UFC 117 bonuses and awards for 'Silva vs Sonnen' PPV fights

UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card, and it's probably no surprise who's leaving "Oaktown" with second sack of simoleons.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded middleweight competitors Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen "Fight of the Night" for their four-and-a-half rounds of action that saw "The Spider" endure a 20-minute ass kicking only to pull off a miraculous fifth round submission to steal the win.

And the choke that had Sonnen crying "uncle" was good enough to net the Brazilian a second bonus as his triangle qualified him for "Submission of the Night."

Also tapping his way to the bank was former welterweight champion Matt Hughes, who had Ricardo Almeida counting sheep just three minutes into the opening stanza. The captain of the H.I.T. Squad put the Gracie disciple on his keister with a left hook and followed it up with an unholy union of arm and neck.

Cha-ching.

In preliminary action, Stefan Struve got back to his winning ways with a bone-crunching knockout of Christian Morecraft that invested an additional sixty-grand into the "Skyscraper."

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 117:

Fight of the Night — Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen
Submission of the Night — Anderson Silva and Matt Hughes
Knockout of the Night — Stefan Struve

Again, each fighter received $60,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

UFC 117 results recap from last night for 'Silva vs Sonnen'

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 10:01 PM PDT

Ufc117recap_medium

UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" took place tonight (Aug. 7, 2010) from the  the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

From a pure promotional stand point, it was perhaps the most anticipated pay-per-view (PPV) event of the 2010 fight season behind the behemoth box office draw that is Brock Lesnar (UFC 116).

And that was due in large part to the epic, and often disparaging, trash talk of number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen. He declared that tonight was the retirement party for star-crossed champion Anderson Silva, who had never lost a fight inside the Octagon.

He still hasn't.

Sonnen talked the talk, and tonight, he walked the walk ... for more than 20 minutes.

But it was a momentary lapse in judgment in the fifth and final round that was his incredible undoing. Silva got literally manhandled like never before, and he was likely down four rounds to zero heading into the fifth.

Not only did Sonnen outwrestle the seemingly invincible Silva, but he also outstruck him the few minutes while they were on their feet, dropping him on at least two occasions. You could see that Silva was pressing the action, trying to get something going, but Sonnen was just too much for him to handle.

Almost.

"The Spider" wrapped Sonnen up in a triangle choke from the bottom, which Sonnen desperately tried to escape. He almost did, but he tapped in the end. In a flashback to his first fight with Paulo Filho, Sonnen initially protested, saying he didn't give in.

Replays proved otherwise. And despite all of his mind-boggling seemingly schizophrenic behavior before the fight, he admitted in the end, likely reluctantly, that he did in fact earn the silver medal this evening.

Smart move. And it will likely get him a rematch very soon if not immediately.

That was one helluva a comeback for Silva -- likely one of the best ever for perhaps one of the best mixed martial artists this world has ever seen.

Talk about a legacy builder.

All good things come to those who wait, right? That depends on how you describe "good."

In the co-featured fight of the night, former number one contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves hooked 'em up in a rematch from 2006 that would determine the next title challenger.

Yes, despite injuries, medical problems and weight issues, it finally did happened again. But it wasn't pretty.

Fitch did what he had to do, taking down the Brazilian at will and, in the process, eliminating his biggest strength, which is his devastating stand up skills. He worked for several submissions, but Alves is just too talented to finish unless he's hurt.

And Fitch never really hurt the "Pitbull" ... certainly not like he did in their first encounter.

Nonetheless, Fitch earned a dominating decision. Perhaps it was Alves' 13-month layoff or weight issues. Or, quite possibly, Fitch really is the second best 170-pound fighter in the world.

Regardless, he'll need to do more if and when he takes on current division champion Georges St. Pierre again, or, gasp, is put on the spot and has to decide whether or not to pass on the opportunity of a lifetime and fight teammate Josh Koscheck instead.

That, alone, is an interesting situation.

Lightweight locomotive, Clay Guida, was in typical form, bouncing, ducking, burping (seriously) and pressing super promising prospect Rafael dos Anjos throughout most of their almost 15-minute bout.

It didn't matter that he was getting beat to the punch early, or getting blasted with kicks, he still kept coming forward. It ultimately paid winning dividends.

"The Carpenter" delivered another workmanlike performance, pouring it on with punches in bunches, as well as smothering wrestling, which cumulatively made the Brazilian tapout midway through the final round.

It wasn't a slick submission or brutal ground and pound, but rather a broken dos Anjos jaw that was the decision maker. Guida just kept coming, and in the end, dos Anjos just couldn't withstand the pain and keep going.

He broke his will.

UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was out to prove that he still has what it takes to do some damage in the welterweight division, taking on decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist Ricardo Almeida.

He did just that tonight ... with an exclamation point.

Hughes clipped "Big Dog" with a short left in the first round, which sent the New Jersey resident to the canvas a little fuzzy. Hughes carefully waded in, grabbed his open neck from a north-south position and rocked the baby to sleep.

No joke.

Almeida, one would assume based on his background, would be able to defend the "old wrestling" hold, but not even close. He went from weathering the storm to out cold in about 20 seconds.

Chalk another one up for the newest, and perhaps least reluctant, Gracie killer.

Impressive, highly unlikely, and totally awesome finish.

The promotion didn't mess around to kick off the broadcast, sending Junior dos Santos and Roy Nelson to the center of the cage to determine the number one division contender.

Good call.

"Cigano" lit up "Big Country" early and often, hurting Nelson twice in the first round. His upper cut was just a deadly weapon that Nelson could not escape -- he found pay dirt virtually every time he threw it.

To his credit, Nelson survived and battled back, but he just didn't have the conditioning -- or perhaps similar skills -- to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. Nonetheless, he was clearly looking for a one-punch knockout all fight.

Didn't happen.

Now dos Santos gets to relax and wait to see who wins the upcoming bout between UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar and undefeated number one contender Cain Velasquez later this year.

It doesn't get much better than that for us fans.

That’s enough from us — now it’s your turn to discuss "Silva vs. Sonnen" in the comments section below. Sound off, Maniacs.

Tito Ortiz: 'I've noticed Matt Hamill is deaf and has a soft head'

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 08:43 AM PDT

Mc-hamill_medium

Props: HDNet Fights (via Bloody Elbow)

Quoteworthy:

"He's been babied his whole life coming from being deaf of course and he's going to be babied after when I knock him out. He's slow; he's like a big slow ox. I'm going to pick him apart and I know his corner can't really tell him what to do and show him the mistakes he does. I've noticed he's deaf, so he has a soft head, you hit him with more and more shots. You people don't know this. Watch how Franklin knocked him out quick. You hit them with soft shots because their equilibrium, they don't have no equilibrium. And you hit them with shots and you hit them with small shots, I'm not looking' for big shots. I'm looking' for small shots. Little small shots and by the second, middle of the third round you're going to see someone going to sleep and I'll snuggle him."

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz finally noticed that Matt Hamill was deaf and has since formulated the perfect gameplan for defeating "The Hammer" at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 in Anaheim. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" will pepper his foe with "soft shots" because Hammil "don't have no equilibrium." Anyone predicting that Ortiz will indeed secure his first win in almost four years? Or will the "deaf" Hamill leave his former coach dumb and blind?

Latest UFC 117 odds and betting lines for 'Silva vs Sonnen' on Aug. 7

The clock is ticking ... literally.

We're just a few hours away from the upcoming UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" pay-per-view event, which will take place from the Oracle Arena TONIGHT (Aug. 7) in Oakland, California.

And the closer we get to kick off, is less time that you have to place your bets.

Tonight's action is, of course, headlined by UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, taking on number one contender -- and perhaps public enemy number at this point, too -- Chael Sonnen.

After enjoying a bloated -700 line against Demian Maia at UFC 112, "The Spider" has lost some of his webbing, holding firm at a more realistic -450 as the favorite against the mouthy ex-politician, who currently sits as a +325 underdog.

That's Silva's closest line in the past few years, matching his -450 against Forrest Griffin at UFC 101.

Maybe it was his antics last April, or maybe Fedor Emelianenko's loss to Fabricio Werdum back on June 26 proved that no fighter is invincible -- including Silva. Keep that in mind if you want to try and make some money on Sonnen as the UFC heads to "The O."

Get 'em in early, and also check out the spread on some other combatants throwing hands at UFC 117, like Junior dos Santos (-350) vs. Roy Nelson (+250), by clicking here.

It might surprise you who the underdog is in a classic rivalry -- and what's the spread on Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch? I couldn't believe it either.

Back to the Future: MMAmania.com UFC 117 interview exclusive with Jon Fitch

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 07:10 AM PDT

Jonfitch-interview_medium

The epitome of a top contender, Jon Fitch once again finds himself on the brink of a title shot. Dana White said as much during Thursday's UFC 117 press conference.

How fitting is it that to reach the familiar status of title challenger he'll have to defeat his most familiar opponent?

Having already beaten Thiago Alves four long years ago, Fitch has spent the better part of a year focusing on a rematch with the "Pitbull" as their bout was delayed several times to due Alves' medical scare.

All that is history now.

The future awaits. And though it looks eerily similar to the past, going 2-0 against Thiago while earning a chance to claim the top spot in the UFC's 170-pound division and ultimately capture gold will take an effort that even he has yet to produce.

Before he steps inside the Octagon to face the Brazilian on Saturday night, August 7, Jon Fitch was kind enough to talk with MMAmania.com about his teammates at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), the chances of him moving up to middleweight, dealing with the delay of the Alves fight and more.

Have a read:

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Before we talk about you and your fight with Thiago Alves, I want to get your take on some of your teammates at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). First up is Cain Velasquez. He is of course set to fight for the UFC heavyweight title against Brock Lesnar in October at UFC 121. Talk about that match up.

Jon Fitch: Brock is a tremendous athlete, he's a monster. But Cain is a more complete fighter and he's gonna be able to use his well rounded-ness to win that fight. I think it will be back and forth for the first couple of rounds, but I see Cain pulling away later on in the fight. I think the fight will probably take place everywhere. But Cain has a lot more avenues to win this fight than Brock does.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): The most recognizable member of AKA to the general public, Herschel Walker, is rumored to return to the Strikeforce cage sometime this fall. Has he been back in the gym training with you guys and what is that like?

Jon Fitch: Yeah, he's been back several times since his last fight. I'm nothing but impressed with his attitude and work ethic. There have been times in practice when we're working on cardio and I look up and see this 47-year old man pulling away from me. It's amazing. Of course he's not gonna be fighting for any titles soon. He's here because he loves the sport and the competition. He's a great ambassador for the sport. He brings a lot of attention to MMA. He's so well respected too, there's nothing but positives with Herschel.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Alright, moving on to your division and the upcoming title bout between Josh Koscheck and Georges St. Pierre. You're obviously very familiar with both men, talk about how you see that fight playing out.

Jon Fitch: It all depends. It could turn into a stand up fight since both guys have such great wrestling. My fight with Georges was kind of a stand up fight because I was able to stop some if his takedowns and I think Josh will be able to do the same. He's actually working on his wrestling now as opposed to when they first fought. I see most of the fight taking place on the feet.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): I know you've talked about this plenty in the past, but are you dead set on moving up to middleweight should Koscheck beat St. Pierre?

Jon Fitch: If Josh wins and defends, I'll move up. We're talking about another whole year for that to all happen. It'd be time to move on by then anyway. I'd love to fight Georges in a non-title fight just because I want to get that loss off my record. I think Jake Shields is definitely now a player in the division as well. And I think Georges would probably get an immediate rematch for the title just because he's been so dominant. It'll take a long time for all that to play out.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): You don't view the move to middleweight as a detriment to your career? You've been a top-3 guy in the welterweight division for years. To move up to 185, you'd likely have to win a couple fights against some of the big dogs to gain that same status. You're ready to take on that challenge?

Jon Fitch: Honestly, I haven't put hardly any thought into that. It's just a plan that I have should things go the way we've talked about. Really, it's just an answer to the question of fighting my teammates that I'm tired of being asked. Nothing is official, but that's my plan for right now.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Ok, fair enough. I want to ask you about the perceived lack of recognition and praise you receive in the sport. You're 12-1 in the UFC and won an amazing eight straight fights a couple years back. Crazy stats. Do you feel as though you get the credit you deserve for what you've accomplished, or do you not worry about things like that?

Jon Fitch: I shrug it off. You can't let the little things bother you. It's more important to focus on improving your game, focus on your training, and of course taking every opponent very seriously. It's easy to get caught up in all the talk outside of actual fighting. But in 10 or 15 years when the dust settles, people will know who I am and what I've done in this sport. That's all that matters.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Here's another question you're probably tired of answering. You've recently come under some criticism for not being able to finish your opponents as well as your wresting style, which doesn't always lead to the most exciting fight. But I recently watched an interview where you equated it to a baseball player going to bat and looking for the homerun every time only to later strike out. I thought it was a great analogy, talk more about that.

Jon Fitch: Yeah, that's exactly what it's like if you ask me. It's been a big focus of mine to finish fights to get another title shot. I was looking to finish impressively every time. That's all that was on my mind, where as before when I was more consistently finishing people it was just about control the position and inflict damage. The finishes were easier then, but when you try to force things it just doesn't work. I've realized that now.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Let's talk about your opponent at UFC 117, Thiago Alves. The fight was first supposed to happen at UFC 107, then UFC 111, then UFC 115, now it's finally here. We all know the fight had to be delayed several times because of Alves' medical issue, but how did that affect you? It's certainly not an ideal situation to deal with.

Jon Fitch: It was a slight irritation, I'll be honest. It was a bother for a while, but now that it's finally here, I'm ready for it. The biggest problem I had with it was that they kept on pushing us back, and I'm getting married in September. I was worried that they were gonna have the fight on my wedding day, and of course that would be an issue. But it has given me more time to prepare. I've been focused on him for months now. Working on my game plan and strategy for this fight for that long has really kind of worked out to my advantage.

But I was concerned for a while because we weren't hearing anything from anybody. It took him a while to get his medical clearance and during that time we kept asking the UFC what was going on, and we just weren't hearing anything. We asked them if we could have a backup fight ready or at least just guarantee that I was on the Oakland card. Then we finally got the guarantee from Joe Silva that I would be fighting on this card. That was a big relief. It's a struggle as a fighter not knowing when your next fight is because you can't travel and do other things like appearances to make money when you don't event know when your camp is gonna be.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): What's it gonna be like fighting in Oakland, so close to wear you live in San Jose? Are you looking at that as a positive or negative?

Jon Fitch: It's definitely a big advantage for me. Mainly because about a year ago I switched my diet up to where 90% of what I eat is organic. It's difficult to travel and maintain that diet. Like traveling to Memphis, which is the capital of barbecue, and Newark where it's easy to get a good slice, but that's about it. It's just tough. But having easy access to my type of food is going to beneficial. And of course all the fan support will be huge. I think I'm the only Bay Area guy fighting on the card. I'm definitely looking forward to that.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): I gotta get your take on a strange but cool coincidence, I think, that took form on this fight card. The entire main card is match ups of U.S.A vs. Brazil. Obviously it's something us Internet folk get excited for, but is it something that fighters talk about or even notice?

Jon Fitch: Oh yeah, we noticed it a bit ago looking over the match ups. I don't know if they did that on purpose or what. It's actually kind of fun. I know it's not official, but why not make it official? U.S.A vs. Brazil. I'm always down for a friendly rivalry. What kind of patriotic American would I be if I didn't say America is taking this one home? [Laughs]

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): I think I already know the answer to this, but let me ask it anyway. Is there anything you're taking from your first fight with Alves four years ago into the rematch?

Jon Fitch: Not really because we've both grown so much from that first fight. I think it'd be a big mistake to focus on the past. I tend not to look back but look forward.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Figured that. Is there anything you can take from Alves' last fight against Georges St. Pierre where he was outwrestled for five rounds? Georges probably employed the same type of game plan that you're focusing on, no?

Jon Fitch: Well, I can't give too much away here. But yeah, I will say there are definitely fights in his past that I've watched that show me a fairly clear path to victory and I plan on implementing those aspects into my game plan.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Ok, let's wrap this up with a friendly prediction on how the fight is going to play out. Hype it up a bit.

Jon Fitch: This is a fight between the number two and three welterweights in the world. He's been wanting revenge for four years and I want to once again establish myself as the number one contender in this weight class. This is as a good as it gets. It's gonna be an incredible fight.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Thanks so much for time Jon and good luck on August 7. How can fans get in touch with you?

Jon Fitch: Thank you. I have a new website up and running, jonfitch.net. My YouTube channel is OfficialJonFitch. My Twitter account is also @FitchFighter. And thanks to all the fans for their support.

Bellator 26: Jose Vega vs Danny Tims set for Aug. 26 in Kansas City

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 06:57 AM PDT

Tims-vega_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (August 06, 2010) - Longtime rivals Jose Vega and Danny Tims will square off in a long overdue rubber match for an opening round Bellator Season 3 World Bantamweight Tournament fight as Bellator Fighting Championships returns to the Kansas City Power & Light District for the third time this year for Bellator 26 on August 26th.

Both longtime mainstays of the talent-rich Midwest MMA circuit, Vega (8-3) and Tims (9-2-1) each earned their way to the Bellator Bantamweight Tournament with impressive showings on their home turf during Bellator Season 2. Tims steamrolled over Strikeforce veteran Brian Davidson en route to a convincing unanimous-decision victory at Bellator 16. Vega knocked out Jarrod Card with a devastating left hook, just 32 seconds into the opening round at Bellator 22.

In their first meeting it was Tims who had his arm raised in victory. However, Vega didn't agree with the final verdict.

"Our first fight was in his hometown, and I don't like to be a sore loser, but I got him to admit that I beat him right after that fight," claimed Vega. "I ended up losing a real close decision, but we all know why they gave him that, because it was in his hometown."

Tims had a distinctively different recollection of the night's events.

"I never admitted that. He's crazy. I remember that I dominated the whole fight. He likes to talk a lot of trash. I can't wait to fight him. I want to knock him out in the first round."

When the pair met for the second time in the finals of a 2008 grueling single-evening, eight-man tournament, it was Vega who grabbed the temporary bragging rights.

"In the second round he reversed me while I was ground and pounding him and I up-kicked him right before he got up and he just tapped on the cage," said Vega. "I think I broke him mentally because he couldn't take me down or do anything."

Again, there are two sides to every story and Tims' is that, "I fought Jose in the finals of that tournament after fighting literally 25 minutes earlier, and by the second round I was throwing up because I was so dehydrated, so I stood up and told the ref I was done."

Regardless of the conflicting perspectives of their previous meetings, Vega and Tims are both counting down the days to erase all doubt.

"It's no secret that there is no love lost between these two fast rising bantamweights," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Vega and Tims both want this fight to settle the score. This fight should be a great kick off to our Bantamweight tournament."

Bellator 26 will be headlined by opening-round fights in each of Bellator's three-Season 3 tournaments - Heavyweight, Bantamweight and the Women's World Championship - as well as a televised feature fight showcasing Bellator Season 2 Welterweight Tournament semifinalist Steve Carl and four additional fights featuring top local fighters from the Kansas City area. More fights will be announced in the coming days.

Bellator has previously played to capacity crowds at the venue on April 29th and June 17th.

Tickets for the event are on sale NOW at ticketmaster.com and at The Midland by AMC box office in downtown Kansas City. General admission tickets start at just $20 in advance/$30 at the door. Ringside and Terrace tickets are also available for $100 and $50 respectively.

You can catch Bellator 26 and all of this season's Bellator action LIVE on Fox Sports Net, along with action-packed highlight shows on NBC late Saturday nights

UFC 117: Rodney Wallace 'not worried' about the 'Wonderful' wrestling of Phil Davis

Posted: 06 Aug 2010 07:59 PM PDT

Quoteworthy:

"I told [Joe Silva] I was interested in fighting Phil Davis, so he said he would call him. [Phil Davis] said he’d take the fight; he said, 'Rock with it,' so I said, 'Cool' and that was it. (Davis) needs to be ready, in general, to go through the exchanges. I don’t think he is as threatening to me with his wrestling, as he was to the other two guys. They were more worried about it than I’ll be, being that I come from a wrestling background. He’s a real gifted wrestler, but I’m not worried about that in the fight. If it’s him wrestling me to death, I’m not worried about that."

UFC light heavyweight Rodney Wallace is not concerned about Phil Davis' pedigree or hype. When his original opponent Stanislav Nedkov had to withdraw with just two weeks to go until the fight, "Sho'Nuff the Master" asked specifically for Davis.
