Bellator 23 results: Joe Warren and Alexander Shlemenko win tournament championships

Bellator23-champs_medium

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 24, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships concluded its hugely successful second season with two more thrilling upsets on Thursday as middleweight Alexander Shlemenko scored a stunning TKO and featherweight Joe Warren won a hard-fought split decision to emerge as the Season 2 Tournament Champions in their respective divisions.

The sold-out event at Louisville's Fourth Street Live downtown entertainment district tied a ribbon on Bellator Season 2 in fitting fashion as fans were once again treated to a full card of electrifying fights that also included shocking upsets at bantamweight and in a Women's Feature Fight.

But the night undoubtedly belonged to Warren and Shlemenko, whose victories earned them $100,000 in prize money and the chance to fight reigning Bellator World Champions Joe Soto and Hector Lombard, respectively, in world title fights this fall.

Shlemenko, a 26-year-old army combat fighter known for his reliance on spinning back-fists and leg kicks, came out swinging in his typical style from the opening bell. But it was a far-more-conventional right hook to the jaw that eventually finished the heavily favored Bryan "The Beast" Baker roughly mid-way through Round 1.

The devastating punch left Baker (13-2) dazed and slowly crumpled him to the canvas before Shlemenko moved in for the finish with a flurry of punches. Referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight due to unanswered blows at 2:45 into Round 1.

It was just the second time that Baker had suffered a loss as a pro with the other coming at the hands of UFC star Chael Sonnen more than two years ago.

"We had heard that Alexander Shlemenko was one of the best middleweights in Europe and he definitely proved that here tonight," Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney said afterward. "He beat a very, very talented fighter in Bryan Baker and he's more than earned the right to face our champion Hector Lombard later this year."

Shlemenko, for his part, said the win was also a statement on behalf of all pure strikers in MMA today.

"This victory means that strikers soon will be all over MMA and that Bellator Fighting Championships will be owned by the strikers," he said through his translator.

Warren , meanwhile, took a far-more-circuitous route to his title. The 33-year-old former NCAA all-American and Greco-Roman wrestling world champion, appeared to be all but finished near the end of Round 1 when his opponent, the previously undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Patricio Pitbull, dropped him to the canvas with a right cross and then began a vicious ground-and-pound before Warren was saved by the bell.

But Warren rebounded in remarkable fashion during Rounds 2 and 3, digging deep and using his world-class wrestling skills to score points with a series of takedowns that were each followed by relentless ground-and-pound attacks punctuated with sharp elbows and stiff forearms to Pitbull's head.

The split decision victory was even more impressive given that Warren spent much of the day battling a stomach virus that left him unable to keep food down or maintain his balance.

"I feel tired but I'm very happy now," he said after the fight. "I fought a great fighter in Pitbull and now I'm the champion. I'm the baddest man on the planet!"

Rebney agreed, saluting Warren 's resilience and his will to win even in spite of his illness.

"He showed up tonight with a sickness that would have put a lot of people in the hospital and beat a world-class fighter and put on the kind of performance that you just can't script," he said. "What he did tonight was just epic and very, very impressive."

Earlier, in the first televised fight of the night, Fresno, Calif.-based striker Zoila "The Warrior Princess" Frausto scored a huge upset with a first round knockout of the world's top-ranked 125-pound female fighter, England 's Rosi Sexton.

At just two minutes into Round 1, Frausto (7-1) landed a left knee to Sexton's chin, knocking her unconscious and dropping her to the canvas before finishing her with three straight right hands to the jaw. It was just the second career loss for Sexton in 12 pro MMA fights.

"I saw the opening and I just threw the knee up," Frausto said afterward, adding that she thinks she now deserves to be ranked No. 1 in the world at 125. "I've been shooting for No. 1 since I got into the sport. This is exactly why I got into MMA."

Also Thursday, in what was billed as an "Eliminator Bout" to determine the latest entrant into Bellator's forthcoming Season 3 Bantamweight Tournament, two-time Wyoming state high school wrestling champion Nik "Garfield" Mamalis scored his second consecutive Bellator victory to improve his pro MMA record to 10-4 and punch his ticket into the tournament's eight-man field.

The soft-spoken Mamalis used an aggressive attack to neutralize L.A.-based rising star Albert Rios (12-5) via TKO at 4:40 into Round 1.

Afterward, Rebney said that Mamalis had more than earned his place in the Bantamweight Tournament draw.

"That's what Bellator's all about," Rebney said. "it's about giving a guy like Nik who hasn't had a chance on the big stage the opportunity to that and then he takes that opportunity by the throat."

The evening also played host to four non-televised "Local Feature Fights" showcasing top rising stars from Louisville , Cincinnati and Southern Indiana . The results of those fights are as follows:

- Brent Weedman def. John Troyer via armbar submission - Round 1, 4:55

- Daniel Straus def. Chad Hinton via unanimous decision

- Stoney Hale def. Mike Fleniken via rear-naked choke - Round 2, 4:20

- Kurt Kinser def. David Overfield via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 2:30

Bellator returns to TV in August for its much-anticipated third season, which will feature eight-man tournaments at bantamweight and heavyweight as well as a first-of-its-kind Women's Tournament showcasing eight female fighters ranked among the top 10 in their respective weight classes.

Each fight will once again be broadcast LIVE in primetime on Fox Sports Net and during special taped highlight shows every Saturday night on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2.

MMA Quick Quote: Jan Finney 'confident,' not 'nervous,' heading into Cris Cyborg fight

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 08:46 PM PDT

Cris_cyborg_and_jan_finney_medium

"The four-fight winning streak I am on has given me a lot of momentum and confidence going into Saturday. Weight will not be a factor. I have fought at 140, even 150 before. This is very exciting for me because I literally have nothing to lose. There are no expectations for me. Everyone seems to be treating this matchup as if Cris is fighting someone they picked from the crowd or something like that. All that does is give me extra motivation. The key for me is to keep firing back, no matter what she is trying to do. I am in great shape. I am not nervous. I am excited for this opportunity. I hope to open some eyes come Saturday."

-- Fire back? Perhaps a trainer, or concerned family member, needs to provide Jan Finney with this video of her opponent, Cris Cyborg, smashing the pads during yesterday's open media workout for the Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event this weekend. Finney is correct on two accounts: She's on a four-fight win streak and has got nothing to lose against arguably the world's most feared female mixed martial artist alive today. However, all the confidence in the world might not help her, or any woman for that matter, in a slugfest with the devastating Brazilian striker. In fact, it could be dangerous. Real dangerous. But it brings up a good point: Is the key to defeating Cyborg beating her at her own stand up, rock 'em, sock 'em game, or is it implementing a "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" strategy? Or, will it take a grinder who can close the distance and challenge her conditioning? My vote is for the latter ... what say you, Maniacs?

The UFC 115 pay-per-view took in a gate of $4,221,787 on June 12 from the GM Place in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada, according to official figures from the Vancouver Athletic Commission (VAC) released today.

The final attendance of 17,669 was a result of 14,621 tickets sold and 3,048 tickets given away (comp/suite).

Despite pre-event speculation that sales (and resales) were choppy, just 138 tickets remained unsold.

The UFC dished out $1.285 million in fighter salaries for the live event and another $340,000 in additional bonus money for the four participants who delivered outstanding performances.

"Liddell vs. Franklin" featured what may have been the swan song for Chuck Liddell as opponent Rich "Ace" Franklin stopped "The Iceman" cold in the first round of their main event attraction.

Famed heavyweight veteran Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic won back-to-back fights inside the Octagon for the first time in his career when he submitted hard-hitting striker Pat "HD" Barry.

UFC 115 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Liddell vs Franklin'

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 05:57 PM PDT

Ouch

The Vancouver Athletic Commission (VAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin," which took place on Saturday, June 12, 2010, from the GM Place in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada.

With several of the bouts ending early (and violently), there were a handful of fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors.

Chief among them is Rich "Ace" Franklin — whose bone-crunching win over Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell left him in a pink cast. Also getting benched was Pat Barry in his loss to Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. "HD" went home with a foot that looked like it belonged to Thunder just before he exploded in Big Trouble in Little China.

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC 115 injuries and their medical instructions:

Rich Franklin: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact). Additional suspension of 180 days (left forearm) unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor.
Chuck Liddell: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact). Additional suspension of 180 days (head/face contusions and lacerations) unless cleared by negative CT scan.
Pat Barry: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact). Additional suspension of 180 days (right hand and left ankle) unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor with negative X-rays.

Ben Rothwell: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact). Additional suspension of 180 days (right knee) unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor.
Rory MacDonald: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact). Additional suspension of 180 days (head/face contusions) unless cleared by negative CT scan.

Jesse Lennox: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact). Additional suspension of 180 days (left thumb and right ankle) unless cleared by negative X-rays.
Paulo Thiago: Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact (head contusions).
Evan Dunham: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact (head contusions).

14 Day Suspensions (Precautionary reasons):
Martin Kampmann
Carlos Condit
Tyson Griffin
Matt Wiman
Peter Sobotta
James Wilks
Claude Patrick
Mike Pyle

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Keith Jardine cut by the UFC following TUF 11 Finale loss to Matt Hamill

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 01:15 PM PDT

Jardineliddell01a_medium

Former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2 contestant and 13-fight Octagon veteran Keith Jardine has been released by the UFC following his TUF 11 Finale loss to Matt Hamill on June 19 in Las Vegas.

That's the word from MMA Fighting, who confirmed Jardine's release with Dana White earlier today.

"The Dean of Mean" had dropped four consecutive bouts and six of his last eight over the span of three years. In addition to losing last Saturday night to "The Hammer," Jardine came up empty against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Thiago Silva, and Ryan Bader.

Not exactly the weakest competition.

Regardless, the man who kept himself in contention by defeating the likes of Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell will now earn his next win, or loss, in an organization not named the UFC.

Anyone want to lay odds on how quickly he turns up in Strikeforce?

Fedor Emelianenko: 'The UFC will have time to offer me a contract'

Quoteworthy:

"It has always been for me that some fighters would appear and people would want to see me in matches against these fighters. That will always happen. As for the UFC, when my contract with Strikeforce is over - I have two fights left on my contract - the UFC will have the time and the opportunity to prepare and offer a contract that may be interesting to me."

What? You're tired of all the Fedor to the UFC talk? Get outta here! That's impossible. Especially when "The Last Emperor" drops lines like this. It appears there is still a chance after all that Fedor will one day grace the Octagon with his presence. The UFC just has to present him with an "interesting" offer. That shouldn't be too hard, right ladies? (see above) Are we just wasting out time here holding out hope for a potential Fedor vs. Lesnar fight that would rock the MMA world? Or, is there something to the Russian heavyweight's recent quote?

WEC 50: Mackens Semerzier vs Javier Vazquez in the works for August 18

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 11:18 AM PDT

Mackens_pressconference_pic_medium

A featherweight fight in the form of Mackens Semerzier vs. Javier Vaszquez has been verbally agreed upon for WEC 50, which is set to go down on August 18 from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Versus.com has the word.

Semerzier made a huge impact in his promotion debut back at WEC 43: "Cerrone vs. Henderson" in October 2009 when he shocked the heavily-favored Waggney Fabiano by submitting the jiu-jitsu black belt with a sneaky triangle choke of his own.

Unfortunately "Mack da Menace" was unable to capitalize on his momentum, dropping a unanimous decision loss to the rugged Deividas Taurosevicius at WEC 46: "Varner vs. Henderson" earlier this year.

Mackens was scheduled to fight Anthony Morrison at WEC 48 back in April but had to pull out of the contest due to an injury.

Vazquez struggled when he first joined the promotion, dropping consecutive split decisions at WEC 42 and WEC 43. "Showtime's" biggest strength comes from his submission game, having finished 60 percent of his fights via tapout.

And that strength led him to his big win over over Jens Pulver at WEC 47. Vazquez's armbar submission win back in March afforded him another fight in the Zuffa-owned promotion while it costed "Lil Evil" his career with the WEC.

WEC 50 is shaping up to be a killer card. Headlining the August 18 event is Dominick Cruz's first title defense as he once again is set to battle Joseph Benavidez. Also on tap is Urijah Faber's debut at bantamweight, as the "California Kid" takes on Takeya Mizugaki.

UFC 118 'Prelims Live' to feature Lauzon vs Etim, Rivera vs Sakara on Spike TV

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 10:04 AM PDT

Lauzon-etim_medium

Spike TV today announced that their UFC 118 "Prelims Live" telecast will include bouts featuring local boys Joe Lauzon as he takes on Terry Etim, and Jorge Rivera, who is slated to battle Alessio Sakara.

UFC 118 is set for August 28 from the TD Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lauzon came up empty against the resurgent Sam Stout at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" back on January 8. It was only the second loss for the former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 contestant since his stunning debut under the Zuffa banner against Jens Pulver way back in September 2006.

"J-Lau" has been training with BJ Penn in Hawaii and will need to be at 100-percent to overcome the hard-hitting Etim.

The Brit had quietly assembled a four-fight winning streak starting with a unanimous decision victory over Sam Stout at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben;" however, Rafael dos Anjos put an end to his winning ways with a textbook armbar submission at last month's UFC 112: "Invincible" pay-per-view in Abu Dhabi.

He'll need to concentrate on submission defense for a second straight bout if he hopes to deny Lauzon the win.

After toiling with mediocrity for just about five years in more than 10 fights, switching weight classes and training camps, Alessio Sakara appeared to be on the verge of his big break, getting matched up against former number one contender Nate Marquardt at UFC 116 on July 3 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unfortunately, the Italian striker had to pull out of the contest with "The Great" due to the untimely death of his father. The fight with Rivera was announced shortly thereafter.

"Legionarius" has put together a decent win streak over the last few months. Having defeated the likes of Thales Leites at UFC 101 and most recently James Irvin at UFC on Versus 1, Sakara had put himself in position to really climb up the middleweight ladder.

Rivera is coming off a dismantling of Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night 21 back in March and has won three straight bouts raising his professional record to 18-7.

The longtime UFC veteran now has a career mark of 7-5 in the UFC, with his knockout win over the "Rock" perhaps being his best performance yet. If he can outstrike Sakara at the end of August, the 38-year old would likely find himself fighting with the big boys of the UFC middleweight division.

Strikeforce: KJ Noons and Jorge Gurgel agree to meet on August 21

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 09:34 AM PDT

6925-noons-vs-diaz_medium

Fresh off his win over Conor Heun at Strikeforce: "Los Angeles," K.J. Noons is set to take on Jorge Gurgel at a yet to be named Strikeforce event on August 21 in Houston, Texas.

MMAWeekly.com first reported the proposed match up yesterday.

Prior to his split decision win over Heun earlier this month, Noons defeated Andre Amado at DREAM 13 back in March after more than a year away from the cage.

It was his first bout since "retiring" from the sport in late 2008 after he was stripped of his 155-pound title for refusing to accept a rematch with Nick Diaz under the terms Elite XC was offering.

"King Karl" felt that his previous performance against Diaz (a first round technical knockout) and his lone title defense -- a first round technical knockout victory over Yves Edwards in June of 2008 -- was enough to at least earn himself a bigger paycheck than Diaz in the rematch.

The promotion, however, apparently disagreed, causing a big mess and ultimately leading to Noons being forced to relinquish his title.

The ex-boxer then decided to make an attempt to return to his roots inside the ring, but a disappointing decision loss to James Countryman earlier this year threw a wrench into those plans. The City Boxing product did manage to put together a solid record of 4-1 as a pugilist, but he likely wasn't going to be winning a world title anytime soon.

Gurgel, last seen in action in November of 2009 where he lost a unanimous decision to Billy Evangelista, will be bringing a record of 13-6 to the contest having lost three of his last four contests.

Despite earning "Fight of the Night" honors in a losing effort against Aaron Riley at UFC 91, Jorge was released from the UFC and quickly scooped up by Strikeforce.

In fact, his first fight with the promotion coincidentally enough came against Conor Heun, a bout Gurgel would win via unanimous decision. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu black belt has gone to a decision in seven of his last eight fights, winning four of them.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more news on this developing Strikeforce card.

"I didn’t make any excuses after the last fight with Gilbert, but ring rust is real. I didn’t get it done, and Gilbert looked very good but I know why I lost and that is because I didn’t listen to my corner. On Saturday, the plan will be, like always, to get off first and dictate the pace. The plan against Gilbert was not to make it a brawl but that is what happened, I feel I’ve learned from that fight so expect a different Josh Thomson on Saturday than the one you saw against Gilbert. This is going to be a tough fight against a tall guy. There are lots of big fights down the road for me but they will go away fast if I am not totally focused on Saturday."

Former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson talks to reporters at yesterday's open workout about getting back into the mix against Pat Healy at the upcoming Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event, which is slated for the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on June 26. "The Punk" (16-3) is coming off a thrilling five-round unanimous decision loss to Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez after a 15-month layoff -- but promises there will be no ring rust against Healy. The Edmonton Combative Sports Commission yesterday issued its list of medical suspensions for those who competed at the WEC 49: "Varner vs. Shalorus" event which took place on June 20 from the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

It was a clean sweep across the board as every fighter that saw action last Sunday night will also see a medical suspension in one form or another.

The majority of suspensions were for precautionary reasons save for the two main event participants, who are required to follow up with their doctors after a bone-crunching performance that left both fighters licking their wounds.

Here is the complete list of WEC 49 injuries and their medical instructions:

Kamal Shalorus: Suspended indefinitely unless cleared by a doctor. X-rays required for both hands and right leg.

30 Day Suspensions (precautionary reasons):

Yves Jabouin
Mark Hominick
Will Campuzano

21 Day Suspensions (precautionary reasons):

14 Day Suspensions (precautionary reasons):

7 Day Suspensions (precautionary reasons):

Report: A 'disappointed' Yoshihiro Akiyama 'not pleased' with UFC 116 change in opponent

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 07:13 AM PDT

Mma_akiyama1_sw_576_medium

Chris Leben may be Zuffa's new company man, but it doesn't sound like he's a sexy enough replacement for Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" on July 3.

"The Crippler" was called up on short notice to replace Wanderlei Silva in the pay-per-view's co-main event when "The Axe Murderer" suffered a broken rib in training. While fans let out a collective groan over the incident, most were able to accept Leben as an adequate replacement considering the time constraints.

Akiyama? Not so much, according to his comments on Korea's Daum.net (translated by Fighter's Only):

"I am not pleased with the change. There are just ten days left until the contest for me to determine [Leben’s] threats and the time is insufficient to establish a tailored gameplan. Leben is also not as high-profile as [Wanderlei] Silva and that does not help me. If there is to be a replacement I was hoping for a big name. I spent one year preparing hard for this fight and this news has come as a big disappointment, my motivation has waned. I do not know yet what will happen ... In the worst case, I will not take part in the [UFC 116] event. We are working hard to resolve this issue."

It's hard to imagine a scenario where "Sexyama" withdraws from the promotion's biggest show of the year, but it doesn't bode well for the Judo master to be heading into his July 3 contest unfocused.

Akiyama hasn't competed since a razor thin split decision over Alan Belcher in his UFC debut nearly one year ago. Now he must overcome a sizable layoff, a change in opponents and a lack of motivation. Can he pull himself together and take his frustrations out on Leben?

We'll know soon enough.
