Strikeforce Challengers 10 recap and post-fight discussion for 'Riggs vs Taylor'

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 11:34 PM PDT

Strikef10recap_medium

Strikeforce Challengers X has come to a close from the Dodge Theater in Phoenix, Arizona and there is a new number one contender in the 135-pound female division.

Her name is Miesha Tate.

But first things first. In the headliner, Joe Riggs and knockout artist Louis Taylor locked up in a 182 pound catchweight bout, and the veteran Riggs surprisingly had a hard time settling in against the up-and-coming prospect.

Both men were tentative to exchange early on, but Taylor was successful in other areas, using timely takedowns to clearly win the second round and possibly even the first. However, Riggs turned up the pressure in the third frame and stunned "Handgunz" with a perfectly placed counter left hook.

That was the beginning of the end for Taylor as he never fully recovered from the punch. "Diesel" took him right to the mat where he was able to secure a crucifix position and pound him into submission.

It was a slow start for the UFC veteran, but Riggs did what he needed to do to get the victory. Afterward he was asked about who he'd like to face next, and he wasted no time calling out champion Nick Diaz, saying, "I already beat his ass once and I'll do it again."

Now, on to Tate and how she made her way through the four-women, single elimination, number one contender eliminator tournament for the women's welterweight division.

She kicked off the Showtime telecast by grinding out a two-round unanimous decision win over Finnish striker Maiju Kujala in the first semifinal bout. She used her trademark takedowns to secure the victory over "Maki," who proved to be a very game opponent.

Miesha appeared to expend a lot of energy in the fight because Kujala's takedown defense was pretty solid and they spent a lot of time in the clinch. It certainly wasn't a pretty win, but she earned her spot in the final nonetheless.

Her opponent in that final was decided when Japanese judo specialist and grappling wizard Hitomi Akano overcame a slow start and an aggressive Carina Damm to score a submission win midway through the second round of the other semifinal fight.

The "Girlfight Monster" proved once again that she can absorb punishment and still remain competitive in a fight. Akano wasn't mistaking Damm for "Cyborg" Santos or anything, but the Brazilian was definitely in control of the fight early on after landing several punches and kicks, including at least one brutal spinning backfist.

Akano's ground skills were super impressive, though, and in the end she handed Damm, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, the third submission loss of her career.

In the final, neither fighter looked to really having any sort of hangover effects from their first fights. Both women actually fought with good energy for the entire three rounds.

Tate basically just did more of what she does best to bring home this decision, too, which means takedowns and ground control. She spent the majority of the second and third rounds latched onto Akano's back on the ground. She was unable to secure the choke, but nobody has ever submitted Akano in an MMA fight, so there's no shame there.

Akano stayed tough and tried to pick her spots for reversals and submission attempts, but Miesha's wrestling and ground control was too good. With the win Tate earned a well deserved spot in a future title fight against the winner between Sarah Kaufman and Marloes Coenen.

In non-tournament action, Ryan Couture, son of UFC hall of famer Randy Couture, made his professional mixed martial arts debut a successful one when he strapped a slick triangle choke on fellow up and comer Lucas Stark just over a minute into the first round.

Ryan has a long way to go to live up to his father's household name, but he's certainly off to a good start. Don't be surprised to see Strikeforce place him on more Challenger cards in the very near future.

That's a wrap from the Dodge Theater in Phoenix. If you missed any of the live action you can get up to speed with out blow-by-blow coverage here.

Next up for Strikeforce is a trip to the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on August 21 for another Showtime televised event. Two of the promotion's world titles will be on the line as light heavyweight champion King Mo Lawal defends his gold against top Brazilian contender Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante in the featured main event while Tim Kennedy and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza square off for the vacant middleweight strap in the co-headliner.

A lightweight battle between KJ Noons and Jorge Gurgel is also slated for the main card, as well as a heavyweight affair between Bobby Lashley and Chad Griggs.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on Strikeforce: "Houston."

Fight Me MMA weigh in results for 'Neer vs Finney' on Aug. 14 in St. Louis

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 11:28 PM PDT

Fight-me_medium

ST. LOUIS, MO (August 13, 2010) - A heated staredown between main event fighters Jesse Finney and Josh Neer highlighted the weigh-ins on Friday in preparation for "Fight Me 1: The Battle Begins! Finney vs. Neer."

Before a raucous crowd at the Sheraton Westport hotel in St. Louis, Neer and Finney traded barbs after both made weight for the 175-pound catchweight fight.

That main event highlights the debut for Fight Me, which is expected to draw a standing-room only crowd of more than 11,000 at the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO on Saturday.

The verbal exchange started immediately after Neer gave his prediction for the fight. "My prediction is first-round knockout. That's it," Neer bluntly said.

The duo went back and forth after that, but will wait to settle their differences on Saturday.

After a busy promotional week, the hometown Finney is ready to step into the cage with the UFC veteran. "I'm just excited now," said Finney, who weighed in at 174 pounds. "At this point, I'm ready to fight. I've worked my whole game. I'll probably be close to 200 pounds when I get in there and I'm going to use that to my advantage."

Finney also expects to feel a surge from a crowd that will fill Family Arena to capacity.

"It's going to be a huge adrenaline rush," Finney said. "My adrenaline's going to go through the roof."
Neer weighed in at 174 pounds as well and appeared calm throughout the weigh-in festivities.

All 20 fighters made weight for the 10-bout Fight Me debut, including co-main event fighters Lucas Lopes and Brendan Seguin.

For the middleweight fight, Seguin weighed in at exactly 185 pounds, while Lopes checked in at 183.

Another fight of interest is a bout between former "Ultimate Fighter" contestant Cale Yarbrough (7-1) and Strikeforce veteran Kiko France (5-1).

Despite taking the fight with less than a week's notice, Yarbrough checked in at 202 pounds and appeared to be in good shape.

"I'm confident what I can do on short notice," Yarbrough said. "I'm in shape and I feel fine. When I'm always training like this, I can take a fight at any time."
France hoped to utilize his jiu-jitsu skills to get his sixth submission victory.

"I want a first-round submission and to show him how we do it in Brazil," France said.

Fight Me President and CEO Kenny Nowling also laid out a set of enticing bonuses for each fighter:
• $5,000 for a head-kick knockout
• $500 for a knockout victory
• $500 for a submission victory
• $5,000 for knockout of the night

The first fight is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

UFC 118: James Toney doesn't care about David 'Gay' or Bernard Hopkins and his busted teeth

"I don't like neither one of them anyway so it don't matter. I don't care about the boxing community. I care about James Toney. It's about James Toney and Randy Couture. It's not about James Toney and boxing and James Toney and MMA. This is James Toney and Randy Couture so for Bernard he can go somewhere and get his damn teeth fixed. And David Haye, he's gay. I don't care about none of that. So they can just listen to all their bull****."

James Toney is unfazed by criticism directed towards his decision to enter the Octagon against five time UFC champion Randy Couture at UFC 118 on Aug. 28 in Boston. Bernard Hopkins is convinced it will be "Lights Out" for the aging pugilist and David Haye called Toney "delusional" for trying to make it as an MMA fighter. Anyone think the boxing community will be eating crow the morning after?

Hector Lombard to defend Bellator middleweight title against Alexander Shlemenko in October

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 12:02 PM PDT

Hector-lombard_medium

Fresh off his drubbing of yet another lackluster opponent, Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard has been asked to put his 185-pound strap on the line against ruthless Russian Alexander Shlemenko later this year.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney made the announcement at last night's Bellator 24 post-fight press conference.

"Tonight proved to be another great night of fights at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. We love coming here and can not wait for our return in October when Hector Lombard will face Alexander Shlemenko for the Bellator Middleweight Championship."

Lombard's 38-second knockout of "Whisper" Goodman on Aug. 12 ran his unbeaten streak to 20, an impressive feat no matter the level of competition, which has recently come under some scrutiny. The 27-2-1 fighter has now finished 15 of his victims via KO.

"Hektor's" middleweight title defense, likely for October 28 at Bellator 34, will see him take a step up in competition, albeit a minor one, as he faces the 26-year old Shlemenko.

"Storm" has been on an impressive run of his own, suffering defeat only once in his last 16 contests. Alexander has gone 5-0 in 2010, most recently finishing Bryan Baker in the first round back at Bellator 23 in June.

With a career mark of 30-4, the 5'11" kickboxing ace has a chance to make a huge statement against the Mike Tyson-esque Lombard this fall.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on Bellator 34 as it becomes available.

Matt Lindland: The 'salesman' in Chael Sonnen comes from his pro wrestling fandom

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 11:01 AM PDT

Quoteworthy:

"First of all, Chael's always been a big pro wrestling fan. First and foremost. So we studied that sport and the entertainment side of the business for a long time. And I have to give Chael all the credit for going out there and doing it. Obviously he's a very intelligent man to be able to pull that off. To get people to believe it and buy into it, to actually believe it so much that they did it with their wallet. They opened up their wallets and said 'I believe in this so much I'm going to go ahead and put my money down to see you prove it.'  That says a lot. It shows what kind of salesman he is."

The show that Chael Sonnen put on in the lead up to UFC 117 was as polarizing as any fighter's hype job in recent memory. Dude said some crazy stuff. And though it appeared that Sonnen believed most, if not all, of what was coming out of his mouth, his coach and fellow Team Quest representative Matt Lindland says it was all part of his brilliant plan. "The Law" claims that Chael reverted back to his days of being a pro wrestling fan to do the best he could in selling the UFC 117 main event. And boy did it work. Early reports have the pay-per-view buy number at right around one million. So, my question to you is this: Are you for or against fighters blending the lines between professional wrestling and professional mixed martial arts when it comes to selling a fight? Sound off, Maniacs.

WEC 51: Mike Brown vs Cole Province official for September 30

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 10:18 AM PDT

Mma_a_brown_576_medium

Former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown will try to right the ship on September 30 in Broomfield, Colorado at WEC 51 as he takes on Cole Province. The promotion deemed the match up official earlier today.

"MTB" had a rough go of it last time out at WEC 48 as he succumbed to the power of Manvel Gamburyan via a first round knockout. That fight propelled Manny to a title shot against Jose Aldo, which is also set for WEC 51, and sent Brown back to the drawing board.

Again.

After reeling off ten straight wins from 2006 to 2009, Mike has tasted defeat in two of his last three bouts. The American Top Team stalwart will be eagerly awaiting a chance to prove he still remains in the discussion of the best 145-pounders in the world.

The 29-year old Province last fought in the WEC back in August of 2009 at WEC 42 where he had his split decision victory over Fredson Paixao overturned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after he tested positive for banned substances in a post-fight drug test.

Cole rebounded at Bricktown Brawl 5 in June of this year where he finished Nick Masters via submission not even a full minute into round one.

His only other fight in the WEC resulted in a loss against Diego Nunes at WEC 37. The 6-1 Delaware product most assuredly has his work cut out for him.

... by closing out MMA Live with a little message for "The Count."

"If Michael Bisping ever addresses me in public comments again, I'll bury him where he stands."

Chael Sonnen is apparently not amused by Bisping's sense of humor after the Brit tweeted this during UFC 117 on Aug. 7.

Bellator 33: Eddie Alvarez vs Roger Huerta booked for Oct. 21 with Pat Curran hurt

Former UFC lightweight contender and Bellator special attraction Roger Huerta (21-4-1) will need to take a hiatus from his role as avenging angel and go from stomping misogynists to battling division standout Eddie Alvarez (20-2) on Oct. 21.

The promotion yesterday announced that "El Matador" would step in for Pat Curran, who upset Huerta back in May en route to capturing the 2010 Bellator Lightweight Tournament by defeating Toby Imada on June 10.

Curran was forced to withdraw from the upcoming contest due to an undisclosed injury.

After staying perfect through 17 consecutive appearances, Huerta dropped back-to-back fights to Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard under the Zuffa banner. Acting, modeling and the pursuit of greener pastures kept the former Sports Illustrated cover model from inking a new UFC deal.

A submission win over Chad Hinton marked his much-ballyhooed Bellator debut, but he would get beaten to the punch by a busier Curran to bow out of the lightweight tournament and what initially seemed like a date with destiny against Alvarez.

Now he gets to fight the Philadelphia native after all; however, it won't be for the promotion's lightweight title and is instead being billed as a three round "Super Fight."

Those were the same circumstances for his last fight in Bellator, when Alvarez took on UFC castaway Josh Neer.

The part-time DREAM competitor made a mockery of "The Dentist's" takedown defense before cruising to a third round submission win, his fifth straight in as many attempts.

Curran remains the division's number one contender and is expected to challenge Alvarez for the 155-pound strap at some point in 2011.

A Huerta win, naturally, would only serve to complicate matters.

Bellator 33 is expected to take place on Oct. 21 at the Kansas City Power & Light District in Missouri and air live via Fox Sports Net.

Ben Saunders released from the UFC following Aug. 7 loss to Dennis Hallman

"Killa B" announces the unfortunate news via his official Facebook page:

"Sorry everyone I tried to fight my best these past two fights but ended up getting outworked. The UFC has officially cut me. The good news is they told me to work on my wrestling and ground game and then come back. So that is all I am going to be doing, improving dramatically and show them I belong. Much respect to Swick, Fitch, and Hallman as they were the better men on those nights and have my full respect. To fight such names is a true honor."

Saunders had heart, stepping up for the Fitch fight at UFC 111. There's still a number of fights I'd like to see him in like Anthony Johnson, Dan Hardy and Phil Baroni.

Anyone else sorry to see him go?
