Fedor's first real loss to Fabrico Werdum comes via triangle armbar on June 26 in Strikeforce

The world of mixed martial arts has been forever changed.

Fabricio Werdum has accomplished a feat that 28 fighters before him could not. He handed former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko his first real loss.

And "The Last Emperor" did most of the work.

After an initial flurry that put "Vai Cavalo" butt-first on the mat, an overly aggressive Emelianenko rushed in for the kill -- against one of the sport's most decorated grapplers.

The Russian made a rare error in judgment.

Werdum was not dazed, nor was he tired. He just happened to lose his legs while defensively backpedaling. Simply put, he was just as fresh and coherent as he was the moment he entered the cage.

And Fedor was in his world.

Emelianenko wanted a finish and he got one. But if the single, angry tap from the wrong side of a slick triangle/armbar was any indication, he was just as upset about his predicament as his legions of fans.

Now the Brazilian moves on to face Alistair Overeem for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship while Fedor returns home to lick his wounds and figure out his next move.

He has but one fight remaining on his Strikeforce contract.

While it's too early to play matchmaker, the loss could re-ignite thoughts of retirement -- or it could motivate him to come back stronger than ever.

The future is unclear, as is the state of the divisional and pound-for-pound rankings. Does Fedor's first loss in nine-and-a-half years send him tumbling down the top ten list? Or does he hold strong in the top five?

That's a matter of debate, but no question the man once thought of as invincible has now been exposed as flesh and blood. Fedor Emelianenko has been defeated.

But has his legacy? That's for you to decide. Let's hear what you have to say about this shocking turn of events in the comments section below.

The floor is yours.

Strikeforce results recap from last night (June 26) for 'Fedor vs Werdum'

Posted: 26 Jun 2010 08:56 PM PDT

Strikeforcejun26rec_medium

After 28 fights over the span of nine-and-a-half years, famed Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko has finally been defeated.

That's the big story coming out of the Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event, courtesy of a bookie-busting upset by Fabricio Werdum, who shocked Showtime viewers and a packed HP Pavilion with his submission win over the former PRIDE deity last night (June 26) in San Jose, California.

"Vai Cavalo" was put on his keister just seconds into the main event, but a charging "Emperor" apparently had his submission defense held up in customs.

Werdum earned his shot at Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem by submitting Emelianenko with a slick triangle/armbar combination that dropped the iron curtain on Emelianenko -- as well as the world's divisional and pound-for-pound rankings.

It may be safe to assume the Brazilian, perhaps for the first time since it happened, is glad he was cut by the UFC. And speaking of the world's largest fight promotion, anyone else think Zuffa boss Dana White just popped the cork on a bottle of champagne?

Cung Le, with actor Channing Tatum in his corner (seriously), wanted to prove that his stunning TKO loss to Scott Smith at last December's "Evolution" event was due to luck, not skill.

Mission accomplished.

The San Shou striker was evasive in the opening minutes as "Hands of Steel" went into full bumrush mode, swinging for the fences and hoping that lightning would strike twice.

Clear skies in San Jose.

Le eventually found his rhythm and turned up the heat in the latter part of round one. He secured his revenge in a dominant second stanza, capitalizing on Smith's trademarked Venus de Milo defense for the technical knockout win.

Cung Le has returned, and will likely participate in the upcoming Strikeforce middleweight tournament if current division champion Jake Shields defects to the UFC.

Time will tell.

Strikeforce Women's Champion Cristiane Santos waltzed into her title defense against Jan Finney as a bloated -2000 favorite by the accounts of some sportbooks.

"Cuddles" may now be thinking that was a conservative estimate.

In a performance that was eerily reminiscent of feeding Christians to the lions, Finney was damn near devoured whole by a ruthless "Cyborg," who delivered four knockdowns in the first round alone.

Was Referee Kim Winslow's decision to let it continue a reckless one?

Santos was docked a point for being overly aggressive as she dropped multiple sledgehammers to the back of the noggin during one of her patented blitzkriegs.

Finney, to her credit, was able to hang on and run out the clock in a defensive strategy that I believe is referred to as "not dying."

The second round played out much like the first. Santos laughed off a few jabs and proceeded to go apeshit in the clinch. Finally, mercifully, Finney was spared another full round of abuse.

Apparently between rounds someone must have informed Winslow it wasn't a fight to the death.

Is there a doctor in the house? And more importantly, is there a female fighter in the game today who stands a chance against the Brazilian terminatrix?

Former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson was tasked with getting the "Shark Tank" warmed up for the Showtime telecast by throwing down with the venerable Pat Healy in the opening fight of the night.

"The Punk" did not disappoint.

Thomson went to hell and back with the larger and stronger "Bam Bam," but managed to keep his wits throughout the razor-close bout and secure a rear naked choke with less than a minute left in the final frame.

It didn't come easy -- and Healy definitely earned the respect of the crowd (and his peers) with an aggressive style and gritty performance. He gave Thomson all he could handle and likely claimed at least one of the first two rounds before running out of steam and succumbing to the last-minute submission.

A great show of heart and an impressive finish for the former champ. Where does Thomson go from here? Rumor has it that Lyle Beerbohm is looking to take a major step up in competition...

That's it from us. Now we want to hear what you have to say ... share your thoughts and "Fedor vs. Werdum"-related comments below.

Assuming you're not still in shock.

Frank Shamrock retires from mixed martial arts

Frank Shamrock (23-10-2) announced his retirement from mixed martial arts midway through last night's (June 26) Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" Showtime telecast from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

"The Legend" was last seen getting hammered into a TKO stoppage by current Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz. It was his second straight defeat after coughing up the promotion's 185-pound title to San Shou Striker Cung Le.

Shamrock was the first fighter to hold the UFC Middleweight Championship (later renamed the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship), held the interim King of Pancrase title in addition to the WEC Light Heavyweight Championship, and in his final run, the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship.

Unless he pulls a Randy Couture and decides to come back and take on a new generation, the 37-year-old middleweight is calling it a career. Where does he rank on your all-time list?

Let's hear your thoughts, Maniacs.

Vadim Finkelchtein: UFC threatened TapouT with lifetime ban over Fedor shirts

Posted: 26 Jun 2010 08:05 AM PDT

Quoteworthy:

"I'm afraid to disappoint the fans, but it seems like, never. Literally today they called me from the TAPOUT firm and told me that they were contacted by the representatives of the UFC, and that under the threat of tearing up all the contracts with their organization demanded that TAPOUT categorically stop producing all the shirts from the line of Fedor Emelianenko. This is how Dana White feels about Fedor. So tell me, what can we think about such person after this, that even in things that have nothing to do with UFC, he still tries to mess it up for us. So it seems that the shirts will just stay a rarity that fans will see in pictures. Say thanks to UFC and their politics of monopoly."

Co-owner and President of M-1 Global Vadim Finkelchtein accuses the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) of blocking a potential deal between Fedor Emelianenko and TapouT, the world's most recognizable brand of mixed martial arts apparel and merchandise. TapouT produced a Fedor shirt that will probably never see the light of day under threat of a lifetime ban from the UFC. Is this just business 101? Or a slap in the face to a company that helps provide for many of today's (and yesterday's) top fighters?

Reminder: UFC 113 counter programs Strikeforce 'Fedor vs Werdum' tonight (June 26) on Spike TV

Spike TV is once again hosting a special encore presentation of a recent UFC pay-per-view (PPV) when the cable network goes head-to-head with Showtime tonight (June 26) at 10 p.m. ET.

Featuring a light heavyweight rematch between two of the world's top 205-pound athletes, UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun II" will counter program the upcoming Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event set for the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

In addition to "The Last Emperor," Strikeforce will feature Women's Champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos against Jan "Cuddles" Finney as well as a rematch between former middleweight champion Cung Le and Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith.

Is that enough to outdraw a couple of Brazilians, Kimbo Slice and a Canadian piledriver?

The UFC seems to think so. Here is a list of the featured bouts for Saturday's Spike TV presentation:

205 lbs.: Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio Rua
265 lbs.: Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione
155 lbs.: Sam Stout vs. Jeremy Stephens
185 lbs.: Joe Doerksen vs. Tom Lawlor
170 lbs.: Marcus Davis vs. Jonathan Goulet
185 lbs.: Patrick Cote vs. Alan Belcher

This latest counter-programming effort should come as no surprise.

The UFC and Spike aired a special presentation of  "Ultimate Fights" to run opposite the Strikeforce "Heavy Artillery" event from St. Louis back on May 15.

Of course most fans who want to see both cards will DVR one broadcast and watch the preferred one live -- or simply flip-flop back and forth between the bouts that don't hold their interest.

Which one of those descriptions best fits you? Let's hear it Maniacs, what are your plans for tonight's MMA programming?

Sound off!
