TUF 11: Jamie Yager vs Rich Attonito set for live finale on June 19

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 08:51 AM PDT

Yager-attonito_medium

Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 lighting rod Jamie Yager isn't going away just yet.

The funky-haired fight monger is getting another chance at UFC fame as he tries to sneak in the back door against fellow TUF guy Rich Attonito during the live finale on Saturday, June 19 at 9 p.m. ET on Spike TV from "The Pearl" at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.

Yager made some noise early in the season, kicking the "Hebrew Hammer" out of the competition (literally) to earn his spot in the TUF house. He followed that up with another impressive stoppage against Charles Blanchard in episode four, stopping the KOTC vet in just over a minute.

Unfortunately he was unable to capitalize on that momentum and failed to answer the bell in the third round of his episode ten fight against eventual semifinalist Josh Bryant.

The loss did little to stop his off-camera shenanigans, and now Team Liddell standout Rich Attonito is looking to make him pay for it.

Like Yager, Attonito was successful right out of the gate, outpointing Lyle Steffens to secure his spot on the roster. He would face Kyacey Uscola in the elimination rounds and win via disqualification (illegal knee), but was forced to withdraw from the competition after breaking his hand.

Now he's healed and ready to give it a second go round against one of this season's more recognizable names.

Also on tap for the TUF 11 Finale is a light heavyweight war featuring Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine as he inches his way back into the title hunt against Matt "The Hammer" Hamill.

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the main card action on fight night (Saturday, June 19), which is slated to air at 9 p.m. ET on Spike TV from the Palms Casino Resort. The latest quick updates of the live action will begin to flow earlier than that around 7 p.m. ET with the prelim bouts.

It’s going to be a fun night of fights so don’t miss it. And remember to check us out for all the pre, during and post-fight TUF 11 Finale coverage you can handle.

UFC 115: Evan Dunham is hoping you'll take notice if he beats Tyson Griffin

Quoteworthy:

"Tyson, in my opinion, is a top-tier fighter in the UFC, one of the guys who could definitely have a title shot here real soon. I didn't really think too much into [fighting a training partner] besides I was going to have to find some different places to train at for the camp, because he didn't want to share the same gym for the fight. Overall I thought it was great because Tyson's very talented and he's a high-level fighter. At the same time, I think we'll both going to have a couple of tricks up our sleeve but overall we both know each other's strengths. All I can do is keep winning and hope people take notice. Flying under the radar is definitely not by choice."

Undefeated lightweight Evan Dunham (10-0) looks for his fourth straight win inside the Octagon when he takes on training partner and fellow 155-pound standout Tyson Griffin this Saturday night (June 12) at UFC 115 in Vancouver. The submissions specialist cemented his place among the top lightweight prospects with a bona fide ass kicking of Efrain Escudero at UFC Fight Night 20 earlier this year. He made a statement against "Hencho en Mexico" with a grisly armbar that has now gotten him a major step up in competition. Despite his achievements, Dunham is still "flying under the radar." Will that change with a big win over Griffin?

No Mazz: Josh Rosenthal to call 'Lesnar vs Carwin' after Lesnar camp protest

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 06:30 AM PDT

No-mazz_medium

Brock Lesnar's agent, David Olsen, along with UFC attorney Michael Mersch recently made a stink with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), requesting that referee Steve Mazzagatti be removed from consideration as the man in charge of the action during the heavyweight title fight at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 3, as reported by Sherdog.com.

Mazzagatti officiated Lesnar’s Octagon debut against Frank Mir at UFC 81: "Breaking Point" in February 2008, and this marks the third time Camp Lesnar has objected to Mazaggatti's participation (UFC 91, UFC 100).

In the opening seconds of his UFC debut, Lesnar stormed the former champion and began to maul him with a flurry of strikes. It appeared that Lesnar was on his way to an impressive technical knockout victory; however, the former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star landed several questionable -- and according to Mazzagatti -- illegal blows to the back of the head.

As a result, the action was stopped and Lesnar was docked one point. And when the action restarted, Mir survived another blitzkrieg and locked in a fight-ending submission (kneebar) just 91 seconds into the match.

Of course, several fans blamed Mazzagatti and his ruling for the result rather than Lesnar and his inability to defend submissions and/or land legal blows. Regardless, when all was said and done, it was perhaps the most hectic and crazy minute and a half of action inside the Octagon in all of 2008.

And based on this recent request, still a sore spot for Team Lesnar.

In addition to Mazzagatti, Herb Dean, Josh Rosenthal and Mario Yamasaki were all under consideration to officiate the Lesnar-Carwin match.

NSAC Chairwoman Pat Lundvall found no evidence of referee bias -- the crux of Olsen's objection -- and refused to remove Mazzagatti from consideration. In the end it didn't matter, as Josh Rosenthal was appointed as the man in charge, which hopefully means that Lesnar can now focus 100-percent on Carwin come fight night.

Anyone out there in MMA land think it may be time to rid Mazzagatti of his Scarlet Letter? Or do you support the movement to keep him out of this -- and future main events?

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 Finale: Court McGee vs Kris McCray set for June 19

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 09:06 PM PDT

Mcgee-mccray_medium

Six weeks of taping and eleven episodes of reality goodness has brought us to this.

Kris McCray and Court McGee weathered the storm that is The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) to successfully advance to the June 19 finale on Spike TV for a chance to be crowned the Ultimate Fighter.

Both gentlemen made the most of their second chance after suffering early defeats to put together consecutive wins in the ultimate tournament and gain the right to fight for a six-figure contract with the UFC.

And if any TUF competitor ever earned their keep in the house, it was "Savage."

The Woodbridge, Virginia native fought a record five times in six weeks, going 4-1, and ultimately proving to be one of the grittiest guys in the show's history.

McCray entered the TUF house with a perfect 5-0 mark, never haven been pushed past the first round. It took a lot more than that to make it to the finale, and it will likely take more than that to get by Court McGee.

"The Crusher" came into the show with quite an impressive resume himself, carrying a record of 8-1 with his only loss coming to Jeremy Horn. Yes, that Jeremy Horn.

One of McGee's victims along the way was none other than The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 finalist DaMarques Johnson.

Court being considered the underdog throughout the competition, was, well, obviously a mistake.

McGee's well-rounded game coupled with his sponge-like absorption of Team Liddell's coaching did the Utah bred fighter well. And with a considerable amount of time to take his game to yet another level from the end of taping to the show's finale on June 19, his days as an underdog my very well be over.

So, who do you think takes the crown, McCray or McGee?

Also on tap for the TUF 11 Finale is a showdown between the top two finalists from the Spike TV reality show, as well as a light heavyweight war featuring Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine as he inches his way back into the title hunt against Matt "The Hammer" Hamill.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11: Episode 11 recap and discussion

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 05:43 PM PDT

Tuf11-e11_medium

Episode 11 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 11, featuring coaches Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and late replacement Rich "Ace" Franklin, gets underway with Coach Franklin taking over for the last week of training and along for the ride are Forrest Griffin, Gray Maynard and Tyson Griffin.

"Ace" goes right after Kris McCray to help get him ready for his semifinal fight against Josh Bryant while Forrest starts rolling with some of the remaining guys who aren't banged up. McCray seems to have transitioned well to the new coaches.

Over on Team Liddell's side of things, Chuck is trying to adapt to his new opponent going from one of the most hated guys in the sport to one of the nicest. Tavares and McGee have to throw down and it makes the team uncomfortable.

Assistant Coach Hackleman wants to keep the group together instead of breaking them up but isn't sure how the strategy will work out. Chuck feels like he wants to coach both of them at the same time but realizes it's not practical for either contestant.

Back at the house, the guys plan an attack on the Minority Report as revenge for their late-night shenanigans. Airhorns and silly string start flying. Those crazy kids!

Brad Tavares thought they crossed the line so he sent the house chess set to its doom to pay them back. Nice work, Brad. Fortunately the tomfoolery doesn't stop him from making weight as he and McGee both hit their respective marks.

Court admits that he's afraid of dying from shooting heroin. Tavares says he's relaxed and ready to go. I'm taking the heroin guy after that kind of pre-fight trash talk.

Semifinal fight #1: Brad Tavares (4-0) vs. Court McGee (9-1)

Round 1: McGee low kick. Tavares jab. Quick exchange and out. Tavares low kick. Lot of feeling out. McGee bumrush and they go to the cage. McGee works hard for the takedown and gets it. McGee postures and Tavares escapes. They slug it out in the center of the cage but no one gets hurt. McGee rushes and back to the cage they go. McGee works the body and Tavares breaks free. High kick for McGee. He shoots but gets pushed off so he tries again and they go back to the cage. McGee with a huge takedown Hulk-smash style. Tavares doesn't let him stay there and pops right back up at the bell. Close round but probably goes to McGee on takedowns.

Round 2: Tavares stiff jab. Another. A minute goes by as both guys stick and move. Tavares low kick and he eats a hard right. McGee eats a jab and shoots and they go to the cage but Tavares isn't having it. Tavares starts to let the hands go and gets the better of the exchanges. McGee shoots and gets denied and starts to get picked apart on his feet. McGee catches a kick and tries for the takedown but Tavares defends. Round over and I say goes to Tavares.

Round 3: They come out urgently and McGee takes one in the yam-bag. Quick break and it's back on. They exchange in the center of the cage and McGee flaunts his iron chin. Two low kicks by McGee but he eats a hard right in the process. Hard low kick by Tavares. McGee backs him up with a combo. Tavares keeping him at bay with strikes so McGee tries for the takedown and doesn't get it. Without them he's losing the fight. Tavares gets rattled but still defends the many shots from McGee. Now Tavares takes a nut job. They resume and throw hands. McGee stuns him but Tavares answers with a combo. Tavares gets another kick to the balls. It's back on and McGee lands a huge left and rocks Tavares. McGee picks him up and slams him down. In the scramble he locks up the rear naked choke for the submission win.

Court McGee defeats Brad Tavares via submission (rear naked choke)

Dana White called it a dogfight and that pretty much sums it up. It took the entire season but we finally had a great fight. And it came from Court McGee. Take that, naysayers.

The next day Dana rallies the troops and brings representatives of the United States Marine Corps to give them some military training including circuit training and disarmament. They also whap each other with those padded sticks American Gladiators style.

The fighters return the favor by showing them some jits and cage fighting techniques. They also bring them back to the house for a good old fashioned barbecue. Nick Ring gets called out for being a Canadian to group laughs.

Coach Franklin gets some one-on-one time with Kris McCray and tries to help him correct the mistakes he made in his first fight with Josh Bryant. Rich wants him to be a more efficient fighter and has no doubt that McCray will win.

Back at the house, Jamie Yager starts to map out his revenge for the early morning wake up call. In the midst of the fun and games, James Hammertree gets hit with a bag of flour as he's sunbathing. He storms into Yager's room and dumps trash all over the place.

Yager gets mad and then unloads a bag of unidentified perishable goods in Hammertree's room.

He also manages to piss of Kyacey Uscola and they have to be separated. McKinney gets in on the action as well and tells Yager to shut up because he's a quitter. Uscola and Yager agree to go outside to duke it out and (surprise) Yager never shows up.

He's later overheard shouting "It's gone too far dawg" and then goes off to brush his teeth.

Anyway, Bryant and McCray weigh in without incident. Dana finds it very hard to pick against Bryant because he already beat McCray in addition to his performance in the other elimination fights.

Semifinal elimination fight #2: Josh Bryant (10-0) vs. Kris McCray (5-0)

Round 1: A bizarre dance/scramble opens the fight . After exchanging shots and a few hot-steps, McCray presses Bryant to the fence. He secures a takedown. Bryant gets to his feet and breaks away. They exchange leather but nothing significant lands. They clinch a few times and break apart. Ugly striking on display and Bryant eats an uppercut. They clinch and go to the cage. Bryant tags him on the break and they both start firing off punches. It's an ugly slugfest until the bell.

Round 2: McCray eats a right and shoots, pushing Bryant to the cage who quickly breaks free. McCray lands ten body uppercuts and Bryant tags him in the face. Bryant looking for the takedown and isn't getting it. Both guys look extremely gassed and just lay on each other. Mazzagatti separates them. They whale on each other for awhile and Bryant shoots and gets nothing but a rest against the cage. They separate and they're winded. Striking is hideous. Another failed shot by Bryant but at least he gets a break. Bryant working the body and McCray responds with some knees. McCray gets a shot stuffed and they go back to the fence.

Round 3: They stand and trade and both fighters landing at will. No defense here. McCray wants the takedown but doesn't get it. McCray ties him up and they fall down. They get back up. McCray eats an uppercut and returns with a combo. They can barely keep their arms up. They tangle up against the cage and strike in slow motion. What a difference from the first fight. Franklin yells "He's tired Kris!" Really? McCray tries for takedown and can't get it but rests on Bryant until he escapes. He tries again to similar results. Fight over. Nothing to be proud of.

Kris McCray defeats Josh Bryant via unanimous decision

So the TUF 11 live finale is Court McGee vs. Kris McCray. Josh Bryant promises to come back "vicious." What's interesting is that McGee and McCray were both eliminated contestants who came back to make it to the finale.

Credit to McCray for fighting five times this season -- a TUF record. Well, that's a wrap for TUF 11. Who ya' got for the live finale? McCray or McGee?

Georges St. Pierre steroids accusation: BJ Penn says he never called Josh Koscheck

Courtesy of MMA Fighting:

"Media stories on comments I made about rumors of GSP are in no way factual. I'm known for polarizing comments, and I got caught up in hyping TUF and our fight. I was wrong, and apologize to GSP for trying to invalidate his hard work and talent."

Any "Rush" fans out there ready to accept his apology? Or did Koscheck sink even lower in the court of public opinion?

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker: 'A title shot awaits the winner of Sobral vs Lawler on June 16'

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 11:58 AM PDT

Lawler-sobral_medium

The stakes have officially been raised.

During today's Strikeforce: "Los Angeles" media call, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced that the winner of June 16th's 195-pound catch weight fight between Renato "Babalu" Sobral and "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler will receive a title shot.

More specifically, with a win, "Babalu" will get a shot at King Mo's light heavyweight belt while Lawler would get a chance to take on Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza for middleweight gold. Coker made the announcement with hardly a mention of Jake Shields' status with the promotion, seemingly admitting that his time has come to an end with Strikeforce, as is widely believed to be the case.

Renato's title shot, should he defeat Robbie, isn't such a sure thing. Sobral and Lawal are currently training partners as well as friends, of course meaning that "Babalu" holds no interest in taking on the newly crowned champion. "Babalu's" manager was also on the call, and while he wouldn't completely rule a fight with King Mo out, he did say, "It's not a fight we're interested in pursuing, but if it's what the fans want to see, we'll try to work it out."

"Babalu's" manager went on to add, "I'll tell you the fights we want right now, Dan Henderson and Gegard Mousasi." Of course, Mousasi and Henderson are both coming off defeats to King Mo and Jake Shields respectively, so a loss against Lawler wouldn't appear to damper Sobral's chances or getting either one of those bouts, even though Mousasi already holds a convincing win over Renato.

Lawler was last seen making a "Marvelous" comeback against Melvin Manhoef at Strikeforce: "Miami" earlier this year. Despite eating a dozen leg kicks that left him with a serious limp, the hard-hitting Lawler found the Dutchman's sweet spot and put him to bed in the latter part of round one.

He may need that power (along with the ability to stay on his feet) to get past the crafty Brazilian.

Sobral actually held the promotion's light heavyweight title until he got turned inside out by Gegard Mousasi at Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" last August. That defeat snapped a five-fight win streak for the former UFC standout and it will be interesting to see his performance at 195-pounds.

Dana White on Chuck Liddell: 'A loss at UFC 115 would be the end'

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 11:01 AM PDT

Liddell_white_medium

Props: Fighters Only

Quoteworthy:

"Yes [a loss at UFC 115 would be the end of Chuck Liddell's career], and I think he will say the same thing. But let me tell you what the difference is - the difference before, when I wanted him retired,  was that he wasn't doing the right thing. He was out partying every night and doing the wrong thing not the right thing.  He wasn't living the life of a professional athlete... He and I sat down and talked and I will tell you what, he has kept his word. He has been phenomenal shape since the beginning of The Ultimate Fighter and it will be interesting to see how he does. Because Rick Franklin is tough, he is no joke. He had that war with Dan Henderson that many people believe he won, he had the war with Wanderlei Silva - he has fought all the best in the world."

Sound familiar? Well, that's because it is. But, Mr. White wants everyone to know that he isn't bluffing this time around. If Liddell loses this weekend at UFC 115 against Rich Franklin, that's a wrap. Dana points to the difference in "The Iceman's" approach the game for this fight as opposed to others in the past as the reason a defeat here, when Chuck's in the best possible shape he can be, would mark the end of his illustrious career. I think. I'm pretty sure. Maybe not. So, what say you? If Liddell goes down this Saturday night, does he live to fight again? Or, is Dana for real this time? Will he demand the end of one of the greatest MMA careers of all time? What are your thoughts?

WEC 50: Bart Palaszewski vs Zach Micklewright set for August 18

A lightweight match up in the form of Bart Palaszewski vs. Zach Micklewright is in the works for WEC 50, which is tentatively scheduled for August 18, from the The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

KO Dynasty CEO Mickey Dubberly confirmed to MMAmania.com that Micklewright signed his bout agreement last night, and that Palaszewski is expected to do the same in the very near future.

"Bartimus," a veteran of 47 professional mixed martial arts contests, has won three straight fights and has gone 3-2 under the WEC umbrella since first signing with the Zuffa owned promotion back in 2008.

Bart's last two wins, against Karen Darabedyan at WEC 47 and Anthony Pettis at WEC 45, have seemingly resurrected the career of the 27-year old Polish fighter.

Micklewright (7-0), a Miletich Fighting Systems product, will be looking to earn his second WEC win in as many tries.

Debuting with the promotion at WEC 45, Zach grinded out a unanimous decision win over Mushin Corbbrey. Prior that victory, the 23-year old Iowa native held the Glory Fighting Championships title at 155.

WEC 50 has not yet been officially announced by Zuffa, but is already shaping up to be a stellar card with Dominick Cruz vs. Joseph Benavidez and Urijah Faber vs. Takeya Mizugaki serving as the headliners.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more news on WEC 50 as it breaks.

UFC 117: Junior dos Santos vs Roy Nelson official for Aug. 7 in Oakland

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 09:19 AM PDT

Dossantos-nelson_medium

The list of UFC heavyweight title contenders is about to get just a little bit shorter.

The world's largest fight promotion today officially announced the top contender match-up in the form of Junior dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson for UFC 117, which is set to go down on August 7 from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

"Cigano" cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns after a string of impressive performances against the likes of former Pride FC star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 103, Gilbert Yvel at UFC 108, and most recently against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC on Versus 1.

The hard-hitting Brazilian is likely right on the cusp of his first opportunity to fight for a world title. A win over Nelson at UFC 117, making it his sixth straight victory inside the Octagon, would almost assuredly put him over the hump.

"Big Country" endeared himself to casual MMA fans (not really) by pounding out Kimbo Slice during The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 reality show.

After airmailing Brendan Schaub back to Denver at last December's TUF Finale, the portly powerhouse put Stefan Struve on queer street at UFC Fight Night 21 back in March.

If Roy can somehow find a way to put a stop to Junior's meteoric rise up the heavyweight ranks, who's to say that he wouldn't be near a title shot of his own?

UFC 117 is set to be headlined by the middleweight title bout between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Also featured will be perennial top welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves along with another 170-pound showdown between Matt Hughes and Ricardo Almeida.

"You know they say 'A God makes no mistakes,' so I just rolled with it and accepted what happened. At first, I was a little upset but you have to accept it and move forward. I'm very motivated, very grateful the UFC took me back and I'm looking forward to putting on a great performance. I will be much more effective. What you think about, you bring about. I'm focusing on the good times ahead and the great times coming up."

Former number one middleweight contender David Loiseau will get yet another shot at redemption inside the Octagon when he takes on Mario Miranda this Saturday (June 12) at UFC 115 from the GM Place in Vancouver. "The Crow" was activated by the UFC to replace Nick Catone against John Salter on May 8 in Montreal; however, the Quebec Athletic Commission took their sweet time in granting the Canadian a license, forcing the UFC to put him on hold and call up another ex-Zuffa employee, Jason MacDonald. Now that Loiseau's affairs are in order and has been cleared to fight, can he finally realize his full potential? Or will it be one and done with a Miranda win? Early predictions?

The upcoming WEC 50 event is already shaping up to be another star-studded show as the promotion is currently assembling a main card fight that includes Urijah Faber (23-4) in his bantamweight debut against the venerable Takeya Mizugaki on Aug. 18 from "The Pearl" at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MMA Weekly brought word of the pending match-up earlier today.

Faber was recently pushed out of the 145-pound weight class by reigning division champion Jose Aldo. Aside from a Jens Pulver submission win, "The California Kid" dropped consecutive fights to his temporary successor Mike Brown, first at WEC 36 and then again at WEC 41.

His frame may be better served at 135-pounds, but don't expect any liberties from Mizugaki.

The rugged Japanese brawler made a name for himself in his promotion debut, giving then-champion Miguel Torres all he could handle for five rounds in the main event of WEC 40 back in April 2009.

Since that loss, Mizugaki has gone 2-1 for the promotion, defeating Jeff Curran (WEC 42) and Rani Yahya (WEC 48) but losing on points to Scott Jorgensen at WEC 45. A convincing win over a "name" like Faber could possibly get him right back into contention.

WEC 50 is expected to be headlined by current 135-pound champion Dominick Cruz taking on fellow bantamweight all-star Joseph Benavidez.

Martin Kampmann: It's risk vs reward against Paulo Thiago at UFC 115

Quoteworthy:

"I definitely think (Paulo) Thiago is higher ranked and more dangerous than Ben Saunders. The risk is up, but so is the reward. The guys you want to fight are the guys with all the hype behind them. I want to win fights and I want to come in and beat guys up. I want to keep getting tough guys, and I think Paulo Thiago is the first step. I want to beat him, of course, and I want to take that next step up. I don't like looking ahead, but guys like Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves are fighting. Dan Hardy is coming off a loss. There are a lot of different guys up there high in the welterweight division that could be good to fight, but first I have to focus on Thiago."

Martin Kampmann is all patched up and ready to take on Paulo Thiago this Saturday night (June 12) after watching his title aspirations evaporate at the hands of Paul "Semtex" Daley back at UFC 103 in September 2009. "The Hitman" emptied his clip into Jacob Volkmann at UFC 108 to right the ship on Jan. 2 but was forced to withdraw from his UFC 111 scrap against Ben Saunders after suffering a grisly eye laceration in training camp. No question he faces a very stiff test at UFC 115 as he tries to inch his way back into contention by arresting the rise of the Brazilian supercop in Vancouver. Does Kampmann have the chops to pull it off?

WEC 50: Dominick Cruz vs Joseph Benavidez booked for Aug. 18 in Las Vegas

WEC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz (15-1) will make his first title defense against Joseph Benavidez (12-1) in the main event of WEC 50, currently scheduled for Aug. 15 at "The Pearl" from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cruz confirmed the expected booking via his official Twitter account earlier today.

The newly-minted 135-pound kingpin snatched the gold from the clutches of one-and-done champion Brian Bowles at WEC 47 back on March 6.

It was his sixth straight win since a submission loss to former featherweight champion Urijah Faber way back at WEC 26 in March 2007. His path to the title included a unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Benavidez in August of last year.

Now Benavidez gets a chance at both the belt and revenge.

Fortunately his 2009 loss to Cruz did little to disrupt his momentum.

Benavidez quickly bounced back with a technical knockout win over Rani Yahya at WEC 45 back in December before a convincing submission win over former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres in March.

Will he be able to learn from his first encounter with Cruz and adjust his gameplan accordingly? Or has the champion further distanced himself from the rest of the pack?

Whatever the case may be, it's certainly going to be an exciting to watch.
