Latest UFC 118 odds and betting lines for 'Edgar vs Penn 2' on Aug. 28

Ufc118_550x237_medium

The clock is ticking ... literally.

We're just a few days away from the upcoming UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2" pay-per-view (PPV) event, which will take place from the TD Garden in Boston, Mass., on Saturday, Aug. 28.

And the closer we get to showtime, is less time that you have to place your bets.

This weekend's action is, of course, headlined by UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar, taking on number one contender -- and perhaps the most dominant 155-pound fighter in the world -- BJ Penn.

Edgar had "The Answer" for the "Prodigy" in their first go-around earlier this year, sticking and moving en route to a unanimous decision win in Abu Dhabi. Despite their history, Penn currently sits as a solid favorite (-450) as the challenger, making the champion a decent underdog bet (+250).

It might not surprise you who the underdog is in the "UFC vs. Boxing" co main event between Randy Couture and James Toney; however, the massive spread will more than likely make you do a double take. We're talking Matt Serra UFC 69-type odds, folks.

No joke... unlike, perhaps, the sideshow pairing.

Here are the latest UFC 118 odds (- = favorite; + = underdog):

BJ Penn -350 BET NOW
Frank Edgar +250 BET NOW
Randy Couture
-700 BET NOW
James Toney
+450 BET NOW
Kenny Florian
-160 BET NOW
Gray Maynard
+130 BET NOW
Nate Diaz
-210 BET NOW
Marcus Davis
+165 BET NOW
Andre Winner
-120 BET NOW
Nik Lentz
-110 BET NOW
Nick Osipczack
-140 BET NOW
Greg Soto
+110 BET NOW

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of UFC 118 beginning with the PPV telecast at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 28. In addition, we will deliver up-to-the-minute quick results of all the under card action much earlier on fight night.

Shine fans asked to select match ups for its eight-man, single-elimination grand prix tournament on Sept. 10

FAIRFAX, VA (August 23, 2010) - In their quest to mold Shine Fights Promotions into MMA's most fan-friendly organization, CEO Devin Price and COO Jason Chambers have taken the unprecedented step of allowing Shine fans to play matchmaker for the company's upcoming Lightweight Grand Prix Tournament, which will be televised nationally on Pay Per View.

Eight of the fight world’s best 155-pound competitors have been selected to put their skills to the test against one another on Sept 10th at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

History will be made, as fans have never been given the opportunity to actually choose the fights they want to see. Now, they can mix and match those eight fighters in order to create the four opening-round bouts that they want to see.

The combinations with the most votes will be selected as the official bouts. Suggestions should be emailed to GrandPrixPick@Shinefights.com.

"Every MMA organization tells fans what fights they are going to see, even though the fans are the ones paying the money," said Chambers. "We are saying, 'You are buying the PPV, you are buying the tickets, so you tell us what you want to watch. We feel it’s one of the most unique opportunities fight fans have been given to date!"

"We decided to go with a one night eight man tournament because we wanted to give fans what we knew they really wanted", said Devin Price. "By having the fans choose the first round fighters we are involving them in a direct way. We value their opinion and respect their knowledge."

Below is a list of the eight competitors who are eligible to be matched by fans:

Rich "Cleat" Crunkilton: 16-3 (7 TKO/KOs, 6 submissions). The 30-year-old Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native is known for his devastating throws and slams, high kicks, and wild punches. A product of the famed American Kickboxing Academy, "Cleat" has faced top 155ers during the course of his career, including Bao Quach, Hermes Franca, former WEC Lightweight Champion "Razor" Rob McCullough, and "The Fugitive" Dave Hansen.

Josh Shockley: 6-0-1 (3 TKO/KOs, 2 submissions). Only 19 years of age, Shockley has made a name for himself through his athleticism and skills. Never beaten, this rising star is the youngest entry in the tournament. He is also a finisher, with five of his victories coming via stoppage. He fights out of Duneland Vale Tudo with training partners Keith Wisniewski, Darren Elkins, and Mark Burch.

Drew Fickett: 37-13 (3 TKO/KOs, 26 submissions). This Tucson, Arizona native is only 30 years old but has competed in fifty professional fights. A submission specialist, he holds notable victories over UFC stalwarts Josh Koscheck, Kurt Pellegrino, Dennis Hallman, and Kenny Florian, as well as UFC veterans Josh Neer, Edwin DeWees, Keita Nakamura, Mark Weir, and Derrick Noble. In addition, he defeated fellow tourney entrant Carlo Prater via submission in their first bout back in 2004.

Carlo Prater: 24-7-1 (2 TKO/KOs, 12 submissions). Hailing from Sao Paolo, Brazil, Prater began competing in professional mixed martial arts in 2002. The ground fighter challenged then-WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit for the title at WEC 32 in 2008, putting up a valiant effort before succumbing to his bigger opponent. Now based in Texas, Prater has set his eyes on the Shine title. He possesses notable victories over UFC lightweight Spencer "The King" Fisher, Condit (in their first bout), Strikeforce fighter Pat Healy, and UFC veteran Keith Wisniewski.

James Warfield: 21-6 (15 TKO/KOs and 6 submissions). A veteran of many MMA organizations, Warfield is known for his reputation as a finisher, having never won by anything other than a stoppage. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin native trained in Jeet Kune Do and karate as a child, but has blossomed into a full-fledged mixed martial artist. He’s faced quality competition throughout his six-year fight career, including UFC veteran Rory Markham, former TUF contestant Seth Baczynski, and former top ten-ranked lightweight Yves Edwards.

Marcus Aurelio: 20-8 (4 TKO/KOs, 13 submissions). This Brazilian put his name on the MMA map in 2006 when he put the top-ranked lightweight in the world at that time, Takanori Gomi, to sleep with an arm-triangle. A multi-time veteran of PRIDE and the UFC, the BJJ black belt has garnered a reputation for being difficult to stop, having never been knocked out or submitted. His ground game is second to none, and the 36 year-old holds wins over Gomi, Masakazu Imanari, Rich Clementi, and Daisuke Nakamura.

Dennis Bermudez: 8-0 (3 TKO/KOs, 1 submission). An accomplished amateur wrestler, Bermudez utilizes his ground game to the fullest in the cage. He turned pro in 2009, and has already competed in MMA eight times. A training partner of top WEC star Urijah Faber, the compact Bermudez is a threat to any fighter on the ground.

Charles Bennett: 23-17-2 (14 TKO/KOs, 6 submissions). One of the most controversial fighters in MMA history, the 30-year-old Ocala, Florida native is known for his antics in and out of the cage. He’s been known to insult opponents, disrespect referees, and has even brawled with other fighters backstage. Once quoted at saying that ground fighting "is like making love … it's not real fighting," Krazy Horse has attempted to clean up his act in recent years. Regardless, fight fans know that they will be entertained when "Krazy Horse" is on the card. Bennett holds notable wins over former Elite XC Lightweight Champion KJ Noons, UFC veteran Gerald Strebendt, and WEC Bantamweight contender Yoshiro Maeda, and has faced some of the world’s best lightweights in Takanori Gomi, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Jeff Curran, and Urijah Faber.

The MMA showdown will be beamed on PPV on cable and satellite in the United States and Canada. The event will be in High Definition and it will be available in both English and Spanish (where available). The MMA showdown will be distributed live on Pay Per View beginning at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST by Multi Vision Media, Inc. The suggested retail price is $29.95.

Frank Mir: 'I don't think 'Cro Cop' has lost a step'

"I don't know if he's ever really lost his step. I just think the fighters now in the UFC are just a little bit more aggressive than the fighters in PRIDE. Studying tape on him, I noticed that guys that back away from him and give him that respect, it seems like they get unleashed on a little harder than the guys that come forward... I think Cro Cop has a good sprawl, he has a good double underhooks. I think if I were to try to just drop and shoot on him, he would stop my shot. I think standing up with him is actually the route to go at first and then eventually when you work in the clinch, going to the ground is obviously a lot easier to do with him than Nogueira."

The new look UFC 119 main event, set for September 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana, features a heavyweight match up between Frank Mir and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. The former UFC champ today told Ariel Helwani that he actually believes "Cro Cop" hasn't regressed over the years, just that  his opponents have progressed. Mir also stated that taking Filipovic to the ground, if he chooses to do so, will be far easier than it would have been taking down his original UFC 119 counterpart, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. How about some early takes on this intriguing heavyweight tilt?

UFC Quick Quote: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was proud of Anderson Silva following UFC 117

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 02:15 PM PDT

Noguiera-1800web_medium

"We were very worried with the injury but he made the right decision in fighting. It like seems a joke but I posted this on Twitter. In the latest seconds before his entrance into the Octagon he embraced me and said, 'Stay calm, master, I’m going to finish this fight.' Anderson is a very dangerous athlete. He was trying that triangle in the second and forth rounds and almost knocked Sonnen out. No doubt those unprofessional statements by Chael made him even more thirsty. His high technique level and championship heart made him to finish the fight with just two minutes remaining to the end. Anderson made us full of pride."

Likely out of contention himself for six months, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira commented on the UFC 117 main event in which his friend and middleweight champion Anderson Silva faced Chael Sonnen in one of the most hyped and exciting fights of the year. As for Rodrigo's future, "Big Nog" told MMAAllStars that his doctor advised him to treat the old injuries (knee and hips) to come back stronger and at the same level of his heavyweight opponents. The doctor also told Rodrigo he would fight at just 60% of his capacity versus Frank Mir if he had decided to face off against the former champion this September. So, who would you like to see Minotauro face when he returns? Should the UFC give it one last go in trying to set up Mir vs. Nogueira 2?

UFC 122: Alessio Sakara vs Jorge Rivera rescheduled for November in Germany

Let's give this one more shot.

After originally agreeing to fight at UFC 118 which is set for this weekend in Boston, only to both suffer injuries and be forced to pull out, middleweights Alessio Sakara and Jorge Rivera will now meet at UFC 122 on Novemebr 13 in Germany. This according to MMA Weekly.

After toiling with mediocrity for just about five years in more than 10 fights, switching weight classes and training camps, Alessio Sakara appeared to be on the verge of his big break, getting matched up against former number one contender Nate Marquardt at UFC 116 on July 3 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unfortunately, the Italian striker had to pull out of the contest with "The Great" due to the untimely death of his father. The fight with Rivera was announced shortly thereafter.

"Legionarius" has put together a decent win streak over the last few months. Having defeated the likes of Thales Leites at UFC 101 and most recently James Irvin at UFC on Versus 1, Sakara had put himself in position to really climb up the middleweight ladder.

Rivera is coming off a dismantling of Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night 21 back in March and has won three straight bouts raising his professional record to 18-7.

The longtime UFC veteran now has a career mark of 7-5 in the UFC, with his knockout win over the "Rock" perhaps being his best performance yet. If he can outstrike Sakara at the end of August, the 38-year old would likely find himself fighting with the big boys of the UFC middleweight division.

Georges St. Pierre: 'I learn something every time I watch Anderson Silva fight'

"I watched that fight because I like Anderson Silva and the way he fights, I learn every time that Anderson Silva fights. I like to watch the best guys in the business fighting because I learn from them and Anderson Silva is one of them. Chael Sonnen now became one of them. But no... it [a fight with Silva] is not on my radar right now."

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 coach and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre had a quick Q&A with Fighter Only in which he reasserted his admiration for Anderson Silva and even admitted that learns new tricks watching Silva's fights. GSP also noted that a fight with Anderson is not "on his radar right now." Will "The Rush" and "The Spider" ever meet inside the Octagon? After what Chael Sonnen accomplished against Silva, do you now believe more in Georges chances?

UFC Quick Quote: Marcus Davis has no doubt he's a better boxer than Nate Diaz

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 08:51 AM PDT

Marcus-davis-666074653_medium

"He's similar to me as far as what he uses in his arsenal. I think that what Diaz does for his boxing, being long, throwing out his lead left hand a lot, he has some good things that he does. But I have more tools. I have better footwork. He moves forwards and backwards. I move side to side. I'm good at closing the gap quickly and getting my shots off and getting back out. I think that I'm the more powerful puncher. I don't think there is any question about that. I hit guys with one shot and they go out. As far as boxing skill goes, I think I have the advantage there."

Surely one of the contenders for "Fight of the Night" honors at UFC 118 this coming weekend in Boston, Marcus Davis vs. Nate Diaz, is almost guaranteed to feature a stand up battle to behold. In speaking to Heavy.com, "The Irish Hand Grendade" detailed where he thinks he holds an advantage over Nate. Davis believes he is the clear cut better boxer considering his power and footwork. Don't know if there's much of an argument there as Diaz relies on his quantity of punches more than looking for that one shot knockout. If the fight does stay standing, who takes this fight? Time for some predictions, Maniacs.

Confusion over oxygen cans at Strikeforce: 'Houston'

Quoteworhty:

"The [use of oxygen] cans were actually brought to my attention this morning by one of our guys. I didn't see anything, but I had heard they were taking canned oxygen. But right now I just don't have enough information and I don't want to comment until I find out what it was. But from what I hear everything they did was approved by the commission so we'll have a conversation with them."

The above picture just looks suspicious, doesn't it? If you didn't catch both "King" Mo and K.J. Noons using canned oxygen directly before their fights at Strikeforce: Houston, don't feel bad, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker last night told MMA Nation he didn't either. For those who did notice, including Middle Easy which went into great detail about just how preposterous it really was, you were likely wondering how this was allowed. In theory, the usage of canned oxygen would obviously be a great benefit, seemingly increasing one's cardio and stamina, a huge part of the fight game. It didn't exactly help Lawal, but that's neither here nor there. Using such substances is also very clearly disallowed under the established rules for every state's athletic commission, including Texas. Anyone else find it a bit odd that not one Strikeforce employee or member of Texas' commission was curious that fighters were using this completely foreign substance? What should Scott Coker, or anybody else in a position of authority for that matter do about this?

Vitor Belfort to return in November, hopes for title shot in 2011

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 06:46 AM PDT

Ufc103_vitorbelfort_richfranklin_medium

The news comes straight from the horse's mouth, err, Twitter:

"This year I am not going to fight for the title because the champion is hurt but November we will be in action for sure that is what I can say."

With the UFC middleweight title picture up in the air due Anderson Silva's cracked rib which is keeping "The Spider" out of action until 2011, Vitor Belfort has made it clear that he doesn't intend to wait.

"The Phenom" has been on the sideline for more than a year himself due to injury after he was forced to pull out of his UFC 112 title bout with the aforementioned Silva.

So, who should Mr. Belfort face in his Octagon return? Does a fight with Chael Sonnen create any interest? Maybe a battle with Yushin Okami with the winner receiving the next shot at middleweight gold. Time to play matchmaker.
