WEC 50 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Cruz vs Benavidez'

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for those who competed at the WEC 50: "Cruz vs Benavidez" event which took place on Aug. 18 from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

As expected, main event competitors and bantamweight brawlers Dominick Cruz and Joseph Benavidez will spend a few weeks on the sidelines after five full rounds of kicking the crap out of each other.

Also getting a mandatory vacation is 135-pound contender Scott Jorgensen, who needs a few black & whites of his left paw before the commission gives him the green light to compete.

Other notable suspensions are Shane Roller (left knee), Bart Palaszewski (right knee) and Danny Castillo (right wrist).

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of WEC 50 injuries and their medical instructions:

Dominick Cruz: No contest until 02/15/11 pending right hand X-ray.

Joseph Benavidez: Suspended until 10/03/10 with no contact until 09/18/10.

Shane Roller: No contest until 02/15/11 pending left knee X-ray.

Anthony Pettis: Suspended until 09/18/10 with no contact until 09/09/10.

Scott Jorgensen: No contest until 09/18/10 with no contact until 09/09/10. Additional suspension until 02/15/11 pending left hand X-Ray.

Brad Pickett: Suspended until 09/18/10 with no contact until 09/09/10.

Zach Micklewright: Suspended until 10/03/10 with no contact until 09/18/10.

Bart Palaszewski: No contest until 02/15/11 pending right knee X-ray.

Anthony Njokuani: Suspended until 10/03/10 with no contact until 09/18/10.

Javier Vazquez: Suspended until 09/18/10 with no contact until 09/09/10.

David Jansen: Suspended until 10/03/10 with no contact until 09/18/10.

Danny Castillo: No contest until 09/18/10 with no contact until 09/09/10. Additional suspension until 02/15/11 pending right wrist X-Ray.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Strikeforce preview and quick picks for 'Houston' on Aug. 21

Houston-banner_medium

Strikeforce is ready to blow the roof off the Toyota Center as it invades "Houston" for its latest Showtime offering scheduled for this Saturday (August 21) at 10 p.m. ET.

Strikeforce "Houston" will feature a light heavyweight title fight between current 205-pound champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal and hard-hitting Brazilian contender Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante in the main event of the evening.

Also battling for gold will be Tim Kennedy and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in a bid to claim the promotion's vacant middleweight title.

MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of Strikeforce: "Houston," beginning with the Showtime telecast at 10 p.m. ET. In addition, we will deliver up-to-the-minute quick results of all the under card action much earlier on fight night.

To help get you better prepared for the festivities I've given some analysis and predictions for the main card below.

Check it out:

205 lbs.: Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal vs. Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante

Can "Feijao" stop "King Mo" from taking him down?

If he can, he'll have a great shot at capturing the title, because his striking is good enough to beat the champ. But that's an enormous if. Nobody has been able to stop the wrestling attack of "King Mo" since he started fighting professionally a little less than two years ago.

Two years and this guy is already a Strikeforce world champion. That speaks volumes about his drive and talent level. He hasn't been fighting bums either. Travis Wiuff, Mousasi, Mike Whitehead, Mark Kerr: These are all experienced mixed martial artists with credible resumes, and with the exception of Mousasi, Mo beat all of them inside the first round.

"Feijao's" no bum either. He's been very impressive with TKO wins over two very tough opponents (Antwain Britt and Aaron Rosa) since the setback to Kyle. You can be sure that he'll come into this fight well prepared with a solid gameplan, but I just can't see him being able to keep Mo off the top of him, regardless of how much he's been training takedown defense for this fight.

And once Mo's on top of him, I have serious doubts that "Feijao" can defend his ground and pound for five rounds like Mousasi was able to. I just don't trust his ability to withstand punishment. I know he's a black belt in jiu jitsu, but I still think it's bad news for him if he's fighting off his back.

My money is on "King Mo."

Final prediction: Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal via technical knockout

185 lbs.: Tim Kennedy vs. Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza

I'm taking the Brazilian. I've seen him fight and win against guys that are very similar to Kennedy, mainly Jason Miller. He knows what Kennedy has to offer, and he knows what it's going to take to deal with him.

Kennedy, on the other hand, has never faced a guy like "Jacare," who is dangerous in every aspect of the fight. He's better on his feet and his jiu jitsu is on another level. And while Kennedy usually relies on his strength, "Jacare" is a freakishly strong guy, too, and can match him in that area. Souza simply has more weapons and more ways to win.

He did appear to wear down in his last fight against Joey Villasenor, and that is something that Kennedy can certainly look to exploit. I can definitely envision a scenario where Kennedy gets a late TKO from ground and pound or something like that, but in all likelihood, "Jacare" is going to have his cardio tightened up and he's going to be too technical to be overpowered.

But, the longer the fight goes, the more I like Kennedy's chances to pull something off. The truth is, though, we haven't really seen his cardio get tested all that much yet either. He's only gone to the scorecards twice in fourteen fights.

Like I said, there are just more ways for "Jacare" to win, so I'm going with him. Kennedy has been one of the most impressive fighters on the Strikeforce roster over the last year, but I think he's going to come up a little bit short in this one.

Final prediction: "Jacare" Souza via unanimous decision

155 lbs.: Karl "KJ" Noons vs. Jorge Gurgel

Gurgel would be smart to try and get this fight to the ground if possible, but I think we all know that's not likely to happen. For one thing, Noons' takedown defense is fantastic. And for another, Gurgel usually elects to stand and trade, anyway, despite being a highly respected black belt in jiu jitsu.

That doesn't seem like the greatest of gameplans to bring into a fight against KJ, but that's what we've come to expect from a Jorge Gurgel fight. Like I said, though, I don't think it's smart, at all.

Noons is a high level striker with great boxing, solid kicks and knockout power from everywhere. I know Conor Huen had a fair amount of success in the stand up against him, but nobody really expected Huen to come out firing like that. He knows he has to be prepared to bang with Gurgel, and I think we'll see a much better KJ Noons because of that.

Counter punching will be big for Noons in this fight. I can definitely see him being the first one to stop Jorge with strikes. If not though, he'll take the decision. There's a lot on the line for both guys, so expect a barn burner either way.

Final prediction: KJ Noons via unanimous decision

265 lbs.: Bobby "Dominator" Lashley vs. Chad "The Grave Digger" Griggs

Griggs has been doing his best Chael Sonnen impersonation leading up to this fight. Okay, maybe not to that extent, but still, he's done a decent job of hyping up a fight that at first glance appeared to be nothing more than another walk in the park for Lashley.

Still, I'm having a hard time buying what he's selling.

He's been out of action for over 15 months, and the last two opponents he's faced have a combined record of 1-2. He trains with a good camp at APEX, but that's still a long time to go without really being tested in a fight, especially when you're about to face a physically imposing wrestler like Lashley.

I see Lashley winning this fight by submission in one of the first two rounds. He's been training hard with the American Top Team crew for a while now, and I have to believe that his submission game has taken a big step forward during that time.

Griggs will give up a decent amount of weight on fight night, and I don't think he'll be able to deal with "The Dominator" once they lock up.

Final prediction: Bobby Lashley via submission

That's a wrap. Sound off with your predictions in the comments section below.

Strikeforce: Will Jiu-Jitsu be the difference for Rafael 'Feijao' on Saturday night in Houston?

If he can't stop "King Mo's" takedowns it may be the only chance he has ...

"I’ve trained so hard. I saw Mo’s last fight and I know he’s good at everything, well rounded. I knew I had to train for everything for Mo. I think there will be a lot of surprises in this fight. I think Mo has a lot of things to show on Saturday, but so do I. I’m trained in Jiu-Jitsu. A lot of people think I’m a striker, but I just haven’t had a chance to show (my Jiu-Jitsu skills) yet. I’m comfortable in both: standing up or on the ground. I’ve stood up a lot with my opponents, but I just try to do what’s best for me in there. I just try to win the fight."

Rafael Cavalcante talks to media at the Strikeforce: "Houston" pre-fight press conference about preparing for his light heavyweight title fight against Muhammed Lawal on Aug. 21 on Showtime. "Feijao" is known for his raw punching power but also contends that he's just as comfortable on the ground -- which is where he may spend a majority of the fight against one of the sport's best wrestler's. Anyone think the Brazilian can get it done?

UFC Fight Night 22: Charles Oliveira vs Efrain Escudero booked with Matt Wiman hurt

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 07:16 AM PDT

No, seriously.

The fight card for the upcoming UFC Fight Night 22 event continues to get shelled, as talent marches off the injury cliff en masse like a horde of jacked-up lemmings. This time it's Matt Wiman, who was apparently too "Handsome" for his own arm and withdrew from the card with a snap, crackle and pop.

Stepping in for the former TUF guy is promotion sophomore Charles Oliveira, according to MMA Weekly, who will now face Efrain Escudero in the night's co-main event. "Hecho en Mexico" was a late replacement for Mac Danzig, who suffered injuries of his own and dropped out of the contest earlier this week.

Oliveira was impressive in his Octagon debut, submitting Darren Elkins via armbar at UFC on Versus 2 earlier this month. "Do Bronx" is perfect through 13 fights, and has finished all but one of his victims.

The Brazilian now gets a major step up in competition against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 champion in Escudero.

The Tempe native was originally pegged to battle John Gunderson on the preliminary card, but was promoted to the co-main event when Danzig went AWOL. Now he shifts gears once again and will have to keep his submission defense in check come Sept. 15.

After steamrolling his way to 12 straight wins, Escudero was derailed by Evan Dunham in the third round of their UFC Fight Night 20 scrap earlier this year. The painful submission (armbar) sent him back to the drawing board, but not for long.

Escudero rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Dan Lauzon at UFC 114: "Rampage vs. Evans" on May 29 and could get himself right back into the title hunt with a big win over one of the division's top prospects.

UFC Quick Quote: Keep the 'fake' belt and the 'fake' accolades -- BJ Penn just wants to win 'real' fights

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 08:27 PM PDT

Penn-scream_medium

"Frankie actually did some things that impressed me actually and actually that I started adding to my game. I liked how he didn’t hold on to the take downs too much and just kind of broke away. And I like how he did some different things and no matter who you are in the ring with they’re always teaching you and you’re always constantly learning ... You know, maybe people (say this) about me, but, you know, as far as wanting to go out there and prove that Frankie Edgar can't beat me and get my belt back, you know, there is no lack of motivation for this fight ... I want to prove to the world, I want to prove to Frankie, I want to prove to Frankie's corner, I want to prove to my corner, I want to prove to everybody, you know, who the best fighter is in the world, who's got the most tools, and who can execute better ... No one is untouchable. And if they are, they just haven't run into the right guy. When you hear people say you're the greatest lightweight of all time and this and that and this and that, it's bullshit. It's not real. It's fake. You know, being the champ is fake, all of that is all fake. You just go out there, you've got to keep training, keeping training as hard as you can and keep winning fights. The only thing that's real is the fight. Everything else is fake."

Former UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn talks to the media at the UFC 118: "Edgar vs Penn 2" conference call (via PennyJoMMA) about his upcoming rematch against Frankie Edgar on Aug. 28 in Boston. "The Prodigy" coughed up his 155-pound title last March, when he couldn't find an "Answer" for his opponent's stick-and-move offense. The Hawaiian seems less concerned about holding titles or being considered the greatest of all time than he is winning fights. Is he downplaying the significance of the lightweight championship because he no longer has it? Or has he slowly transitioned into a different type of fighter, the warrior spirit who just wants to fight for the sake of fighting?
