Jon Jones next fight against 'one of the top eight guys in the world'

Quoteworthy:

"Vladimir Matyushenko is a guy who I have a a lot of respect for and I didn't think it was going to happen that easy. 'Bones' Jones is the real deal and he just catapulted himself tonight into the top eight in the world. Tonight solidified it. To go in and do what he did to Vladimir Matyushenko, and make it look as easy as he did tonight, it cements it for me. This kid is one of the top eight in the world in that weight division. He's got to keep his head together, stay focused and keep doing all the right things in training. He's smart, good looking and bad ass. He's going to make a lot of money -- this kid is going to do very well. Right now in the 205-pound division, all these guys are fighting each other. When the smoke clears and the dust settles, Jon Jones will fight one of the top eight guys in the world for his next fight."

That was fast ... and we're not talking about Jon Jones' remarkable finish of the very tough and durable Vladimir Matyushenko in the UFC on Versus 2 main event this evening. UFC President Dana White was among the many who was blown away with the performance of his most promising light heavyweight perhaps ever, promising that "Bones" will be tested against the division's best his next time out. With division champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua out with an injury, and Lyoto Machida and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson set to hook 'em later this year, the options on the table right now are limited. Rashad Evans is a training partner, which seemingly dashes that match up ... at least for now. Perhaps the winner of the UFC 119 fight between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ryan Bader? Let's hear it, Maniacs. Make us  a match.

Paul Daley signs 6-fight contract with Strikeforce

Posted: 01 Aug 2010 09:07 PM PDT

The inevitable has come to fruition.

Paul Daley has singed on to fight for Scott Coker and boys at Strikeforce. "Semtex" has agreed to a six-fight deal according to MMA Weekly, as first reported by Middle Easy.

The heavy-handed Brit has of course been looking for a new, more permanent home ever since delivering the cheap shot heard 'round the fighting world to Josh Koscheck following their UFC 113 bout where "Kos" took home a unanimous decision win and earned himself a shot at Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title later this year.

Dana kicked him to the curb, essentially banning the welterweight striker from the UFC for life, but Strikeforce apparently has no qualms in employing the controversial slugger.

Daley was seen in action at Impact FC 2: 'The Uprising' earlier this month as he finished Daniel Acacio in the third round with a forehead-splitting elbow. Paul recently signed on to compete at the upcoming Shark Fights 13 event, and though he still does not have an opponent lined up for that card, he will indeed fight at the September 11 show.

An opponent has yet to be named for "Semtex's" promotional debut with the San Jose-base organization as well, but you have to believe that within the time frame of this contract, Daley and Strikeforce bad boy Nick Diaz will evenutally meet. While we probably won't understand half of the pre-fight trash talk, it is something we can all look forward to anyway.

Who do you want to see Daley mix it up with first in Strikeforce?

Fighter bonuses and awards for UFC on Versus 2: 'Jones vs Matyushenko'

UFC on Versus 2: "Jones vs Matyushenko" from the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, Calif., has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $40,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses, and it should come as no surprise who is leaving the "Golden State" with a little extra jingle in their pockets.

Japanese slugger Takanori Gomi awoke from his powerless slumber by putting the durable Tyson Griffin into an early one this evening to earn "Knockout of the Night" honors. It was a devastating blow that landed right on the "off" button, turning out Griffin's lights for the first time ever and cementing his position in the lightweight division in one fell swoop.

Bravo.

Newcomer Charles Oliveira took home "Submission of the Night," and almost the arm of Darren Elkins, with a super slick and quick first round finish. And middleweights Brian Stann and Mike Massenzio were rewarded for their three round back-and-forth war, which ended with an "All American" submission, to nab "Fight of the Night."

It's too bad the viewers at home didn't get to see it.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC on Versus 2: "Jones vs Matyushenko:"

  • Knockout(s) of the Night — Takanori Gomi
  • Submission of the Night — Charles Oliveira
  • Fight of the Night — Brian Stann vs. Mike Massenzio

Again, each fighter received $40,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

UFC on Versus 2 results, recap and post-fight discussion for 'Jones vs Matyushenko'

Another Sunday night, another generous helping of mixed martial arts action from the good 'ole Zuffa boys.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tonight (Aug. 1, 2010) pulled the trigger on second Sunday night special on the Versus network, emanating live from the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California.

Exciting light heavyweight Jon Jones and grizzled veteran Vladimir Matyushenko were featured in the UFC on Versus 2 main event, pitting the young gun of the division against the wily Belarusian.

Score another one for "Bones."

It took a handful of seconds for the action to start, but when it did, the fight was over quicker than it started. Jones secured a takedown, calmly worked himself into side control and then unleashed a flurry of hellbows to the unguarded grill of Matyushenko.

The referee didn't let it last too long because "The Janitor" could not defend himself. And he didn't argue when the fight was stopped, demonstrating that he knew Jones got him good.

Too good.

Impressive performance once again. Mind boggling, really. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva needs to lock Jones inside the cage against one of the top dogs at 205 pounds sometime soon.

He makes this whole fighting thing look way too easy. Scary stuff.

With a middleweight division thin on possible contenders, Yushin Okami -- who scored a controversial win over 185-pound champion Anderson Silva earlier in their careers -- was on the short list of hopefuls heading into his match up with collegiate wrestling stand out Mark Munoz in the co-featured fight of the night.

Don't scratch him off anytime soon.

"Thunder" squeaked by the "Filipino Wrecking Machine" with a split decision from the three judges sitting ringside, indicating that perhaps a knockdown in round two was more damaging than we all thought. Because other than that, it appeared that he did more than enough to take the fight outright.

In fact, Okami seemingly won the first round, which was more of a technical chess match, and dropped Munoz in the final frame to take two out of three. Regardless, he notched his ninth victory inside the Octagon, putting himself in a solid position to challenge for a title sometime soon.

He's also got two things going for him: The aforementioend win over "The Spider" and one of just two of his UFC losses is to the current number one contender, Chael Sonnen (the other is Rich Franklin).

So whoever wins between Silva and Sonnen next weekend, Okami has the back story, and the resume, to warrant a rematch. The big question is, will Dana White book it or instead hand it to Vitor Belfort on a silver platter?

Time will tell.

John Howard was quietly looking to extend his win streak inside the Octagon to an impressive five straight when he collided with Jake Ellenberger in an extremely underrated welterweight showdown.

Unfortunately for "Doomsday," the ground and pound of the Omaha, Neb., native was just too much to overcome.

Ellenberger took down Howard for two straight rounds, smashing his left eye until it was swollen shut and looked like a grotesque grapefruit. Herb Dean, the referee, didn't like what he saw and called the ringside physician over during a break in the action in round three.

He didn't take long to render a decision -- Howard's night was over. So, too, was his steady climb to the top of the division. Now Ellenberger, who was booed repeatedly tonight for his relentless takedowns, slides into his spot on the up-and-comer list.

And at just 25 years young, he might be there for a very long time ... whether you like it or not.

Former Pride FC posterboy, Takanori Gomi, took on 155-pound tree stump Tyson Griffin in the first fight of the night, hoping to erase the memory of his Octagon debut -- a submission loss to perennial division contender Kenny Florian a few months ago.

All it took was one thundering right hand from "The Fireball Kid."

That's right, Gomi did what no man before him has ever done, finishing Griffin early in the first round with a haymaker from hell. Griffin folded up like a beach chair almost immediately and the stunned Japanese star followed him to the mat to finish what he started.

Welcome back, Tak. That's a big win.

Griffin, who replaced an injured Joe Stevenson tonight, initially protested the stoppage, but the instant replays clearly showed that he was in serious trouble. And suddenly so is he with back-to-back losses -- he needs to turn things around fast.

Can he do it?

That's a wrap from the "America's Finest City," Maniacs. Now it's time to share your thoughts on everything that went down tonight inside the Octagon.

Whatcha got?

Alan Belcher injured, forced out of UFN 22 bout with Demian Maia

Posted: 01 Aug 2010 09:52 AM PDT

Mma_e_belcher-cote013_800_medium

Looks like Alan Belcher won't be getting that poster he was looking for after all.

Some unfortunate news from the Ultimate Fight Night 22 main event participant as "The Talent" recently tweeted the following:

"While I was in brazil I started losing my vision in my right eye. I saw a dr that told me to go back to us immediately. My friend/surgeon from biloxi got me an emergency surgery scheduled in alabama now just trying to recover. No contact for 6 weeks. Sorry to my trainers. Sorry to ufc & demian Maia, I know he has been training specifically for me. Sorry to my fans as well. As long as I get released from dr I will try to make ufn 22 to see my fans and watch the fights."

The angst-ridden middleweight mauler had been clamoring for a major step up in competition. Now he'll have to wait for another opportunity to mix it up with top-level middleweight talent, pun intended.

Belcher (16-6) was last seen using Patrick Cote's head to dig for gold inside the Octagon at UFC 113 earlier this year. It was his second straight win (and second straight finish) after beating the snot out of Wilson Gouveia at UFC 107 in December of 2009.

The outspoken but hard-hitting Belcher wants a middleweight title shot and it would have been hard to argue against him if he could have disposed of the Brazilian with little effort. I guess we'll never know now.

The search for a replacement opponent for Maia is currently underway. MMAmania.com will bring you the news as soon as it breaks.

Roger Gracie: 'St. Pierre doesn't depend only on his strengh and explosion'

Love or hate him, but you can’t say that UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre isn’t always trying to become a better fighter.

"Rush" is a frequent visitor to Brazil, training jiu-jitsu at Nova Uniao -- widely considered one of the best mixed martial arts gyms in the world -- and Gracie Barra, which is often referred to as the top grappling headquarters on the planet.

Sensei SporTV reported the that Canadian, who was recently in England for personal business, took time to visit three-time absolute world champion Roger Gracie. It was no doubt a rare opportunity for St. Pierre to improve the submission aspects of his ever-evolving game game.

Gracie complimented the ground skills of St. Pierre on the ground, saying:

"Georges is a great guy (as a person). As for his Jiu-Jitsu, he has a good technique, and that’s so true that he doesn’t depend only on his strength and explosion – his main skills on MMA".

The Gracie prospect also revealed his intention to compete in one more MMA fight before the end of the year , but there is currently nothing to report on that front as of now. Meanwhile, on the iju-jitsu front, Gracie plans not to compete until 2011.

Undefeated in MMA with three victories by submission, Gracie is coming off a win over veteran Kevin Randleman at Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery." He is currently in England where he intends to run an academy.

This just keeps getting better and better.

We're back again with another contest, but this time our good friends at Tokyo Five have raised the stakes, giving away a customized Tokyo Five iPad.

Yes, an iPad!

MMAmania.com is proud to announce a UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" contest give-a-way is currently underway and will remain in effect until Saturday night (Aug. 7) at 10 p.m. ET.

What's the reason?

Ricardo Almeida, a Tokyo Five-sponsored fighter -- who also happens to be among the "Big Dogs" in the stacked welterweight division -- will return to the cage to take on UFC Hall of Famer, Matt Hughes, next weekend. His walkout shirt is also now available for a LIMITED TIME exclusively at MMAWarehouse.com (CLICK HERE to see/buy it now).

What do you have to do to win?

It's simple (and familiar): Just provide your fight prediction for Ricardo's upcoming bout against Hughes on the main card of UFC 117 (ex. Almeida defeats Hughes via TKO in round 3 at 2:48; or Hughes defeats Almeida via KO in round 1 at 1:58).

So it's winner, round, method and time. One entry per reader ... so make it count! If you pick a decision be sure to include the official time, as well as guess the potential scores for each round (10-9, 10-9, 8-10, etc.)

And to be on the safe side, all entries that pick a decision win must include a tie-breaker pick from the Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen fight. Same criteria as above.

Use our contest email (contest@mmamania.com) to submit your answers. To enter CLICK HERE. Do NOT leave entries/predictions in the comments section below.

Be sure to submit correct contact information so we can contact you when you win AN iPAD -- good luck!
