Report: Anderson Silva out with injured rib until early 2011

Quoteworthy:

"After the first round he [Anderson Silva] said he broke his ribs. He said told me he could not breath because of the rib. I told him to forget the rib and work the movement of legs and he would get the triangle… After the fight he went to the hospital and did an x-ray and the doctor said he did not break it, it was just a crack. Anderson is expected to return in February or March."

Ramon Lemos, a jiu-jitsu coach for UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, talks about the injury that the Brazilian sustained before his fight with Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 and more than likely exacerbated while getting pounded for four straight rounds. Despite the injury, "The Spider" was able to pull off a miraculous come-from-behind submission in the fifth and final round to push his perfect record inside the Octagon to a staggering 12-0. His manager, Ed Soares, already confirmed that there were no clean breaks, but Silva demonstrated that he was clearly uncomfortable while trying to sit through the post-fight press conference. Silva was also very vocal about missing his family. Is six months to recover from a rib injury being more than careful or does Silva perhaps need a little more time to fix what went wrong against Sonnen before he competes again?

MMA Quick Quote: Mo 'Executioner' Lawal feels no pressure as underdog against Feijao

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:55 PM PDT

King-mo-2_medium

"Feijao knows he wants the knock out. He doesn’t want the submission. He trains in the ground game, but I’m training with guys in Jiu-Jitsu that are comparable. So I’m not worried at the ground at all because I’ve got good submission defense.... I don’t know. If you ask me if I could beat anybody I’m going to say I can beat anybody. I’d win against anybody with a good game plan. It doesn’t matter who it is. Except my momma. It doesn’t matter who it is, I’ll beat them with a good game plan.... I’ve only been fighting for two years. There’s no pressure on me whatsoever. If there’s pressure on anybody it’s Feijao. He has the name. He’s been fighting longer and he’s been training longer. I remember watching Feijao just mashing people in the IFL. I think people look at me as having the bigger name but I don’t care. I think he’s the favorite. I’m the underdog even though I’m the champ.... I may be implementing a new style like from Bernard Hopkins, one of my favorite boxers. I’m going to implement his style. And maybe if that doesn’t work than a little of Paul Williams. So you’ll all be seeing some new stuff from me."

-- Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion "King" Mo Lawal talks about his mindset heading into his first title defense against Rafael "Feijao’’ Cavalcante at Strikeforce: "Houston," which is scheduled for the Toyota Center in Texas on Saturday, Aug. 21. Lawal is undefeated, and he most recently bested highly-touted Gegard Mousasi in his last outing. Nonetheless, Lawal feels that he is the underdog when he and the talented Brazilian square off in the main event of the Showtime telecast less than two weeks from today. Is Lawal trying to convince himself that he is indeed just a young, hungry and inexperienced fighter who has far exceeded expectations to date or is he really heading into the toughest test of his promising career? Or is it both?

Four-time All American wrestling phenom Eric Larkin joins the Bellator roster

CHICAGO, Ill. (August 09, 2010) — Bellator Fighting Championships today announced the signing of former Arizona State University wrestling prodigy and fast-rising mixed martial artist Eric Larkin to its rapidly expanding roster.

The 2003 recipient of the illustrious Dan Hodge Trophy, Larkin captured the 2003 NCAA Division I National Championship at 149 lbs on his way to becoming the only wrestler that year nominated for ESPN's ESPY Award for best male collegiate athlete.

During his time spent wrestling at ASU, Larkin became a four-time All American along with picking up four PAC-10 Championships.

"Eric Larkin’s wrestling pedigree is as good as anyone competing in our sport today," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Larkin possesses an overwhelming amount of athleticism which gives him huge potential to become a top fighter in the sport. Ben Askren and Joe Warren, both tremendously talented wrestlers, have dominated at Bellator. I’m excited to see if Eric can follow a similar path."

Following graduation Larkin took a job as the Assistant Coach of the ASU wrestling team where he coached from 2005-2009. After an unsuccessful 2008 Olympic bid, the 30-year-old who had been wrestling since age 11 decided to follow in the footsteps of numerous fellow Sun Devil wrestlers-turned MMA fighters and began training MMA full time.

"Seeing friends of mine from ASU like Ryan Bader, CB Dollaway, and Aaron Simpson get to where they are now in MMA and working out with them all the time let me know that I should make the transition," said Larkin. "They were always trying to talk me into it and finally I was like, 'Alright, I'll do it'."

The transition has proven successful as Larkin has compiled an unblemished record of 2-0 since making his professional fighting debut in 2009. Larkin currently trains out of The Lions Den in Scottsdale, Arizona and is a close training partner of Bellator Season 2 Welterweight Tournament Champion Ben Askren.

"I have the same outlook on my approach to the fight game that Ben [Askren] does: I'm going to take you down and ground and pound you until someone can stop it," said Larkin.

Larkin currently walks around at around 164 lbs and plans to make his Bellator debut in the lightweight division before transitioning to featherweight to compete in an upcoming Bellator World Featherweight Tournament.

"I'm really looking forward to testing myself with Bellator. It's time to gauge myself and see where I'm at," said Larkin.

UFC 118 'Prelims' on Spike TV to feature Lauzon vs Ruediger, Lentz vs Winner

New York, NY, August 9, 2010 – Live from the TD Garden in Boston, MA, Spike TV showcases two live undercard bouts from "UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn II" on Saturday, August 28 at 9:00pm ET/6:00pm PT.

In action, local product and sure to be crowd favorite Joe Lauzon ("The Ultimate Fighter 5" alum) of Bridgewater, MA takes on his former housemate from the fifth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Gabe Ruediger, and Nik "The Carny" Lentz will square off with Andre Winner, fighting out of Leicester, England.

Lauzon (17-5) burst onto the mixed martial arts scene with a shocking knockout of former lightweight champ Jens Pulver at UFC 63 in September 2006. A cast member of "The Ultimate Fighter 5," Lauzon won his first three UFC bouts before losing to fellow New Englander Kenny Florian via TKO in April 2008.

After winning two of his last three fights, Lauzon needs a win in front of his hometown fans to continue his ascent to the upper ranks of the lightweight division.

Fighting out of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Gabe Ruediger (17-5) is perhaps best known to UFC fans for his stint on season five of "The Ultimate Fighter". But Ruediger’s mixed martial arts expertise extends even further, as he once held the lightweight title in the WEC.

He enters his bout with Lauzon on a six fight winning streak, and is looking to make a big impression in his return to the Octagon.

Nik Lentz (20-3-2) is undefeated since his debut in the UFC, with wins against Rob Emerson and Rafaello Oliveira on his resume, as well as a draw with the veteran Thiago Tavares. The Minnesota product will look to continue his impressive run as he takes on "The Ultimate Fighter: US vs UK" alum, Andre Winner.

A product of Leicester, England, Andre Winner (12-3-1) is one of many impressive fighters coming out of Team Rough House. Winner was introduced to the MMA world as a member of Team UK on the ninth iteration of "The Ultimate Fighter," in which he marched all the way to the finals before losing to Team Rough House teammate Ross Pearson in a bruising contest.

He has since bounced back with consecutive victories against Roli Delgado and Rafaello Oliveira, and will look to win his third straight contest against Lentz.

Other bouts on the card might air on Spike TV, to be determined by the length of the fights.

Bobby Lashley: 'Batista' is a good fight for the fans, but not for my career

"It's not really the direction I want to move (in), but if it's worth it and they really think he's ready and Strikeforce wants me to fight him, I'll take the fight. I've had a good game plan up to this point and I really want to move in the right direction. Dave's just starting out. I'm looking to better myself and get better opponents each time. I'm not disrespecting Dave at all, but he's new to the game. That's definitely a fight for the fans, but not so much for my career."

Strikeforce heavyweight attraction Bobby Lashley is hoping to avoid the role of welcoming committee for fellow ex-WWE wrestler Dave Bautista who is rumored to make his Strikeforce debut later this year. Lashley himself returns to the world of cagefighting after a brief stint on the injured reserves when he takes on IFL and Rage in the Cage veteran Chad Griggs at the upcoming "Houston" event from the Toyota Center on Aug. 21. Is "The Animal" a step backwards for the "Dominator?" Or does he fit right in with the Lashley resume which consists of Wes Sims, Bob Sapp and Jason Guida?

Looks like Ed Soares isn't the only one against an immediate rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Shoulder pain forced "The Phenom" to bow out of his title fight with "The Spider" earlier this year, but insists he's now healthy and ready to go after corrective surgery. Is Belfort correct in assuming this is the fight fans want to see? Or would you rather give Sonnen another crack at the gold?

UFC 118: Will Gabe Ruediger be ready for an 'uphill battle' against Joe Lauzon?

"When I started this camp three months out, I was in better shape on Day 1 than I was on the final day of my last training camp. Everything is better - my punches are better, my boxing is better, my jiu-jitsu is sharper. Every single aspect of my game three months ago was better than when I fought Sam Stout. Gabe (Ruediger) has a way more uphill battle. It’s a short-notice fight. I don’t know how hard he’s been training. Some people train real hard all the time and some people take it easy. Who knows? We’ll see how it all pans out."

UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon is ready to send fellow Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 contestant Gabe Ruediger back to the regional circuit when they throw hands at the upcoming UFC 118 event in Boston. "Godzilla" has won six straight fights -- all finishes -- and may be a far cry from the colonic clown who got booted from the Spike TV reality show back in 2007. Is it "J-Lau" who's in for an uphill battle? Lauzon claims to have fixed the problems that plagued him in a January loss to Sam Stout, but like the Boston native says, we may have to see how it pans out. Who's your pick?

Round 5 Exclusive '3-Pack' With Buffer, Preview Of 'Live' Series At UFC Fan Expo In Boston

MARKHAM, Ontario, Canada, August 9, 2010 - After two hugely successful UFC® Fan Expo events in Las Vegas, Round 5, a leader in producing mixed martial arts collectible figurines, will give East Coast UFC fans the first chance to experience two significant new collections at the upcoming UFC Fan Expo, August 27-28 at the John B. Hynes Convention Center in Boston.

In addition to "3-packs" featuring Bruce Buffer, exclusive to Expo in the U.S., Round 5 will display prototypes of its high-detail "Live" series with Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell.

Round 5 can be found at Booth No. 2524 on the convention floor.

The "3-packs" are enhanced versions of the new Round 5 "Versus" line, distinctly new figurines highlighting battle scenes from great UFC matches, supplemented with a Buffer figure, not available in any other Round 5 Series at mass retailers in the U.S.

The three matchups available in limited quantities at the Expo are "Rampage" Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva (UFC 92), Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell (UFC 66) and Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar (UFC 100).

Images of the "3-packs" can be viewed at http://www.round5mma.com/blog/?p=446.

Buffer will also sign autographs at the Round 5 booth at the Expo.

Expo attendees will also get the first look at UFC "Live," highly-detailed, realistic, scaled figure statues, packaged separately. Created with the higher-end collector in mind, these premium figures will measure a full 10 inches and will also come with a UFC-branded display stand. Together, the Couture and Liddell figures, created at a 1/7 scale, complete a battle scene from the epic June 6, 2003, first meeting between the mixed martial arts legends.

"UFC Fan Expo arrives at the perfect time for us to offer the exclusive 3-packs with Bruce Buffer and to show fans and collectors the exciting new figurines coming for the holiday season," said Damon Lau, Round 5 president and co-founder. "The 'Live' line is completely different from anything we have produced, and we are sure that fans will notice and enjoy that distinctive look and feel."

Fans will also be able to purchase the new "Ultimate Collector" Series 3 figurines at the Expo, including new representations of Rich Franklin, Anderson Silva, Antonio Nogueira, Diego Sanchez and both UFC and PRIDE versions of Wanderlei Silva.

"Ultimate Collector" Series 1 and 2 are now available at leading retailers across North America, and Series 3 will be available shortly. A list of retailers can be found at www.Round5MMA.com.

Ed Soares: Chael Sonnen couldn't finish Anderson Silva -- why should he get a rematch?

Quoteworthy:

"[Anderson] showed what a champion is made of. He fought through all of that adversity and through all of the things that were going on in there and he stayed focus and never gave up and that's the heart of a champion ... Once he tapped, Chael kept fighting. He didn't let go because he wasn't sure of what was going on. He wasn't going to give that position or submission up until he was sure. Once again, Chael tried to deny that he tapped until he told the ref, 'I believe you,' it's like, come on dude, that's the same shit you did with Filho and Babalu. If you're going to tap, then tap ... I mean, I don't necessarily think an immediate rematch is legitimate. It's not like he won by decision. You got submitted, man. Anderson got a few bumps and bruises, but let's be realistic, you're on a guy 23 minutes and you couldn't finish him? Why should he get a rematch?"

Count Ed Soares among the people not excited to see "Silva vs. Sonnen 2" after his top fighter, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, survived a 23-minute beatdown at the hands of Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 last Saturday night in Oakland. Soares believes it's an open and shut case based on the fact that Silva finished the fight -- but fans may want to see another go-round simply because no one has ever dominated the Brazilian the way Sonnen did. How about it fight fans, Silva vs. Belfort -- or Sonnen? What gets your PPV dollars in early 2011?

UFC 117: The Nogueira McBlack-Belt gets the last laugh in Oakland

"I’m a Nogueira brothers black belt, and I’d give my life for them. I say that and I don’t need to patronize them nor them me. Rodrigo is my master and Rogério is a brother and teacher to me. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here today. I decided to put on the gi as a tribute to them and for the things I’d said. I told Rodrigo I’d get the submission in this fight. I told him that. Everything worked out yet again."

Reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva validates his jiu-jitsu black belt under the Nogueira brothers with a fifth round submission win (triangle choke) over Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 on Aug. 7 in Oakland. Sonnen referred to "The Spider's" black belt as "a toy that you get in a happy meal" in his pre-fight trash talk but in the end, was denied what could have been a lopsided win to usurp the Brazilian's title. Now the wrestler and ex-politician must wait for an eventual rematch while Silva cures what ails him and gears up for his next title defense. But has Sonnen paved the way for future challengers?
