UFC Quick Quote: Amilcar Alves believes stand up is the key to beat Mike Pierce in August

"I've seen Mike Pierce's fights. He's a strong and explosive fighter. His strength is takedowns. I'm going to train in takedowns so much not just to face him, but to become a more complete athlete. I'm a judo black belt and have got to take advantage of all my background into MMA. I know my stand-up is better than his so I will explore it. But if the fight goes to the floor there won't be any problem because I train at Nova Uniao and I think I don't need to speak about the jiu-jitsu that is worked on from there and all the champions that have been formed."

UFC newcomer Amilcar Alves spoke to Brasil Combate about this promotional debut. The Nova Uniao prospect is scheduled to square off against Mike Pierce at UFC 118 on August 28 in Boston. Besides his judo background, the Brazilian is known for his accurate strikes, and believes that his striking will be the difference come August. That being said, do you think Amílcar has the tools to notch his first UFC win in his first try? Or, will Pierce welcome him the Octagon with a rude awakening?

UFC 116: Seth Petruzelli returns to the Octagon to face Ricardo Romero on July 3

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 11:59 AM PDT

Seth-petruzelli_medium

Out with Kimbo Slice, in with Seth Petruzelli. It's strange how certain people always seem to be connected in one way or another.

Just a couple weeks after Kimbo's release from the UFC following his UFC 113 defeat at the hands of Matt Mitrione, the man who (sorta) shocked the world by handing the Bahamian brawler his first ever professional MMA loss in just 14 seconds, Seth Petruzelli, has re-signed with the world's leading mixed martial arts promotion and will be facing UFC newcomer Ricardo Romero at UFC 116 from Las Vegas, Nevada on July 3.

"The Silverback" posted the good news just minutes ago on his Facebook page.

Petruzelli, a competitor on season two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), has won four consecutive fights since being cut from the UFC after his loss to Wilson Gouveia at UFC Fight Night 9 back in 2007.

Seth's opponent for his return bout in the Octagon is Ricardo Romero, who will be making his UFC debut at the tender age of 32.

The New Jersey native has compiled a 10-1 record during the course of his three-year career, where he has spent his entire time with the Ring of Combat promotion. He holds a notable win over The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 contestant James McSweeney.

Romero will be carrying a five-fight win streak into the fight with Petruzelli, and his only loss came via a disqualification due to an illegal soccer kick.

"The Silverback" is going to have his work cut out for him from the get-go if he wants his second go-around with the UFC to last longer than the first.

Glover Teixeira signs with MFC; Expected to make debut soon

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 11:58 AM PDT

For the second time in a week, the Maximum Fighting Championship has added a first-class talent from Brazil to its growing stable of impressive fighters.

Light heavyweight Glover Teixeira (9-2) has joined the MFC talent pool and is expected to make his organizational debut at the soon-to-be-announced MFC 26 event.

The native of Sobralia, Brazil, has scored seven of his nine victories by way of KO/TKO and came highly recommended by several sources, not the least of which was his friend, MFC middleweight title contender Thales Leites.

"When you hear things like ‘He can beat anyone in the division’ and those kinds of statements are coming from well-respected people, you have to take notice," said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. "I believe that Glover can make an immediate and serious impact in the grand scheme of our light heavyweight picture.

"The MFC is becoming more of a global product and international fighters are stepping up to become part of the action. It is an important aspect of our growth to be adding fighters like Glover Teixeira, Thales Leites, Tom Watson, and Luciano Azevedo."

The Teixeira signing comes on the heels of the MFC adding Azevedo (16-8) to its contingent of lightweights.

The Rio de Janeiro product is the lone fighter to hold a victory over world-ranked standout Jose Aldo, earning a submission victory in 2005. Azevedo, whose career victory list is also highlighted by a decision win over veteran Din Thomas, is also expected to make his organizational and North American debut at the forthcoming MFC 26.

Teixeira has fought somewhat sparingly throughout his career, no more than twice a year since turning pro, but he is expected to become significantly busier under the MFC banner. The 30-year-old has fought twice already in 2010 in his native Brazil, coming away with a pair of convincing victories.

Notable wins have come at various points for Teixeira beginning with the lone decision outcome of his career, taking the judges’ verdict over veteran Matt Horwich. Teixeira scored a stunning five-second knockout win over Jorge Oliveira and earned the biggest win to date in his career by handing "The African Assassin" Sokoudjou the first loss of his career with a stellar first-round knockout only 1:41 into their 2006 encounter.

While clearly well-versed in the stand-up game, Teixeira has showcased a multitude of skills on the ground as well. He captured the 2009 title in the under-99 kg class at the Brazilian ADCC championship which qualified him for the world competition alongside such well-known names as Dean Lister, Vinny Magalhaes, and Ricco Rodriguez.

Teixeira had previously competed against Jeff Monson and Brandon Vera in grappling events, and he was featured in Season 2 of the "TapouT" reality TV series.

UFC 115: Chuck Liddell isn't worried about long layoff, planning on knocking Rich Franklin out

Quoteworthy:

"I'm not worried [about his 14-month layoff], and I'm not going to worry about it. My timing is on, my training is on, so I can't see that affecting me in the fight. I don't think it's going to make a difference. Like I said, being in shape the whole time, it's not like I'm cutting a bunch of weight. I didn't take a year off and get fat. I've been in shape for a long time. I didn't start my camp at 250. I started at 224. I'm not worried about it. I'm in shape and ready to go. If Rich wants to push, I'll push him as far as he wants to go... I had plenty of time to adapt and prepare for Rich. It's not a factor. This guy is a quality opponent and a tough guy, [but] I am planning to knock him out."

Just as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson did for UFC 114, Chuck Liddell will be coming into his main event bout against Rich Franklin at UFC 115 following a 14-month layoff. Not exactly ideal for the 40-year old former UFC light heavyweight kingpin. "The Iceman" however, says he isn't worried about the affects of ring rust. Even though "Rampage" admitted his time off from the fight game played a role in losing to Rashad Evans last weekend, Chuck points to the fact that he started his training camp for this fight in much better shape that Jackson did for his. Can't really argue with that point. So, what do we think? Will Liddell's long layoff prove to be the difference maker in this match up? And is Chuck's prediction of a knockout in his favor in line with what you're thinking? Let's hear some thoughts.

Rumble at the Rock 3: Pablo Popovitch makes MMA debut tonight (June 4) against Jeff Savoy

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 07:26 AM PDT

Pablo_medium

Decorated submission specialist Pablo Popovitch will make his long-awaited mixed martial arts debut tonight (June 4) when he takes on Jeff Savoy (0-1) at Action Fight League (AFL) "Rock-N-Rumble 3" from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Popovitch tore through the 2009 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC), winning the 76kg division by defeating three-time world champion Marcelo Garcia in the finals.

The Brazilian also holds grappling wins over Jake Shields, Renzo Gracie and Kenny Florian. Popovitch was inducted into the Grappling Hall of Fame by the North American Grappling Association earlier this year.

How well will he transition into mixed martial arts? That may depend on how much of a learning curve there is with his striking and ability to adapt to the nuances of cagefighting.

American Top Team's Savoy will certainly look to give him a failing grade later on this evening.

The Karate instructor was actually booked for the Hard Rock back in April under the Bellator banner; however, the Port St. Lucie native struggled to make weight and was a last-minute scratch from the promotion's season two premiere.

Now he gets a chance to return and make a huge impact if he manages to get by the grappling legend.

Here is the current AFL: "Rock-N-Rumble 3" fight card:

Pablo Popovitch vs. Jeff Savoy
Charles Bennett vs. Luis Palomino
Crafton Wallace vs. Patrick Mikesz
Yuri Villefort vs. TBA
Aliton Barbosa vs. Mitch McElroy
Jessica Agullar vs. Sara Schneider
Efrain Ruiz vs. Valdir Araujo
Caleb Archer vs. James Wynn
Tony Crothers vs. Chris Pecheo

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more AFL updates as they become available.

Fedor Emelianenko legislative bid possible for council seat in 'United Russia'

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 04:46 AM PDT

Fedor_emelianenko_medium

Just when you thought the mixed martial arts career of top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko couldn't possibly get any more complicated.

MiddleEasy.com helps decipher a press release from their initial scoop announcing the approved list of candidates for internal party elections for the regional political council of the party "United Russia."

And "The Last Emperor" finds his name among the list of 58 candidates in the upcoming October elections in the Belgorod Regional Duma:

Among the most notable candidates, in addition to the deputies (Anatolia Zelikow, Victor Filatov, Vadim Cage, Valeria Skruga, Ivan Kulabuhova, Vladimir Kulikovsky) - a famous athlete Fedor Emelianenko, the new director of Belarusian State Technological University Sergey Glagolev (by the way, non-partisan), director of the Institute of Public and municipal government BSU Alexander Mamatov.

But how will that affect his mixed martial arts career and current co-promotion agreement with the San Jose-based Strikeforce promotion?

Well, MiddleEasy is giving some credence to a rumor that Emelianenko could hang up the gloves after his final two Strikeforce fights. As of now, he's booked to face Fabricio Werdum on June 16 and is widely expected to challenge Alistair Overeem for the heavyweight title later this year.

It may (or may not) be the last time fans get to see the Russian compete.

Of course much of this talk is still speculation, as neither Emelianenko or his M-1 team have made an official statement regarding his political or fighting future.

If and when they do, you can be sure to find it right here on MMAmania.com.
