Bellator 25 results from Chicago Theatre on Aug. 19

Bellator 25 CHICAGO, Ill. (August 19, 2010) — Bellator Fighting Championships returned again to its backyard at the historic Chicago Theatre with Bellator 25 for an action-packed night, featuring Season 3 Heavyweight and Women’s Tournament fights.

Owning the fireworks of the night was Season 2 Welterweight Tournament finalist Dan "The Handler" Hornbuckle and UFC Vet "Bad" Brad Blackburn in the special feature fight.

Blackburn showed crisp striking early, connecting with an uppercut that knocked Hornbuckle to the ground. Hornbuckle found his range in the second round, landing brutal body kicks followed by quick jabs that eventually scored a knockdown late in the round.

In third and final round, each fighter was content to stand and bang, leaving it all in the cage. Hornbuckle’s quickness proved to be a deciding factor, allowing him to pick Blackburn apart with precise strikes. The judges saw the fight in Hornbuckle’s favor with a 29-28 unanimous decision, improving The Handler’s record to an astounding 22-3.

"Dan Hornbuckle wanted the toughest fight we could provide him as soon as possible after his loss to Ben," said Bjorn Rebney. "Brad stepped up and these two gave us a back and forth war that was undeniably the fight of the night."

In an opening round Heavyweight Tournament fight, undefeated Polish sensation Damian "The Polish Pitbull" Grabowski took on the ever-powerful Scott Barrett.

Barrett scored an early takedown in the first round, but Grabowski eventually reversed and punished Barrett from the top position. In second round action, Barrett put Grabowski on his back again, which was reversed yet again by Grabowski.

In the third round Grabowski proved to be fresher, wearing down Barrett with dynamic strikes from every angle. Barrett made a late third round takedown by Barrett but that was not enough in the judges’ eyes who saw the fight unanimously 30-27 for the still-undefeated Grabowski.

Turning to the Women’s Tournament, Zoila "Warrior Princess" Frausto, whose KO of Rosi Sexton entered her into the Season 3 Women’s Tournament, met submission ace Jessica Pene in a quarterfinal fight.

Zoila Frausto proved to be too powerful for Pene, who was unable to take Frausto to the ground. After 15 minutes of action, it was Frausto who progressed to the semi-final round with a unanimous decision victory, improving her record to 8-1.

In a much-anticipated international Heavyweight Tournament match-up, two-time NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion Cole Konrad took on dangerous Spanish submission fighter Rogent Lloret.

Konrad showed he was comfortable standing with Lloret, showing improved striking throughout the second round. However, Konrad overpowered the Spaniard down, taking him down in the third round where he imposed his will until the bell. Konrad advanced to the Season 3 Heavyweight semi-finalist round with a unanimous decision victory, improving his perfect record to 5-0.

"It’s great to be here in Chicago, we have spectacular alliance with Madison Square Garden that allows us to put on these magical fights in our hometown," said Rebney "We are lucky to be able to continue to grow our brand in this great city."

WEC 50: Scott Jorgensen is coming for Dominick Cruz and the bantamweight belt

And had some pretty confident words for the champ at the WEC 50 post-fight press conference:

"It's exciting for me to hopefully be able to get that title shot against Dominick (Cruz) and take the belt from him. I honestly think I'm a better striker than Dominick, he just moves at a great rate and creates different angles -- but my wrestling is better than his. If I wanna take someone down, I will. I'll find a way. If he wants to stop them then I've got other tricks in my bag. For me it would be a great fight, I feel I'm stronger than him in every area and I'll bring that belt back."

Fresh off his "Fight of the Night" win over Brad Pickett at WEC 50 on Aug. 18 in Las Vegas, Scott Jorgensen has set his sights on the reigning division champion Dominick Cruz, who outlasted Joseph Benavidez at the same event to retain his 135-pound title. Does "Young Guns" have the ammunition to stop Cruz' reign as champion? Or will he find himself getting more than he bargained for if and when they fight? Opinions please.

UFC Quick Quote: Jon 'Bones' Jones vs Stupid 'Slow' White Boy?

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 02:37 PM PDT

Mma_silva_griffin033_576_medium

"I hope I am not fighting Jon 'Bones' Jones. I might be. F*ck it; if I am, I am. I will do it, but I am not even training right now. That is a bad dude. That dude will whoop my ass. F*ck it. What is the worst, I mean, it could not be worse than Anderson Silva. It should not be worse than that, right? Every fight I go into, no matter what happens, it could not be worse than Anderson Silva. Because that sh*t was a year ago and literally every day people ask me something about that - 'What happened? What happened?' [Anderson punched me in the chin] Repeatedly and I was very confused. I tried to punch him and he literally moved his head out of the way and looked at me like I was stupid for doing it. He looked at me like - 'Why would you do such a stupid thing?' He looked at me like - 'Oh, did you really think you were going to hit me? What a stupid thing to think, you slow slow white boy.' Then he punched me. I felt embarrassed for even trying to punch him."

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin tells Jason Ellis (via Bloody Elbow) that facing Jon Jones is like fighting Anderson Silva in that he'll probably get his ass kicked inside of three minutes. Is "Bones" going to be paired up with Griffin in late 2010/early 2011? Or is the new best-selling author too busy selling books to see the inside of a cage in time to throw down with the future star?

UFC 121 'Prelims' to feature McGee vs Jensen, Cote vs Lawlor on Spike TV

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 02:13 PM PDT

Mcgee-jensen_medium_medium

Spike TV today announced that its UFC 121 "Prelims" telecast will include a pair of middleweight bouts featuring the previously reported match-ups of Court McGee vs. Ryan Jensen and Patrick Cote vs. Tom Lawlor.

UFC 121 is set for Saturday, October 23 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

McGee (10-1) successfully managed to beat out the competition on the The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 reality show, capping off his unlikely run with a submission win over Kris McCray at the TUF 11 Finale back in June.

"The Crusher" entered the TUF house with quite an impressive resume, carrying a record of 8-1 with his only loss coming to storied veteran Jeremy Horn.

McGee's well-rounded game coupled with his sponge-like absorption of Team Liddell's coaching during the show did the Utah-bred fighter well. And with a considerable amount of time to take his game to yet another level since the end of the reality show competition, his days as an underdog my very well be over.

Jensen (15-6) was last seen in action at UFC 114: "Rampage vs. Evans" where he submitted Jesse Forbes via guillotine choke in the first round to run his UFC record to 2-2, and his overall record to 15-6.

Having competed against guys like Mark Munoz, Thales Leites, Joey Villasenor, and Demian Maia; the Jackson's Submission Fighting product will no doubt be up to the challenge in facing the new kid on the block.

Joining them will be Patrick Cote (13-6), who made his first appearance inside the cage after nearly 20 months on the sidelines to tangle with Alan Belcher at UFC 113 from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 1.

It did not end well.

"The Predator" was submitted by "The Talent" after a controversial piledriver left him stiffer than a frozen mukluk. It was Cote's first bout since shredding his knee while inside the Octagon opposite reigning division champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90 way back in October 2008.

Lawlor (6-3) has probably reached DEFCON 5 following back-to-back losses to Aaron Simpson (UFC Fight Night 20) and Joe Doerksen (UFC 113).

Despite one of the most entertaining entrances in the business and a memorable run on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 8 (from an antics perspective), dropping three straight contests doesn't bode well for anyone looking for longevity in the fight game.

Anyone thinking that maybe "The Filthy Mauler" gets the job done?

Headlined by Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez, UFC 121 will also feature the Octagon debut of Jake Shields when he takes on Martin Kampmann.

Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed Lawal has a message for "bandwagon jumpers" who "ain't" educated. And that message is the F-word. Can you appreciate the champ's frustration with some of the fans, who spend most of their time Online hating and desecrating? Or does "King Mo" need to do a better job of keeping his emotions in check? Any MMA fans offended by his latest message?

Strikeforce Houston: Will Chad Griggs prove that Bobby Lashley was a bad investment?

Quoteworthy:

"Everybody, including Strikeforce, is planning on him winning. They need him to win to keep their investment going. It's not bothering me. If anything, it takes the pressure off me to get in there and go do my thing. Once we get in there, there isn't anybody but me and him in there, so it doesn't matter what they think or what they're saying. I think I have a lot more experience when it comes in to the fight. I think his name is bigger, but when it comes down to it, I don't know if he's been hit in the face. He's wrestled people down and beats them up, so I don't really know if he's tasted fighting yet. That's our goal is to get in there and let him realize this is a fight and I'm here to win, too."

Strikeforce heavyweight Chad Griggs wants Bobby Lashley to join the likes of Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko as the latest high-profile (and high price tag) Strikeforce acquisition to fall despite being a heavy favorite with the bookmakers. "The Grave Digger" will get his chance when they collide at the upcoming "Houston" event on Aug. 21 and could elevate his status considerably by upsetting the "Dominator." Does Griggs have a shot at playing spoiler? Or will a suffocating wrestling attack once again save a fighter from getting KTFO?

UFC Fight Night 22: Efrain Escudero vs Matt Wiman booked with Mac Danzig hurt, Yves Edwards returns

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 07:21 AM PDT

Escudero-wiman_medium

Thug-jitsu is back, son.

The UFC continues to Frankenstein its upcoming "Fight Night 22" fight card, this time after former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 Champion Mac Danzig was forced to withdraw from the Spike TV event following an injury to his pectoral muscle and a pinched nerve.

MMA Weekly brings confirmation of the change in plans, and also indicates that fellow TUF champ Efrain Escudero will abandon John Gunderson at the undercard altar to step in for the Vegan warrior in the night's co-main event.

Enter Yves Edwards.

The UFC veteran returns to the Octagon for the first time since a TKO loss to Joe Stevenson way back at UFC 61: "Bitter Rivals" over four years ago. In addition to the UFC, the master of Thug-jitsu has fought for PRIDE, Strikeforce, EliteXC and just about any other promotion you can think of.

The Texan, fresh off a Bellator 25 win over Luis Palomino, has been mixing it up since late 1997 and would no doubt like to leave UFC fans with a better memory than the one left by his last performance under the Zuffa banner.

The only thing standing in his way are the "Quick Guns" of John Gunderson.

To catch up on all the recent changes to the UFC Fight Night 22: "Marquardt vs. Palhares" fight card, scheduled as the lead-in to the twelfth season of TUF on Sept. 15, check out the current (for now) line-up by clicking here.

WEC 50 bonuses and awards for 'Cruz vs Benavidez' on Versus

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 06:53 AM PDT

WEC 50: "Cruz vs. Benavidez" from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, is officially in the books, which means that a couple of fighters who busted their asses inside the cage are getting rewarded for it.

The promotion is cutting checks for $10,000 to each fight bonus recipient -- the same as WEC 49: "Varner vs. Shalorus" but a far cry from the 65k doled out after the "Aldo vs. Gamburyan" (A.K.A. WEC 48) pay-per-view back in April.

In addition to their base salaries, the WEC awarded bantamweight brawlers Scott Jorgensen and Brad Pickett "Fight of the Night" for their thrilling, back-and-forth war of attrition that "Young Guns" took via unanimous decision.

Undefeated lightweight phenom Maciej Jewtuszko made his WEC debut a memorable one, earning "Knockout of the Night" by sending Anthony Njokuani on a weekend cruise with Rip Van Winkle. Including last night's stoppage, "Irokez" has finished all eight of his victims.

Finally, WEC lightweight contender Anthony Pettis made a fairly convincing argument for a shot at division champion Ben Henderson after securing "Submission of the Night" against Shane Roller. "Showtime" came through in the clutch with a triangle choke just seconds before time expired.

Here are the special fight bonuses for WEC 50:

Fight of the Night — Scott Jorgensen vs. Brad Pickett
Knockout of the Night — Macjei Jewtuszko
Submission of the Night — Anthony Pettis

Again, each fighter received $10,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which can be viewed by clicking here.
