Anderson Silva: 'I have no desire to fight at 205' (Video)

Any "must-see" match-ups at 205? Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones -- or too soon? And is he looking past Chael Sonnen?

UFC 118: Demian Maia vs Mario Miranda set for main card in Boston

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 12:58 PM PDT

Mma_e_maia_576_medium

That didn't take long.

A few days after having his Ultimate Fight Night 22 main event opponent, Alan Belcher, pull out of the contest due to an eye injury, Demian Maia has a new adversary as well as a new date for his next bout.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist will take on Mario Miranda at UFC 118 on August 28 in Boston, Massachusetts. MMAmania.com learned of the match up earlier today.

Maia (12-2) has been to the mountaintop but the Sherpa sent him sent tumbling back down it after a five round fiasco at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. The loss to Anderson Silva was his second in three fights after stringing together ten straight wins.

He is undoubtedly one of the sport's most gifted grapplers, but his striking has yet to evolve to a higher level. To his credit, he showed a marked improvement in a unanimous decision win against Dan Miller at UFC 109.

Mario Miranda was last seen sending David Loiseau on his way from the UFC, yet again, after his UFC 115 victory as he defeated "The Crow" via TKO in the second round.

The 10-1 Brazilian middleweight lost his Octagon debut to Gerald Harris at UFC Fight Night 21 back in March. Prior to joining the UFC, Miranda cut his teeth on the regional circuit, with notable wins over Joe Vedepo and Ricky Story.

UFC Quick Quote: Chael Sonnen says Lance Armstrong gave himself cancer

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 12:32 PM PDT

Lance_armstrong_medium

"When you screw up, you have to own it. That stuff really gets under my skin. Take Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong did a number of things and he gave himself cancer. He cheated, he did drugs, and he gave himself cancer. Well, instead of saying ‘Hey listen, I cheated and gave myself cancer, don't be like me.' He actually made himself the victim and then went out and profited something like $15 million dollars from this ‘Hey, poor me, let's find a cure for cancer' campaign instead of just coming clean and saying, ‘Look, here's what I did, I screwed myself up, and I hope people learn from my mistakes.' You just watch these guys and can't help but think, God, what a fraud. You got the whole Michael Phelps being a pothead thing too. I'm just glad I'm in the business I'm in so I can get them in the cage and kick the crap out of them."

Well, I guess this qualifies as an unexpected twist. Chael Sonnen has turned his focus away from Anderson Silva and onto Lance Armstrong. Yes, the guy who rides bicycles. When asked by Larry Pepe on Pro MMA Radio what really bothers Sonnnen, Chael all of a sudden went on this rant about the seven-time Tour de France victor. The number one middleweight contender alleges that Lance actually gave himself cancer by blood-doping and taking performance enhancing drugs. Once again, Mr. Sonnen didn't let a little thing like facts get in the way of spewing hot air. A quick Lance Armstrong search on Google reveals that the cyclist was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996, but won his first Tour de France while first being accused of using PED's in 1999. I'm surely not one to nitpick on facts when it comes to pre-fight trash talk, but in this case, the Oregon native has gone a little overboard. Where do you come out on this -- Are there any cycling fans, or virtually anybody else for that matter, who find this disturbing/irritating?

Josh Koscheck: 'If Georges doesn't take me seriously, he's going to sleep'

Quoteworthy:

"I saw some weaknesses in him and I definitely plan to use that against him. I think he knows he has his hands full with me. Well, I don't know, maybe he doesn't. Maybe he doesn't believe I'm a better fighter than I was in 2007 and if he doesn't, it's his mistake. If he feels that way, I know he's going to wake up after getting knocked out and say to himself, ‘Oh [expletive], I should have taken him seriously.' I'm confident and I believe in myself and I believe I'm going to win and Georges knows that now. How people wind up perceiving that, frankly, I don't care. I think this is a good season [of TUF] and people will enjoy it, but I'm all about winning. If the fans like me, great, but that's not my goal in this. My goal is to get that belt and that's what this is all about."

Anybody else feel like we have an overload of pre-fight trash talk right now? With Chael Sonnen and James Toney putting in work, there is virtually no room left for verbal warfare from anybody else. But, we have to just gotta dig deep, fight through it, and welcome Josh Koscheck aboard. The latest missile fired out of Josh's mouth is a warning to GSP stating that if the welterweight kingpin isn't taking him seriously, he's gonna be taking a nice knockout-induced nap come December 11. So, I ask you what is more likely... St. Pierre overlooking "Kos," or the TUF 1 veteran shutting the champ's lights off?

Bellator 25: Dan Hornbuckle vs Brad Blackburn set for August 19 in Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. (August 03, 2010) - Bellator Season 2 Welterweight Tournament runner-up Dan Hornbuckle will look to return to his winning ways following a June defeat suffered in the tournament championship when he faces off against the hard-hitting UFC veteran "Bad" Brad Blackburn at the historic Chicago Theatre on Aug. 19th as a special feature fight at Bellator 25.

Known for highlight reel knockouts and spectacular submissions, Hornbuckle (21-3-0) has handled 10 of his previous victims via KO or TKO, while finishing another 10 with his impressive ground game. The proud Native American cruised through the quarter and semifinal rounds of the Bellator Season 2 Welterweight Tournament with a pair of vicious first round submissions before eventually falling to former US Olympic wrestler Ben Askren in the finals.

With his last several fights being finished on the canvas in one form or another, Hornbuckle is eager to test himself against the experienced and dangerous veteran with an established reputation as a fellow knockout artist.

"Bad Brad is a really tough opponent and it's going to be a good start to my win-streak," said Hornbuckle. "Brad's skill sets are going to complement mine and I'll finally be able to unleash the The Handler's stand-up without any wrestling tackles involved."

With 26 fights spanning over a 9-year career, including notable stints in the IFL as well as the UFC, Blackburn (15-11-1) has compiled a number of impressive victories that include knockout stoppages of Pat Healy and Jay Hieron, along with notable wins over Ryo Chonan and Edgar Garcia. The Seattle native, who started training in boxing in his early 20s before quickly changing to MMA, says he is unafraid of Hornbuckle's notoriously devastating stand-up game.

"Hornbuckle is a top-level fighter with a great record.  I'm excited to fight him, but I'm not scared of anyone's striking in MMA," said Blackburn. "I've been around for a long time, wherever this fight goes, I'll be comfortable.  If he wants to stand and bang, let's do it."

"I'm thrilled that we are able to add another world class fight to an already stacked card," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Dan Hornbuckle is as hungry and dangerous as ever before and the same can be said for "Bad" Brad Blackburn. As an MMA fan I cannot wait to see this fight."

Hornbuckle vs. Blackburn joins a talent-filled Fox Sports Net event that features undefeated heavyweight sensation Damian "The Polish Pitbull" Grabowski making his US debut in World Championship Heavyweight Tournament action against ground-and-pound specialist Scott Barrett.  Undefeated Division I NCAA Wrestling Champion Cole Konrad takes on Spanish submission specialist Rogent Lloret in another heavyweight tournament showdown.

Additionally, Zoila "Warrior Princess" Frausto takes on the world's No. 6-ranked flyweight, undefeated Jessica Pene in an electrifying opening-round fight in Bellator's World Championship Women's Tournament, and much more.

For more information, visit Bellator.com, follow Bellator on Twitter @BellatorMMA or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Bellator.

Tickets for the event are priced at $100, $75, $50, and $35, and are on sale NOW at www.Ticketmaster.com.

UFC on Versus 2 averages 991,000 viewers for August 1 event

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 10:46 AM PDT

Ufc-on-versus-2-poster_medium

Maybe what people say about sequels not being as good as the original is true.

The UFC's second event on the Versus network this past Sunday night, August 1, was viewed by an average of 991,000 fight fans with a .86 HH rating according to MMA Payout. In comparison, the UFC's debut on Versus back in March earned a 1.1 HH rating with 1.24 million viewers, a decrease of over 20%.

UFC on Versus 2 was a card that fell somewhere in between the usual Ultimate Fight Night events and pay-per-view shows in terms of quality. The last UFN card which saw Kenny Florian easily dispose of Takanori Gomi averaged 1.6 million viewers on Spike TV, but it is impornat to note that Spike TV is available in approximately 25 million more homes.

In a more apples to apples comparison that paints these numbers in a positive light, WEC events that regularly air on Versus draw on average just a few hundred thousand viewers. While the UFC brand does not accompany those shows, the product is at least available to the same amount of prospective fans.

It's too bad more people didn't tune in to see Jon Jones continue his ascension to the top of the 205-pound division as he had a harder time finishing his breakfast the morning of the fight than he did his actual opponent, Vladimir Matyushenko. A star was indeed born.

UFC 117: Chael Sonnen drills for Aug. 7 'Spider' fight (Video)

UFC Quick Quote: Is Michael Bisping 'two wins away' from a title shot?

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 08:02 AM PDT

Michael-bisping-627750234_medium

"If Chael Sonnen comes into the octagon in the right frame of mind, he will give Silva problems. But I can see Silva winning this by submission, because when Sonnen fought Nate Marquardt he was dominant on top, but left himself open at times. I’ll be watching the fight closely, because I believe I am two wins away from fighting for that belt. I think I have seen chinks in [Akiyama's] armor. I’m going to come in very strong, very fit, and I’m going to exploit him by setting a fast pace."

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 champion Michael Bisping tells the Daily Star that he intends to vault himself into the middleweight title hunt with a big win over International star Yoshihiro Akiyama. "The Count" rebounded from a unanimous decision loss to Wanderlei Silva "Down Under" back on February 20 to outwork the venerable Dan Miller and take all three judge's scorecards at UFC 114 last May. Bisping is 3-2 in his last five fights with losses to Silva and Dan Henderson. In addition to Miller, the Brit also stopped Denis Kang at UFC 105 and decisioned Chris Leben way back at UFC 89. Is he "two wins away" from a title shot? Or do we reserve judgment for after the "Sexyama" fight?

Ustream.tv coughs up UFC pirate IP's; adds new copyright protection system

Looks like some of the UFC pay-per-view pirates may be walking the plank sooner rather than later.

Ustream.tv recently complied with a subpoena issued on behalf of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) requesting the IP addresses of users illegally broadcasting pay-per-view events through the live streaming site, NewTeeVee confirms.

"Ustream was subpoenaed by UFC via Zuffa earlier this year to provide identifiable information on certain broadcasters, which Ustream fully complied with in a timely manner. Ustream continues to work cohesively with our premium content partners to prevent piracy, including UFC to legally stream officially-sanctioned UFC events.”

Not coincidentally, the Ustream gang has also added a new copyright protection system to help deter future content crooks from trying to cheat the world's largest fight promotion.

Justin.tv, also named in the Zuffa copyright subpoena, has yet to respond.

Matt Hughes: Ricardo Almeida will come at me hard -- he wants to be on top of me

Quoteworthy:

"I think Ricardo will be hungry for this fight, I’ve beaten two Gracies and a teammate and, back about ten years ago, I beat Ricardo himself in a grappling match in Abu Dhabi. So on one hand he’s got a lot of motivation and on the other he sees what I just listed and knows I’m a threat. I think he will come at me hard and try to get me down to the ground somehow. He wants to be on top of me, but I’m sure if he’s on the ground he’ll be happier than on his feet."

Flinty farmboy and former welterweight champion Matt Hughes anticipates a stiff test from grappling guru Ricardo Almeida when the two rivals come together at UFC 117 on Aug. 7 in Oakland. Hughes has a few Gracies under his belt and wants to add one of their prized students to his list of conquests. Can he break the "Big Dog" this Saturday night at the Oracle Arena?

UFC Fight Night 22: Nate Marquardt vs Rousimar Palhares moved to Sept. 15 main event with Alan Belcher hurt

Posted: 03 Aug 2010 05:43 AM PDT

Marquardt-palhares_medium

Top ranked middleweight contender Nate Marquardt (29-9-2) will be facing muscular submission master Rousimar Palhares (11-2) -- albeit a little later than expected -- now that the promotion has booked them to headline UFC Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15.

Originally scheduled for UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2" on Aug. 28 in Boston, the 185-pound contest will now replace the Fight Night 22 main event between Alan Belcher and Demian Maia after "The Talent" was forced off the card due to injury.

Sources close to one of the fight camps alerted MMAmania.com to the unexpected change late last night.

"The Great" is coming off a "Relentless" beat down at the hands of now number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 back in February. Many people pegged the fight as an easy win for Marquardt, but Mr. Sonnen showed us all yet again what good 'ole American wrestling can do for you in this sport.

Prior to the Sonnen defeat, Nate had won three consecutive fights inside the Octagon, including a 21-second dismantling of Demian Maia at UFC 102. That win propelled Marquardt back to the top of the division, but another title shot was just not meant to be at the moment.

Palhares is coming off a controversial submission win over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111 back on March 27, failing to break the heel hook submission he applied in the first round in a timely fashion. The "Gorilla" tapped to no avail and referee Kevin Mulhall had to physically intervene upon calling the fight.

"Toquinho" later apologized for the hiccup, insisting there was no harm intended, but the NJSACB wasn't impressed with his post-fight apology and slapped him with a 90-day suspension.

He'll now look to redeem himself against perhaps his stiffest test to date (sans Dan Henderson) later this summer.
