The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11: Episode 10 recap and discussion

Episode 10 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 11, featuring coaches Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and Tito "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Ortiz, gets underway and Chuck is freaking out because Dana just told him that Tito is pulling out of their UFC 115 fight on June 12.

Tito says he doesn't have a choice and has no desire to go through another surgery.

Right off the bat we go to the weigh ins between Josh Bryant and Jamie Yager. Both fighters make weight without incident.

Back at the house Jamie asks the guys to keep it down while he gets his beauty sleep. Yager feels confident and reminds the Minority Report "there is no cardio in the chin" while Josh takes out the trash.

Literally.

Quarterfinal fight #4: Josh Bryant (10-0) vs. Jamie Yager (2-1)

Round 1: Quick in and out for both fighters. They rush again and Yager gets briefly stunned and responds with a missed kick. Bryant pushes him to the cage but Yager escapes. High kick finds the back for Yager. Then a low kick. Another to the back. Bryant eats one in the nuts and action is halted. They resume and Yager finding a home for the low kick. Someone off camera is hooting and hollering like a Native American conjuring spirits over a campfire. Yager with a high kick but Bryant catches it and they bunny hop across the cage. Bryant can't seem to pull the trigger and Yager hits another low kick. Bryant finally uncorks one and it flattens Yager who hits the canvas and spastically kicks his legs in defense. Bryant jumps into his guard and they struggle for position until the horn.

Round 2: Low kick lands for Yager. Yager backs him up with punches and gets one in the nuts. They restart and Yager working kicks. Bryant tags him and Yager tries a few flying knees but gets air. Yager falls to the the ground and Bryant right to side control. Yager stands up into a guillotine but he powers out and lands a few punches on the break. They start trading in the center of the cage and both men landing like crazy but are tired and not doing enough damage to finish. Yager gets dropped again and Bryant on top working elbows. Both men are spent. Bryant works the arm but doesn't have the strength to secure it. Ten seconds left and Yager is eating elbows. Round over and it's a draw but Yager doesn't sound like he's in a hurry to get to round three.

Round 3: Never happens. Yager quits on the school.

Dana walks over to Chuck and tells him he was wrong for questioning all of his picks. Then Coach Ortiz calls Yager a pussy for quitting and says he let everyone down and has no heart as they cart the wounded fighter away in an ambulance.

The irony is so thick it's melting my laptop.

Dana tells Tito he's going to fly him to Los Angeles to have a second doctor evaluate him. He's officially off the show and Chuck already has a replacement for UFC 115. Ortiz call his situation "challenging" and is disappointed that he got fired because he never got fired before in his life.

I guess he forgot about his appearance on Celebrity Apprentice.

Anyway, Tito gets in his car and drives off and promises he'll be back. Only he never tells his team, who watches him from the van and Clayton McKinney (sans green hair) says he looks like a guy who just got fired.

So Dana has to wrangle the guys from the van and tells them Ortiz got the boot. They are a little upset that Tito never said goodbye or anything and just dissed them. Dana says not to worry they're getting a new coach.

Later that night Yager rolls in from the hospital to find out Tito is gone. Yager says he has muscle damage but other than that he's okay. Tavares tells him the team is still on his case for quitting. Yager says if you doubt him then just bring it.

Uh huh.

Tito comes back to the house to say goodbye and his team is glad to see him. He gives them the rundown on what his medical condition is and talks about why he's so devastated about leaving and eventually pulls the God card.

The next day everyone gathers for the semifinal announcements and they are:

Brad Tavares vs. Court McGee

Kris McCray vs. Josh Bryant

After the announcements lo and behold Rich "The Aceman" Franklin is in da howse!

Stay tuned next week as Franklin gets a top name assistant coach, the two semifinal bouts get underway and Jamie Yager pushes one too many buttons.

See you next week!

Cung Le vs Scott Smith rematch confirmed for Strikeforce: 'Fedor vs Werdum'

Hard-hitting middleweight Scott Smith will indeed be out to prove that his sensational come-from-behind knockout of ex-Strikeforce 185-pound Champion, Cung Le, was no fluke when the middleweights hook 'em again at Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on June 26.

The promotion today made the long-rumored match up official for its upcoming event on Showtime.

"Hands of Steel" first met Le back at Strikeforce: "Evolution" last December, where the part-time movie star battered him for the better part of three rounds. Apparently, Le forgot to read the manual on Smith's third round heroics and got caught in one of his patented Hail Mary "miracles" in the bout's final minutes.

Repeat -- or retaliation? We will find out soon enough.

Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum," which will air live on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET on fight night, will feature Fedor Emelianenko taking on grappling wizard Fabricio Werdum in the main event. Current Strikeforce Women's Champion Cristian "Cyborg" Santos will also be in action against Jan "Cuddles" Finney.

Josh Thomson vs Pat Healy announced for Strikeforce event in San Jose on June 26

Former Strikeforce lightweight champion, Josh Thomson, will return to action against Pat Healy at the upcoming Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event, which is slated for the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on June 26.

The promotion today made the 155-pound showdown official.

Thomson is coming off a thrilling three-round unanimous decision loss to Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, Gilbert Melendez. It was a title unification bout -- "The Punk" had to make-way for an interim champion ("El Nino") while he recovered from a spate of injuries.

In fact, the rematch -- Thomson got the nod in their first encounter with a lopsided five-round decision back in mid 2008 -- was the first fight back after a 15-month layoff.

Ring rust, therefore, might not be as much of an issue as he prepares to take on the surging veteran.

Healy is currently enjoying a three-fight win streak. He most recently outpointed Bryan Travers on all three judges scorecards at Strikeforce: "Challengers 8" just last month.

"Bam Bam" has been all over the map throughout his 38-fight career, including stops under the International Fight League (IFL), Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banners, among many others.

A big win here against a former champion might put an end to his career carousel and earn him a permanent spot on the Strikeforce lightweight roster.

MMA Quick Quote: Paulo Filho calls out Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua

"I couldn’t miss the chance to challenge [Shogun]. I want to fight him and feel the pressure up close by the end of my career. That’s just something I want. Shoot, I’ve been getting lambasted on forums. Folks are acting with a lot of disrespect. But it’s what I want and I know I can make it.”

Maligned middleweight enigma Paulo Filho (19-1) shares his grand plans for the future with Graciemag.com, which include a fight against current UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua. "Ely" plans to fight four times in 2010, apparently overlooking the fact that he's pulled out of three events in the past 12 months, including a last minute withdrawal from his Bellator superfight against Hector Lombard back on May 13. Can he finally get his affairs in order and return to his past dominance? Or will he crack before ever getting the chance to fulfill his dream of fighting "Shogun?"

Spike TV confirms UFC 116 prelims featuring Schaub vs Tuchscherer and Grove vs Reljic

Spike TV will once again offer mixed martial arts fans a look at select preliminary bouts when it airs live under card action from the upcoming UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" pay-per-view (PPV) on July 3 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC heavyweight prospects Brendan Schaub and Chris Tuchscherer will bring their bout to the airwaves alongside the 185-pound scrap between Kendall Grove and Goran Reljic.. The action begins with limited-commercial interruption at 9 p.m. ET on Spike.

"UFC Prelims" was designed as a lead-in to the Zuffa PPV's starting with UFC 103 back in 2009. While most of the ratings have been solid, UFC 111 scored just 1.2 million viewers -- an all-time low for the series.

That number is expected to improve for last Saturday's prelims event leading up to the UFC 114 PPV.

"Lesnar vs. Carwin" will feature a titanic heavyweight showdown between division champion Brock Lesnar and interim titlist Shane Carwin. It marks the return of the promotion's biggest box office draw, Lesnar, who will return from a career-threatening intestinal problem to once again establish himself as the undisputed man among men.

UFC 116 will also feature a middleweight showdown between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama, as well as a highly-anticipated rematch between Stephan Bonnar and Krzysztof Soszynski.

Jens Pulver released from his WEC contract

Jens_pulver-0023_medium

Former UFC lightweight champion turned WEC featherweight contender Jens Pulver has apparently seen his last days as a mixed martial artist under the Zuffa banner.

MMA Fighting has confirmed an earlier report that "Little Evil" has been released from his WEC contract.

After flirting with retirement in late 2009, Pulver (22-13-1) returned to the cage and was submitted by Javier Vasquez at WEC 47: "Bowles vs. Cruz" back on March 6. It was his seventh loss in eight fights and extended his losing streak to five.

There were discussions to retain Pulver in a WEC broadcasting role but UFC President Dana White has indicated that will no longer be an option.

From White:

"He's has been released. We had talked about Jens being a part of the WEC somehow, but he's not broadcasting."

Pulver is perhaps best known for his lightweight victory over BJ Penn at UFC 35: "Throwdown" way back in July of 2002. They rematched five years later at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Finale but "The Prodigy" would avenge his loss via rear naked choke.

It was Pulver's second straight loss inside the Octagon and the catalyst for his move to the WEC. Unfortunately he would post a 1-5 record there and be finished in four of those five defeats.

The thirty-five-year-old MMA pioneer has recently indicated that he intends to keep fighting out of financial necessity.

UFC Quick Quote: A 'frustrated' Todd Duffee had a 'horrible' game plan against Mike Russow

"It was on the temple I felt the shot...it just shut down the cns system couldnt use my arms to catch my fall or anything i was watching everything till my head hit the canvas(which may have put me out)i blinked and he hit me with a hammer fist....the way i fell made it look much worse than it was...I wasn't gassed i was more frustrated and trying to stick to the game plan should of threw that out after the first 30 seconds ...my game plan was horrible......i wasn't snapping punches instead i was muscling them shoudl of kicked should of grappled should of fought....I'll be back and show I am more than capable of wrestling etc., thanks for the support and thanks to the people who helped me out sorry i let you down it will pay off in the long run."

UFC heavyweight prospect Todd Duffee speaks out on The Underground (via Bloody Elbow) about his knockout loss to Mike Russow last Saturday night (May 29) on the main card of UFC 114 in Las Vegas. Duffee was beating up the Chicago cop for the better part of two rounds but ended up on the wrong side of the law when Russow pulled a rabbit out of his hat and stopped his larger foe in the third round with a shot to the head. Does the loss diminish Duffee's potential? Or will it only make him stronger? Let's hear your choice for his next opponent...

Quoteworthy:

"My whole game plan was to go out and perform. I had a chance to finish the fight and I didn’t, so it is what it is. I’m not too worried about it. If you leave it up to the judges, that’s what happens. I’m just going to have to start finishing fights, I guess. They said I’ll be back. Joe Silva said before the fight, ‘You’re doing me a favor here, thanks very much and no matter what happens you’ll be back.’ I’m just going to continue to do my thing. It’s been working pretty good for me. I think with every fight I’ve had in the UFC, I’ve gotten better. I’m not the best guy at any one discipline, even at my gym, so I’m constantly learning and picking up new things. I’ll be back bigger, stronger, faster next time and more technical. I’ve got the guys who know how to do it, they won’t let me slack and it will be fun."

UFC 114 wunderkind Jason Brilz keeps his chin up after a questionable split decision loss handed down by judges in his light heavyweight battle with former PRIDE star Antonio Rogerio Nogueira back on May 29. Brilz seemed to get the better of "Minotoro" and won over the fans with his gritty performance after filling in for an injured Forrest Griffin. Where does he go from here? Fantasy matchmakers let's hear your picks.
