Don't call it a comeback: MMAmania.com Strikeforce: 'Los Angeles' interview exclusive with KJ Noons

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 02:30 PM PDT

Kjnoons_medium

KJ Noons has been here for years.

"King Karl" wants the MMA world to know that he never left the sport, he just took some time off to beat people up inside of a ring as opposed to a cage. After compiling a 4-1 boxing record over the last couple years and with a win over Andre Amade in his first mixed martial arts fight in 21 months at DREAM.13, it's hard to argue with him.

Though the contest under the Strikeforce banner he really wanted, a rematch with Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett, fell through at the last minute, Noons is ready to fight whoever, wherever, and have fun doing it.

In anticipation of his Strikeforce: "Los Angeles" bout with Conor Huen, the former EliteXC Lightweight Champion took some time to talk with MMAmania.com about having to deal with a late opponent change, his commitment to MMA, and of course, Nick Diaz.

Check it out:

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Talk to me about what it was like for those couple days where Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett pulled out of the fight, the search for a replacement opponent was on, and the date for your fight was even in question. That must have been a hectic 48 hours.

KJ Noons: I didn't know what happened with "Krazy Horse." And yeah, my fight was moved from the 16th to the 26th and then back to the 16th. Conor was on the undercard of the June 16th show so they moved him up to fight me. I don't even know all the details of the situation and how it was resolved.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Do you think Bennett's decision to take another fight, in which he lost, just a couple weeks before he was set to fight you was the reason he pulled out?

KJ Noons: I didn't even know he had another fight. I mean, usually when you fight, regardless of the outcome, you can't fight again for a while, and doctors won't even allow you to. I have no idea why he would do that. The fight against me would have been viewed by way more people and he would have been paid a lot more to fight on a main card of a Strikeforce event than some little local show. It would have been an exciting match up. I'm disappointed like everyone else.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): That leads me to my next question. How disappointed are you that you won't be able to avenge your previous loss to Bennett? Having an opponent change just days before a fight is not an ideal situation. Has it bothered your training and mental preparation for the fight?

KJ Noons: No, I'll fight whoever they put in front of me. "Krazy Horse" is my only loss, so I'm upset I won't get another shot at him. It would have been fun. He's an explosive fighter and he's crazy, literally. But I don't train to fight one specific person. I just worry about being the best I can be regardless of the opponent.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): What do you know about Conor Huen? He's unknown to most fight fans. Have you seen much tape of his previous fights?

KJ Noons: I saw his last fight with Jorge Gurgel. He comes in shape. He's big. He's a dangerous opponent. He's hungry. He's a good all-around fighter. I think it'll be a much tougher fight than most people think it will be. This is his shot. This is his opportunity to make a name for himself. Any fighter in that situation is dangerous.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Let's get to your transition from MMA to boxing and now back to MMA. You had two-year-long layoff from the cage. You just won your first fight back a couple months ago. How did you feel in the fight?

KJ Noons: I never left baby! I never left. [Laughs]. I mean, I always stay in shape and stay active, so it wasn't that big of a transition. It's just like riding a bicycle, man. It's fun for me.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): [Laughs] Ok. With that being said, are you completely focused on your MMA career, or is boxing something that you would still like to pursue?

KJ Noons: I'm 100% committed to MMA right now, but I'm not giving up on boxing. I want to show Strikeforce that I'm committed to wining another title. But I wouldn't say boxing is totally out of the picture.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Typically in the past, you've never really trained with one camp or team. You usually just hop around from gym to gym. Is that still the case?

KJ Noons: It's Team Noons, man. I just like to jump from gym to gym. I used to be a part owner of a gym and promote a gym, so I know how it works. I don't feel like having my name associated with just one gym and having people make money off my name, you know? I just go to wherever the best fighters are. If the best fighters were at Team ABC, I would go there. I just want to train with the best. There are so many great athletes in the Southern California area to train with. I just want to get better.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Alright, you have to know that now that your back in MMA, fans are going to be interested in a fight between yourself and Nick Diaz. The rematch fell through a couple years ago for various reasons, which ultimately led to you moving to boxing. Is that a fight you would like to make happen even though he's moved up to welterweight now?

KJ Noons: Yeah, it's definitely something that Strikeforce wants do and wants to make happen, so we'll see where it goes. Nick has always been a great fighter, and he's on a tear now. So yeah, it's a fight that's in my mind. It'll happen in the future.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): I want to give the chance to talk about the EliteXC situation that I've referred to here. Is there anything that you want to tell fans about your side of the story, or would you just rather leave it in the past?

KJ Noons: I'll just leave it alone. The past is the past. No need to rehash it.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Alight, fair enough. Considering your long layoff from the game, do feel as though your ready to jump back into competing with top-level guys right away, assuming you get by Heun? Or, do you think you need a couple more fights to iron out the wrinkles in your game so to speak?

KJ Noons: Yeah, absolutely. I'm ready. I'm ready to fight whoever Strikeforce wants me to fight, be it the best guys or whatever. I'm ready. I want to fight as much as I can and just stay active. I want to get back into the MMA scene. I'm still the champ in my eyes. I'm looking to add more belts to the collection.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Let's come full circle here. Like you said, you don't know much about Conor Huen. Do you have any particular strategy or prediction for the match up?

KJ Noons: I think it's gonna be a great fight. My hand is gonna be raised in the end. People should definitely tune in. I train my butt off for this stuff. When people watch KJ Noons fight, regardless of the opponent, they're gonna watch a great fight. That's what I do. I'm a fighter. I'm an entertainer. Win, lose or draw, it's gonna be a good show.

James Kimball (MMAmania.com): Thanks for your time KJ and good luck on June 16th. Do you have any sponsors or a website you'd like to plug?

KJ Noons: Yeah, fans can check out www.kjnoons.com. Thank you for the interview and thanks to all the fans for their support. Tune in on the 16th, it's gonna be fun.

Despite broken arm, UFC 115 winner Rich Franklin hopeful to avoid surgery

All good things come with a price. For Rich Franklin, the good thing was a first round knockout of Chuck Liddell at UFC 115. The price was a broken arm.

But contrary to initial thoughts, surgery may not be required after all, essentially shortening the amount of time the former UFC champ is on the shelf.

From Franklin's Twitter:

"My cast will stay on for the nxt 3 wks. We will tak new x-rays then. Looks like the bone will heal wo surg."

This message, written in the mysterious language of Twitter, translates to: "My cast will stay on for the next three weeks. We will take new X-rays then. Looks like the bone will heal without surgery."

Follow that? Good.

So, considering this information and the likelihood of a late Fall 2010 return to the Octagon for Rich, who would you like to see "Ace" take on next? Don't keep you opinions to yourself now, ya hear?

Spike TV's UFC 115 'Prelims Live' draws 1.5 million viewers

Spike TV once again offered mixed martial arts fans a look at select preliminary bouts when it aired some live under card action of UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin" on June 12 from the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The cable network's officials today announced that the two-fight broadcast was viewed by 1.5 million fans, making it the third most watched prelims show along with UFC 108's version.

UFC lightweight stars Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman fought to a rather underwhelming conclusion as "Handsome" was awarded the submission victory even though Mac didn't, well, submit.

And the 155-pound scrap between Evan Dunham and Tyson Griffin displayed great back and forth action while seeing Dunham officially emerge as one of the UFC's brightest young stars.

UFC 115 of course featured a reworked main event of Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 coaches Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and Rich "Ace" Franklin, a fight that very well may have signaled the end of Liddell's illustrious career.

Bellator signs undefeated heavyweight Ron Sparks to fight at Bellator 23 in Louisville

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 11:01 AM PDT

Ron-sparks_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (June 15, 2010) -- Ron "The Monster" Sparks, an undefeated heavyweight KO artist and Kentucky native has signed on to fight in the "Local Co-Main Event" during Bellator 23 at the Fourth Street Live entertainment district in downtown Louisville next Thursday.

Sparks, a longtime boxer and kickboxer who has also been training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for the past four years, is a perfect 5-0 as a pro MMA fighter, including four first-round knockouts. Three of his fights lasted less than 40 seconds.

He was originally scheduled to face the undefeated Bobby Lashley at tomorrow night's Strikeforce event in Los Angeles, but was freed up to sign with Bellator after Lashley withdrew from the fight late last month because of injury.

"We are happy to have an up-and-coming heavyweight like Ron taking part in the Local Co-Main Event of our Louisville show," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Ron knocks people out and fans love to see that in the heavyweight division, so Ron should put on a great show for the fans in Louisville."

Sparks, 36, was introduced to combat sports by his father, who studied martial arts during the Vietnam War. He began taking classes in kickboxing as a teenager and became a regular sparring partner for a variety of local boxers and kickboxers while also competing in a wide variety of kickboxing promotions himself, including K-1.

In 2006, he met Louisville-based MMA manager and trainer Jason Weihe, who convinced him to give the sport a try. In addition to his five wins, he's also been booked as an opponent for a bevy of top heavyweights including Ray Mercer, Tim Sylvia and Bob Sapp, only to have those fights fall through because when those opponents backed out.

Sparks calls his new contract with Bellator "the next big step" in his career.

"Bellator's a great organization and this is a great opportunity to fight in front of my hometown crowd," Sparks said. "I love to keep the fight on my feet and I love going for the knockout. There ain't nothin' better in this world than knockin' a guy out."

Fight Me 1: Josh Neer vs Jesse Finney booked for 'The Battle Begins' on Aug. 14 in St. Charles

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 10:37 AM PDT

Neer-finney_medium_medium

Former UFC lightweight standout Josh Neer has agreed to fight Jesse Finney at the inaugural Fight Me event, entitled "The Battle Begins." The match up will take place at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri on August 14.

KO Dynasty CEO Mickey Dubberly confirmed the bout to MMAmania.com earlier today.

Following a gutsy and hard-fought win over Mac Danzig at UFC Fight Night 17: "Lauzon vs. Stephens" in early 2009, the returning Neer had inked a four-fight contract extension that was expected to keep the 155-pound dynamo inside the Octagon for an additional four fights.

The promotion would only give him two.

After losing back-to-back fights to Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 101 and Gleison Tibau at UFC 104, "The Dentist" was released from his Zuffa contract.

And it's been proven time and time again that guys who fight like Neer does will never be unemployed.

Going 2-1 since his UFC release and most recently losing to Eddie Alvarez in the Bellator 17 super fight back in May, Neer will be looking to get back in the win column against the undefeated Jesse Finney.

The Missouri native Finney has compiled a 6-0 record over the last three years, only being pushed past the first round once.

His last two contests have both taken place on the undercard of Strikeforce events and have both resulted in submission wins; against Josh Bumgarner at "Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields" and against Justin DeMoney at "Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery."

Canada detains Mirko 'War Cop' in hopes of extracting dirt on Yugoslavia

Quoteworthy:

"The first day I was kept for four hours and two more the next day. Although they were not satisfied with my answers they let me go to the hotel in the city, to sleep. They asked me to think about the questions raised. I was threatened with deportation, but appealed to the Croatian Embassy. The Consul was urgently flown in from Ottawa, and the UFC hired the best lawyer for immigration issues. They obviously knew what would happen because my lawyer was on the runway at the airport! The inquiry was painful for me, but I must say that the Immigration Bureau officials very correctly performed their job. They used what they have to, but there are obviously very interested in the military and police matters from the former Yugoslavia. Most of them were interested in my military service. I served in 1993-1994 as a conscripts, but I was not involved in combat activities. They asked me if I was involved in the torture of civilians, asking for names of command lines and tactical commanders. They were asking for details of my activities in Lucko ATJ [anti-terrorist unit] which I joined a few years after the war. They gave me a list of names for me to confirm, but I did not do it. I can not confirm one name because it is still a matter of dignity and principles. I said to myself, ‘If it comes to it I am ready to go home‘. They could have done what they wanted with me but [in the end] they let me fight."

UFC heavyweight Mirko Filipovic talks about his run in at the Canadian border on his way to the UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin" event in Vancouver last Saturday night (June 12). "Cro Cop" has political and military ties with his home country of Croatia and Canadian officials were apparently very interested in some of the secrets the former PRIDE star may or may not have had locked away in his vault. Fortunately the Croat was allowed to continue on but not before calling for reinforcements. Can the UFC expect more of the same as it continues its global expansion? Or is it possible this was just an isolated incident?

Strikeforce: 'Los Angeles' predictions, preview and analysis

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 08:51 AM PDT

Sf-la-short_medium

Strikeforce: "Los Angeles" is all set to blow the roof off the Nokia Theater at L.A. LIVE tomorrow night (Wednesday, June 16) at 11:00 p.m. ET in Los Angeles, California.

The Showtime televised event will mark the return of Renato "Babalu" Sobral as he takes on hard-hitting slugger "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler.

Several of the promotion’s other top fighters will be in action as well, including a lightweight match-up between KJ Noons and Conor Huen as well as a 205-pound scrap between Tim Kennedy and Trevor Prangley.

Remember: MMAmania.com will provide LIVE updates with blow-by-blow, round-by-round commentary of the main card action on fight night, which is slated to air at 11 p.m. ET.

To help us better prepare for tomorrow night's rumble in L.A., MMAmania.com's west coast correspondent Mustafa G is breaking down the main card fights with a closer look at each contest.

See what "G-Unit" has to say about Strikeforce: "Los Angeles" after the jump.

195 lbs.: "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral

Backgrounds:

Robbie Lawler:
3-1-1 for his last five fights.
Recent Win: KO'd Melvin Manhoef with a haymaker hook, despite being picked apart on the feet for the majority of the fight.
Recent Loss: Was submitted in the first round via guillotine by Strikeforce middleweight champ, Jake Shields.
Strengths: One punch power, TKO machine.
Weaknesses: 4 of his 5 losses are all by submission, calling his ground game into question.

Renato Sobral:
4-1 for his last five fights.
Recent Win: Submitted Rameau Sokudjou with a slick brabo choke.
Recent Loss: Was TKO'd by Gegard Mousasi in the first minute of round 1.
Strengths: Good jiu-jitsu, 18 of his wins are via submission. With 43 professional MMA fights he's got more experience than Lawler.
Weaknesses: Coming off a brutal knockout loss, not known for great stand up.

Mustafa G predicts: There's a lot riding on these fights, as the winner will receive a title in their respective weight classes. It's tempting to write this off as a "striker vs grappler" match-up but that is oversimplifying the bout. Lawler's training with the HIT Squad provides him with access to training with great wrestlers, so Babalu may have difficulty taking Lawler down.

This should seem like great news for Lawler, who could sprawl and brawl, thus giving him more opportunities to let his heavy hands fly. Lawler's striking, however, is not that technical. Every kick Manhoef landed on Lawler's thighs had me wincing in pain, and it didn't look like Robbie was going to be able to walk to his corner at the end of the round, let alone pull off the KO punch he did against his opponent.

Babalu's best bet is on the ground, but if he shows up with more technical striking than Lawler, such as setting up leg kicks like Manhoef, he can throw Lawler off guard, disrupt his rhythm and even score points in the stand up. If it goes to the ground, I'm a big fan of Babalu in this fight. Plus, Sobral's 21 more fights offers him considerably more experience than the "Ruthless" Granite City slugger, so that may very well play a factor in the fight. Also since there's no bad blood between the two fighters, if Babalu locks a submission on Lawler, he will most likely not keep it on after the ref calls the fight.

Although I genuinely believe this fight could go either way, I still cannot get the image of Babalu being so quickly dropped to the ground and TKO'd by a much younger, faster, and stronger Mousasi. I see this fight going similarly, the younger, heavy-handed Robbie Lawler overpowering Babalu on the feet, and TKO'ing the Brazilian middleweight.

Prediction: Lawler via technical knockout

170 lbs.: Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos vs. Marius "Whitemare" Zaramoskis

Backgrounds:

Evangelista Santos:
Recent Win: Landed a nice head kick followed up with strikes against Daniel Zarate in December.
Recent Loss: Split decision loss to Joey Villasenor, TKO'd by Mousasi
Strengths: Chute Boxe brawler, 10 of his wins are via KO or TKO
Weaknesses: 8 of his 13 losses are by KO or TKO, doesn't really excel in one area.

Marius Zaramoskis:
Recent Wins: String of head kick victories in Sengoku and Dream
Recent Losses: Was picked apart by Nick Diaz
Strengths: Kickboxing. He's a young, welterweight Mirko Cro Cop
Weaknesses: Not much known about his ground game, still young.

Mustafa G predicts: It's difficult for me to see Evangelista pulling off a win here. The less popular of the two Cyborgs seems outmatched by his younger opponent. Zaromskis, in addition to being exciting as hell to watch, possesses technical stand up skills and pushes an exciting and fast pace.

Santos doesn't look to have much of a chance standing with the "Whitemare". In addition to the head kicks that Marius will be looking to send home, the frenetic pace that the Lithuanian fighter pushes can be a problem for Evangelista. Since this is a welterweight fight, and Santos is considerably more muscular than Zaromskis, I can picture Marius tiring Mr. Cyborg out, and finishing the fight via KO.

Prediction: Zaromskis via knockout

205 lbs.: Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Prangley

Backgrounds:

Tim Kennedy:
Recent win: Locked a north-south choke on Zack Cummings in September. Jeff Monson would be proud.
Recent Loss: Dropped a unanimous decision to "Mayhem" Miller in December of 2007.
Strengths: Mixes all aspects of MMA, (wrestling, submissions, stand up) well. Knockout power in his hands.
Weaknesses: Still somewhat inexperienced, hasn't faced top-flight competition with the exception of Nick Thompson, who at some point was a top welterweight.

Trevor Prangley:
Recent win: Rear naked choke over Marcus Sursa
Recent Loss: Was KO'd by Jorge Santiago with a nasty knee to the body.
Strengths: Wrestling, ground game.
Weaknesses: Stand up nothing to write home about.

Mustafa G predicts: Neither Tim Kennedy nor Trevor Prangley have had significant victories over relevant fighters as of late, so it's difficult to call. The former UFC pugilist should have the edge over the Strikeforce Challengers product. Kennedy looks better every time he fights, but Prangley has more fights and has had them more often.

Couple this with Prangley's wrestling experience, and I see this fight going to the ground early where the AKA fighter will most likely control the pace of the fight for all three rounds.

Prediction: Prangley via unanimous decision.

155 lbs.: Conor "Hurricane" Heun vs. Karl "KJ" Noons

Backgrounds:

Conor Heun:
Recent Win: TKO'd James Berto
Recent Loss: Unamimous decision loss to Jorge Gurgel
Strengths: Jiu Jitsu
Weaknesses: Stiff and un-intimidating stand up.

KJ Noons:
Recent Win: Unanimous Decision Win over Andre Amado at Dream 13
Recent Loss: KO'd by Crazy Horse Bennet in February 2007.
Strengths: Good stand up, knockout power.
Weaknesses: Layoff from fighting top guys for two years (luckily for him, he's fighting Heun)

Mustafa G predicts: This fight is probably going to give KJ Noons Productions some more material for a highlight reel. Heun needs to try and get the fight to the ground to win. In the "Hurricane's" last bout, his shots were sloppy and his stand up was almost non-existent, causing him to freeze and back tread whenever Gurgel threw any punches or kicks his way.

The former EliteXC champ is exponentially better in the stand up department than Gurgel, and has fought and won against legitimate competitors in Nick Diaz and Yves Edwards.

Prediction: Noons via knockout

Bellator Fighting Championships adds top-ten world ranked Angela Magana to Season 3 Women’s Tournament

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 07:36 AM PDT

Angela-magana_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (June 14, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that top-ten 115 pounder Angela Magana has been added to Bellator's stellar list of top-competitors in the upcoming Bellator Season 3 Women's Tournament.

According to recently released rankings, the rising star is currently the #8 ranked female fighter in the world at 115 lbs. Magana, who holds a professional record of 9-4, faces the toughest test of her career in a stacked 115 lbs. tournament roster.

"We are very pleased to add Angela Magana to the compelling list of 115 pound women competing in our Season 3 tournament. There is not an easy fight anywhere in this tournament and Angela should present a very tough fight for everyone she faces in this tournament," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

Hailing from a rough beginning in Los Angeles, Magana eventually relocated to New Mexico where she found a healthy outlet for her aggression in high school wrestling. She excelled, making the varsity team and later going to the State finals. In addition, Magana also holds an impressive amateur boxing record compiled through junior high and high school.

However, it wasn't until she first watched the 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme film Bloodwork that she became interested in martial arts. "I watched it over and over again," said Magana "It wasn't exactly MMA, but it sparked my interest and really inspired me to start training."

Magana found a gym and started to hone her jiu-jitsu skills by entering numerous grappling tournaments while still using her wrestling skills as a base. 13 MMA fights later, Magana stands ready to face the best-of-the-best in Bellator's Season 3 Women's Tournament. The New Mexico fighter says she hopes for a re-match with undefeated fellow tournament fighter Jessica Pene, whom she lost to last September. Although she makes no excuses for the loss, Magana said it was the toughest weight cut of her life.

Magana is one of five announced participants in Bellator's forthcoming Season 3 Women's Tournament along with Japanese MMA sensation Megumi Fujii, widely regarded as the No. 1 pound-for-pound female fighter in the world, 11-1 British tae-kwon-do black belt Rosi Sexton (the world's No. 1-ranked 125 lbs. female fighter), 12-5 Seattle submission artist Lisa Ward and 7-0 Southern California striker Jessica Pene. The tournament kicks off in August.

Magana currently resides in Farmington, N.M with her 8 year old daughter, where she trains with Greg Jackson sister gym Team Four Corners.

Sandwiched between two great UFC cards is another stellar line up now official for August as the WEC will bring event number 50 to the Palms Casino Resort on August 18 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Cruz vs. Benavidez" was recently made official and features WEC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz (15-1) making his first title defense against former foe Joseph Benavidez (12-1).

The newly-minted 135-pound kingpin snatched the gold from the clutches of one-and-done champion Brian Bowles at WEC 47 back on March 6.

It was his sixth straight win since a submission loss to former featherweight champion Urijah Faber way back at WEC 26 in March 2007. His path to the title included a unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Benavidez in August of last year.

Now Benavidez gets a chance at both the belt and revenge.

Fortunately his 2009 loss to Cruz did little to disrupt his momentum.

Benavidez quickly bounced back with a technical knockout win over Rani Yahya at WEC 45 back in December before a convincing submission win over former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres in March.

Speaking of former champions, no major WEC card would be complete without the inclusion of former featherweight title holder Urijah Faber, who makes his bantamweight debut against the venerable Japanese standout Takeya Mizugaki.

Faber was recently pushed out of the 145-pound weight class by reigning division champion Jose Aldo. Aside from a Jens Pulver submission win, "The California Kid" dropped consecutive fights to his temporary successor Mike Brown, first at WEC 36 and then again at WEC 41.

His frame may be better served at 135-pounds, but don't expect any liberties from Mizugaki.

The rugged Japanese brawler made a name for himself in his promotion debut, giving then-champion Miguel Torres all he could handle for five rounds in the main event of WEC 40 back in April 2009.

Since that loss, Mizugaki has gone 2-1 for the promotion, defeating Jeff Curran (WEC 42) and Rani Yahya (WEC 48) but losing on points to Scott Jorgensen at WEC 45. A convincing win over a "name" like Faber could possibly get him right back into contention.

Also on tap for August 18 is a lightweight bout between Zach Micklewright and Bart Palaszewski while fellow 155-pounders Anthony Pettis and Shane Roller mix it up on the Versus televised card.
