started to turn the tides a bit. Whether that was a case of Henderson gassing or "Cowboy" figuring things out is something that will likely be answered on Saturday night.

Either way, if "Cowboy" wants to win the rematch, he'll need to avoid the slow start and avoid being put on his back as much as possible. He showed that he's capable of the latter in the championship rounds of the first fight, but the former has always seemed to be an issue for him during his time with the WEC.

I think that "Cowboy" is the better fighter. He brings more to the table. But even with that being so, this is a match-up that will always be a bad one for him unless he can clean up his takedown defense and sluggish starts.

With that said, this is where Greg Jackson comes in to play. Jackson is a great strategist and MMA mind. Now that he has five rounds of tape to dissect, I think "Cowboy" will come into this fight a million times more prepared for Ben Henderson, as opposed to just being prepared to fight.

I've got "Cowboy" by decision.

Final Prediction: Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone via unanimous decision.

Mike Brown vs. Manny "The Pitbull" Gamburyan

This is a very interesting match-up between two of the strongest 145 pound fighters in the world. Both guys are at their best when they're overpowering their opponents with takedowns and submissions. But facing off against each other is likely force both men to alter their strategy a bit on Saturday night.

Instead of a three round wrestling match, I expect to see a lot of stand up in this fight. For whatever reason, match-ups like this often seem to take on that style, and I have a feeling these two are going to follow that trend.

With that being said, I think this is Mike Brown's fight to win or lose. He's the better all-around striker. They both have great power and adequate speed, but Brown can mix it up more with kicks, knees and punches in or out of the clinch.

When push does come to shove and one of them does have to shoot for a takedown, I've got my money on Mike Brown there too. I can't see Manny just overpowering him into submission, and the fact that Brown trains with one of the best camps in the world at American Top Team makes me doubt Manny's ability to beat him with technique as well.

Manny is tough, so I think he goes the distance, but like I said, this is Mike Brown's fight to win or lose.

Final Prediction: Mike Brown via unanimous decision.

Anthony Njokuani vs. Shane Roller

This is a classic striker vs. grappler match-up.

Njokuani prefers to keep his fights standing so he can use his length and Muay Thai skills to stop his opponents with strikes. It's a style that has lead him to three straight impressive knockout wins under the WEC banner over Bart Palaszewski, Muhsin Corbbrey and Chris Horodecki.

Roller, on the other hand, is a wrestler, and a good one at that. If he doesn't feel like it's in his best interest to stand and trade (which this fight is absolutely not) then he'll try to take you down and either submit you or pound you out with strikes. It's a style that has won him four of five fights in the WEC, including a recent submission finish over the red hot Danny Castillo.

With that said, I hate this fight for Njokuani. It's just a bad match-up for him. Roller is completely different than the three guys I named above that he's recently beat. In fact, Roller's style is most similar to the one guy in the WEC that has beat Njokuani, Ben Henderson.

Njokuani's thin frame at six feet tall makes him vulnerable to Roller's takedowns, and I don't think the Team Takedown product is going to have much trouble executing his gameplan on Saturday night.

Final Prediction: Shane Roller via submission in round two.

Antonio Banuelos vs. Scott Jorgensen

This is a rematch from a WEC 41 undercard fight that ended in a split decision victory for Banuelos. As is the case with most split decisions, there were a lot of people who felt that the outcome should have been different.

Thankfully, the WEC is giving these guys a chance to make their case one more time. More so for Jorgensen, who has a big opportunity to erase the one loss that he's had in the WEC over the past two years. If not for that split decision loss, Jorgensen may already be in line for a crack at Dominick Cruz's bantamweight title.

As it stands though, he'll have to at least get through Banuelos first. And even though Banuelos took home the win the first time around, I think Jorgensen is completely capable of handily winning the rematch.

Not only do I think Jorgensen was robbed on the scorecards the first time around, but the 28 year old has shown a lot of improvement since that fight last June with three straight wins, including a unanimous decision over former top contender Takeya Mizugaki.

Banuelos' boxing and toughness will keep this fight relatively close, but I think the decision should be a lot easier for the judges this time around.

Final Prediction: Scott Jorgensen via unanimous decision.

That's a wrap.

'Smooth' Operator: MMAmania.com WEC 48 interview exclusive with Ben Henderson

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 08:54 AM PDT

Smooth_medium

At WEC 43 in October 2009, Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone had a knock down, drag out five round war with the interim lightweight championship on the line.

When the dust settled many were calling in the best fight in all of MMA that year. Henderson walked away with the unanimous decision victory.

As the WEC shifts gears to its first pay-per-view card, it is only fitting to have the encore on center stage. This time, however, Henderson's lightweight belt he earned in a recent unification bout with Jamie Varner will be on the line.

It will all go down Saturday, April 24 at the WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" event in Sacramento, California.

"Smooth" took some time out to discuss his thoughts on the recent Penn/Edgar title fight, possibly joining the UFC someday and how he would grade his ever improving stand-up game.

Check it out:

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What did you think of the BJ Penn / Frankie Edgar fight at UFC 112? Did you agree with the decision and why (or why not)?

Ben Henderson: I didn't agree with the decision/ I believe to beat the champ you have to take it from him. No disrespect to Frankie, but I didn't feel he did that. I believe BJ won the first three rounds.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Fans and pundits often speculate about how the top WEC lightweights like yourself would fare in the UFC. How do you think you would stack up in the UFC lightweight division & would you like to test yourself against their best someday?

Ben Henderson: Yes, I am very interested in seeing how I would stack up in the UFC lightweight division. My goal is to test myself against the best lightweights on the planet.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Let's go back to your recent win over Jamie Varner at WEC 46 that won you the lightweight championship. What was the general game plan you had going into the fight and did you execute like you had hoped? Were you happy with your overall performance?

Ben Henderson: The general game plan was to get the 'W' and that's exactly what we did. Was I satisfied? A little bit, but you can always do better.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Varner said this during his post fight interview:

"I wanted to box, he [Henderson] wanted to kick. S*** happens. I was winning the fight, all he was doing was throwing body kicks. I got the takedowns, had the control. He didn't want to box--go ahead and boo. I came to fight, Ben came to grapple. Two different things."

Did you feel disrespected at all by his comments? Was he being a sore loser?

Ben Henderson: No, I didn't feel disrespected at all by his comments. He's a grown man and fully entitled to his opinions.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Some champions put their belt on display at their gym, at home in a display case, or thrown in a closet somewhere. Where do you keep yours and why?

Ben Henderson: The WEC belt is hanging up on display at my gym MMA Lab, just cause really.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You're putting your title on the line against Donald Cerrone at WEC 48. It has been roughly six months since you both last fought. Do you feel like you have a grasp on everything that is in Cerrone's arsenal being that you have already fought 25 minutes with him?

Ben Henderson: I feel like I know Cerrone pretty well. Did he work on some new stuff? Most likely, and I'm sure it'll be on display on the 24th in Sacramento.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com):  Do you feel like you have improved as a fighter even in that short time span since you last fought Cerrone? If so, what specifically do you feel you have refined?

Ben Henderson: Yes, I feel I've improved. I would like to think in every facet of MMA.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Let's say I'm creating a WEC video game. On a scale of 1 - 10 what should I rate your overall stand-up game as at this point in your career?

Ben Henderson: Six.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You have this innate ability to escape deep submissions like you showed in your previous fight with Cerrone and also against Varner at one point. Some fighters panic when danger rears its head, but you always seem to weather the storm. What are the keys to getting out of a formidable submission attempt and why do you have so much success doing so?

Ben Henderson: Knowing the right technique to get out. I practice those techniques a lot.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What is your official prediction for your upcoming fight?

Ben Henderson: My hand raised at the end.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): WEC 48 is the first card that fans will have to purchase. Do you like the idea of the WEC being on PPV? If so, why?

Ben Henderson: Sure, it brings some prestige and legitimacy to our lighter weight classes.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Any message you would like to pass along to your fans out there or any sponsors you would like to thank before we go?

Ben Henderson: First and foremost thank the Lord who sits most high. My mother, brother, and fiancée. All my friends and family at my gym, the MMA Lab, all my coaches and training partners, my manager, and MTX audio for taking the chance.

Report: Matt Hughes vs Ricardo Almeida possible for UFC 117

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 08:16 AM PDT

Hughes-almeida_medium

I guess Edward Gibbon was right: Revenge is profitable.

Ricardo Almeida may get the chance to take his frustrations out on Matt Hughes in a possible welterweight showdown at the upcoming UFC 117 event planned for Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., according to a McTweet from ESPN's Franklin McNeil.

"Cachorrão" should be in high spirits considering he's the winner of three straight. The grappling wizard recently made Matt Brown look mortal in their 170-pound clash at UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" last March.

His celebration was short lived however, as his Master and longtime friend Renzo Gracie was stopped by the flinty farmboy at UFC 112: "Invincible" earlier this month.

Almeida has looked good since dropping to 170-pounds, but will be be good enough to overcome the former welterweight champion?

Hughes battered Gracie en route to a third round TKO stoppage in Abu Dhabi. It was his second straight win since dining on Thiago Alves' knee at UFC 85: "Bedlam" in June 2008.

The former champ has been particular about his opponents since entering the twilight of his career, but doesn't seem to mind adding another Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fighter to his combat resume.

UFC 117 may feature the put-up-or-shut-up middleweight title fight between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva -- though the promotion has yet to release any details about the August 7 card or its participants.

Stay tuned.

WEC Quick Quote: Jose Aldo wants to give the fans the show they want to see

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 06:56 AM PDT

Jose-aldo-wec_medium

"I don't think it's any surprise what I'm going to do. Everybody sees my style of fighting, I come in aggressive, I come in explosive, and I'm going to come in and always look for the knockout. I'm here to defend my belt. I'm an employee of Zuffa and the WEC, and this is the fight that they put in front of me, so my goal is to go in there and give it my all and give everyone the show that I'm sure everyone wants to see. I'm not going into this fight overconfident. Every time I go into a fight, I don't think about anything else than the opponent that's in front of me. I think Urijah was a great champion, and I'm going in very focused and not overconfident because I know anything can happen in there and I'm just going in prepared for anything."

WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo tells MMA Weekly that fans should expect a show, not surprises, when he tangles with former division title holder Urijah Faber in the hometown of "The California Kid" this Saturday night (April 24) at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California. "Junior" is 6-0 under the WEC banner and has finished all six of his victims by way of (T)KO -- but does Faber have the right skill set to overcome his devastating offense? And if Faber can't do it, who can? Will it take a move up to lightweight? Opinions please.

Strikeforce confirms Gracie vs Randleman and Villasenor vs Souza for 'Heavy Artillery' on May 15

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 06:38 AM PDT

Randleman-gracie_medium

World class grappler and mixed martial arts enigma Roger Gracie will finally make his Strikeforce debut when he tangles with free-falling light heavyweight Kevin Randleman at "Heavy Artillery" on May 15 in St. Louis, MO.

The celebrated ADCC and CBJJ jiu-jitsu champion made his fighting debut back at Bodog’s ‘USA vs. Russia’ event way back in December of 2006, forcing muscular mauler Ron "H20" Waterman say uncle courtesy of a textbook armbar.

Despite showing much promise, Gracie has only competed once since then -- a 2008 submission win over fading Japanese star Yuki Kondo at Sengoku 2 in May of 2008.

He was expected to appear on separate occasions under the Sengoku banner but pulled out of a fight against Travis Wiuff after suffering a rib injury and was then denied a second time when his next opponent, Jeff Monson, fought the law (and the law won).

Despite the layoff, he matches up well against the ice-cold Randleman. While he's a tremendous wrestler bearing a resume littered with the world's top fighters across multiple weight classes, "The Monster" has dropped a staggering 9 of his last 12, including a cardio-deprived decision loss to Mike Whitehead in his Strikeforce debut last June.

And it certainly doesn't help that close to half his losses have come by way of submission.

Speaking of submissions, Greg Jackson product "Smokin'"Joey Villasenor will try to keep his limbs out of the red zone against another gifted grappler when he looks to extend his winning streak to five straight at the expense of Ronaldo Souza.

"Jacare" tapped longtime MMA veteran Matt Lindland in his Strikeforce debut at last December's "Evolution" event after a torrid run through DREAM overseas. Expect to see him in the title mix with a win over Villasenor.

"Heavy Artillery" boasts an impressive line-up of heavyweight attractions with Brett "The Grim" Rogers finally getting his hands on Alistair "Demolition Man" Overeem while Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski tries to return to relevance against Antonio "Junior" Silva.
