WEC 50 results recap from last night for 'Cruz vs Benavidez'

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 10:13 PM PDT

Wec33recap_medium

WEC 50: "Cruz vs. Benavidez" is in the books from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and once again the UFC's sister promotion came through with another fantastic night of fights.

In the featured bout of the night, bantamweight world champion Dominick Cruz kept his title reign in tact by out-pointing top contender Joseph Benavidez with a razor close split decision in a rematch from a great co-main event fight at WEC 42 last summer.

Takedowns were the difference for Cruz in the first fight, and they were huge once again tonight as the champion capped off each round by putting Benavidez on his back and flurrying with punches.

The challenger did a good job of counter punching on his feet, but he was denied every time he shot in for a takedown of his own. Cruz was too strong and his wrestling was too good throughout the fight. Had Benavidez been able to avoid being put on his back in the final seconds of each round, he may have done enough damage on his feet to win the fight.

That wasn't the case, though, and Dominick Cruz was able to beat him with virtually the same exact gameplan that he used twelve months ago.

In Benavidez's defense, he gave up a lot of size in the fight and appears to be more suited for the flyweight division. If the promotion ever does decide to finally unveil the 125 pound class, Benavidez will surely be right at the top of the list of contenders for that title, so perhaps his championship hopes aren't completely lost with this fight.

For Cruz, the next challenger for his belt was also decided on the card when Scott Jorgensen came out on top in a hard fought three round decision over Brad Pickett.

The two lightweights put on a fantastic show for the Las Vegas fans with a back and forth fifteen minute war in their main card encounter. If not for the main event, these two may have taken home fight of the night bonus money. They still may anyway. It was that good of a fight.

There were plenty of dramatic exchanges on the feet, with Pickett winning the majority of them. But in the end takedowns were the difference in this fight as well, as Jorgensen was able to score on sporadic single and double leg shots throughout the fight.

The win marks five in a row for "Young Guns" and seven overall inside the WEC cage. Get ready for WEC ??: "Cruz vs. Jorgensen."

The co-headliner provided an excellent wrestler vs. striker match up between Anthony Pettis and Shane Roller. And with future title fight implications also potentially on the line in this fight, both men left everything they had in the cage.

It was clear right from the start that Roller's intentions were to negate Pettis' dangerous striking game by putting him on his back early and often. The only problem with that strategy was that Pettis wasn't all that willing to play along.

It took a few minutes for him to get comfortable in the fight, but once Pettis was able to fend off a couple of takedowns, he started getting into a groove and letting his strikes go. That was the beginning of the end for Roller, who was unable to execute his gameplan and wound up being forced to trade strikes way more than he wanted to coming into the fight.

The most surprising thing, however, was Pettis' ability to score takedowns of his own during the fight. And even more so, his ability to hold dominant positions and fight his way out of others on the ground against the world class wrestler.

He appeared to be headed towards a one-sided decision, but Roller's late aggression ended up providing an opportunity for Pettis to put him away with a triangle choke with less than 10 seconds remaining in the fight.

It was a super-impressive win over perhaps his toughest opponent to date, and afterward Pettis made it clear to the reigning division kingpin Ben Henderson, who was sitting cageside, that he wants his shot.

Hendeson responded by saying, "I see you, Anthony. I see you."

Undefeated Team Alpha Male product Chad Mendes pushed his win total to eight tonight with a three round blanketing win over a very tough Cub Swanson in their featherweight bout.

Swanson couldn't stop the decorated collegiate wrestler from Cal Polytech from taking him down at will, and when it came time for the judges to turn in their score totals, that was surely the deciding factor.

Bart Palaszewski showed the value of experience in mixed martial arts tonight with a dominating win over young, up and coming prospect Zach Micklewright.

Palaszewski admitted afterward that he trained a lot of wrestling for this fight and came in with a gameplan that involved taking Micklewright out of his comfort zone on his feet and onto the mat. However, that gameplan went out the window when the former IFL standout started landing at will with his counter striking.

After eating several hard shots Micklewright was finally put away with a series of punches early on in the second round.

That's a wrap from "Sin City." To check out the complete results and our blow-by-blow coverage of "Cruz vs. Benavidez" click here.

WEC 51: "Aldo vs. Gamburyan" is up next for the promotion on September 30 from the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado where featherweight kingpin Jose "Junior" Aldo will defend his title against UFC and TUF veteran Manny "The Pitbull" Gamburyan.

Former WEC champions Miguel "Angel" Torres, Jaime "C-4" Varner and Mike Thomas Brown are also slated for the blockbuster card, as well as Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia, and others.

WEC Quick Quote: Chad Mendes has a 'great' gameplan to overcome the 'tough' Cub Swanson

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 11:43 AM PDT

Mendes20wins11_medium

"He's a tough fighter, he's confident with his stand-up. To me it seems like the more you just kind of stand in front of him and let him get confident and comfortable, the better he is.He's also got a great guillotine choke but we've put together a great gameplan for Cub that I think is going to be awesome for this fight. Both stand-up and ground is tough with Cub so this gameplan should work great."

WEC featherweight prospect Chad Mendes puts his undefeated streak on the line against Cub Swanson at tonight's (Aug. 18) WEC 50 event from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Mendes recognizes the challenge his opponent brings but tells "Crazy" Larry Pepe on Pro MMA Radio that a "great" gameplan can overcome "great" skills. Will the Team Alpha Male product get one step closer to the 145-pound belt? Or is Swanson going to send him to the back of the line? Predictions please.

UFC 122: Amir Sadollah vs Peter Sobotta in the works for Nov. 13

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 10:44 AM PDT

Sadollah-sobotta_medium

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 winner Amir Sadollah will return to the Spike TV airwaves when he travels abroad to face Peter Sobotta at UFC 122 on Nov. 13 from the Konig Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany, according to GroundandPound.de.

Sadollah (3-2) saw his two-fight winning streak come to an end at UFC 114: "Rampage vs. Evans" back in May courtesy of a lopsided beatdown at the hands of Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim.

Prior to the loss, the part-time TV personality took convincing decision wins over mixed martial arts veterans Brad Blackburn (UFC Fight Night 20) and Phil Baroni (UFC 106).

A win over Sobotta in front of the German's hometown crowd could get Sadollah right back into the welterweight mix.

Sobotta (8-3) is making his third -- and perhaps final -- appearance under the Zuffa banner. Despite a promising career on Germany's regional circuit, the Balingen native has yet to find a win in two appearances inside the Octagon.

After dropping a unanimous decision to Paul Taylor at UFC 99: "The Comeback" in June 2009, Sobotta was outworked by James Wilks at UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin" earlier this year in Vancouver.

UFC 122 is expected to feature a bevy of German born fighters though no official match-ups have been announced at this time. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this still developing fight card.

Poll: Has Shane Carwin escaped the Lesnar lynch mob?

Shane_carwin_medium

Shane Carwin has been named in open court by a federal prosecutor as a purchaser of illegal steroids. As of now, there is little we can argue for (or against) the UFC heavyweight as he has yet to make an official statement.

In addition, the MMA media has been surprisingly low-key in regards to its handling of this recent news. Is Shane Carwin receiving special treatment?

Would oft-maligned heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem receive the same unspoken pardon? Or would the MMA media have stormed their castles and hung them in the town square?

Poll
If Brock Lesnar or Alistair Overeem had been named in open court as a purchaser of illegal steroids (and not Shane Carwin), the reaction would be:

Thiago Alves: I can see clearly now, nothing's holding me back

Props: MMA Fighting

Quoteworthy:

"I had a chance to look back at the situation. I know I have things to correct ... It was just a half-pound, so I'm sure my body could have flushed it out. But I didn't want to. I just wanted to concentrate on the fight. It was just easier for me to give up the money. Yes, we fight for money, but you also fight to win, and at the time, I was thinking I didn't want to cut the weight. I was just focused on getting ready to fight. When you're cutting weight and dehydrated, you don't always think right. In the future, that won't happen again. It can't happen again ... I appreciate the support I've gotten. When things like this happen, you see people's true colors. I don't care about the people who've turned their backs on me. I just focus on the ones who appreciate me. That's what's important to me and I won't let them down. I'm going to take this thing to the next level. I'm going to make it happen. I know what I've been through and I see things clearly now. Nothing's holding me back."

Former UFC welterweight number one contender Thiago Alves is ready to put his weight cutting issues behind him after coming in slightly over the limit for 170-pound scrap with Jon Fitch at the UFC 117 event on Aug. 7 in Oakland, California. "Pitbull" insists he belongs at welterweight, but has had a difficult time proving it. Even promotion president Dana White is pushing for a move to middleweight. Has the Brazilian put his demons behind him? And can he recover from back-to-back losses and get back into the division title hunt?

On Friday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. ET, Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) world champion Penny Thomas, fresh off her "Superfight" victory over Shayna Baszler at the UFC Fan Expo "Las Vegas" back in May, takes on Team Lloyd Irvin product Tracey Goodell.

Also on tap for the Friday afternoon session is a match-up between UFC veteran and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Hermes Franca and 23-time Grapplers Quest champion Ryan Hall.

UFC 123: Rory MacDonald vs Matt Brown on tap for Nov. 20

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 07:43 AM PDT

Macdonald-brown_medium

There's a fantastic welterweight match-up brewing for the upcoming UFC 123 event, as Showdown Joe Ferraro brings word that Rory MacDonald and Matt Brown are likely to hook 'em up on Nov. 20.

No venue has been made official at this time.

MacDonald (10-1) saw his undefeated streak snapped at UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin" back on June 12 in Vancouver. "The Waterboy" looked to be having his way with division standout Carlos Condit until "The Natural Born Killer" overcame adversity and secured a TKO stoppage late in the final frame.

It was his first defeat as a professional fighter and just his second appearance inside the Octagon. Prior to submitting Mike "Joker" Guymon in his UFC debut, MacDonald ran roughshod over the competition in King of the Cage (KOTC).

Like the Canadian, Brown (11-9) is hoping to rebound from a recent defeat. "The Immortal" was unable to escape the crafty submission game of Chris Lytle, who secured the tap on the former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 contestant at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" back in July.

It was Brown's second straight submission loss since stringing together three consecutive wins. Despite his ability to entertain fans with his balls-to-the-wall style, there has to be some sense of urgency in the Brown camp based on the promotion's unfavorable treatment of fighters who drop three straight fights.

UFC 123 is expected to be headlined by a main event pitting former light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson against fellow ex-champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this still-developing fight card.
