WEC 49 results recap from last night for 'Varner vs Shalorus'

WEC 49: "Varner vs. Shalorus" has come to a close from the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and despite not having a ton of star power on the card, the first-ever showing in Canada was another trademark action-packed event for the promotion.

Lightweight stars Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus threw down in the main event of the evening to try and determine who was the more relevant fighter among the top 155-pound contenders.

Results were inconclusive.

Before the fight, Varner referred to Shalorus as "The best fighter you've never heard of," mainly due to his impressive wrestling credentials from the time he spent competing on the Olympic stage earlier in his career.

However, the "Prince of Persia" elected to trade strikes with the former champion and he held his own for the full three rounds by detonating "C-4" with an abundance of leg kicks and power punches.

In fact, the Iranian apparently did enough to win the fight on the judge's scorecards. The only thing that prevented him from going home a winner was the unintentional kick to Varner's groin that cost him a point in the second stanza.

Shalorus was called for the foul on three separate occasions during the second and third rounds. While they were all unintentional, referee Josh Rosenthal felt the point had to be taken. If it wasn't, he would have likely won a split decision.

Instead, the fight ended in a draw after one judge scored it 29-27 for Varner, another saw it 29-27 for Shalorus, and the third called it 28-28.

"Varner vs. Shalorus 2" -- coming soon to a WEC near you.

Besides that unfulfilling outcome, there were several other great fights on this card, starting with the co-main event between Canadian featherweights Mark  Hominick and Yves Jabouin. The two countrymen delighted the crowd with a fantastic back-and-forth battle across two rounds.

Jabouin's striking looked great early on. He pounded away at Hominick for most of the first round and even at the beginning of the second with an insane amount of kicks and punches. But "The Machine" lived up to his nickname by literally walking through every strike "Tiger" Jabouin offered.

He continued to walk forward and throw his power strikes, even if Jabouin was easily landing ten strikes to every one of his. The strategy didn't seem to be working until he crumbled Jabouin with a body punch midway through the second.

It appeared Hominick was going to get the finish right then and there, but Jabouin battled back to his feet and finally unloaded with some power of his own that sent Hominick reeling.

Again it appeared that the fight was near its end, but again there was a shift in momentum.

Jabouin pounced to finish off his downed opponent, but Hominick recovered quickly and swept his way into a full mount. Jabouin tried desperately to free himself, but he couldn't escape Hominick's grasp and this time the fight really was over.

The win marked two in a row for Hominick, who appears to now be a player in the crowded WEC featherweight division.

Speaking of players in the crowded WEC featherweight division, one of the top 145-pound prospects in the world, twenty-one year old Josh Grispi, made his return to the cage after spending over a year on the sidelines due to an injured ankle.

"The Fluke" has already made a name for himself at such a young age by finishing 12 of 14 career opponents inside the first round, including all three of his WEC foes (Hominick, Jens Pulver and Micah Miller.) That trend continued tonight, as the youngster dominated well-rounded veteran L.C. Davis and notched victory number 13 inside the opening frame.

The nearly six-foot-tall athletic monster frustrated Davis with an assortment of kicks on all three levels throughout the first couple of minutes of the fight. Davis tried to counter by shooting in for a takedown, but by doing so he landed right into a deep guillotine choke.

Grispi's strength was too much for Davis, who drifted into la-la land instead of tapping out.

Afterward, Grispi talked about being ready to fight anybody in the WEC, specifically 145-pound champion Jose "Junior" Aldo.

Aldo vs. Grispi? Yes, please.

Former IFL slugger Chris Horodecki got his first win under the WEC banner by dominating newcomer Danny Downes en route to a third round submission finish via rear naked choke.

To be fair, Danny "Boy" stepped in on super short notice to take this fight in place of an injured Ed Ratclif, and "The Polish Hammer" was a huge step up in competition for the promotion rookie.

Still, Downes showed a ton of grit and heart during the fight. It was clear his cardio was up to par and he continued to battle until the end and in the process, likely earned himself another fight in the WEC, perhaps one with a full training camp.

Regardless, Horodecki handled his business and came away with the first win of his WEC career.

Former featherweight champion Eddie Wineland opened up the Versus telecast with solid performance against young, up-and-coming striker Will Campuzano.

Wineland's head movement and boxing won him the fight. He beat Campuzano to the punch on just about every exchange and he finished off the lanky striker near the end of the second round with a vicious body shot.

The ex-champ appears to be in top form and ready for another title run.

That's a wrap from Edmonton.

Coming up next: WEC 50 is set for August 18 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Newly crowned bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will defend his title for the first time against number one contender Joseph Benavidez in the featured fight of the night.

In the co-main event, former featherweight king Urijah "The California Kid" Faber will make his highly anticipated debut in the bantamweight division against Takaya Mizugaki.

Eddie Wineland: The road back to the 135-pound title begins with the 'dangerous' Will Campuzano at WEC 49

"I feel that I'm right where I need to be and right where I want to be. Big picture, big goal is that belt. And as long as I keep winning, they can't deny me that. Everybody's got the same goal in mind -- everybody's looking at that hardware. I think my experience will play a factor, but it's not his first rodeo. He's been in the gym. He's got a good understanding of what's going on. I'm really not overlooking the fact that he doesn't have 20-plus fights. He's got the experience, he's got the skills and that stuff's dangerous."

Former WEC bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland looks to reclaim the title he held ever-so-briefly from 2006-07. After knocking out Antonio Banuelos at WEC 20 to win the gold, he promptly coughed up the strap in his first title defense to Chase Beebe nearly 11 months later at WEC 26. The Duneland Vale Tudo product is 4-1 since his loss to "The Rage," and hopes to get back into contention by making a statement against Will Campuzano in Edmonton. Anyone think he's got the chops to do it?

UFC 117: Steven Seagal training Anderson Silva for Chael Sonnen fight on Aug. 7 (Video)

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva is getting a little help with his upcoming title defense against Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. "The Spider" has enlisted the services of former Hollywood action star Steven Seagal to help him train for his upcoming fight on Aug. 7. Sonnen is certainly "marked for death" and "under siege" now that the Brazilian has received training from the "half-past dead" Aikido master.

Chris Leben: 'Fighters are like strippers, nobody in their right mind wants to do this'

Quoteworthy:

"Fighters are like strippers; they ain't paying their way through college. If you don't understand what that means, you have to realize that there is always something underlying with all of us. Nobody in their right mind, no normal, sane person, goes ‘[expletive] college, screw my guidance counselor. I'm going to put all my chips in one basket to become a cage fighter so I can get the crap kicked out of me in front of other people.' Obviously, there is something wrong going on there... This guy (McGee) right here is the perfect example. It's that obsessive energy that we have that makes us different. It's that obsessive energy that, yeah, makes me cause a lot of problems for myself in my life. But look, look at where he's at now, willing to do whatever it is. Most fighters I know do whatever they do 110 percent. For me, it's all or nothing. It's either full throttle or nothing. Either I'm eating ice cream and candy or I'm dieting 100 percent. I'm yin and yang. If I go out and have a drink, I'm going to go out and get [expletive] trashed. I know that. That's why I'm not going to do that tonight. It's the same thing in the ring and it's that type of personality that makes all of us up here in front of you, it's what got us here. We all have something like that in us."

Fresh off his second round knockout victory against Aaron Simpson at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 Finale, Chris Leben details the mindset of a cage fighter. While his analogy may seem like a bit of a stretch, it is easy to see where he's coming from. Not every fighter grew up wanting to be a mixed martial artist. For some, it was a reprieve from everyday hardships and life struggles, just like TUF 11 champion Court McGee. Of course, for every two Court McGees or Chris Lebens, there is a Rich Franklin, someone who took to the sport of MMA purely for the passion of competition, not out of necessity. Either way you slice it, what Leben had to say here comes from an interesting and unique perspective, one that only the few who step inside that cage truly understand.

Sengoku 13 results: Sandro demolishes Kanehara in 38 seconds at Raiden Championship

Posted: 20 Jun 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Sengoku13_sandro_medium

At the fabled sumo arena, Ryogoku Kokugikan, a new SRC featherweight champion was born, as Marlon Sandro blasted the inaugural and defending champion, Masanori Kanehara, in just 38 seconds.

Sandro -- a product of the famed Nova Uniao team -- wasted no time in closing the distance and unleashing a flurry of punches in the opening frame. Having forced Kanehara to retreat with the onslaught, he uncorked a devastating right uppercut that collapsed the 2009 Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix champion to the mat.

With four first-round knockouts in his last five fights, Sandro has continued to leave a trail of destruction behind him, cementing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the featherweight division.

In the promotion’s welterweight grand prix, UFC veteran Keita Nakamura finished the Bellator season one welterweight runner-up, Omar de la Cruz, in the second round via technical knockout. The former welterweight King of Pancrase, Takuya Wada, also advanced to the second round of the tourney with a close decision victory over Jae Sun Lee.

Elsewhere, Venezuelan wild man, Maximo Blanco, earned a high-profile victory with a second-round stoppage of Rodrigo Damm. Former ADCC winner and Grabaka founder, Sanae Kikuta, faltered in his welterweight debut against the unheralded Swiss national, Yasubey Enomoto.

Sengoku 13 quick results:

  • Ye Won Nam def. Ikkei Nagamura via Submission (rear naked choke), 3:03 Rd. 1
  • Kazuki Tokudome def. Yuma Ishizuka via TKO (punches), 3:22 Rd. 1
  • Ryo Kawamura def. Hidetaka Irie via TKO (punches), 3:00 Rd. 2
  • Doo Ho Choi def. Ikuo Usuda via decision (split)
  • Shigeki Osawa def. Katsuya Toida via DQ, 1:35 Rd. 3
  • Takuya Wada def. Jae Sun Lee via Decision (split)
  • Keita Nakamura def. Omar de la Cruz via TKO (punches), 3:53 Rd. 2
  • Maximo Blanco def. Rodrigo Damm via TKO (punches), 0:45 Rd. 2
  • Yasubey Enomoto def. Sanae Kikuta via TKO (punches), 3:57 Rd. 1
  • Hiroshi Izumi def. Chang Seob Lee via TKO (punches), 4:37 Rd. 1
  • Marlon Sandro def. Masanori Kanehara via KO (punch), 0:38 Rd. 1

Chuck Liddell retirement is still in the evaluation phase

Posted: 20 Jun 2010 09:06 AM PDT

Chuck-liddell-tuf-11_medium

Unfortunately, the "Iceman" still feels he's got something left in the tank ... maybe:

"I’m still working on evaluating. I thought I did great before I was caught. I have to look at it some more and think about it. I think I looked good and I definitely was in great shape. I could have kept that pace up for another four rounds, without a doubt.... It’s hard to beat that [aggressiveness] out of me, because that’s who I am and that’s who I’ve been for a long, long time. People like watching me because of the way I fight, so it’s hard to get me not to fight that way. There’s a lot still to think about. I felt pretty good and I think showed I can compete. I’m not going to rush and I’ll do what I think is best. I’m just not at a point to make that decision yet."

Three straight knockout losses. Dropped five of his last six fights. 40 years old. Head trainer and best friend (who also happens to be his boss, Dana White) both want him to hang up the gloves. Is there really a lot more to think about for the UFC Hall of Famer?

UFC Quick Quote: Chris Leben a 'force' at 185; Looks to beat more big guys like Aaron Simpson

Posted: 20 Jun 2010 08:02 AM PDT

Leben_simpson_tuf11finale_medium

"I'm extremely happy. Aaron was definitely a worthy and tough competitor. He's a world-class wrestler and an undefeated fighter -- he's got some wins over some big guys. This is a big win for me. It definitely moves me up and establishes that I'm a force in the UFC. And I'm not going anywhere! [Simpson] had some heavy hands. He actually hit me and had me buzzing. But I hung in there and we capitalized. I thought the ref would have jumped in earlier, but he managed to survive, and then he stumbled and fell back completely so it was a good stoppage. A couple of more big guys and I think I'm right up there in the mix. Absolutely."

-- Power-punching Chris Leben, fresh of a technical knockout win over the previously undefeated Aaron Simpson last night at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 Finale, feels as though he's once again close to threatening the top tier fighters in the middleweight division. "The Crippler" has strung together two straight wins after suffering back-to-back defeats, as well as a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. The colorful brawler has always had an up-and-down career, often derailing it himself with his actions outside the cage. Can Leben keep it together long enough to make a sustained run in the 185-pound class or will he once again prove to be his own worst enemy?

James here!

Jamie "C-4" Varner vs. Kamal "Prince of Persia" Shalorus (155-pound limit)

Round one: Varner looks bouncy. He lands a hard right hand to open up the action. Shalorus looks a little stiff here. He lands a leg kick. Now another. Kamal showing his jab now. Varner leans in now and unloads a hard combination of punches. Kamal connects on a leg kick on the exchange as well. Kamal lands another cracking leg kick, but Varner counters with another flurry of punches. Jab lands for Shalorus. Hard right hand now from Shalorus. Varner tees off again, but Kamal makes him pay with a nice hook. Varner stumbled back on that one. Body kick from Kamal. Nice right hand lands for Varner. More hard leg kicks from Kamal. Varner now finally answers back with one of his own. Varner now with a straight right that puts Shalorus backwards momentarily. Varner misses a high kick now. He's starting to open up a bit and now connects with another right hand. Leg kick again by Varner. Shalorus fakes a takedown attempt and Varner drills him with a right hand. Kamal looks hurt and Varner charges. Shalorus stands tall and Varner backs off. Hard leg kick from Kamal. Now a huge exchange and both fighters land some serious shots. The round ends shortly after that. Close round. Varner landed some hard shots, but Shalorus did a nice job with the leg kicks. Tough to judge. Varner had him wobbly a couple of times though. 10-9 Varner.

Round two: High kick lands from Varner right out of the gate. Shalorus looks like a robot just walking forward. Shalorus goes back to work on Varner's lead leg. Varner is doing a nice job of countering with punch combinations though. Body kick lands for Kamal. Varner says it was low, and Rosenthal calls for a halt in the action, which seems standard for a Jamie Varner fight. He recovers and we're back underway. Shalorus pushing forward now and Varner trying to circle away. Varner times a nice counter jab off a Shalorus low kick. Shalorus continues to walk forward and now he lands a body kick. Varner counters again with a nice one-two combo. Varner goes down again to a low kick to the groin. This time Rosental takes a point from the Iranian for the error. That point could come back to be crucial. The round ends shortly after that. Close round again.

Round three: Shalorus may have a broken right hand. He was complaining about it between rounds. Varner eats a hard kick from Shalorus. Another one finds a home. Again it's to the groin and Varner crumbles. Rosenthal doesn't take a point this time for some reason. It was probably the worst one of the three though. Back underway now. Varner is cringing. Back to sticking and moving with the jab and two punch combo for Varner. Shalorus with a kick to the outside of Varner's leg now. Surprisingly Shalorus hasn't shot in for a takedown one time in this fight. High kick from Shalorus gets blocked. Now finally Shalorus grabs a leg and gets a takedown. Varner has full guard. Elbows from the bottom from Varner. Punches to the body from Kamal. Punches to the head now from Shalorus on top of Varner. Varner holding on from the bottom and now he lets go and unloads with a few punches. Shalorus is picking up the pace now and he lands a few hard strikes. Varner scrambles and pushes Kamal off to get back to his feet. Varner misses with a high kick. Shalorus misses with a leg kick. Varner circles around and shoots for a takedown at the bell.

-end-

Mark "The Machine" Hominick vs. Yves "Tiger" Jabouin (145-pound limit)

Round one: Gloves touch and we're underway with the co-main event. Jabouin shows his jab and Hominick answers with a right hand. Nice high kick gets blocked by Hominick. More jabs and some nice movement from Jabouin. Nice kick gets blocked again. Jabouin is punching and kicking in bunches now and he's really looking to land that high kick. Hominick is stalking, but he's eating a lot of little shots from a very active Jabouin. Hominick still walking him down and he eats a kick to the gut. Jabouin just misses on another high kick attempt. More jabs and kicks from Jabouin. Hominick is living up to his nickname here though and he just keeps walking forward seemingly unfazed by anything Jabouin has to offer. Jab and spinning backfist lands now from Jabouin. Hominick eats it and steps forward. Hard left hand lands for Hominick now, but Jabouin keeps scoring points with his jabs and straights. Both fighters exchange leg kicks now as Hominick backs Jabouin into the fence. Difficult round to score because Hominick kept coming foward and pushing the pace. But Jabouin landed more and probably won the round.

Round two: More jabs right off the bat from Jabouin. Into the clinch momentarily, but Jabouin pushes out. Jabouin continuing to fire with punches and kicks and then circle out. Spinning elbow lands now from Jabouin. Hominick stands right in there and continues to walk Jabouin down. Nice left hook lands for Hominick, but Jabouin fires back with more kicks. A hard punch to the body crumbles Jabouin and Hominick pounces. Jabouin recovers and gets back to his feet. Hominick is still firing punches with Jabouin's back to the fence. Now a huge flurry from Jabouin sends Hominick flying backwards and he's on the mat. Now he's standing over Hominick raining down punches. Hominick pulls him down and into his guard. Hominick sweeps and gets mount! Holy shit Jabouin is eating big punches. What a crazy fight. Jabouin can't get out of the position and he's getting drilled with strikes. The referee finally steps in and this fight is over. Another great fight.

Final result: Mark Hominick defeats Yves Jabouin via technical knockout (strikes) at 3:21 of round two

-end-

L.C. Davis vs. Josh "The Fluke" Grispi (145-pound limit)

Round one: Grispi is huge. He towers over Davis in the staredown. Grispi comes out throwing a lot of kicks. Davis is countering with a nice one-two combo that he's landed a couple of times already. Grispi continues to land an assortment of kicks here. He's kicking to all three levels and mixing it up nicely. Davis doesn't like it and he shoots now and gets a nice takedown. Grispi has full guard and he has a deep guillotine choke locked in. This is very bad for LC Davis. He's out. That's it. Another outstanding first round victory for Josh Grispi.

-end-

Chris "The Polish Hammer" Horodecki vs. Danny "Boy" Downes (155-pound limit)

Horodecki lands a leg kick and initiates a clinch. Downes with his back against the fence. Horodecki with a single leg takedown attempt now. He's working hard and he's got it. Right to half guard. Downes is trying to stand and Horodecki straps on a guillotine choke. He has full guard now and he's squeezing it, but Downes looks to be okay. He's out and they stand. Horodecki drives him right back into the cage. Dirty boxing from both fighters out of the clinch. Knees from The Polish Hammer. Single leg again now. Downes isn't having it. Horodecki with a body lock now and that does get Downes on his back. Half guard again. Nice ground strikes from Horodecki. He's looking to pass to mount and he gets it. Downes gives up his back with 1:20 left on the clock. Horodecki has his hooks in. Downes is fighting it, and Horodecki lets go of the hold. Downes takes his back now briefly before they stand and Horodecki drives him back into the fence. The referee is screaming at Horodecki to let go of the cage and the round ends there. 10-9 Horodecki.

Round two: Downes eats a counter punch right hand after showing a one-two combo. Horodecki backs him up with a big punch. Downes leans in and eats a hard two punch combo. Again he makes the same mistake. Nice counter striking from Horodecki. Now a spinning back kick to the body lands for Horodecki and Downes looks like he's tired and hurt. Nice left hand lands for Horodecki who has picked up the pace here. Another nice combination of punches land from Horodecki. Downes grabs for dear life and initiates a clinch. Horodecki drives him into the fence and then punches his way out with body blows. Back into the clinch with The Hammer looking for another takedown. He gets it and goes right to side mount. Downes now lands a counter punch and follows it up with a high kick. Another 10-9 round for Horodecki ends there.

Round three: Big exchange right away and Downes comes out firing. Horodecki obliges for a few strikes before settling on a takedown. Right to half guard. Downes gives up his back now and he's trying to crawl to his feet. Horodecki looking for the rear naked choke. It's under the chin and it's deep. That's it. Danny Boy taps angrily on the mat and Horodecki has a submission win.

Final result: Chris Horodecki defeats Danny Downes via submission (rear naked choke) at 1:09 of round three

-end-

Will Campuzano vs. Eddie Wineland (135-pound limit)

Round one: No gloves touching here. Campuzano leads with a double jab. Wineland with an inside leg kick. Campuzano returns with one of his own. Wineland flashing his jab, but not landing it much. Hard leg kick from Campuzano wakes the crowd up. Wineland lands another inside leg kick. Wineland with some nice head movement and footwork as he avoids a combination. Campuzano trips up and gets hit with a right hand. He swings wildy, but misses with a left hook. Jab to the body lands for Wineland. Nice leg kicks land from Wineland. Campuzano now with a nice kick to Winelands hamstring. Big right hand lands for Wineland now and Campuzano is backpedaling. He lands a jab and circles out. Wineland charges with another combination followed up by a high kick that gets blocked. Good defense from Campuzano there, but Wineland is winning this round by pushing the pace. The round comes to an end without much more action. 10-9 Wineland.

Round two: Jab lands from Wineland. Now a double jab lands. Looping right hand misses from Campuzano. Now he lands a straight right, but Wineland's movement is much better so far in this fight. Campuzano is going to have to start mixing in more strikes. Nice jab now from Campuzano, but Wineland circles away and flashes his double again. Wineland is settling in now and he's out-boxing Campuzano again. Nice exchange with both guys landing. Campuzano gets a body kick blocked, but Wineland can't connect on the counter punch. More stick and move combinations from Wineland and Campuzano is having a hard time finding his range still. Wineland connects with a big right hand now. Campuzano is on queer street. Wineland pounces and he's raining down punches! Somehow Campuzano recovers and gets back to his feet! Wow! He's throwing punches and knees now, standing toe to toe with Wineland. Wineland has him backed up against the fence now and he's continuing the onslaught. He connects with a brutal body shot and Campuzano is down for good now. This fight is over!  Great start to the Versus telecast.

Final result: Eddie Wineland defeats Will Campuzano via technical knockout (strikes) at 4:44 of round two
